child of the old path wip
Tumblr media
“Deku!” shouts Kacchan. “Heard you’re running around with some old geezer now! What, was All Might no longer enough for ya?”
Torino’s thickly-gloved hand curls into a fist. Izuku registers a faint curl of disdain twisting the pro-hero’s mouth, which seals into a thin line; behind him, the Seventh sighs. She fails to ask Gran Torino for patience. So it falls to Izuku to placate Gran Torino with a quick, “Let me talk to them,” and he meets his class, step for step.

you ever go ‘man i bet everyone LOVED the dfohiko verse where toshinori and rikiya are fraternal twins and just loathe the name shigaraki’ and then think ‘well of course the next logical step is to see them growing up together’
(everyone go read @pocketramblr‘s fic about the shigaraki twins totally disowning their bloodline)

Apprentices:
Now that 1-A’s apprentices and the skills they’ve learned from them are solidified, how does the Sports Festival go?
Also, does Izuku have Full Cowling by then? Because I remember it being mentioned that All Might called in Torino, but I’m not sure it was ever stated when.
Hilariously I was planning on answering this in a reblog of your previous ask on this topic now that I'd established this, but your ask beat me to it.
It was not established when All Might called in Gran, but because of Thirteen mentoring Uraraka, it would've been something he thought to do soon. Though, given how early the USJ is, I think that happens first and inspires him to call Gran faster.
So in the two weeks between the USJ and the Sports Festival, Gran teaches Midoriya Full Cowling, and since there isn't a Noumu attack and Stain fight to end that mentorship early, Gran can take his time getting Midoriya better trained for combat as well. Midoriya's a quick learner, but it won't quite close that gap when most of the class has had more time to train.
Sports Festival:
For the event itself, Sato, Sero, Asui, Uraraka and Ashido would've done better at the actual race part, but Midoriya still wins with Full Cowling and the mine trick.
The Cavalry Battle is a 1-A sweep; it'll be much closer in their second year but right now 1-B can't keep up. And Shinsou's trick won't work on people who have better situational awareness and are tracking Quirk use.
Interestingly, I think that because Uraraka and Iida don't know Midoriya as well, their roles in this round reverse--Iida is on Midoriya's team while Uraraka isn't. Midoriya also picks up Hatsume and, to supplement her, Jiro. (Hatsume as Power Loader's apprentice? Perhaps?)
Uraraka's team is headed by Hagakure, who supports Aoyama and Tokoyami by directing light away from Dark Shadow, and they'd do well.
Uh, Tournament Speedrun.
Iida beats Jiro who lacks her gear, Aoyama beats Tokoyami, Kaminari beats Bakugou, Asui beats out Ojiro in a very tight match, Ashido would beat Midoriya thanks to her more viscous acids, Yaoyorozu beats Uraraka but it's close, Todoroki struggles with Hagakure but she lacks the experience to avoid being overwhelmed, and Hatsume outmaneuvers Shoji.
Aoyama's lasers are faster than Iida, Asui isn't faster than Kaminari's electric whips, Ashido is too fast for Yaoyorozu to think of a plan, and Todoroki beats Hatsume.
Aoyama's attacks are faster than Kaminari's electricity. Ashido's acid is very effective against Todoroki's ice and he won't use his fire.
So, uh, strange final match of Ashido vs Aoyama. As a brawler, Ashido has a better chance at withstanding Aoyama's attacks than his largely ranged opponents up until now, so I think she takes it.
What a weird fucking tournament.
Oh, don't worry that Hatsume did better than Midoriya; her first matchup was very favorable to her while Midoriya's was not so he's not in any trouble. His mental health on the other hand might take another hit from losing in the first round. Sure he's a finalist but when did facts matter to the brain?

Seeing people say toshi is the exact same as gran torino..... hnnn aaaAAHHHHHH hori when i catch you!! He was supposed to be better than gran and want shigaraki saved, why would he write him saying that ..
What makes this one particularly infuriating is like, Toshi’s entire arc is about struggling with his own suicidal ideation and finding the will to live outside of his hero persona. He reconciles his fractured identity with the help of a villain (Stain, who was also explicitly suicidal and wanted Toshi to kill him)— and he’s also depicted as being extremely distraught when Stain died right in front of him! All of that, just to have him parrot the “killing can still be a way of saving” rhetoric in the end?? Saying “if you didn’t see the crying boy anymore, then you truly saved him” about another character who was pretty explicitly suicidal/felt he had no future or identity outside of being a villain? And to add insult to injury, not having any meaningful reaction to the fact that Nana’s last remaining relative died miserably after both he and Gran Torino utterly failed him on practically every level? Like, narrative-wise, too— Toshinori gets a beautiful personal arc about fully accepting his identity as “Yagi Toshinori” and that acceptance is explicitly framed as something that “saves his soul/returns the light to his eyes”….. while Tenko dies still calling himself “Shigaraki Tomura.” And yet the readers are supposed to blindly accept that Tenko’s heart was truly saved in the end. Lol. Lmao even.
Like…. Toshi’s reaction to Stain’s death vs. Tenko’s death is like night and day. Horikoshi, this is the same man whose “purest essence” burst into tears when Izuku talked about using OFA to save Tenko back in 305. Like, I get that it would also be ooc for Toshi to go “nah kid you totally blew this one” to Izuku, but like…. This chapter has Toshi give Izuku some half hearted comfort and then immediately starts gassing him and Bakugo up as “the greatest heroes.” It’s completely tone deaf. Iron Might wasn’t character assassination, but *this* chapter was. Like, getting right down to it, we don’t actually explore Toshi’s feelings about Tenko’s death and how this relates to him + his feelings of failing both Tenko and Nana— instead, Toshi just feels like he’s being used as a prop for Izuku’s benefit instead of being treated as his own character.
I still like Toshi and his arc about “struggling with mental health/suicidal ideation and learning to want to live on as himself” is still very important to me. But these chapters have more or less twisted everyone into shallow ooc husks of themselves, and it sincerely feels like all the emotion/nuance has been sucked right out of the series. 😭

This is MHA though.
AKA, the series of constant fakeouts. So I'm going to go on record and say that these recent manga events are done for shock value and will be reversed. If Tomura actually stays dead and Izuku ends the series quirkless and armless, I'll happily look like a clown.
I just find it impossible to believe that the same series that let Gran Torino survive a fist through his torso would kill the main villain and also permanently maim the protagonist. No. The general lack of lasting consequences in MHA doesn't vibe with this. Because Izuku failing to save Tomura makes him the biggest loser in Shonen history. This would be like if Sasuke got killed by Madara and stayed dead, and Naruto ended the series in a wheel chair after barely surviving having Kurama ripped from him. In a shonen, when you pledge to do something, it has to come to fruition. Especially if it's an end of series goal. So that's why I genuinely believe this'll be undone.
Because the alternative is a worse ending than any other shonen in recent history. Shoto can succeed at saving Dabi. Uraraka can succeed at saving Toga (I don't believe MHA would kill Toga, again, because of a lasting lack of consequences in this series) but Deku fails. Completely and utterly. Imagine if they just kill AFO while he's using Shigaraki's body. What makes this even worse is the fridge logic of a world where they simply wanted to kill the villains. If Izuku hadn't gotten yanked away from the fight by Toga. If everyone went for the kill from the start. We have a "better" outcome in that fewer people got hurt or injured. Is that the message? That we should just kill our enemies, and that the product of a flawed society and failed social safety nets should be taken out back and shot like a rabid dog?
That's also an ending where they'd learn absolutely nothing and would ensure this probably happens again 20 years from now, except worse given the number of singularity quirks that will be running around. On a side note, you wanna know a practical reason for why they shouldn't ever kill Tomura? Because if he can be convinced to stop, he could go around and harvest dangerous quirks from people in the future, and thus save everyone. The quirk singularity isn't that big of a deal when we have someone who already has a singularity body and also can give and take quirks. He becomes a repository of all the powers that would destroy humanity in the future. Tomura is a very neat and tidy solution to a problem the heroes haven't put any effort into understanding or solving. It's an issue that we have definitive proof is a thing, and Deku can't punch it out. For utilitarian reasons, Tomura must live. What's a few of the hundred lives he's taken vs the entire world? They legit don't have any other answer.
Maybe. But even if it is for shock value and they undo everything, that's worse than it happening in the first place for me. Because then it was for nothing. I'd rather Horikoshi make a decision and stick to it, not just in this case but in general. Even if Izuku being armless and Tomura being dead is the last thing I want, him reversing it and putting them through that for nothing feels even worse.
(Also, this is Izuku and Tomura we're talking about. Horikoshi hates them I can definitely see him giving them a bad ending)
And no one in MHA- especially the so called geniuses- is smart enough to actually use him as a solution. Haven't they already decided it's better for him to die? Even if Izuku does manage to save him, he'll get locked away immediately.
It's a lose-lose situation
