When we last mentioned Edward Templemore, we stated that he was a lieutenant of the admiral's ship on the West India station, commanding the tender. Now the name of the tender was the Enterprise; and it was singular that she was one of two schooners built at Baltimore, remarkable for their beauty and good qualities: yet how different were their employments! Both had originally been built for the slave-trade: now one hoisted the English pennant, and cruised as the Enterprise; the other threw out the black flag, and scoured the seas as the Avenger.
— Frederick Marryat, The Pirate
Two-masted schooner off Gibraltar, Julius Prömmel, 1834. With her two raked masts, this British schooner has the same lines as a Baltimore clipper.

The American Clipper USS Rossie and British ship, Princess Amelia engaging, on September 16, 1812.
"Commodore Joshua Barney in the Baltimore-built Clipper Schooner USS Rossie of 14 guns and 120 men sailed on September 7. On the 9th, a British squadron of 3 ships vainly tried to overhaul him and, on the 12th, a British frigate chased him for 6 hours and then gave up. On the 16th, ROSSIE fell in with the British ship, PRINCESS AMELIA, an armed trader, and for one hour there was a steady combat. The Rossie was badly cut up in sails and rigging but her hull and spars escaped. She had 7 men hurt, one severely. The PRINCESS AMELIA was badly cut up alow and aloft and had her captain, sailing master, and a seaman killed and 7 wounded before she surrendered."

Andrew looks at himself in the mirror. He has electric clippers in one hand and his phone in the other, and debates which one he should turn to first. He flicks his thumb over the button of the clippers and it starts vibrating viciously in his hand. Another flick and it turns off just as quickly.
He unlocks his phone without looking and presses speed dial. He puts it on speaker and while it rings he flicks the button; on, off, on, off. On.
He starts at the front and just as the first strands of thick blond hair fall to the sink the dial tone stops and labored breathing can be heard in its place.

But while he is fully prepared to take care of his new husband, he had no clue what he was signing up for.

He wanted to stay this time. He’d even been dumb enough to think there was a minor chance he could pull it off. He knows better now, back in the seat of a hotwired car and heading North on instincts learned under the threat of death. Nathaniel fights until he runs, and he runs every fucking time.

Pride of Baltimore II, a replica topsail schooner built to the lines of an 1812-era Baltimore Clipper.
They were used in naval service, illegal trading, and for carrying light cargoes. But the Baltimore Clippers received their true recognition for their role in the War of 1812. The Clippers were used to prey on English merchant ships and run blockades. If and when discovered they were able to outsail their opponents and therefore were able to keep on schedule better than their counterparts. In this way the Baltimore Clippers were responsible for more than 500 sinkings or seizures of British ships.

NASA releases Webb images of Jupiter On the heels of Tuesday's release of the first images from NASA's James Webb Space Telescope, data from the telescope's commissioning period is now being released on the Space Telescope Science Institute's Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes. The data includes images of Jupiter and images and spectra of several asteroids, captured to test the telescope's instruments before science operations officially began July 12. The data demonstrates Webb's ability to track solar system targets and produce images and spectra with unprecedented detail. Fans of Jupiter will recognize some familiar features of our solar system's enormous planet in these images seen through Webb's infrared gaze. A view from the NIRCam instrument's short-wavelength filter shows distinct bands that encircle the planet as well as the Great Red Spot, a storm big enough to swallow the Earth. The iconic spot appears white in this image because of the way Webb's infrared image was processed. "Combined with the deep field images released the other day, these images of Jupiter demonstrate the full grasp of what Webb can observe, from the faintest, most distant observable galaxies to planets in our own cosmic backyard that you can see with the naked eye from your actual backyard," said Bryan Holler, a scientist at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, who helped plan these observations. Clearly visible at left is Europa, a moon with a probable ocean below its thick icy crust, and the target of NASA's forthcoming Europa Clipper mission. What's more, Europa's shadow can be seen to the left of the Great Red Spot. Other visible moons in these images include Thebe and Metis. "I couldn't believe that we saw everything so clearly, and how bright they were," said Stefanie Milam, Webb's deputy project scientist for planetary science based at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. "It's really exciting to think of the capability and opportunity that we have for observing these kinds of objects in our solar system." Scientists were especially eager to see these images because they are proof that Webb can observe the satellites and rings near bright solar system objects such as Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars. Scientists will use Webb to explore the tantalizing question of whether we can see plumes of material spewing out of moons like Europa and Saturn's moon Enceladus. Webb may be able to see the signatures of plumes depositing material on the surface on Europa. "I think that's just one of the coolest things that we'll be able to do with this telescope in the solar system," Milam said. Additionally, Webb easily captured some of Jupiter's rings, which especially stand out in the NIRcam long-wavelength filter image. That the rings showed up in one of Webb's first solar system images is "absolutely astonishing and amazing," Milam said. "The Jupiter images in the narrow-band filters were designed to provide nice images of the entire disk of the planet, but the wealth of additional information about very faint objects (Metis, Thebe, the main ring, hazes) in those images with approximately one-minute exposures was absolutely a very pleasant surprise," said John Stansberry, observatory scientist and NIRCam commissioning lead at the Space Telescope Science Institute. Webb also obtained these images of Jupiter and Europa moving across the telescope's field of view in three separate observations. This test demonstrated the ability of the observatory to find and track guide stars in the vicinity of bright Jupiter. But just how fast can an object move and still be tracked by Webb? This was an important question for scientists who study asteroids and comets. During commissioning, Webb used an asteroid called 6481 Tenzing, located in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, to start the moving-target tracking "speed limit" tests. Webb was designed with the requirement to track objects that move as fast as Mars, which has a maximum speed of 30 milliarcseconds per second. During commissioning, the Webb team conducted observations of various asteroids, which all appeared as a dot because they were all small. The team proved that Webb will still get valuable data with all of the science instruments for objects moving up to 67 milliarcseconds per second, which is more than twice the expected baseline—similar to photographing a turtle crawling when you're standing a mile away. "Everything worked brilliantly," Milam said. TOP IMAGE....Jupiter, center, and its moon Europa, left, are seen through the James Webb Space Telescope’s NIRCam instrument 2.12 micron filter. Baltimore’s Bar District
Fell’s Point has two proud boasts: It was the birthplace of the Baltimore Clipper and, at one time, had more than fifty bars and saloons. If the walls of these buildings could talk, they would tell tales of hard drinking, outbreaks of disease, and the drugging and kidnapping of strong young men to serve as unwilling deckhands onboard ship. Such was the way of things in port towns in centuries past. And with this kind of history it’s no surprise that some unwilling souls are still being spotted along these brick-paved streets around Alliceanna and Thames.
The Horse You Came In On Saloon boasts several things, all with great conviction. It’s the oldest drinking establishment in Fell’s Point, dating back to before the Revolution. It’s the last place in which Edgar Allan Poe ever took a drink-they say he fell facedown in the gutter staggering back from a night’s bender here. And they say a ghost that everyone calls Edgar makes his presence felt here all the time.
They also relate that cash register drawers fly open at random. The chandeliers swing for no good reason. And sometimes, to appease the ghost, the staff will leave a glass of whiskey out for him at closing time. Those are the rumors, and when we asked Mike the barman about it, he confirmed another: One night after closing time, something slammed shut the heavy door of the safe in the office. This heavy metal door was hard enough for a barman to move; it seemed unlikely that gravity or a guest of wind could do it. With a laugh that wasn’t entirely mirthful, Mike told us he closed up pretty fast after that.
The Cat’s Eye Pub at one time could have been more accurately named the Cat House. During renovations to the place, workers discovered a system of switches wired to the upstairs to receive customers. This had clearly been a fast-turnaround operation. Naturally, the switch system hadn’t worked for longer than anyone could remember, and by the end of the renovations it was safely hidden behind a wallboard. But many insist that it’s possible to hear clicking behind the wall, as if the ghosts of the former working girls haven’t quite shaken their work ethic even in death. But the weirdest tale of all is one of the co-founders of Fell’s Point Ghost Tour tell. Amy Lynwander and Melissa Garland spent years pulling together the tales they relate on their tour, during the research phase Garland visited the Cat’s Eye and bought a T-shirt from a barman there. When she returned to the bar a few years later to tell him he would be mentioned on the tour, the staff looked very disturbed and named had died six years earlier, a clear four years before she claimed she had bought the T-shirt from him.
Bertha’s Restaurant, with its famous, if uninventive, slogan “Eat Bertha’s mussels,” is a favorite haunt of paranormal watchers. This tends to make the tales of the place a little unreliable, since people looking for ghosts tend to find this evidence they want. The number of photographs from Bertha’s we have seen with orbs in them is huge . . . and after the event, it’s hard to tell whether these faint circular blobs are ectoplasm or dust or some strange refraction in a flawed camera lens. But the sheer volume of Bertha’s stories is hard to ignore. A few years back, when the Maryland Ghost and Spirit Association had a dinner at the restaurant, most of the people present were getting dozens of cloudy flaws in their pictures, swearing that these were spirits transit lacking the energy to take on their human shape as they moved.
For those who aren’t impressed by such evidence, there’s a stained glass window in the restaurant that responds very strangely to electromagnetic field detectors; it can elicit wide EMF detector readings that swing from the edge of the red back to a normal ambient green without any apparent electronic interference. Like most places in Fell’s Point, Bertha’s used to lodge people in the upper rooms in times when yellow fever and typhus were rife in the port towns. People who hear strange noises on second-story floors or see the owner’s cat hissing down the fall or feel strange presences in the rooms (and these people are many) like to pin their experiences on victims of some nasty outbreak who aren’t yet ready to quit the vibrant bar district. After all, it’s much cleaner and safer than it was in centuries past. And all the really interesting characters seem to have stuck around.

In Baltimore City, MD: 12 y/o gentle & affectionate senior found in rough condition with a traumatic, painful ear amputation - BARCS, Baltimore MD
Vin Diesel- 12 years, altered male, 8lbs
FELV-/FIV-
12-year-old Vin Diesel may not be looking or feeling his best (and that's quite the understatement), but his personality and demeanor are still so delightful. He is incredibly sweet, and given his condition, it would be no surprise if he was less than thrilled with our advances/handling, so his affectionate nature still is a testament to his resilient, though gentle, soul. Even painful and uncomfortable, Vin Diesel could not quiet his purrs during his intake examination.
Poor Vin Diesel was brought to the shelter at just the right time. The Good Samaritan who found him noted that his ear was injured, appearing to be ripped or torn off. Upon examination, our vets noted that aside from a fairly recent and traumatic amputation of his right ear, Vin Diesel also had an elevated temperature, small lacerations likely due to inexperience grooming via clippers/scissors, and is very underweight. We've started him on pain meds, but he will need surgical repair.
No senior should spend their days in a shelter, and sweet Vin Diesel here is no exception. This fella has been through more than what any animal ever should, and he deserves to get the care he needs and spend the rest of his golden years in retirement, in the warmth and comfort of a home. Vin Diesel is available immediately for rescue pick-up.
Please let us know if your organization can help!
Thank you,
