Weimar besitzt eine einzigartige Sammlung zur Vorgeschichte, der Geschichte und Nachwirkung des Staatlichen Bauhauses, das hier 1919 gegründet wurde. 1995 konnte ein provisorisches Bauhaus-Museum in dem von Clemens Wenzeslaus Coudray errichteten Gebäude am Theaterplatz eingerichtet werden.

Der Wettbewerb dient dazu, für das neue Bauhaus-Museum und für das städtebauliche Entwicklungspotential des Standorts die beste Lösung zu erhalten. Der Neubau des Bauhaus-Museums Weimar ist Teil des Masterplans ›Kosmos Weimar‹ der Klassik Stiftung Weimar.

“Der Entwurf … schafft einen gelungenen Zugang zum Park. Die markante Museumsgestalt wirkt stärker in den Stadtraum und wird durch die geschickte Staffelung lang gestreckter Baukörper bestimmt. Mehr noch lebt der Entwurf von den Qualitäten des Innenraums. Der zentrale Innenraum bildet ein differenziertes, eigenständiges und attraktives Angebot für das Neue Bauhaus-Museum.”

Beim VOF-Verfahren erhielten die Drittplatzierten des Wettbewerbs Frau Prof. Heike Hanada und Prof. Benedict Tonon den Zuschlag zur Ausführung ihres Entwurfs.

Untitled Wednesday Library Series, Part 2

Today’s offering: Anni Albers’ On Weaving, (new expanded edition), published in 2017 by Princeton University Press. The first version of the full text appeared in 1965, but parts date to as early as 1937.

The How

I first heard Albers’ name in 2016 at the Bauhausmuseum in Weimar. Their public collection had a few of her diagrams, but was much heavier on the Gropius, Kandinsky (one of whose books I have and should eventually show), and Klee stuff. I definitely didn’t remember her very distinctly.

A few years later one of my German professors — brace yourselves — brought up the Bauhaus again. I poked around Wikipedia and landed on Anni Albers’ biography. You should do the same; she had a hell of a life. I was just taking an interest in textiles at the time; I think I first learned to crochet within a month of rediscovering her. In any case I wanted some reading material, saw this in some list of her works, and ordered it online. Riveting, I know.

The Text

On Weaving is a creature of editing. It comprises both preexisting pieces and some written specifically for the book. The first chapter Albers wrote for the Encyclopedia Brittanica; some sections derive from her lectures/writing at the Bauhaus; a few were written later in her life and handle the philosophy of design more generally (albeit through the lens of textile construction).

This edition, updated by the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, benefits from some supplementary essays, but her original statement on its purpose holds. I’ll drop that and the table of contents below for brevity.

The Object

Perfect size and aspect ratio. Excellent font selection; pretty margins. Stunning photographs and printing. Cloth cover.

It looks like how a museum wall makes you feel.

The Why, Though?

Three reasons, each more noble than the last.

First, the constituent essays and photos are basically impossible to find online. I wanted to read them myself, and I especially wanted to have them for (1) one professor in particular, (2) some friends in particular, and (3) everybody in general. If anything in the table of contents jumps out at you, let me know and I can provide scans. These things are for sharing.

Second, Albers’ writings on design scratch my Bauhaus itch like nothing else. This book dovetails perfectly with her Selected Writings on Design, and further with some fragmentary stuff I’ve read elsewhere. Completionism masquerading as casual scholarship.

Third, I want it. It’s pretty; I like pretty things. It’s about textiles; I like a good textile. It feels good. Makes me happy, etc. Indulgence in book buying is pretty high on my list, I think you’ll find.
