Hitchcock nightmares selfie
Watching the hundreds of Burung Merpati (Domestic Pigeons / Columba livia forma domestica / مرڤاتی) at the parking lot of the Batu Caves temple complex (ڬوا باتو / பத்து மலை / Pathu malai) in the Gombak District of the Selangor State of Malaysia.
The buring merpati were bred from an endemic species that are found all over the Indomalaya ecozone. The buring merpati may not seem to affect the biodiversity of the Batu Caves, as they have become too reliant on the human visitors for their food sources. The name merpati is derived from the Sanskrit word for pigeon: pārāpata (पारापत ).
The Baba Bahasa term for pigeon is “Kumba” (كومبا‎), whereas the word Burung (بوروڠ) in Bahasa Melayu means “bird.”
This picture was taken circa 2024, during a medical visit to Malaysia to address my stroke.

Hindu cave selfie
After climbing the 272 steps, I am taking a breath under the cave opening at the Batu Caves temple complex (பத்து மலை / Pathu malai) in the Gombak District of the Selangor State of Malaysia. Behind me is the arch entrance to the Sri Valli Deivanai Murugan, which is dedicated to Vaḷḷi (வள்ளி) and Devasenā (தேவசேனா) the wives of Murugan (முருகன்) the deity whom the temple whole temple is devoted to.
Before its “discovery” in the 1860s, the caves of the region were used as shelters by the indigenous Orang Temuan people. Later on, Tn̂g-lâng (唐儂) Chinese settlers would scour the caves for bat guano (kelawarkotoran) to be used as fertilizer. In 1878, the American zoologist William Temple Hornaday (1854-1937) explored the caves to document its wildlife.
By 1890, the Tamil K. Thamboosamy Pillai (1850-1902) began the development of a temple dedicated to Hindu god of war Murugan (முருகன்).  Murugan is the Tamil version of the god Kārtikeya (कार्त्तिकेय)), who is the son of Śiva (Shiva / शिव) and Pārvatī (पार्वती), and brother to Gaṇeśa (गणेश).
Since Pillai was a worshiper of the Tamil goddess Māriamman (மாரியம்மன்), an incarnation of the goddess Pārvatī (पार्वती), it could be surmised that Pillai would extend his patronage to the god Murugan. In fact, Pillai had earlier constructed Śrī Māriyammaṉ Kōvil temple in Kōlā Lampūr (کوالا لومڤور / கோலாலம்பூர் / Kuala Lumpur) in 1873.
Over the years more temples have been added to the complex.
The Tamil settlers also call the area Pathu malai (Ten Hills / பத்து மலை).
