So 'Ethan' is Hebrew name, and means 'firm, strong, and enduring'. Our persevering protagonist. Fitting huh?
'Donna' is Italian, meaning 'Lady' or 'woman'. If it's 'Don', that's for male, meaning 'Lord' or 'gentleman' winkwonk. It says at wiki that the surname 'Beneviento' came from the Italian town, 'Benevento', which means 'good wind'.
'Salvatore'. Italian origin name. Means 'saviour'. It's theorized that his family were doctors, so makes sense. 'Moreau' is from old French! Means 'dark-skinned'.
Now 'Karl'...... very ironic name. And I am nothing if not a lover for ironies. Because that's german name meaning 'free man'. His surname is pretty interesting too, because, you see, 'Eisenberg' means 'Iron Mountain'. His boss battle winkwonk. 'Berg' means mountain. 'Heißen' could mean 'Hot' or 'to call'. Hot mountain. Fucking volcano amirite.
Rosemary, the herb, it symbolizes remembrance. Put it on the coffin, and it means the memory of the deceased shall never fade. It also means honoring the fallen.
Mia went MIA for 3 years aha-
'Mia' has many origins. Latin/spanish/Italian origin says 'mine'. Welp ethan's cold dead ass sure ain't yours no mo-
Hebrew origin says 'bitter'. Hmmmmm.
Sorry I just, really can't understand why the fuck she'd lie, twice, to her loyal, loving husband like that who went through hell for her, a normal, boring IT guy who did all that for his family and her lie costed him his life- didn't even tell him he's a walking corpse- had he known, would he still had mold bebe? Was the whole Village incident preventable?
It was your fault to work for a crime syndicate and lie to your husband! And get him killed! Trauma? Don't wanna talk about it? Well at least you owed it to him to let him know he's dead. Dead. For 3 years you hid it. Had an infected kid with him. Who ultimately got detected in Miranda's radar. He died for her. Your daughter is forever tormented because of her power and trauma. And lack of father. Ffs. What you crying for. Smh.
Got derailed from frustration. Ahem.
'Miranda' is Latin origin. 'To be wondered at', 'Worthy of admiration'. Truly, the priestess of the Black God.
'Eva' means 'life' or 'living one'. Again, interesting name.
Elena the village girl, Greek origin, her name means shining light. That got snuffed out in blazing fire. Her father, Leonardo, sure was Strong as Lion when he tore through those people. Also their surname Lupu means wolf. Lol.
'Lulian', the one who points gun at your face, his name is Romanian origin. It means 'youthful man'.
The owner of the grave at Beneviento mansion, Claudia, that name means 'lame'. As in, crippled. Imagine Donna having had someone she cared about. Someone wheelchair bound. All the more heartbreaking.
'Angie' means 'messenger' or 'messenger of god'. What's with these names and symbolism hm capcom?
Ooh almost forgot Dimitrescu family! A sin punishable by gutting from long claws.
That surname means, 'follower of Demeter'. Yes that Greek goddess of fertility. 'Alcina' is Greek origin, meaning 'strong willed, opinionated', but it also says that it is from a poem. Beautiful sorcerer who ruled over the world.
Oh would you look at that? Hebrew origin of 'Bela' means 'devouring' or 'destructive'! Czech origin says 'white'. Well she is quite pale. And very hungry.
'Daniela' means, 'God is my judge'.
'Cassandra'? 'The one who shines and excels over men'. Loud and clear Cassie.
You know the big lycan with hammer? Uriaş? Yeah his name is Romanian. It means 'huge' or 'giant'.
Vâlcolac is Romanian for werewolf, Moroaică and Samcă are both from folklore, and Cadou is Romanian for 'gift'. Yeah some gift it is.
And that's about it. I'm loving all these symbolism. Intentional or not, it makes writing so much better.

"Useless efforts"
I found a very interesting letter from Fouché to Murat I’ve never seen before, on Autographes-Manuscripta, (the same site that featured a great letter from Lannes a while back). Stuff tends to disappear from this site after a time (a lot of these letters end up auctioned off to private buyers), so I’ve snagged the image of it. It’s difficult to read but I can at least translate the description and excerpts provided by the site:
The date of the letter is 16 May 1809.
Description:
A beautiful and long letter on Napoleon, the empire, its main allies and rivals, and especially the dynastic deficiency which threatens the Empire on the eve of the battle of Wagram against the Austrian army. Indeed, Fouché approached Talleyrand to organized Murat’s accession to the throne in the event of the Emperor’s accidental death on campaign.
Excerpt:
I have not had the opportunity to write Your Majesty since the departure of M. Salicetti [Corsican friend of Napoleon, former Minister of the Police and War in the Kingdom of Naples; Napoleon asked Murat to send him to Rome]. A lot has happened since that time. The Emperor left Paris on 13 April and arrived in Vienna on May 10. I hope that the Austrian monarchy, our enemy, will no longer be relieved and that the victor will at last occupy himself with constituting his dynasty in such a way that it will be sheltered from the storms. When it was learned in Paris that His Majesty had been hit by a bullet there was a unanimous wish that he would not leave his capital again before being able to leave children there. I’ve said it often and won’t stop repeating it: the friends of the Bonaparte dynasty will defend it with their courage and their blood, but they will make useless efforts if we have the misfortune to lose the Emperor before he gives the world heirs to his glory and his life. Our present situation is good outside and inside. Russia is still on good terms with us, and the Emperor Alexander seems sincerely attached to the Emperor Napoleon. Prussia is too little in the balance to count her. Austria is in dissolution. We are quiet inside—there is not a point in the empire where the slightest disorder can go unpunished. In Paris people always gossip, but they are good and docile there when they are not very irritated or tormented. We are sad during the Emperor’s absence and we impatiently await his return. The chronicle does not offer anything very remarkable. The archchancellor [Cambacérès] is still constant in his loves, the Prince of Benevento [Talleyrand] left the Baroness of Montmorency for the Countess R. de St Jean d’Angély. I counted on having the good fortune to write to the Queen [Caroline Murat] today, but I have had a fever for eight days and I have been asked to shorten this letter.
Fouché closes by telling Murat “I pray Your Majesty believe that at no time will he find a servant more faithful and more attached.”
Regarding the woman Fouché claims is Talleyrand’s new mistress, the Countess Regnaud de St. Jean-d’Angély, Napoleon.org claims this was merely Fouché trying to stir up trouble for her and her husband due to their anti-Bonaparte connections.
Here's the image of the original letter from Fouché to Murat, under a cut since it's a bit large.

Sicily: An Island at the Crossroads of History. Ch. 5- The End of the Kingdom
William, 'the Bad', took over in 1154. What prompted the nickname 'the bad'? He suffered from two main misfortunes: the first is that he was not his father, whose shoes it would be tough to fill; and the second, and more pertinent to the question of why he was nicknamed the "bad", is that his biographer hated his guts.
William was a thoroughly oriental (when you read "oriental", it means "eastern", which for many of us means the far east. But for Europeans at the time, the 'east' was what we now call the middle east.) character, more like a Sultan than a King. Many of the Norman barons, particularly in Apulia, had no real love for his kingdom. They found themselves a leader, Robert of Loritello, who proposed a joint venture with Michael Paleologus of Constantinople, to drive William out of southern Italy. Remember that the "Kingdom" included Sicily, the island, and the territories on the southern end of the Italian peninsula.
In 1156, Campania and most of Apulia, the aforementioned territories on the Italian peninsula, were in Byzantine hands and it looked as if William would be chased out. But William fought back and the Greeks went chicken, lost the battle... and everything they had gained to that point. The Pope had sided against William, but having chosen the losing side, was forced to sign the Treaty of Benevento in 1159.
William returned to Sicily with a rather higher international standing than before the war, but internal discontent. His emir of emirs was assassinated in 1160, and less than a year later, a palace revolt took place in which William's young son, Roger, was killed, and William himself was lucky to escape alive.
When he returned in 1162, Muslims and Christians were at each other's throats.
He died in 1166. He was not a great king, but then again, following after his father Roger II would have made nearly anyone look bad in comparison. He was an excellent soldier, but he lacked equilibrium, and was unable to maintain the delicate balances on which the safety of his realm depended.
His 12 year old son William was to be the new King, but until he was old enough to be taken seriously, his mother found a capable administrator, one Stephan du Perche, to run things as Chancellor. He instituted some fair and needed reforms. No small feat in the atmosphere of distrust that existed. It may well be that such a thing may have required an outsider too. It's possible that no one inside would be considered impartial enough to have been trusted.
In 1167, William moved the court from Palermo to Messina, but the Greek population there would not accept the French, and in 1168, a rebellion broke out that left no Frenchmen alive. Surprisingly, the young 14-year-old king rode out and faced down the crowds. Ballsy move, and the people, when confronted with their king, ditched the attitude and support for the rebellion died away. In the aftermath though, it was decided that Stephen du Perche and the French would be better off out of Sicily altogether. Steve never understood that the nation's strength and survival depended on maintaining unity, and that was by nature heterogenous and fissile, and that unity must be imposed from above.
This is a relevant bit of history. How does a government oversee a multi-cultural, and easily divided, citizen base? Tolerance and respect are necessary ingredients, certainly. But tolerance and respect for those that are different from us isn't our natural state. We don't understand, and often just plain don't like, cultures that are different from our own. So we will need to tolerate them and render them respect, but if we can't do it on our own, then it needs to be enforced. Anyway... on with the history...
By 1168, William 'the good' was of age and crowned in Palermo. His reign was marked by peace and security. But...... he lacked some political wisdom. The search to find him a wife had been something of a celebrity thing in Sicily. A few matches were proposed but William wanted to know what they looked like before he'd commit. Joan, an English princess, daughter of King Henry II, but born in France, was a looker, so the marriage was on. They were apparently in love and happy.
Then the lack of political wisdom showed up. In 1183, Frederick Barbarossa proposed marriage of his son Henry with princess Constance of Sicily. The problem was, that if William and his wife Joanna didn't have any surviving kids, the reign would pass from the Norman Hauteville line to another house altogether. But while William and Joan still hadn't had any kids, they were young and there was time. Except, in 1189, the very thing they were hoping wouldn't happen, happened: William II of the Hautevilles died, and Constance became ruler, giving the kingdom to Henry of Hohenstaufen. This was the end of Norman Sicily.

Full resident evil village review: SPOILERS
So, let us start from the beginning. We began with Mia telling a fairy tale to Rosemary Winters (Rose). The fairy tale coincidentally falls in line with the four houses, Dimitrescu, Heisenburg, Benevento and Moreau. However, Mia cuts off the fairy tale in mid-sentence when she sees Rose had fallen asleep, leaving the fairy tale unfinished until the end of the game. There, the gameplay begins. We know that it has been three years since the Dulvey incident, and it had been covered up as a gas leak. After some shenanigans, Mia is gunned down from multiple points and killed by Chris Redfield. He takes Ethan and Rose, and the game begins. Ethan finds himself stranded alone beside a corpse, and he began strolling through a snowy path until he reaches the Village.
Ethan reaches the castle and meets the Dimitrescu family, which they proceed to torture him. For the rest of the castle gameplay, you will sneak past Lady D and take down the daughters one by one as they try to kill you. By killing them, it will anger Lady D in which she will turn into a Bloodborne type dragon. It was so fucking cool. After killing Lady D (;´༎ຶٹ༎ຶ`), Ethan will find a jar not knowing what it is, he shows it to the Duke and tells him that Rose was not at the castle in which Duke answers that he is holding his daughter, specifically her head. DUN DUN DUUUUUNN. That revelation hurt my head and made me not care about Lady D, to be honest. So, Ethan now has to collect four yellow jars containing Rose’s body parts for all other houses to assemble his daughter back. (Poor Ethan)
So on to the best part for me. The scariest part. I don’t want to spoil this, but that Baby was fucking nightmare fuel, like who in their twisted mind could create such an atrocity. The Benevento house reminded me so much of PT which was fucking amazing. It would be best if you played it yourself to feel what I’m saying. While at the Benevento house, Ethan hears Mia on the radio pleading with Ethan to forgive her, which was weird because she’s dead, right?
The Moreau house, or swamp, I have to say it’s one of my least favourite gameplay, though it’s still far better than Heisenberg gameplay. Salvator Moreau and Ethan’s interaction was hilarious. I loved how Ethan cannot see past this guy and kept underestimating him. I loved their interaction. And that’s all good, I have to say about that battle.
The Heisenberg, Ughhhhh. The part of this scenario dragged on, and I wouldn’t say I liked any part of it at all. I think the reason had to be the strip of the gothic aesthetic and villains variants that made this part not good. Heisenberg’s character arc felt rushed or just unfulfilling. Either, I had more enormous expectations for him.
After beating Heisenberg, Ethan faces Mother Miranda as she began teasing him. There we learned that Rose was perfected Evelyn or E type. And mother Miranda, by shapeshifting into Mia, wanted Rose to resurrect her Daughter Eva that died hundred years ago by Spanish Flue. She then rips out Ethan’s heart, seemingly killing him.
There we switch to Chris bolder punching Redfield. We found out that Miranda kidnapped Mia and turned into her, and took Rose, He no longer works for BSAA for some reason that is still unknown, and Canine began racing with BSAA to Miranda. Chris goes through a many Lycans hoard, stumbles upon Miranda’s lab; there, we got a bunch of lore dump.
Ozward E Spencer, you’ll remember him. Yeah, Miranda, on the path to reviving her daughter, invited young Spencer to the village to work with her. However, their ideology clashed, and Spencer thought that he should work to further human development, not for one person like Miranda. There Spencer revealed that he found “the Progenitor” in Africa and began developing the viruses and Founding Umbrella logo that was carved in the cave, creating the Umbrella Corporation. The village is the origins of the Umbrella and everything that follows.
Chris finds Mia (the real one)
Ethan wakes up in a wasteland, incredibly cold and suffering. Evelyn appears out of nowhere and reveals that Ethan shouldn’t be walking. She was indicating that Ethan died three years ago in the Baker mansion by Jack Baker. By unknown means, the mold consumed his dead body and revived him, making him a perfected E type. (irony with his name starting with letter E)
Miranda resurrects Rose from the mould, and Ethan fights Miranda, killing her and killing himself in the process. Ethan and Chris take Rose, trying to flee, but a giant mutation is heading their way, and the only way to stop it is to blow the whole village sky high. Ethan, already dying, couldn’t move forward, takes a detonator and gives Rose to Chris, telling him to take care of her and (teach her how to be strong)(ᗒᗣᗕ)՞. Chris, Mia and Rose, along with Canine, escapes the village before detonation. Ethan dies a hero. (;´༎ຶٹ༎ຶ`) Then time skip happens, IDK how long, but we see a girl who is merely identical to Ethan exited the bus onto a graveyard; it’s Rose visiting Ethan’s grave. A man in a black suit was waiting for her in a black car, and he makes a joke calling her Evelyn, which angers Rose. She enters the car, and the man tells her that she’s a lot like Ethan. While the vehicle droves away but suddenly stop beside an unknown person that we will not see. It ends with a cliffhanger, setting up the next entry.
During a credits a woman finishes the fairy tale.
I didn’t go to up most detail in this, trust me when i say you have to play the whole thing to experience what I’m saying. I loved it, yes there was some flaws but it was in a sense minor.
Welp, there was a lot of plot twist and a gut-wrenching revelation that I didn’t expect from this game. I loved Ethan not as a character but just as the protagonist in the Resident Evil game. I always felt that when Re goes back to the og characters, it becomes an action game. Ethan was to be a breath of fresh air. Even though he has gone through a lot, he endured every single pain thrown towards him and pushed forward. He isn’t Leon and Chris or even Jill and Claire, but I think that made him more unique.
I gave the game 8/10 hahah.

Deific/Major Familiars and the Table of Offers
As stated before, the Deific Familiar is the first Familiar one has to approach. It corresponds to the patron God or Goddess of the contemporary practitioners, although in the past the concept of “Divinity” in a non-christian sense got lost with the end of real paganism. From then on, these entities were addressed as more powerful Spirits.
A BIT OF HISTORY
In the middle ages and in the first modern era, the Deific/Major Familiar appeared as the head of the Procession of the Dominae Nocturnae (Signore della Notte, Ladies of the Night).
All throughout the Europe of this period, we always find the same theme, although called with different names: there’s a figure, the Deific Familiar, that procedes with a following of Spirits (usually women and associated with Fairies) and human Souls (the so called Witches, that evidently were non other than individuals that were having an extracorporeal experience) passing from house to house.
Those who wanted to have the favors of said Procession and of the Deific Familiar that was the head of it, would completely clean the house, putting everything in order, making the beds, etc. Then they proceded to prepare the table for these Spiritual guests, leaving food and drinks on the kitchen table for the night.
During the night, the Procession would enter the house, stopping to eat, drink, dance and sing and the Deific Familiar, with his/her wand, would have blessed the same food: the Procession could only eat the Spiritual aspect of the food, filling the Material aspect with prosperity and many other virtues.
In the morning, the blessed food was supposed to be eaten and the left overs preserved.
According to some scholars, the theme of the Procession of the Dominae Nocturnae has its origin in the theme of the Wild Hunt or the Procession of the Dead.
The Wild Hunt was the Procession of Spirits of those who fell honorably in battle, according to the Viking beliefs, the Einhejar, together with the Valkyries, guided by Wotan (Odin), and it was said that it could be possible to see it in some occasion in the battlefield.
This theme will slightly change in the christian epoque, becoming the Procession of the Dead, a procession of Spirits of those who died a violent death, suicides, non baptized children and people who weren’t evil enough to deserve eternal damnation in hell, but that could not access Paradise either (the concept of Purgatory was developed from here). This belief, even if born in the germanic/norse world, will spread throughout Europe, thanks to the extensive preaching of the christian priests, that, while trying to eradicate said beliefs in the population, obtained the opposite effect.
This theme would then be changed and adapted by every culture: Wotan was substituted with local figures, first among all, Hellequin (from “ Helle König”, the King of Hell, from which Dante developed the figure of Alichino, that later became the famous figure of Arlecchino, Harlequin).
From the initial Wild Hunt, two different Processions would be developed:
Procession of the Dead, with a male like Hellequin as the head
Procession of the Dominae Nocturnae, with a female like Diana or Aradia as the head. This theme also received the influence of the beliefs on Fairies. In numerous cases the figure head of the Dominae Nocturnae is also the head of the Fairies (Doamna Zinelor in Romania, the Fata Maggiore in Sicily, the Queen of Elphame in Great Britain).
This introduction is useful to understand how to choose our Deific Familiar. This Familiar was different in each region, although the european theme was the same. It depended on local latent beliefs, while the myth of the Procession was pan-european, thanks to the christian priests.
CHOOSING OUR FAMILIAR
Said choice must be thoughtful; we’re linking ourselves with a Spirit, a link that will probably last for all our lives. It cannot be taken lightly.
With this premise, the first thing to do is to seek documents of Witch trials in our area. Usually, the most useful ones are the ones before the 1550s, because around this moment in when the Church starts to associate Witchcraft with the Devil, so we risk to find trials that describe Satan as the head of the Procession, instead of other Spirits, like Diana, Aradia, la Signora del Gioco (Lady of the Game), and others. Said trials are completely useless for our ends.
Analizing these trials and the local folklore (like reading books of popular legends about Witches) we need to pay attention to:
the names of the heads of the Witches
the names of the heads of the Fairies
the names of the heads of the Wild Hunt/Procession of the Dead
the names of other figures deriving from pre-christian divinities present in the folklore
The facebook page “Gli Dei della Stregoneria Italiana” already did good part of the job. Of course this work isn’t exhaustive and it’s good practice to try and integrate it with a personal research, but it’s a good way to start.
[Translator note: I will list the names and the regions to help the non italian speakers that benefit from these translations]
Sicily: the Regina delle Fate (Queen of the Fairies), also called Savia Sibilla, Signora Greca, Signora Grazia, Donna Inguanto, Mandotta and Donna Zabella; the Re delle Fate (King of the Fairies) also called Re Cozzo or Re Cucco.
Sardinia: Diana (the sardinian Fate were called Janas); Maimone also called Maimulu and Mamuthone (probably derived from Dioniso Mainoles. Aradia (also called Mama Erodas, Arada, Araja or Rejusta) was also seen as the patron of the Janas.
Calabria: in this folklore, the table were prepared for the Fatae, that the local albanian minority also called Drekezit o Fiatazit. There are also the figures of the Sibilla Cumana, of the local Befana called Papparutu or Pacciarutu and a group of local healers called Cerauli that had St. Paul (substitution to Eracle) as their patron.
Apulia: the Patrona de la Cheise, figure similar to the Donne di Fori/Donne di Fuori/Patruni di Casa/Patruni di Luocu Siciliane. One salutes her saying:”Bon ggiorne a la Patrona de la Cheise, u mmaile ca esce e un bbeine ca triese” (”Good morning to the Patrona de la Cheise, an evil that goes away and a blessing that enters”). To protect yourself from the apulian Streghe, the Masciare, the locals said “Driana meste ca va pela vì” (”Master Diana that travels the roads”). The local paganism of the V sec. a.C. consists in the cult of a divinity of the Sun (Mitra or Apollo?) and a divinity of the Moon (Diana?). Dioniso is the god linked to the Tarantismo, substituted by St. Paul in later times.
Basilicata: the Madonna Nera di Viggiano, probably derived from Persefone, has a black face and wonders between the fields of wheat and the cattle, it was a dark divinity from the shadows of the earth’s womb, the farmers’ Persefone, an infernal goddess. We also find prayers to the Santo Sole (Saint Sun), probably a remainder of Apollo or Helios.
Molise: the cult of St. Cosma and St. Damiano comes from the cult of the Dioscuri and in part from the cult of Priapo. This region shares with Campania the figure of the Ianare, the local Streghe, and as a result of Diana that gives the name to these Streghe.
Campania: Diana gives the name to the local Streghe, the Ianare/Janare and it’s linked to the cult of the Noce di Benevento (the Walnut tree of Benevento), together with Godan (Odin) and Iside (Isis). The folklore mentions other gods: the Zucculara (Hekate), Cupindo (Cupido), Erodiade (Aradia) and the Sepilla la bella (the Sibilla Cumana).
Lazio: Aradia lead the Streghe to Rome and gathered them together the day of St. John, near the homonym basilica. We also read about the Meridiana or Marianna, a demon of noonday, probably deriving from Diana. Cupiddo (Cupid) was also worshipped.
Abruzzo: this region shares with Umbria and Marche the cult of the Sibilla Appenninica (also called the Sibilla Picena or the Sibilla di Norcia); probably derived from the cult of Cibele, Cupra, Nortia or Venere; others think this figure was the Sibilla of the god Pico. The goddess Angizia in the origin of the figure of St. Domenico di Cocullo. Some of the other cults are the goddess Ancharia and Ercole Curino, the goddess Maia, the god Hermes, the Pasqua Pefanij or Bboffe, a feminine figure linked to Epiphany.
Tuscany: the tuscanian Befana, has the same origin of the venetian Redodesa; the Fantasma, a figure linked to Hekate; the Maga Accina on mt. Amiata, linked to the Sibilla Appenninica. The belief in Diana and Aradia is documented by the archbishop Sant’Antonino in the XV sec d.C., long before Leland.
Emilia-Romagna: the goddess head of the Streghe is called the Domina Cursus and Sapiente Sibilla. Other pagan figures of the local folklore are: the Borda, deriving from Borvo/Bormo a celtic god that presides the thermal and spring waters; the Fata was corresponding to the germanic Perchta, seen as a nice old lady, very clean and with a welcoming attitude.
Again, it is vital that you make your own research by looking up the names of these divinities and accessing the documents of the trials.
Once obtained these names, starting from the region(s) that we choose as a point of reference and the call that we feel towards a specific divinity, we can operate the decision of our Deific Familiar.
THE TAVOLO DELLE OFFERTE
Now that we have chosen our Deific/Major Familiar, we can start with the Tavolo delle Offerte (the Table of Offerings), a table spread with food and drinks for our Familiar and their Procession.
Here is how it goes:
Thoroughly clean the house (or at least the room in which you’ll operate this ritual, usually the kitchen).
Set the table (if we’re forced to work in other rooms, an altar will suffice) with a clean tablecloth, table napkins, cutlery, dishes, glasses, a bottle of wine or another drink of choice and the following meals (first course, second course, side dish, dessert or fruit). You’ll also need one or more chairs, so that our guests can seat.
Recite a prayer to manifest that we’re leaving this offering to our Deific Familiar and its following, inviting them inside, allowing them to dance, eat, sing and drink inside our house and asking them to consume our food and to bless it after they consumed its Spiritual aspect, and to cast their blessing upon us, our house and to its inhabitants.
We can light some incense and leave some musical instruments as a further offer. Adding candles and tapers that represent our Deific Familiar, statues or images of them, flowers and so on, it’s also acceptable. These are contemporary additions, but the banquet is the necessary base of the offering.
In the morning, we will approach the table, thank the Deific Familiar and we’ll eat the blessed food. Upon finishing the meal, we’ll thank the Deific Familiar once more, we’ll tell them goodbye and procede to clean up.
WHEN AND HOW OFTEN LEAVE THE OFFER?
The foundation of the relationship with a Familiar Spirit is to nurture them, in order to fuel the link between ourselves and the Spirit. In the past, the Strega fed their Familiar once a day. In this age, some people make offering everyday, others a few times a week or even once a week. In my opinion [TN: the author’s opinion] we should make an offer at least once a week.

June 27, 2021 :: Prior to our vacation we had watched a WWII documentary that detailed the battles in Italy. We cringed at the bombing of the Abbey of Monte Cassino that left a smoldering ruin in its wake. We were shocked to learn that the Abbey that stands today was rebuilt in ten years after the war. Seriously, I don’t know how this was done. Artisans recreated the interior of the Abbey exactly as it was prior to the bombing. What a monumental task! The marble work alone blew our minds.
Tumblr media
While we were there we learned that this monastery has been fraught with disaster since its founding.
The first monastery on Monte Cassino was sacked by the invading Lombards around 570 and abandoned. Of the first monastery almost nothing is known. The second monastery was established by Petronax of Brescia around 718, at the suggestion of Pope Gregory II and with the support of the Lombard Duke Romuald II of Benevento. It was directly subject to the pope and many monasteries in Italy were under its authority. In 883 the monastery was sacked by Saracens and abandoned again. The community of monks resided first at Teano and then from 914 at Capua before the monastery was rebuilt in 949.
Are you seeing a pattern here?
The 11th and 12th centuries were the abbey's golden age. It acquired a large secular territory around Monte Cassino, the so-called Terra Sancti Benedicti, which it heavily fortified with castles. It maintained good relations with the Eastern Church, even receiving patronage from Byzantine emperors. It encouraged fine art and craftsmanship by employing Byzantine and even Saracen artisans. In 1057, Pope Victor II recognized the abbot of Monte Cassino as having precedence over all other abbots. Many monks rose to become bishops and cardinals, and three popes were drawn from the abbey.
By the 13th century, the monastery's decline had set in. In 1239, the Emperor Frederick II garrisoned troops in it during his war with the Papacy. In 1322, Pope John XXII elevated the abbey into a bishopric but this was suppressed in 1367. The buildings were destroyed by an earthquake in 1349, and in 1369 Pope Urban V demanded a contribution from all Benedictine monasteries to fund the rebuilding. In 1454 the abbey was placed in commendam and in 1504 was made subject to the Abbey of Santa Giustina in Padua.
Tumblr media
In 1799, Monte Cassino was sacked again by French troops during the French Revolutionary Wars. The abbey was dissolved by the Italian government in 1866. The building became a national monument with the monks as custodians of its treasures. In 1944 during World War II it was the site of the Battle of Monte Cassino and the building was destroyed by Allied bombing. It was rebuilt after the war.
The museums are well worth the price of the ticket and contain (among other treasures) a painting by Titian. Strolling through the museums proved a peaceful repast and we were glad for the air conditioning.

Helfert, Joachim Murat, chapter 1, part 3
Continuation of my attempt at translating an old Austrian book on Murat’s final years. Negotiations with Austria and Britain get interrupted because ... well, Napoleon called.
The King also established relations with England around this time and finally came to an agreement with Lord William Bentinck, who visited the island of Ponza from Sicily and repeatedly negotiated there with Murat's confidants, to the effect that if the King openly joined the alliance with all his might, he should be free to act in Italy; the only exception would be Sicily, where the English were protecting King Ferdinand IV. On the Appenine mainland, too, the English were to be present with armed force and allow for their forces to co-operate with the Neapolitan ones, albeit under their own command. Bentinck sent an aviso ship from Ponza to England to ask his cabinet for approval of what had been arranged with Joachim's confidants (June 1813).
The gulf between Napoleon and Murat widened. If the latter was already highly incensed by Cariati's mission, the secret meetings on the island of Ponza could not remain hidden from him for long, given the indiscretion of the London journals. The Paris Moniteur published ruthless articles, Baron Durand issued sharp notes to Gallo, which the king, for his part, did not allow to go unanswered; indeed, he threatened, if the Paris papers should again permit themselves to offend him, to have the French ambassador sent his passports. When at last Napoleon, now that the war was breaking out anew and was threatening to take on greater proportions, made the imposition on the King of Naples to send 20,000 men to Prince Eugène in Upper Italy, without any mention of himself, their rightful warlord, Murat became furious, tore the paper to shreds, which he trampled underfoot, and swore: "Not one company shall he get that is not under my command!"
Nevertheless, once more an understanding was reached between the two, for the Emperor, pressed on all sides, could not do without the military aid from Naples and the support of his old comrade in arms. Caroline received a letter from her brother in a cordial tone, Fouché and Ney, who were personally close to the King, had to exert a pacifying influence on him and he decided, no doubt also with the help of his wife, to rejoin the Grande Armée (August 1813). The Vienna negotiations had not reached a conclusion because Cariati did not have the necessary powers; no reply had yet been received from London to Bentinck's request. Murat, however, although he now faced both Austria and England as enemies in the theatre of war, did not want to treat the initiated negotiations as terminated, but left arrangements in Naples to keep the negotiations going in spite of his absence in the field.
On the Saxon battlefields, the brilliant cavalry general fought as boldly and bravely as ever. But disaster could not be averted; the battle of Leipzig completed the downfall of the once Grand Army. Murat saw his imperial brother-in-law once more before he hurried back to his kingdom: but he also saw Count Mier, who had been sent by Metternich to the imperial headquarters (October 1813). When he arrived back in his capital, his mind was set on two things: first, to turn away from Napoleon and towards the Allies, and secondly, to bring under his command the whole Appenine peninsula, at least as far as the Po, beyond which the Austrians were gaining a foothold.
But Bentinck now changed his tone; since the cause of the allies no longer seemed to be in need of the revolutionary king, he no longer wanted to have anything to do with Joachim. A diplomatic agent, Schinina, whom the king sent to Palermo in November, returned to his master in the second half of December not only without having achieved anything, but also laden with the imperious lord's rudeness. On the other hand, the Imperial and Royal General Count Adam Neipperg arrived in Naples from the great headquarters of the allies at the beginning of 1814 in order to conclude a defensive and protective alliance with the king. Neipperg did not enter into negotiations, he stated his conditions and demanded acceptance or rejection in the shortest possible time; Murat decided in favour of the former, because he could hardly do otherwise under the present circumstances, and on 11 January everything was signed. King Joachim wrote a letter to Emperor Franz in his own hand; Neipperg promised to obtain the entry of the other powers into the Austro-Neapolitan treaty.
A few days later, Joachim's troops moved across the Tronto and the Garigliano and occupied Ancona from one side, Rome from the other; the French generals Barbou there, Miollis here, withdrew into the citadels with their crews. The king left for the army on the 23rd and was on the south side of the Po by the beginning of February, from where he was now supposed to manoeuvre against the Viceroy shoulder to shoulder with the imperial field marshal Bellegarde, who was in Verona. But he was not entirely at ease. His French blood bristled at the idea of attacking his own compatriots and decades-long comrades-in-arms, sword in fist. Also, Emperor Francis' personal reply to his letter had not yet arrived, the treaty of 11 January had not yet been ratified, an accedence of the other powers, especially England, had not yet taken place. The Allies, on the other hand, first wanted to see proof of his sincere attitude, he was to show in the field that he was serious about taking up arms against France before they entered into a binding agreement with him.
In these critical times, his wife, who acted as regent in Naples during Joachim's absence, proved to be infinitely more determined than the king. As everyone must understand, it had cost her a hard struggle to break away from her imperial brother, to ally herself with his enemies and to turn the arms of her kingdom against France. But once the step had been taken, she remained true to her new role, because she realised that only undaunted, wholehearted devotion to the cause the banner of which had been seized could secure the lasting support of the allies for her house and throne. As much as she had previously been suspected of being partial to the French, she now showed herself to be on the opposite side. She seized for her kingdom the principalities of Benevento and Pontecorvo, which Napoleon had declared and treated as French imperial fiefs since the conquest of Naples by his guns; she ordered the seizure of all warships and merchant ships flying the French flag in Neapolitan ports; she expelled all French officers and agents from the borders of her country; she severed all communication between Naples and the Empire (February 1814).
Timeline: The Allies are already in France, Napoleon barely being able to hold them off (victory at Brienne followed by defeat at La Rothière, then a series of quick victories over Blücher who was always an ideal target ...). Caulaincourt is at the Congress of Chatillon, trying to adapt his negotiations to Napoleon’s orders (which change on a daily basis, depending on who won the last skirmish). In Upper Italy Eugène retreats to the Mincio, inflicting a defeat on Bellegarde’s Austrians on the 8th while doing so. February/March 1814 will also be the time when Napoleon and Eugène have their fallout over Eugène not leaving Italy with his troops and coming to Napoleon’s aid in France - and when distrust on both sides becomes so profound Eugène actually suspects Napoleon of wanting to take his pregnant wife hostage.

Juve miss Ronaldo’s ‘killer instinct’ in first league loss to Atalanta since 2001
Tumblr media
Milan (AFP) – Andrea Pirlo’s Juventus missed Cristiano Ronaldo’s “killer instinct” as the Italian champions fell to their first league defeat in two decades to Atalanta on Sunday.
Ruslan Malinovskyi struck late as Atalanta won 1-0 to move third in Serie A with the Portugal attacker injured.
Atalanta are two points behind second-placed AC Milan who beat Genoa 2-1 thanks to an own-goal to claim their first win at the San Siro in over two months.
Juventus were playing without injured Ronaldo, the top scorer in Serie A with 25 goals this campaign, in the match between the Champions League rivals in Bergamo.
“We knew it would be tough against Atalanta,” Juve coach Alessandro Pirlo.
“Ronaldo is our finisher, he adapts to these matches, because he’s a champion.
“He’s a penalty area killer. Today we had our chances, we didn’t use them and we were punished by an episode.”
Juve have failed to win any matches this season without 36-year-old Ronaldo with three draws and a loss.
Their nine-year reign as champions looks set to end, and they are now facing a battle for a Champions League place.
They sit fourth and risk being overtaken by fifth-placed Napoli who play leaders Inter Milan later on Sunday.
“It’s a game that counts,” said Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini whose side’s last Serie A win over the Turin giants was in February 2001.
“Winning today means we can beat Juve and they know they can also lose against us.
“I didn’t find a Juve in difficulty, they were a very strong team.”
In Ronaldo’s absence, Paulo Dybala got his first start in over three months after recovering from a knee injury.
But the Argentine was substituted in the 68th minute despite setting up Weston McKennie for a chance the American missed on 38 minutes and sending a free-kick wide after the hour mark.
Alvaro Morata missed two chances, the first cleared off the line in the 34th minute following a Federico Chiesa cross and the other saved by Pierluigi Gollini with 14 minutes remaining.
To add to Pirlo’s woes forward Chiesa limped off after an hour.
Top Atalanta striker Luis Muriel fired over the bar after an hour with Duvan Zapata heading wide after 70 minutes.
Malinovskyi came off the bench with quarter of an hour to go and proved decisive, breaking through with three minutes left with a shot which took a deflection off Alex Sandro.
– Milan end San Siro hoodoo –
In Milan, Gianluca Scamacca’s 68th-minute own goal put Milan eight points behind city rivals Inter and kept the seven-time European champions on course for a return to Champions League football next season.
Stefano Pioli’s side had not won their last six games in the San Siro in all competitions and were playing without suspended forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
“We wasted a lot, we could have finished it earlier, but the important thing is the spirit to stay in the game until the very end,” said Pioli, who has given up on catching Inter.
“Inter have taken too many points to think that we can still fight for the Scudetto (league title).
“Winning was important. We will have to face important teams, Atalanta, Juventus, Lazio, from here to the end they will all be difficult.”
Ante Rebic put Milan ahead in the 13th minute with Rafael Leao, taking the place of Ibrahimovic, missing a chance for a second minutes later.
A Mattia Destro header against his former club pulled 14th-placed Genoa level eight minutes before the break.
Mario Mandzukic came off the bench for his first appearance in over two months just after the hour and had a role in the winning goal, which Scamacca guided past his own goalkeeper from a Hakan Calhanoglu corner.
Genoa missed a double chance to pull level again with four minutes to go thanks to  Simon Kjaer and Fikayo Tomori’s goal-line clearance.
In Rome, Lazio beat Benevento 5-4 in a match between coaching brothers Simone and Filippo Inzaghi to stay in the chase for the Champions League.
Ciro Immobile scored twice for the hosts and also missed a penalty as sixth-placed Lazio are four points behind Juventus having played a game less.
