What are your thoughts on TWCFM? I've watched it so many times, and I feel like I can never form a coherent opinion about it beyond "It has a lot of stuff I like and some stuff I don't like", so it's so interesting to hear what other people have to say about it!
(Oh boy... Shouldn't have asked me about twcfm, essay incoming)
Yeah! TWCFM is a puzzler of a show cuz by all rights I shouldn't like it at all. But I do.
I'm not a huge fan of the artstyle, I don't like nudity, not the biggest Fujiko fan, and the things that happen in it (all of Zenigata, all of Oscar, the school episode, the ending? The flashbacks, the drugs) are pretty gross and I hate to see em.
YET! I love twcfm :) I sing it's praises to people and get them to watch it for themselves, and I think it has to do with the character exploration. Twcfm lets itself dig into the sadder or just more psychological sides of the characters and I think it does it very successfully!
I could (and did) talk for hours about Jigen in this show and how they looked explicitly at how lost he feels in the world. And how he moors himself so completely to anyone he thinks is a kindred spirit and who he might protect, but ends up getting hurt.
This show has one of the sweetest Goemons despite him looking like an agent of death and his interactions with Fujiko show how he idealizes people in his head and that his heart is not really one for the assassin life (like the manga said). He's almost an innocent despite all his crimes.
Lupin... I was so surprised when he pulled his first goofy face in the show. The style made me think he might just be serious and mean. But he's funny! And his dynamic with Jigen and Fujiko is sooooo good. This show really helped my understanding of his and Fujiko's relationship.
FUJIKO! Wow they did so right by her here. Before I knew who had directed it, I had to think a woman had some significant hand in this show because though the nudity is gratuitous, it's powerful and it's in Fujiko's control. She's never bashful or ashamed, she's comfortable at all times and uses that comfort as a weapon against those who are trying to objectify her. Plus, we get the introduction of her character thesis (for Koike but I like to carry it over) which I really like: forget the past, who you are is based on your choices in the present. For a character whose look and identity are so amorphous across the series and in her line of work, I liked that her power came from fundamentally being herself.
Plus! She's so capable and has such an interesting relationship with each of the gang members. I loved seeing her battle wits with Lupin and keep up/get the upper hand! I've always thought that her betrayals and the fujilup dynamic would be much more sympathetic for Fujiko if we saw it from her pov. And it's true. They're having fun. I just wish more episodes from her pov existed so we could really appreciate her. Plus, even though it's artificial, it's good to see her with some internal conflict. Hehe I'm terrible and am always a sucker for some self-loathing and Fujiko gets that here.
Overall for the ending, I'm glad we didn't actually learn her backstory. Initially, I felt cheated but now I think she's the kind who works better without some sob story or any canon background at all tbh, and it works so wonderfully with the show's forget your past thesis. She is herself and that's inherent. For all this show's gritty look and content, it's actually quite soft I think.
Good thing there are only four main characters in the show! Can you imagine if they had tried to make a gritty Zenigata? Yikes, that could have been a disaster :)
#lupin iii#bananasks#sorry about the rambling. i don't think I've ever talked about twcfm casually and in passing 😅

Widow
1) I have the new Nova skin on widow as of now2) Probably Talon or Nova, i like the hair3) I have the mistletoe one equipped right now that I bought immediately once I saw it4) I like curtain call, because if you do it next to a wall you can see her butt ;;)5) For the voicelines, I like the french ones because her actress is amazing6) I have 48 hours on her and practice trickshotting/flicking/sniping for 15 minutes before i get into a game7) She definitely needs more event skins and event stuff. She’s pretty well balanced, and in the hands of a good player she is deadly on attack and defence.

39 and 47 for the bookworm ask game <3
39. Do you read reviews before picking up a book?
OOH I think mostly I check out the general consensus (star rating, mostly) along with some written reviews on Storygraph. I like it more than Goodreads because it seems less prone to hype/bombing so far.
Other than that I go off old-fashioned newspaper reviews at times (mostly for Dutch books), as well as recs from my coworkers, who do know my reading habits best.
But reviews are hardly the sole basis for a yes or no. I've given low/less-rated books a chance if they have something they promise that piques my interest.
47. What are the last three books you read?
I just finished Never Flinch by Stephen King which was a pretty good read if you're into King and some unconventional procedural novels.
Before that it was The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame, a surprisingly unhinged-yet-cosy collection of short stories.
And third recent was A Dark and Drowning Tide by Allison Saft which was exactly something with decent reviews, a hyped coworker, and a promising premise that left me quite disappointed in the end. I could talk about why but then we'd be here forever lol.

1, 3,4, and 11 for the writing asks! <33
WOOOOO OKAY LET'S GO
1. Have you pulled inspiration from media sources other than the property your fic is related to (a plot point from a TV show that has nothing to do with the characters/setting of the fic, a line from a book, etc.)? If so, for which story? Why did you find that media source compelling?
Ooohoho okay, this is a bit hard because I pick my inspo's from a lot of different things. Carrie has always been a drive for me to write intertextual stuff, but that's more a form thing. Hounds is the most specific in that I took the way werewolf transformations were done in The Quarry (that Until Dawn game) and tweaked it a bit more to my liking. Phantom Pain is basically the Bent-Neck Lady episode from Flanagan's Hill House cranked up a bit on how trippy it gets. The rest of the Ghost fics take some of that, some from urban myth stuff, and some from Lake Mungo in the way a ghost can exist in both past and future at the same time. SAIEW had The Thing and some changeling/fae lore at its foundation; Nyghtegale The Green Knight (mostly the movie tbh); and for WTKAMW I had a list of inspirations/similar media at the end.
All have their purpose, either as a jumping off point or some more direct reference. It tends to be a mix of 'ha what if I put x character in this scenario' and 'I think I can have fun with this concept so let me try something out'. Fic's great for that to see if things work or not.
3. What is the most amount of research you’ve done for the smallest detail? What was the detail and how much time/effort went into researching it?
WTKAMW takes the crown for it because there's multiple instances. Tracking down footage from a Cranberries concert in New Jersey and the set of clues from a specific episode of Jeopardy! happened within the same chapter. For this fic I also went looking for when/if Capri Suns were able to be referenced in the US at the time that the fic takes place. My only excuse is that I was writing my thesis and very much in a research mood, as well as that I'm a little freak for trivial knowledge.
4. Share a headcanon about (character name) in (story title)!
Left blank so dealer's choice I suppose! Van in Come As You Are (the x-men au) is the only one besides Jackie who could (so far) of the group survive Shauna's spontaneously induced implosion thing, with Van also having a decent chance at killing Shauna with it. Her whole thing hinges on directing the force of something aimed at her away from her body, most of the time bouncing it back to the source. Part of her backstory included saving her mom in a housefire that she comes out of unscathed herself. She'd be basically indestructable, but I ended up scrapping an idea for a scene on the soccer field that did more with it.
11. If you had to pick a single trope to read for the next seven-and-half years, which trope would that be?
Pretty easy pick for angst-with-a-happy-ending. It's the best of both worlds. Can be short-ish, can be long, but it usually pays off enough on the suffering and sweet.

Hey, I hope this isn’t too weird but I was wondering if it’s possible to follow you on Bluesky? I tried to and it says that you blocked me, I’m assuming because my account is pretty empty, I just use it to view art and stuff and don’t personally post. If not, that’s completely cool
oh hey! yeah i'm very quick to block empty things, nothing personal in that case! if you're skywalkerfruit that block's lifted <3

hey!!! ace attorney yj anon here
and OMG i totally agree with most of the points that you mentioned in your s3 post!
yes, there are some MAJOR flaws in the show i can't deny that, (especially when the actors themselves don't like the writing choices) and people are right for critiquing for the show in those places! it shows that they enjoy the show and wanted it to be better!
HOWEVER, the reaching point when you start echoing the negative parts more and forgetting the good parts of it, there needs to be a balance!
i know the reason why s3 has so much shit on it. it's the big turnaround for finding the questionable parts of the show entirely, and that's why people are unhappy with the answers they're given.
but please, it's not all doom and gloom (hopefully) and besides all the questionable shit that doesn't make sense or the writing choices...
the show isn't your life.
(whoops got carried away there 😗)
Hey! And thanks, idk how I feel about the season in the long run, but so far it's been a decent thumbs-up for me. Personally my biggest issues have been with it beating audience over the head with some things while still trying to maintain big mysteries elsewhere and it fucks with the vibe a bit (along with the usual suspects of pacing and funky line work).
Want to take this mention of actors to jump off to a point I did brush past a bit in the og post, but I don't feel good about how the show has gone about the actors whose parts have died. Having the people who make your show enjoy that process is a big part of making something Good, and I don't think this attitude towards the cast is good/healthy for that.
There's echoing, yes, but That Being Said, it really varies per person what they deem bad, suffiicient, or good on a show like this. Some people hated the ending of The Sopranos and Lost while others vibe with it. I'm not here to call anyone stupid over their opinions or critiques of this show/season. It's valid to feel disappointment when expectations aren't exactly met. Sometimes it can lead to better enjoyment of something in hindsight for what it did differently, and sometimes that change was a rugpull-for-rugpull's sake. I've encountered my fair share of those.
I'm also not equipped to talk about racially iffy writing choices. I don't know the writers, and I don't see anything particularly glaring in characters dying off on a show like this, but yeah it doesn't look good when you add/elevate characters that don't add more to the story for a plotline that could've been taken up by a poc character that did just die with less than ideal narrative satisfaction (is that the right way of putting it?).
I'm keeping my hands off from judging anything on the process done by people I don't know, but there have been some hard missed opportunities for this season, as much as I did enjoy it.
#yellowjackets#yellowjackets spoilers#i dont interact much with the negative analyses in part because of tone and in part because i am giving this season the benefit of the doub#mostly because i did not vibe with season 2 and this got me back in#but there are definitely some good points being raised#in lighter news#talking with a pal about doing a low-key fic event to process all this in a fun way#bananask
