The official 'OP has read 500 Merlin fics in a month' rec list

I am truly deep in Merthur hell and have recently hit around ~500 fics read for this fandom so far. As such, I wanted to compile my favorite Merthur fics so far.

Summary: Job-hunting has familiarized Merlin with rejection. Most of the listings in the paper require qualifications he lacks, or prior job experience no eighteen year old would have. One listing sticks out at Merlin—a simple advert, with the word ‘Secretary’ written in bold typeface. (A Secretary Movie/BBC Merlin AU in which a fragile Merlin learns to love his job, himself, getting spanked, and his boss. All in that order.)

one of the first fics i read in this fandom and!!!! it's such a good secretary au (which is always a classic for any kink readers)

Summary: Merlin swears he doesn’t go looking for trouble, but it seems to follow him around regardless. After being ambushed by a group of bandits, it’s up to Arthur and Merlin to rescue the rest of the knights. Of course this involves journeying through a forest full of magical creatures- because nothing in Merlin’s life is ever easy. That would be more than enough for Merlin to deal with, but nights alone in the wilderness and escaping death every five minutes, have a funny way of bringing two people together. Merlin doesn’t want to reveal his true feelings to Arthur, but then he never wanted to reveal his magic to anyone, either. And look how that turned out. It's a lot easier to manage Merlin's secrets between them when they're surrounded by nothing but trees. But Arthur and Merlin will have to return to Camelot eventually. Merlin's destiny might just be closer than he thinks.

and finally, the first fic in a decade that kept me up until 2am to read. this fic made me fall in love with fics again.

𝐓𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟗𝐭𝐡 𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝟏𝟗𝟕𝟓. Tony Venner took out an advertisement in The Stage following his tour of South Africa supporting Lena.

𝐒𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟗𝐭𝐡 𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝟏𝟗𝟕𝟕. The Sunday Mirror had “You’re Never To Old” as it’s pick of the day for Wednesday 1st June.

𝐓𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟗𝐭𝐡 𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝟏𝟗𝟖𝟎. The Stage reported on plans to increase audience numbers at The Pavilion theatre, Glasgow, with Billy Connolly (The Big Yin), and Lena (The Wee Yin) already booked, probably because they were both guaranteed to fill a Scottish theatre.

𝐓𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟗𝐭𝐡 𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝟏𝟗𝟖𝟎. Lena sang “Jump Down Jimmy” on Top Of The Pops, BBC 1 7.25 pm. In “Feeling Like A Number One” by Steve Binnie, the song got a lousy review.

This show was a "Last" to counteract Lena's many firsts;

It was the Last Top Of The Pops for two months because of a musician's strike;

She was the last artiste to be accompanied by the Top Of The Pops Orchestra before they were sacked.

The audience was the last to just stand around and watch the acts, in future they had to join in and be happy, animated and dressed to impress.

Captain Arthur Pendragon has put together the best team of specialists that the SAS has ever seen, but when his superiors assign Lieutenant Merlin Emrys as his communications officer, Arthur does everything to make him feel unwelcome. Arthur's job is to protect and guide his team through dangerous missions, and he worries that he can't do that when the newest member has a mysterious background and acts suspicious when he thinks no one is looking.

Fleeing from Essetir in the bloody beginnings of the Purge, Hunith finds herself on the doorstep of old friends. That's all it takes to untangle the skeins of destiny and weave a new tapestry.

A fast ship, a good crew, a treasure, a Clan to lead -- that's all Arthur Pendragon has ever wanted. 4. Unstoppable Superweapons by Footloose [E, 147k]  

Merlin is a recent graduate with a double doctorate in metaphysics and physics. Arthur is a low-level paper pusher with a desk in the sub-basement of MI5. They live in a world with ridiculous laws and restrictions against anyone who might be supernatural in any way, shape, or design. Merlin has huge debts looming over this head, a few quid left in his bank account, and no job prospects. Arthur is pushing thirty, in a dead-end job with no chances of promotion to fieldwork agent, and is thoroughly bored with his life. One ill-advised Craigslist advert, five pushy mates, one nosy all-knowing sister, and a hacked email account later, Merlin and Arthur take the world by storm. (Or, more precisely, they take over the world.)

5. The Dragon Rises by Footloose [M, 123k] 

Merlin has three strikes against him: he's one of the last surviving members of the grove of Ironwood, he's renowned as the dread sorcerer Emrys, and there's a large reward hanging over his head like Damocles' sword. After decades of running, there's nowhere left to go. His dream of peace -- Ironwood's dream -- seems impossible to achieve until he meets the young son of a thane whose greatest secret is a traitorous desire for more than the tyranny that runs rampant throughout the Kingdoms of Albion.It was disaster that brought the world to this. It's war that will cleanse it of its sins. But it is prophecy that heralds the day when the guardian of the realm can wear his mantle once again, and when the King of Kings will rise to take the throne that is rightly his.

After spending the better part of a thousand years as a professor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Merlin had given up hope that he would ever see Arthur again. Then Christmas 1993 happened and Sybil Trelawney wheezed out a prophecy about the return of the Once and Future King.

As he approaches adulthood, he decides that it's time for him to break free of the leash and to take his rightful place on the throne.There are agents of Heaven and Hell who would stop him. His own half-sister desires the power for herself. His human father refuses to allow Arthur out of his control. The Fallen sperm donor responsible for Arthur's existence wants to take his place.Arthur's young. His power has yet to mature. All the allies he has made and the loyal men who follow him won't be enough to protect him until he can build the Kingdom he has dreamed of since he was a child.He needs the help of the person who makes angels and demons quaver in fear at the mere mention of his name. Of the broken, down-trodden man who is now a pale shade of the terror he had been decades ago. He needs Merlin, and Arthur has every intention of making Merlin his.

10. Ashes, Embers, Flames by unpossible [E, 65k] 

Merlin sees him across a crowded living room and promptly spills his beer down the back of the couch and over some hapless stranger’s neck.

11. Good News (is on the way) by derryere  [E, 60k]

Arthur, a travelling businessman, decides to rent a room with the Wyllt family while in town. Hunith is charmed. Her son, Merlin, is not.

12. Something Unpredictable by alby_mangroves [E, 38k] 

Arthur’s treehouse was the same as Merlin remembered it, all of it was. Maybe a little smaller, but then everything was, now. And then there was Arthur himself; and it wasn't so much that a lot had changed about him, not really, it was only that everything had lengthened and broadened and become more.

Arthur doesn't care much about the popular radio program Dragon's Lonely Hearts until his ex-girlfriend calls in to slag him off and get advice. When he calls in and has an on-air argument with the host, it starts off more than he expected, including meddling friends, overinvolved fans, and maybe love.

Arthur and Merlin drift apart and break up, but sometimes the end isn’t always a forever kind of thing.

I'm kinda new to tumblr but since being here I've noticed a lot of love for British TV shows, especially BBC drama

The main ones I've seen mentioned are Sherlock, Merlin and Doctor Who and although those are great shows I wondered if there might be some others that non-natives (idk if that's the right phrase I'm tired) might not have heard about or had the opportunity to discover so here you go

List will be staggered because there's too much for one post so here's part 1

Dancing on the Edge (BBC, 2013)

I'd recommend for Merlin fans, because Angel Coulby and Anthony Head, and from what I remember Tom Hughes as Julian was quite Merlin-like or at least in a similar vein

It did have a crime/mystery element to it too so if you liked that about Sherlock give this a go

Anyway he was adorable

I watched it when it first came out because Angel Coulby and was disappointed with how much she is actually in it (forewarning- not much at all) but I enjoyed the story and the characters and the sets/costumes were great and now that I think about it I'm still kinda attatched to Julian what how did this happen it's been 7 years send help-

Chiwetel Ejiofor is very cool of course as Louis and his performance is generally great, as much as I love the more side characters like Julian, Carla and Stanley he really is what centres everything and makes it work I think

Also Carla bb you are amazing please stop doubting yourself ok someone hug her (and while you're at it give Wunmi Mosaku more roles why are you sleeping on her)

I remember the music being good too and there was one bit where they played in a bar (it's about Jazz btw) and it was really cool, can't remember why but will need to rewatch soon I think

I completely forgot Jenna Coleman was in this but I'm sure she was good so yeah there's that

Bonus: Matthew Goode (probably your new crush if you have a thing for British drama guys who look vaguely like Tom Hiddleston as quite a few people here seem to)

Atlantis (BBC, 2013)

Another 2013 drama but this one less of an intelligent serious historical drama vibe and more a magic, sword fighting and running around the woods in ineffective armour from weird CGI creatures vibe.

If that sounds like Merlin to you, well it did to us too when it first came out so everyone was kinda salty especially since it was the first 'big' drama to fill Merlin's primetime family spot which basically signalled it as a Merlin replacement trying to appeal to the same audience by doing a very similar thing but not as well

Like when the adverts came out people were like how dare you try to fill the Merlin-shaped hole in the schedule and also in my heart with this

Bring back Colin and Bradley you cowards

That said it wasn't a bad series at all, not amazing but mostly good, just not on the same level character and story wise as Merlin, in my opinion anyway

I mean I still watched every episode and was upset when it ended but c'mon it was just getting good

There are a couple of episodes I rewatch sort of regularly because they were pretty cool

If you liked Merlin I would recommend giving it a go, it has a kind of similar feel, magic, fun costumes and of course a lot of bromance. You don't have to think a lot when watching it (at least not until near the end I'm pretty sure) which can be nice when you just want to switch off and watch people run around in totally inappropriate sandals

Honestly it was good but I would have loved more focus on other characters, I didn't like Jason as much as I did Medusa or Medea (spinoff series please BBC they both deserved better)

Highlights:

Pythagoras. Just him. Doing Pythagoras stuff. Also won't spoil but his (slightly rushed) eventual romance was sweet and quite unusual at the time on a show like that (on BBC one at prime family viewing time) and I need to know more about that because we spent too much on Jason angst and not enough time on this small boi getting the love he deserves so if we could get some new fans in to do fanart or something that would be great I need closure

Ariadne's costumes, sass and eyebrows:

The force is strong with this one

I'm sure she was a great character but looking back I mainly remember her blue dresses and strong brows they just owned the scenes ok they should have been credited in the cast list

For real tho I hadn't seen Aiysha Hart in anything before but she was a strong lead

Amy Manson's Medea:

Seriously when she joined in season 2 things really kicked up a notch, hard to describe it but you'll see

I would watch a whole series about her

She's amazing

I only want good things for Medea

And Amy Manson

Medusa (played by Jemima Rooper) was also amazing and lovely and I found it quite a touching and different take on her story (to past me anyway). Again, I would have liked more focus and development on that instead of Jason's eughhh it's so hard to be a protagonist wait lemme punch a Minotaur in the face real quick but we can't have everything
