Desert Star by Michael Connelly is the latest book in his Ballard & Bosch series. “Renee Ballard has taken over the Open/Unsolved unit. Bosch agrees to work with her as long as he can work on on old case - one where a family was killed and buried in the desert. Bosch finds a break in another case with an unusual source of DNA. And discovers a serial killer that’s been killing for years.” Like all Connelly books, this is a stand-alone so you don’t need to have read any of the previous books. This is a police procedural but Connelly finds ways to make it interesting and new. He does include a genealogy expert which seems to be a big thing for cold cases now. There is great chemistry between Ballard and Bosch. I like that MC has allowed Bosch to age over the years. And I hope he’s not retiring him for good especially with the revelations in this book. Connelly gets my vote for best killer name - “Finbar McShane” Do you have a better one? The Dark Hours by Michael Connelly is the 4th book in his Ballard & Bosch series. “Ballard seeks shelter on New Year’s Eve to avoid the shower of lead from the guns fired in celebration. She is called out to a scene where someone has been shot. She ties it back to a cold case that Bosch investigated. They think it’s a cop. This time he knows someone is after him.” This is a bleak LA Police force that Bosch writes about. Covid and social unrest have driven many of the officers inside and away from solving crimes - many just putting their time in until retirement. Ballard is different. She just wants to catch bad guys - even when it’s not her responsibility. Connelly weaves another case in that has a wild ending also. There’s some surprising news about Bosch. Connelly gives us more great crime fiction. The Night Fire is the newest Bosch/Ballard book from Michael Connelly. Still enjoying the new character of Renee Ballard. MC does a great job with the dynamic between old-school Bosch and Ballard who mostly wants to play by the rules. But the both want to catch the bad guy whoever it is. Lots of stories going on here, but Connelly brings them together. We find out about the night fire.
