Ink Blood Sister Scribe ★ ★ ★ ☆
I so badly wanted to fall head over heels for Ink Blood Sister Scribe. While I certainly didn't hate it, I didn't fall in love with it as I had hoped. The magical world is compelling, but I never really connected with any characters.
My biggest problem with the story is that none of the primary characters have any real agency in their story. They're all reacting to the world or running around on the orders/advice of one person. Esther went on the run because her dad told her to. Joanna stays locked away at home, not even letting her mother in, again because her father told her told. And Nicholas doesn't really have any agency either if we're being honest.
Oh, who's Nicholas? He's the surprise third perspective of this book. He's not mentioned in the description for some reason. His story also arrives too late in the book for my liking. Didn't give us enough time to get to know him, you know?
All things said and done; Ink Blood Sister Scribe was an okay read. Not my favorite, but not bad.

Book of Night is the adult debut by Holly Black. I would call this urban fantasy/horror. There is a girl, Charlie, with a past. There are people, called gloamists, who can manipulate their shadows. There are people without shadows and shadows without people. (They’re Blights and are dangerous) Charlie has to find a missing book or bad things will happen. The story and background building took a while to get into. The final act was better and there was a surprising reveal. I kept thinking of Peter Pan (Wendy sewing his shadow) but there was never any mention of that. I was also reminded of The Book of M (where everyone loses their shadow) The whole story felt weird and I had some interesting dreams. 💭 Read the acknowledgments to see some interesting comments from Black about the writing process for this book. Away with our normal, ever-so-scintillating intros and straight to a challenge: Can you read Matthew Vollmer’s answer to Rebecca Foster’s first question without coming to a profound new realization about words and thought, seeing and feeling? Give it a shot.
Then read Rebecca’s review of Matthew’s All of Us Together in the End. Then buy the book.
We’re outta here.

📚 Review 📚 Listen for the Lie
Okay, it's official. I love the podcast/murder mystery trope, which is admittedly a bit funny since I don't listen to true crime podcasts. Apparently, I don't mind the concept as long as it's fully rooted in fiction. Anyway, Listen for the Lie was a blast to read.
Right off the bat, it's made clear that Lucy doesn't know whether or not she killed her best friend. So we don't know what the truth will reveal. Will it be her innocence? Or her condemnation? It's a different twist on the unreliable narrator.
Likewise, Listen for the Lie is split into two points of time: the present (obviously) and the past as Lucy remembers it. We can't entirely trust these memories since they resurface thanks to external stimuli, but that makes them all the more interesting.
Listen for the Lie is a solid read. I wouldn't mind seeing this turn into a series. Perhaps following Ben Owens on different seasons of his podcast?

Something inside me broke, and I was no longer only crying for my shattered heart but for the girl I used to be — the one who'd believed in light and love and the goodness of the world. That girl was gone.

I judge books by their covers and I’m usually right. It’s how I found this book which has become one of my all time favorites. Add to it the incredible descriptive visuals and now I have a list of paintings I want to create. Goes to show you never know where creativity will spark. Now that it’s over I need something new…what are you reading? #modernmagicreads
