In the video by Youngsta CPT, titled Young Van Riebeck (YVR) Cape Town rapper Youngsta channels a very confronting energy within the historical backdrop of Cape Town and Dutch settlers. The video is fueled and inspired by the history behind Cape Town and the Dutch colonizers, namely the head of the colonizing group Jan Van Riebeek. He had framed the time and place by using dress as a means of indicating to the viewer what time and place this video is referencing. Youngsta has also shot the video in what appears to be a residence of some sort, that has old antique and cape-Dutch styles furniture as well as artwork & architecture. There are also scenes where men are seen on a boat rowing into the bay, a potential reference to slave trade and/or colonizers who used boats to enter the land as well as send off slaves on slave ships/boats. These are physical visual sets in scenes that frame the time & place that the video is referencing. Familiar architectural sites that are seen in the video are the beach/shore (looks as if it’s Clifton or Bakoven in the video) and a cape-Dutch styled house that if I’m not mistaken, is now a museum house? This adds meaning to the time and place as slave trade & transport happened by boat at the time and the Dutch had a particular style of decor which is very recognizable as such. The framing of slavery in a contemporary Cape Town could be used as a reminder of the past but also used as a sense to contrast between ‘then’ and ‘now’ and therefore giving contemporary individuals a feeling of liberation, as slavery has since been abolished. Clothing and costume design has been used very considerately and is very resolved. The specific items of clothing used indiecate the time frame being referenced very clearly. There is a strong contrast by using POC in the 1600s Dutch styled dress, as it would never have happened during the slave trade (Again, a potential sense of liberation and control over the oppressor?). The people in the boat are also all wearing chains/hand cuffs around their arms whilst banging on the boat to the same tempo of the track. In my opinion this indicates that they are supposed to be seen as ‘slaves’ being prepared for trading. The banging could indicate the frustration experienced by the individuals being oppressed. Then Youngsta himself is dressed in royal attire, appearing as a King sporting a crown & train in royal blue. It could indicate sovereignty of the oppressed over the Dutch colonizers, giving the sense of what might have been if roles were reversed or if the Dutch colonizers never managed to fully overpower the natives of the land. The camera has been used to omit a sense of emotional connecting between the viewer and the videos subjects, through portraiture. It gives a provocative and confrontational edge to the video. The camera angles used are often shot from below in the video, where it appears as if Youngsta is looking down on the viewer. This adds to the strong & confrontational critique te video and lyrics have on colonialization and Dutch settlers. The overall narrative of the video is a relcamation as well as critique on the problematics of colonialisation by Dutch settlers. The reclamation of self is also evident in the narrative as people of colour (POC) are wearing Dutch clothing, handling swords & rifles and roaming around the Dutch-style infrastructure. In terms of spatial apartheid the narrative suggests that there is still a residue of segregation in the contemporary day. The narrative places those who were originally at the lower end of the hierarchy/the subaltern/the oppressed & swapped it around by placing them at the top of the food chain & the oppressors/colonizers at the bottom. The realities of Cape Town that are being suggested are that POC do still feel the after effect of apartheid more than white people, & that we still today are fighting discrimination and oppression. The image of the ‘Cape Malay’, ‘Muslim’ or ‘coloured’ persons in the video is portrayed as resilient, overcoming and preservering. Prevailant in the presence of negativity.
