Anyway while I think getting into specific numbers quibbling is a losing battle and am not a fan of hyperbolic statements that lean into violence, there is such a double standard that fandom will make post after post complaining about there not being enough found family stories, slow burns, heroes past their 20s, or old man yaoi, and this will be seen as normal healthy kvetching, but the minute instead people publicly mention wanting more f/f, butch women, polyamory, or something else that isn't part of the default ao3 house style, you will get droves of ppl acting like you are trying to destroy their way of life
#seasalt talks#guys as someone who only likes to really participate in fandoms that arent big#and usually likes it when less ppl write for the stuff I like#'write it yourself' now sends me into hives#like wow I am a writer and I do write the stuff I like#you just want to tell me to shut the fuck up without looking reactionary#but yeah insane to see the don't like don't read crowd-the backbutton exist crowd swarm a post they didn't like#saying 'actually i LOVE popular thing that is impossible to avoid so fuck you!'#literally saw a queer person argue monogamy being default in fiction is fine since most ppl are monogamous#ppl really have no standards beyond 'in-group good and out-group bad'

i can sometimes overlook grammatical errors if i want to read a fic badly enough (ie, there is not enough of what i want and i am getting desperate) but do you know what is just nails on a chalkboard irritating to me:
"I think you'll be all right." the man said. "I hope so." she grinned."
aaaghhhh learn how to punctuate aaaaaaggggghhhhh

Like part of it is that it's Aerith and I feel like most people calling Aerith in particular "wholesome" are kind of ignoring her actual character in favor of a stereotyped view of her archetype
But I will admit I do typically read the term as kind of unintentionally insulting in any case.
#anyway i just had to backbutton out of a fic because they wrote aerith being scandalized by the idea of sex#and i just don't agree with that.

MOONLIGHT FALLS HAS BEEN DE-SPOOKIFIED! INTRODUCING...SILVERLIGHT FALLS!
I'm a fan of realism in the Sims 3 franchise so I never play with supernatural elements, with the exception of aliens once in a while. So imagine my surprise when I opened the origin app many moons ago to find I suddenly and without explanation owned Supernatural. I was excited for the new world but deeply disappointed to find a misty northwestern world not meeting its full potential. I didn't know how to use CAW back then and it only occurred to me recently that I could open up pre-made Sims 3 worlds and tweak them to my liking. This file here is what I would call an experiment. Its not up to par with my normal projects but I thought it was still fun and would bring someone some joy, so I introduce to you - SILVERLIGHT FALLS. Its just like Moonlight Falls, but without all the filth and supernatural creatures and the obnoxious baseball diamond. I also did some rezoning because it felt more like the Maxis team just took everything they had and threw it at the wall instead of making proper subneighborhoods. So its been broken up into a Downtown, Poorer Outskirts, Estates, High End Suburbs, Low End Suburbs and Countryside. I filled the world with some rabbitholes and recycled vanilla game lots from one of my previous worlds that didn't work out. This is by no means a completed town, but its a good backbone for something more.
Please note - If you have any routing issues with staircases (sims not using them), just delete and then hit the backbutton. For some reason, one of my mods messes with the staircases sometimes when I put down a lot from the bin. Deleting and then hitting the back button should resolve the issue.
And one more thing, make sure you use the save file + the world file. My EIG is a butt and crashes when I try to edit this world with CAW, so I had to do the lot edits in game. The world won't look right without the save file.
I'm also recommending Burnt Waffles Blue Skies and Sunshine Mod with Moonlight Falls Water. https://www.mediafire.com/download/bag663dj7v8er3r/BrntWafflesBlueSkies%26SunshineLightingMod1.5MFwater.package.zip
World File https://www.mediafire.com/file/4fdkvn7qtcvqxr4/Silverlight_Falls.Sims3Pack/file
Save File https://www.mediafire.com/folder/hfmicxjpwqazu/Silverlight+Falls.sims3
REQUIRES ALL EPs and may have a few store items in it. Sorry.

Even aside from the insanity of Anon thinking fen are offended by the word "smut", Anon's assumption that self harm is how we react to offensive material is pretty telling.
Anon, most people aren't suicidal, most people don't routinely self harm. You are clearly very upset, but most people are much better adjusted than you. Most of us see a tag that offends us and just go "ug, I can't stand this shit" and backbutton away.
And most of us see the word smut and think absolutely nothing, but some of us do roll our eyes and go "people know they sound like they're making a silly joke, right?".

I am such an irrational hater about pop culture references in books. I can't even say why it bugs me so much but I just backbuttoned out of two different books because one mentioned the podcast Serial and one mentioned acotar
#tbf neither of them seemed#extremely well written#to start with#scrolling through new releases wondering if I've become too much of a hater for fiction

As far as I know, it's no particular dialect, just period British (and some American) slang, with a few words and phrases of Wodehouse's own invention thrown in. I'm a non-native speaker as well and while a lot of things can be understood from context, I think that if the style doesn't grab you and you don't find looking stuff up now and again fun, it might not be an enjoyable read. It's kind of love-it-or-hate-it. I love the way Bertie talks, but part of the fun for me is the linguistic challenge of understanding him. The good news is that certain vocabulary comes up again and again, so you only have to look it up once.
Spill the mate tea!
It's Valentine's day and a letter has arrived from my new friend Wooster. I don't know much about him or P. G. Wodehouse, so everything is new to me. I love the illustration in the letter! Jeeves looks so elegant that I understand the first impression.
Wooster is so friendly that his letter feels like a talk with an old friend, but sometimes I couldn't understand him because English is my second language and I had to keep a tab just for a dictionary.
cheery: cheerful steep: infuse gill: breathing organ of fish. UK Stream zephyr: gentle wind, breeze law-abiding: obedient to the laws of society to sow his wild oats: to have many sexual relationships particularly when one is young boon: gift, blessing fo'c'sle of a whaler: ... ok, this is hard! 🐳
It's about people who are the essence of propriety today, but whose behaviour in the '90s would not have been tolerated in the fo'c'sle of a whaler.
Ok, I have an idea, but let's see:
Es sobre personas que son la esencia del decoro hoy en día, pero cuyo comportamiento en los años 90, no habría sido tolerado ni en un barco ballenero.
Spill the tea! I want all the details!!! If there are so many stories to fill a book with all the gossip, a cuppa won't be enough, I'll need lot of yerba mate.
Edwin was her young brother, who was spending his holidays at Easeby. He was a ferret-faced kid, whom I had disliked since birth.
Somebody of the Lestrade family, I guess...
I'm having fun even when I had to look for so many translations, so for now I'll take this quote as my experience reading this for the first time (as a non-native speaker)
All perfectly true, no doubt; but not the sort of thing to spring on a lad with a morning head.
I'll need more mate tea for the next letter, I guess.

What makes you back button on a fic?
I don't think it's being fair to a character I like (particularly if I think it's smearing them to elevate someone I don't like as much!).
Turns out to be focusing on someone I don't care much about.
Skipped ahead and read the ending and didn't like it.
Excessive spelling, punctuation, or vocabulary mistakes. I'm not no-tolerance, and grammar gets a lot of allowances in fiction writing. But there is a finite tolerance buffer, after which I will backbutton or start nitpicking.
I regret that I cannot explain why sometimes prose strikes me as clunky.
If I'm interested enough I will try to persist past lack of paragraph breaks or nonstandard quotation marks, but they bug me.
It spends too much time on relationship drama. I don't mind shippy stuff as long as there's some additional compelling plot or other emotional stuff going on, but romance alone is pretty meh.
I do have NoTPs.
There are a very few, mostly canonical pairings which are OTP-ish for me.
I'm bored.
I tend not to open a fic in the first place if the summary has big mistakes or the tags/summary seem overly ambitious for the length of the fic.

hii :) 🥤, 🦷 and 🧩?
Hi hello!
🥤⇢ recommend an author or fanfic you love
Right now I'm obsessed with two WIPs in particular. One is A Patchwork Family by @pepperwebsblog, a modern AU kidnap fam fic that has the most fix-it cinnamon roll Maedhros and the other is @starspray's meanwhile the world goes on series.
🦷 ⇢ share some personal wisdom or a life hack you swear on
I don't know if I have any personal wisdom to share, as I'm not very wise. But my mantra for a long time has been "I will not say the day is done / nor bid the stars farewell", and it's kept me hanging on when I needed it.
🧩 ⇢ what will make you click away from a fanfiction immediately?
Not meaning to click on it in the first place. ;) I do have a few pet peeves - elfhood, elfling, she-elf, dwarrow-dam (couldn't you at least have made it "dame!?"), and (unless it's a modern AU or humor) , terms like "okay" or "cool", but unless it's very egregious, I'll keep going. The fic has to be pretty good to keep me engaged if it's all lowercase. In terms of content I tend not to click on the fics/pairings/tropes that don't interest or actively squick me, so it really is rare for me to backbutton.

20 questions for writers
tagged by @lindstromm - thanks! I'm in a bleh mood so a good askmeme is right up my alley at the moment.
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
229, which include any fic I've written going back to 2002. About 30 of those works are vids instead.
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
1,518,992! I just passed the 1.5mil mark with my last fic, and am very pleased with that. Especially because I remember only passing the 1mil mark early on in TOG fandom, so I've written quite a lot of those words just in the past few years. (By my standards, at least, that's a lot!)
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Many. I am very multifannish at heart. I tend to settle into one primary fandom for a few years at a time, but even then, I'm still writing the occasional oneshot for random other fandoms. Most recent primary fandoms were The Old Guard and X-Men, most recent fic posted was for Heartstopper (and I'll likely linger in that fandom for a bit now that I'm here).
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Logical Deduction (HP, Remus/Sirius) - a very silly fic from 2006 that has, to my mild dismay, somehow risen the kudos ranks (6245 kudos?!) by virtue of the sheer enormity of HP fandom. So it goes.
it's like one of us woke up (X-Men, Charles/Erik) - XMFC canon divergence / fix-it fic. I'm still unsure why this is my most popular Cherik fic, but I'm not mad about it.
she's the one that they call old whatsername (Star Trek AOS, Kirk/Spock) - my only non-crossover Trek fic, and always-a-girl!Kirk to boot. I do love this one, still.
The Pond Continuum (Doctor Who, Amy/Rory) - in which Amy and Rory unwittingly encounter various other companions as they live out their post-Doctor life on the slow path. I am fond.
life is very long (Old Guard, Nicky/Joe) - my first TOG fic, posted like a week after the movie hit fandom like a ton of bricks, and reaping the kudos benefits of being in the right place at the right time. It was a good entry point into a new fandom for me, for sure!
I do love that my top 5 are all completely different fandoms; that feels very reflective of me as a writer. (Top 6, actually, since #6 is MCU.)
5. Do you respond to comments?
Yes, always, if only with a quick thanks. Because I really appreciate receiving them, and want the commenters to know.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
The angstiest ENDING? I have to dig deeper into the past for those, because I was more prone to writing them when I was much younger. These days, while I do enjoy a bit of angst along the way, I NEED a happy ending. Probably one of my old Remus/Sirius fics, but I'm not going trawling for a link now.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Most of them, lately. I need to believe in happiness. Fandom is my escapism from an increasingly grimdark reality.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Very rarely, fortunately. Let's keep it that way. The backbutton is right there if you don't like any of my fics, no hard feelings.
9. Do you write smut?
Not really? Sex scenes, yeah, sometimes, but I've only got 4 fics (out of 229) rated as Explicit, and honestly, glancing over them now, they probably only really warrant an M rating. I have no interest in describing bits and bodily fluids in graphic detail, I don't personally find that sexy. But sex is a significant element of human connection for many folks, so yeah, I'll include it where it feels appropriate.
10. Do you write crossovers?
Yes, though I prefer fusions (characters from one verse written into another) to more literal crossovers (character A from fandom A meets character B from fandom B). But I've certainly written a few. They're fun!
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not to my knowledge.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes, several! I'm always excited and honored when that happens.
13. Have you ever cowritten a fic before?
Nope, never. I'd be curious to try that out someday, though honestly, writing is such a private/internal activity for me that I'm not sure I'd be any good at it.
14. What is your all time favorite ship?
I do NOT play favorites in this way. I love all my OTPs in all their unique and individual ways, and I'll always happily revisit them years and years later (as a reader, at least). Here, let's just say that Mulder/Scully was my very first ever OTP, so they will always have a special place in my heart.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I've never abandoned a WIP once I've started posting it (though a couple took YEARS to finish, ugh), so really, now we're just looking at my personal WIP folder in gdocs. There are a few in there I'm sad about leaving unfinished. Um, let's go with an old Doctor Who/Torchwood fic, which I've got like 15k words written for but have long since moved on from. Every few years I'll dig it up and reread what I wrote and quietly mourn the fact that I never finished it, but there's no way I'll ever get back into that particular headspace (and the fandom is a very different place now).
16. What are your writing strengths?
Character voices. I'm a good mimic.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Sex scenes/action scenes. I despise writing these. Smut I avoid, but action scenes are sometimes necessary, and they drive me up a fucking wall.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language during a fic?
If it's just a few words/brief phrases sprinkled in, because that's how the character in question would speak, great. If there's extended dialogue - well, still depends on the character POV to me. If the character DOES speak the other language, I'd write it out in English (since that's the language I write fic in) and indicate through the narration that they're actually speaking Italian, or French, or what have you. If the POV character does NOT speak the language themself but is overhearing it, I don't include the dialogue at all, just narration to describe it. It's all about whose POV we're in and what's actually being understood, to me.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
X-Files. You will not find those fics on my AO3. I was very young then.
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
NO FAVORITES. TOO MANY FICS. My most recent fic is usually my current favorite, anyway, so have one last plug for and we have all the time in the world (to get it right) if you're into Heartstopper, and let's move on. 😉
No-pressure tagging @andrea-lyn, @knoepfchen, @polarcell and anyone who's in the mood to play!

🪐 🥤 🧩
🪐 ⇢ name three good things going on in your life right now
oooh okay 1) earlier this year at the age of 40mumble, i was able to, for the first time, afford a new vehicle that i wanted. my truck's name is Frank and he's a Bronco and he's red and i've already fucked up the housing around the skid plate by doing dumb shit in the desert. it's true love.
2) yes there are many aggravations, but i truly deeply love the organization i work for. we have an important mission, i work with some of the absolute best people i've ever known, and i have a sign on my office door that says COME BACK WITH A WARRANT.
3) i am writing again! i hadn't really for a long time, except for some short bits here and there, but now i am actively engaged in a project that i can see and feel coming to fruition and damn it's good to be back.
🥤 ⇢ recommend an author or fanfic you love
i don't know if indigostohelit is on tumblr but they have a narcos fic that i reread over and over like a religious text. the book of saint javier peña, idk. it's just so perfect. when i commented on the fic after reading it the first time i said thank you for creating this delicious dark dream and that kind of says it all.
🧩 ⇢ what will make you click away from a fanfiction immediately?
i recently unsubscribed from a WIP that i was really digging because i found out the writer was a zionist, but that's probably not what this question is asking.
uhhh it's mostly subjective characterization stuff that kills a fic for me, but there's a thing that i am not sure i can describe where the opening sentence(s) have this. particular syntax and cadence? it's got a very juvenile feel to it. like something taught in elementary school, this is how you write the opening of a story. and make sure you state the pov character's full government name so there's no question who the story is about. this is not a good description, but it's a really deep personal peeve and i will backbutton instantly.

the yeah thing is making blink rn bc my mom does it and so do i (bc i got it from her) but we are very much in the usa. now im wondering where the hell she got it from.
also now i'm wincing bc i'm sure i've put that in fics, oops! i swear i thought it was american english!
but. anyway. torch is a really funny one for what it brings to mind tbh
Aw, it’s really not a big deal! For real, i think everyone I’ve talked to about this, including people from the US, has been like “…I don’t…really care.”
Also, even with my “UNACCEPTABLLLLE!” brain, I don’t think I’ve ever backbuttoned solely because of any British-Englishisms.
(Okay there was one that I quit after idk three BE-isms in like one paragraph and I was like “I can’t take it anymore!”…but tbh I wasn’t really feeling it.)
ANYWAY. All of this is for free anyway, and I appreciate what everyone does. ANYONE CAN DO WHAT THEY WANT!
#ask answered#but also if I could ‘ameripick’ for DC fic specifically I absolutely would.#if you love what you do you never work a day in your life.

I feel the same as the anon who just wrote about putting preachy stuff in notes about writers who do big long performative MINORS DNI GET THE HELL OUT YOU DO NOT HAVE PERMISSION TO READ!!!! disclaimers, just put a simple 18+ or rated R or whatever, as someone who’s been reading fanfic since I was way too young back in the 00s I can guarantee some youngins will read it regardless (probably more likely to the more you protest) and it’s just obnoxious
--
My view is that I was curiously clicking on snuff erotica on Usenet at 13, and nobody's "no, no, yes" shippy fanfic is going to be outside of what your typical teen can find at the library or the bookstore.
I straight up don't care if minors find my kinkier fanfic. Reading shit is the safest way they can explore, not just because of the low level of interaction with others that is required but because it's easy to control how fast and how much you experience a thing.
Just don't leave me "I fapped to this" comments while proudly admitting you're super young.
And for god's sake, learn to backbutton if you're feeling freaked out by something.
If you can manage both of those as a teen, you're fine by me and should read whatever you want.

Can we have the option to see the menu while playing and a backbutton? Or at least the replay button.
Games don't reset when you exit the browser so that doesn't let you replay unless you delete the whole history and/or close and reopen the browser.
Hey! So it was already available where you can save and restart at the end of every chapter. I'll keep that, but I also added the menu now on the bottom of each page. No back button, but in the menu you can restart to the beginning of said chapter if you aren't satisfied with a choice.
I might think of some other things to add in the menu such as character info, but it isn't my priority right now. I'l have to see. Thanks for playing! 😊
