ohkayyyyyy so the thing I've thinking about this list.....

a white guy records something that's fucking weird, and the critics and anthologists call him a genius and an influence. and women and people of color write and record something beautiful and true and the work is treated like it's been done and heard before because it isn't as "groundbreaking".......but what is the ground that's being broken?

1950-1970′s - Showa style

After wwii, a new era began for kimono, trying to recover from harships of wartime. Prototype of modern Seijin no hi was held for the first time in 1946. The economic miracle made possible for ordinary households to own or at least rent furisode outfits, which were in the past mostly only affordable for wealthy families.

Style favored bold embroidery with gold foil etc, and vivid oranges and emerald greens were very popular colors.

New methods and rules for kitsuke/dressing appeared as many people didn’t have the knowledge/means to dress in traditional furisode attire as before: => Expensive and heavy maru obi fell out of fashion, and fukuro obi became the norm (only patterned on one side, they are cheaper and easier to produce).  => Costly and cumbersome layered kimono called kasane also disappeared, replaced by decorative collar called date eri mimicing layers.

1980-1990′s - Bubble style

The economic bubble from that decade saw a big demand for consumer products. Same went for kimono items.

Demand for embroidery and gold foil decreased, but glossy rinzu (raised ground patterned fabric) was super popular. Small scattered patterns were a staple of the period.

Fukuro obi also became longer, making elaborated novelty belt knots possible (before that era, bunko, or fukura suzume for example were the norm).  

1990-2000′s - Antique kimono boom

When the economic bubble finally burst, the amount of money spent for Seijin no hi furisode dramatically decreased.

Little by little, antique kimono became fashionable. One reason, beside obvious cost, might have been the huge popularity of Akina Nakamori's music video [DESIRE - Jônetsu]. In any case, antique/vintage kimono shops opened everywhere.

That decade liked deep, crisp ground colors. Because of the second hand popularity, patterns were often old fashioned, antique ones.

Ready to wear kimono -sometimes designed by Stars of the era- started to become available, with often the promised of being easily washable - something difficult to do with silk kimono.

2000-2010′s - In your face! Ageha’s kimono

In reaction against to “old fashion” feeling of the past decade, style became more youthful and extravagant.

Gyaru magazine [Koakuma Ageha] made the hight ponytail fashionable, and that hairdo became a staple of that style, often embelished with large floral ornaments.

Contrasting colors like white, black, and purple were very popular. More is more was everywhere, with use of glitters, rhinestones, lace, frills, fur, pearls...

The “oiran” style also saw a trend, with furisode worn sexily off shoulder with obi belt knotted up front.

2010′s-2020′s - Between classic and modern

Furisode crazed fashion trends of the past decade became a bit more quiet, and offer diversified.

“Retro modern” furisode appeared, mixing reinterpreted traditional motifs and graphic/geometrical patterns. Colors tended to be really “pop”, not afraid to mix turquoise and bright pink for example. 

On the other side of the spectrum, pastel colors were also in high demand.

Hairstyles returned to more classic buns, with notable fact that braids popularity rose.

2020′s~ - Chic and Romantic

Reiwa era is still pretty young, but new trends are emerging nonetheless.

Light, natural colors are fashionable atm, such as light greys or beiges.

Busy patterns are also losing ground, as quiet, or even plain mujifurisode are becoming easier and easier to find.

Cute frilly accessories make a return, with lace, pearl, etc. It can be as headress, or for undershirt, or even gloves.

Western shoes are more and more considered acceptable.

Hairstyle are light and romantic, with loose buns sometimes decorated with dried flowers for example.

It’s been 20 years since the first Men In Black film hit theaters and every sci-fi comedy made since owes it a debt of gratitude. The trilogy hit a rough spot with the 2002 sequel, but the original film remains a classic, and Men In Black III marked a fine return to form. Well worth taking the plunge and getting them all.

As a pure display piece, this model of Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, might be worth it. 11. Sphero R2-D2 App-Controlled Droid

Shockingly well-made. That’s the most succinct review we could offer here. Standing six-inches tall and perfectly resembling the detail and proportion of the famous R2 unit who appears in every Star Wars film, this app-controlled droid can mimic every sound and movement you know so well (Episode II’s jet thrusters notwithstanding). This is all easily controlled through the app, which you can download for free from the Apple or Google Play store. The app gives you control not only over all the aforementioned special effects, but offers patrol mode, AR mode, and watch mode, where R2 will chime in appropriately if you happen to be watching Episodes IV, VII, or Rogue One (functionality for the other films in the saga is on the way). When at rest, R2 stands on two legs. When you connect to the app, his retractable front center tread descends and he leans back, ready to roll. Be sure to give him some space, too, because he can roll pretty fast. It should be noted, too, that this droid is big step up from Sphero’s BB-8 droid, released in advance of The Force Awakens in 2015. While the BB-8 droid was similarly authentic and worked well, the sphere robotics were a little more complex and a little less practical. It wasn’t unusual, for instance, for BB-8 to get stuck in the corner and for his magnetic head to pop off. This R2 unit is twice the size and twice as stable when roaming around your home or office.

12. 'Samurai Jack': The Complete Series

Thirteen years passed from the end of Season 4 in 2004 to the climactic Season 5 in 2017. That’s a hell of a long wait, but the story of Jack, a samurai thrown into the future, at last has a proper ending. Luckily, Adult Swim isn’t making you wait to collect everything. This box set features all five seasons of Samurai Jack on Blu-ray and digital; that’s 62 episodes spanning almost 23 hours. Since the first four seasons predated the HD era, they’ve been remastered for this set. Happy watching.

13. 'Spider-Man' 4K Box Sets

The original Sam Raimi/Tobey Maguire Spider-Man trilogy helped build the foundations of the modern superhero genre, with the second film in the series still standing as one of the best superhero films ever made. Sony has updated all three films in 4K and placed them inside this limited-edition collection, which includes regular Blu-ray versions of each film, plus a bonus disc of features that includes the Editor’s Cut of Spider-Man 3. Sony gave the same attention to Andrew Garfield’s two-film run as the title character in Amazing Spider-Man 1 & 2.
