Last DR Post cont'd: JP EDITION
A little more to talk about, as well, that is seperate. BARE IN MIND that the translations aren't done by Toby themselves, HOWEVER Fangamer have direct input on the game. ALSO, I don't speak fluent Japanese at all. So I'm using DeepL in order to translate the pages and content.
Tumblr media
For anybody in denial about Chapter 3's locale...
Tumblr media
And Mike's role as "not the TV..."
Tumblr media
So, that's my closing bracket. Not much else to bring up, but there's a lot of small things.

i’m thinking SO hard about bilingual eddie at the moment,,,,
driving w/ steve and robin and he gets such bad road rage he just slips and starts swearing in french (took it as a class to suck up to the teacher n get the room for hellfire) ((but he learned the curses from his mom’s side)) and steve is SO confused while robin just laughs
and steve Rich Ass Parents Dragged Him To Paris Once harrington just hits him with a very quiet
“…quoi?” (“…what?”)
n eddie without looking away from the road just shouts
“TAIS-TOI PUTAIN DE VACHE ESPAGNOLE”
(“SHUT UP FUCKING SPANISH COW”)
and robin LOSES it

Who was gonna tell me that the Finnish word "yläkoulu" is infact NOT the same as the English "high school" even tho they have the exact same two words but instead is a word for the last 3 years of middle school so instead of me being in high school as I thought I was i was infact still IN MIDDLE SCHOOL
Oh yeah and the word for high school is "yliopisto" or "over education"

OK everyone, totally crazy theory pop in my mind, while reading Wikipedia :
The painter Singer Sargent could have painted (this is a historian's guess) his famous "Portrait of Madame X" after a male model (André Belleroche). Now look at this nose and this hairs, that black dress...
Knowing that Singer Sargent was a neighbor and friend of Wilde, himself a great friend of a certain angelic bookseller, would it be possible that the portrait is, in reality a representation of Crowley intended for Mr. Fell???

I need to talk about Denmark's human name. I never liked the fandom name Mathias Køhler, because I have some personal beef with the name Mathias, and I'd rather have a -sen last name to represent him, since those are way more common in Denmark. But hey, it's a fandom name, so just use some of Himaruya's suggestions then, right?
Well.
Everywhere you look for Denmark's human name in the English-speaking fandom, you'll find something along the lines of this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So first name, use one of those, last name, Densen, case closed, right? Except, no. It's not. As a Dane, Densen (I've seen it spelled Dansen on occasion) is SUPER rare. It doesn't read as a real last name to me, and if I go to the Danish statistic site for names, there's only four people with Densen as a last name, and ZERO with Dansen. So it never sat right with me. That, and this misconception that Andersen, Arnesen, and Christensen could work as a first name just seemed wrong to me – the -sen suffix means "son of", and is never used in first names unless your parents hate you or something. That's why I dug deeper.
I clicked the source.
Now, my Japanese is pretty bad, but there's this nifty little thing called website translation, so I translated it to English, and this was the results:
Tumblr media
And I thought, "huh, that's weird? Where's that horrible Densen?" I can guess that "Anelsen" is a poor translation of Andersen and "Anasen" is either a different spelling of that or Arnesen. "Mikel" should be spelled Mikkel (which Hima does spell it as). But clearly, something was missing. In the whole translated page, there was nothing about Densen. So I sent it back to Japanese and searched for デンマーク to get to the right spot:
Tumblr media
There's no デンセン or anything close to it. It doesn't exist. So I came to the only conclusion I could – it's a mistranslation/add on made by the translator. I don't know if it was done with bad intent or not, but either way, this Densen-thing is wrong! I remember coming across someone speculating it might be a bad translation of Dinesen, the pen name of a Danish female author, but it never even existed in the first place!
So please stop using Densen/Dansen as Denmark's last name with the justification that Himaruya liked it. You can use it as a fandom name (and I'll think you're silly for it), but don't say it has any canon justification, because it doesn't.
It does make me wonder how many other odd translations there is in the English-speaking fandom...

i'm honestly a pretty picky reader nowadays bc i've read so many fantastic books in my life, but my biggest pet peeve is reading something that's been translated from another language and seeing the original language's conventions through the translation
like, i'm reading a french book right now, and i don't even know french and i can still see the language's syntax and grammar under the layer of finnish words
(one of the top finnish translators, kersti juva, says in an interview that in creating a translation, you have to ruminate on the text, to understand what the author is trying to say and then use the instrument of your own language to transmit those ideas)
(and this is what i try to do when i'm moving between languages - just like i can't play a tune the same way on the piano and the guitar, i can't do two languages the same way)
(and the thing with ruminating is that it takes time)
and that's why reading a bad translation makes me feel so strongly - oftentimes these are foreign books that have become hugely popular in the original language, and now are being translated by big publishers at breakneck speed so that the popularity is still there when the translation comes out
and i hate it that artists - translating literature is an art form - are forced to perform badly so that the money making machine that is the publishing industry, can profit even more

Coin-toss Tess is a great example of changing too much in localization.
Her original name is "Look that Way Hoiko". Which is a game where you are trying to NOT look the direction someone points. Which is why she's pointing this way and that. (And example of this game is in the old NES text adventure Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom. After the Jankenpon (Rock-Paper-Scissors) you have to play this game. Janken Pon, also, is the original name of Paper Rock Sylvie)
"Coin-Toss" makes no sense in this case and I'm betting many people are going "Why is she pointing all over the place."
She could have been named "Look-There Lily" or something.

i get the opening of The Divine Comedy stuck in my head a lot - just the opening three lines in English - because there’s a conceptual audio poem I like a lot that just compiles the opening of every English translation in a list, and also because it’s fascinating to me that none of them actually seem to crack the meaning of the third line in English properly. It always feels a bit awkward, like nobody has ~solved the translation puzzle yet. Because the direct path is lost. I get the meaning, but is there a way to say it that sounds more natural? Should that even be the goal anyway?
Anyway the other night I was doing the old game of putting the opening three lines into google translate and translating them from language to language to language and then finally into English to see what I get, my favourite so far:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Obviously you can see that there’s some serious pronoun shift. I think the first has a good last line that sounds a bit more natural. The second just makes me laugh - that’s the kind of semantic change that I wanted.
