10 Things That Never Happened Review
10 Things That Never Happened by Alexis Hall
CW: Swearing, Injury, Blood, Dysfunctional Family, Loss of Family, Toxic Work Environment, Mentioned Homophobia, Toxic Relationship, Medical Content, Classism
4/5
This is the story of how I got tricked into reading a Christmas romance. Spotify, despite me never having read a book on there, knew my tastes exactly. Its algorithm showed me Alexis Hall's latest book, 10 Things That Never Happened. Seeing its cover, I immediately assumed it was the 3rd book in the Boyfriend Material series, also by Hall. Inspecting it closer, I realized it wasn't, but I trust Hall to be a good author, so I decided to read it anyhow. The provided blurb indicated that a lot was going on in the novel, messy characters and a good story. Nowhere in the blurb or the design of the cover, did it mention that it was a Christmas romance! Of course, I loved the book, but I wouldn't intentionally read a Christmas romance without a very good reason.
In 10 Things That Never Happened, Sam Becker is the manager at a bed-and-bath retailer that's a part of a chain owned by Jonathan Forest. He's a caring pushover while Jonathan is no-nonsense. Jonathan decides that Sam's branch is over budget and needs to cut some employees. Jonathan invites Sam down to London for a chat, but accidentally causes him to get into an accident. Sam, waking up in the hospital with a concussion, takes the opportunity to fake amnesia and buy his branch some time. Due to doctor's orders, Sam ends up staying with Jonathan for the Christmas season. Will the close quarters make the pair start seeing each other in a different way? Will Sam's scheme work?
I can't actually say with certainty that I like the couple of Sam and Jonathan, but I loved reading 10 Things That Never Happened anyhow. When I read the blurb, I was upset that Sam would do such a thing to Jonathan. Then, when I met Jonathan in the book, I thought he absolutely deserved it. I'm glad that Sam is the only POV character in this book, as I was rooting for him the whole time. I just wanted good things to happen to him. I did get excited when they kissed, but I have no idea if this couple will work in the long run. There's an element of Stockholm Syndrome, which is brought up by characters in the story, but Sam's life is made a lot brighter by the extended Forest Family. Overall, it's not the romance that makes this book great, it's Sam and his amnesia scheme.
Admittedly, Hall doesn't spend all that much time on diversity in 10 Things That Never Happened, not in any meaningful way. They do explore what it was like for Sam and Jonathan growing up being gay, though. Jonathan grew up in Sheffield, Sam in Liverpool. I don't wish to give spoilers, but they had different experiences from each other. It's important to be reminded that everyone had a different experience growing up. Determined by class, location, time, and more. If you choose to read the book, Jonathan's dad is the biggest example of this. I learned a lot when his backstory was revealed.
As previously mentioned, I essentially read this book because it's by Alexis Hall. While I haven't read all of their books yet, I am certainly drawn to all of them. There are several things that keep me coming back to this author. One is that the first review I put on this blog was one of their books, the previously linked Boyfriend Material. Another is that this is a queer author writing queer books, but that could be said of a lot of my repeat authors. Ultimately it's the use of tropes and the writing style. Main characters for Hall tend to be messy British queers that don't have their life together but are loveable. My favorite tropes of enemies-to-lovers and fake dating can be found in some of the books, and there are plenty of other tropes to get me excited. Hall's humor is potentially the biggest reason I keep coming back. I know I'm going to have a good laugh when I'm reading anything they've written.
Unless you can't handle the chance that you might not ship the love interests, I absolutely recommend 10 Things That Never Happened by Alexis Hall! The story is quite enjoyable and takes the reader all over England during wintertime! The book is filled with delightful side characters, commentary about capitalism in the UK, and silly moments that Sam and Jonathan bond over. Christmas may be over, but spoken as someone who doesn't celebrate anyway, it's not too late to enjoy this read!

Bit last night by b-[bugs] yet slept well goodish motion after none yesterday obliged to mend my black petticoat a little - Down stairs to breakfast at 10 - breakfast in about ½ hour till 10 ¾ from about 10 ¾ to 1 ¾ wrote out the journal of yesterday - from 1 ¾ to 2 35/60 wrote out itinerary of yesterday and settled my accounts - great deal of rain fell during last night and early this morning - perpetual showers all the day - very heavy showers from 2 20/60 for ¼ hour - cleaned my [tables] went out at 3 ¼ - to the cathedral, close here - in castle street - afternoon service just began - never heard anyone read in so hurried and careless a manner and so ill as the senior minor-canon - only ½ the service chaunted - the minor-canons cannot chaunt the 4th and 5th verse of the 4th or 5th psalm sung as an anthem - very short - good organ - built 14 or 15 years ago - 1 of the boys has a good voice the service over at 4 40/60 -
Saw the cathedral - of the abbey and cloisters merely a few arches and bits of walls remaining walled up in the gardens or into the houses of the prebendaries along the other side of the cathedral - the ground here raised several feet - this part still called the abbey - entered by a castle like private gate opening into abbey street and shut by the deans and prebendaries at night - a prebend worth about £500 a year and deanery worth about £1000 a year - the deanery house an old battlemented goodish house but archdeacon Paley’s an old small indifferent house the brick addition built by him having a front of a door and 5 windows must have been necessary -
The choir of the cathedral built by Mr Rufus, perfect and handsome - its side-aisles quite plain - no old monuments - merely a few plain neat modern ones - 1 ditto for archdeacon Paley put up by his 2nd son - none during the lifetime of his eldest son nor even any inscription on the gravestone till it was done by a sister of the archdeacon’s from Yorkshire - the transept shabby - the south end paving given way a little on both sides on account of the weight of the great tower put on over the centre - great bare wall where the entrance to the nave should be, reminding one of the ruined Scotch churches in fact the nave (built before the conquest) all but 2 arches on each side, was destroyed by Cromwell, who built 3 grand houses in the town of the materials - 1 in the middle of the town (still standing) and 1 at each gate - the 2 gates and guard houses all swept away - these small part of the nave now serves as a parish church very large thick, round columns (something like those at Gloucester) 2 with very little wrought capitals and 2 with capitals not wrought at all saxon arches quite rude unornamented in any way -
Henry 1 erected this into a bishops seat - the old part of the nave, built of white imperishable stone - all the rest of red sandstone and worn away like that Chester Cathedral - the clerk who shewed me round remembered Archdeacon P-[aley]’s 1st wife Miss Hewitt, and her mother who was then with another person the only one in Carlisle who sold spirits by retail - Mrs P-[aley]’s sister married Mr Hudson (he called him) (Hodgson father of Miss H-[udson] I have met at Lightcliffe) a manufacturer of Dolstone (4 or 5 miles from here near the bishops palace) who was the 1st who introduced the cotton business here and would have done well but laid out too much money in building and was besides taken by a banker here who ruined himself and he died of a broken heart leaving very little behind him - Miss Grisdale now at Lowther castle - always goes while the family comes down - her father Dr G-[risdale] of the free grammar school - her father an inn keeper at Maryfort - he once expected to have been bishop of Carlisle thro’ the Lousdale interest - left his 3 daughters very little - 2 of them comfortably married and Lord Lousdale does not forget Miss G-[risdale] Dr G-[risdal] every warm in politics for the Lowthers - when Broughan was thrown out for Westmoreland, it was in fact a struggle between the Thanet and Lowther interest - the clerk not having the keys of the chapter house did not see it, as he said it was merely a large plain room, gothic roof, but lately done up - he shewed me Miss G-[risdale]’s small house (shut up) as we walked down castle street then pointed to the castle an left me -
Went to the castle - large pile of building - 3 great towers - a very large area walled in it within it modern erections for barracks and all the old buildings turned into barracks, armory, and storerooms - 4 companies of the 80th foot there and 8 artillerymen from the headquarters at Neurcastle - Col. Ross of the artillery commands the garrison - find view from the flagstaff tower - it was in this tower that Queen Mary was - stood a little while for the view over the town and country - too thick to see very far into the country - look on to the smooth race course and close to it the fine white stone 5 arch-bridge we passed last night over the Eden - 4 or 5 made up small arches and 1 open arch raise the road over the low ground as far as to the town - then walked all round under the castle wall and went and stood up the 3 arched red sandstone bridge (Caldew Bridge) over the rapid Caldew -
Then turned up and walked all round the sort of rampart wall round the outside of the town to the new jail - 1 of the turn keys shewed me over it - made no notes, for he wrongly told me these were the plans and an account of it published - Nixon, and Barber was it? architects - cost £50,000 - just finished - magnificent building - off red sandstone - very high wall encloses the whole - [HF] ½ round the foot of the wall (within) nice kitchen garden - calls for fellows male and female - ditto for debtors - ditto ditto for house of correction prison - hospital rooms - water closet to each ward - 2 condemned cells for men and 2 ditto for women and water closets belonging to them - hospital kitchen - general kitchen - laundry - wash house - work shops and every possible place that can be useful - goaler’s house in the middle - hexagon? the ground floor 26 smallish rooms - 2nd floor chapel and 22 rooms - the 3rd floor same as ground floor - goaler’s house so built for gentleman debtors to have separate rooms - iron balcony round the 2nd floor of goaler’s house with staircases from the 3?different divisions of the prison (3 divisions? i.e. felons, debtors, and house of correction prisoners) - as little wood used as possible - iron roofing - principal mullions of goaler’s house windows iron so that in case of fire as the light wood frame might be burnt - all the floor joists iron? all the prison rooms stone-arched above and below - hinges iron plate reservoir from Greenwich into that the treadmill (10 people will keep it going) to pump water to supply the prison and the whole town - the men on the treadmill 10 minutes then rest 5 minutes from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. everyday - saw 10 upon the wheel - 30 or more might work at a time - a young soldier of the 80th in the house of correction for getting a girl with child - the commanding officer cannot resist his being imprisoned till some agreement is made with the parish officers -
Then went to the court - the crown end in large round tower (battlemented - all the whole building battlemented and castle-like) in the same pile of building with the prison (above the workshops &c joining to the tower is the platform for hanging people) - handsome court room but seems rather small - on the opposite side the street is another handsome tower and pile of battlemented building is the [?] [?] court same plan and size as the crown court - at or round the end of the court is a small crescent of neat sand brick houses called (in the plan of the town court crescent and [?] row) citadel and leading to it is Lowther street - Lord Lousdale’s picturesque in a magnificent gilt frame is to ornament the grand jury room (large handsome plain rather Gothic room - very neat Gothic oak ceiling - good mod? - plain square compartments at top - the cornice being small drops as in Henry 7th chapel) Lawyers room - witnesses ditto - every possible convenience - near to the prison is the Bush Inn or Holmes’s hotel in English street the 1st Inn in the town and 2nd is that where I am, the Crown and Mitre, close to Castle Street - In returning down English street from the prison to the market cross (a column on high large ? with 3 steps round the bottom of it) went down Fisher Street, passed thro’ the Shambles - got some how into Finkle street and up Castle street home and came in at 6 25/60 English street and Castle street - good, handsome streets - the last census (the clerk told me, 16,000 - but now the population 200,000) -
Dinner at 6 ½ - afterwards will 9 wrote the above of today - vide line 4 of today the weather - very heavy thunder shower at 3 40/60 (while I was in the cathedral) and 3 or 4 loud peals of thunder and saw a flash or 2 of lightning - fair after this and fine evening - no box come at 5 this afternoon - the waiter says it cannot come till 10 ½ p.m. by the Independent coach -at 9 a military band playing past the window for a few minutes cherry ripe - somehow this tune (played on board the steamer as the L-[awton]’s?, and I sailed from Liverpool for the Menai bridge) always soothes me to melancholy  - then settled accounts of the evening - and went to my room at 9 50/60 - sprinkled my bed with vinegar and rubbed over with it my face, neck, hands, arms and unluckily eyes - a little got in, smarted exceedingly and produced a great degree of inflammation that particularly in the right there was a mass of sort of moving jelly that completely enveloped the bloodshot eye - I had just got into wishing rather to have been bit by a hundred than taken such a remedy against them - when the box was announced - in despair to find they had sent the wrong one - desired boots to take me an inside place in the Independent at 3 ½ in the morning to go back to Dumfries in search of my box - got into bed again - could not sleep - afraid of not being awakened in time - called for a light - eight..

focused on the love Charis and Joshua had for one another !@~^&((flower girl dress for wedding
Angela: I have to say I really enjoyed every part of the wedding process. There was not a single dull moment. I can't really single out anything because everything was so special, from the overseas photo-shoot in Rome and Liverpool, to the video-shoot in Tokyo, to all the special projects with our brothers and sisters, our families who chipped in to help with different aspects of the wedding preparation. They had been so supportive and helpful, and having everyone we cared about and who cared about us to share this big celebration with us, every aspect of it was memorable. I'd also like to thank our late mothers, whom I think played huge roles in our lives when they lived, and even after they are gone. Their absence makes us treasure what we now have dearly, and in many ways, brought Gerrard and I closer together as a couple prom dresses with slits.

The powerful 'Queen' in this ad campaign is fully clothed while the 'King' is nude and vulnerable short mermaid dress, because The Wedding Present wants to emphasise on the qualities of the woman and strip away the usual sexual objectification of the woman. Her power lies in her ability to rise to the occasion and be strong in the times that her lover is weak. You will notice that there is nothing showy and gaudy about her; this collection is all about bringing out the individuality in every woman girls tutu dresses, so you'll see silhouette-skimming georgette dresses and draped silk organza gowns that are thick on textures. Much thought has been given into including only a minimal amount of beadwork on the gowns so that they will not distract from the natural beauty of a woman in love. Childhood sweethearts Charis Tan, 24, owner of Gifts of Grace Design, and Joshua Cheam, 28, Finance Manager, grew up together in church and formed a closer friendship over the years as they partnered together on events and projects. Charmed by Charis's wit and compassionate side, Joshua asked her out for a date and love blossomed between the two, forever tying the lovebirds together. With no particular theme in mind or a need for extravagant setups, Charis and Joshua entrusted their pre-wedding photoshoot to Bloc Memoire Photography with a request to include their families. The result was a beautiful pre-wedding photoshoot that focused on the love Charis and Joshua had for one another flower girl dress for wedding, and the love they and their families had for each other how to start wedding planning.

To answer the question of 'how to wear vintage for your age,' I decided to break 'age' into two demographics: the under 30 set and the over 30 set. The beauty of vintage is that an entire family of women ' from the teen girl to the grandmother; aunt, mother, sister, cousin, whomever! ' could technically wear 'vintage.' It's a style category that has no boundaries. But the style characteristics of vintage? Those do in fact have boundaries ' and you're going to want to know whether you're buying 'vintage' that fits your style palette, since you aren't shopping from a retail store you're familiar and comfortable with. You're shopping 'vintage,' not shopping 'The Gap' or 'Macy's.' The proposal! So, it was a regular evening jsweddenladress20107 where I was getting ready for bed, and Marc and I were looking at apartments online, to buy or rent. I got up to go to the bathroom, and when I came back to the room, Marc asked 'what do you think about this one'?, as if asking me to check out an apartment. He turned the laptop to my direction and on the screen, he had written 'WILL YOU MARRY ME'?. At first, I was like, 'wait, what'?, feeling quite puzzled. I thought he was just being funny or something. And then he closed the laptop to reveal the ring behind it. The Potion Master’s Grace ch. 18
Grace’s heart pounded loudly against her chest, sure that everyone in the room could hear it.    “Grace? What’s wrong?” Severus took a cautious step towards her.    She couldn’t hear him. She couldn’t hear anything but herself hyperventilating and her heart about to beat out of her chest, which now had a sharp-shooting pain through it. Her brain was screaming at her; not words, just really loud static and a long “Aaaahhhhh!” She shut her eyes tight and put her hands over her ears, but it didn’t stop. She also must’ve been saying, “no” over and over, but couldn’t hear herself say it, only feel her mouth moving.    “She’s having an anxiety attack,” Luna said, and instantly Severus was at her side.    He tried to pry her hands from her ears, tried to calm her down, but she kept shaking her head.    “Grace! Gracie, it’s me, please!”  he pleaded. Her legs started to give and he was the only support keeping her from crashing to the ground.    She couldn’t feel her body. It was like she was there, but wasn’t there at the same time. She was numb. All at once, her hyperventilating stopped, her brain was silent, and everything went black.
-
Grace woke up on the couch. She was hooked up to her oxygen again and there was a cool washcloth on her forehead. It had to have been Phoebe, Severus often panicked and froze on parental instincts in these moments.    She wanted to sit up, see where everyone had gone, but her body felt so heavy. But she could hear their voices from down the hall.
-
Inside Severus’ study, he, Phoebe, and Luna all stared at the envelope before them.    “Who’s Adina?” Phoebe asked.    “Her mother, of course,” Luna said reaching for the envelope and tearing it open.    “Luna!”    “Grace will never open it!” She read over the letter, distaste written all over her face. “Her mother is at a rehabilitation center and she’s finally allowed visitors so she wants Grace to come.” She folded the letter back up and tossed it back on the table like it burned her to touch it.    “It’s entirely up to Grace if she goes,” Severus said.    “And if she does, you’ll go with her,” Luna’s voice was stern, a tone rarely voiced by the girl.    “Shouldn’t Grace confront her alone?” Phoebe asked.    “No! After what that woman did to her? Grace will either have a mental breakdown and do something stupid, or murder Adina right there! Grace is strong, but she’s not mentally stable enough to do this alone! She needs Severus there! For once in her life, she has a damn support system and she’s put all of her reliance on him! And that’s final!”    Both adults gaped at the teenager. They’d never seen her so serious, so furious about something, it was scary. Luna was the closest one out of all three to Grace, she knew Grace’s thoughts and secrets, and the extent of what Adina had done to Grace. So they knew best not to argue, and just nodded their heads. Luna grabbed the letter and left the room. Severus looked at Phoebe, she shrugged, “Don’t look at me! She gets that from her father, her mother was chill about everything. She’s right though. You should go with Grace if she chooses to go.”    “You’d really think I’d let Gracie go all the way to Ireland alone?”    “No,” she smirked. “But, it was pretty funny seeing you cower at Luna’s yelling.”    “I did not cower.”    “You so did!! It was cute though,” she kissed him on his cheek. “Just like your face when I do that,” and she winked and walked away.    “I really wish I hated you.”    “Funny how our emotions have a way of betraying us!”
-
Grace’s head was in Luna’s lap as she braided her hair into dozens of sections. They sat watching Netflix, only talking ever so often, but the conversations weren’t very long. It was just easier not to talk.    Of course, Luna had texted Draco what happened, who then called Grace freaking out, already having one foot out the door before Grace calmed him down and told him that she was fine and she’d see him soon. She didn't want Draco to constantly worry about her, that wasn’t fair to him.    “I’m gonna go,” Grace murmured as an episode of Doctor Who ended.    “Grace, you don’t have to.”    “No, I do. Now that she knows where I am, she won’t quit pestering me until I do. So I’ll go in person and tell her to fuck off.”    “She is a crazy bitch.”    Grace snorted, “You don’t even know the half of it. I’ll go the day after tomorrow.”    “Yeah, tomorrow we’ll do a little retail therapy.”    “I gotta get dad a phone.”    “Oh, Merlin. That should be interesting.”
-
And it was.    “Grace, I don’t need a phone,” Severus said as he watched his daughter set it up.    “Yes, you do. What if there’s an emergency? Or… something.”    “I don’t even know how to use it!”    “Well, aren’t you glad that you have me around to get you caught up on technology? Honestly, dad, it’s the 21st century. Get with it.”    He turned to Phoebe, “Did… Was I just called old?” He turned back to Grace, “Did you just call me old? Seriously? Grace Audrey McClivert-Snape, I was twenty when you were born, okay? Dumbledore is, old. I am not.”    “Mhm,” she smirked. “Want me to make the text larger so you can read it better?”    “What happened to the sweet little Ravenclaw that barely said a word, and when she did, she was always so polite? Huh? Now you’re as snarky as- as-“    “You?” all three women said at once.    “Yes! … Oh, fuck.”    “Dad cursed! Put a Knot in the swear jar.”    “We don’t have a swear jar.”    “Really? Then, shit!”    “Okay, now we’re going to have a swear jar!”    “Here’s your phone. Have fun playing around with it!”    “Brat.”    “Okay, but your lock screen is the best thing ever.”    Somehow, Grace and Luna had managed to take a picture— or as Severus learned— “selfie,” with Cas and set it as his lock screen. Actually, there were about a hundred of these “selfies” already on his phone, how, he wasn’t sure. He smiled, “I like the cat the most.”    “Stupid cat.”    Cas meowed.
-
Severus didn’t know of any apparition points in Northern Ireland, at least ones that were secretive enough that should he mess up, he would be safe from being noticed. But he did know of a few in England and Scotland. Originally, taking a ferry from Liverpool to Belfast sounded the easiest, and it would have been exciting because both he and Grace loved the Beatles, and they could have possibly made something fun out of the day she was dreading. But, the ferry ride was eight hours, and Grace was not having any of it. It’s not that she got sea-sick or anything, she just didn’t like the idea of being on a really big boat with lots of strangers and their cars for eight hours straight. Plus, that would mean they’d have to get up at the crack of dawn so they could be on the ferry by 5 am and arrive in Belfast a little afternoon. So, she did some research and found a much shorter ferry route from Cairnryan to Larne, which was only two hours. What was great was that they could sleep in a little longer and get on the ferry by 10:30 am and be in Larne by 12:30 pm, and then take an hour bus ride to Ballycastle and be there around the same time they would if they left from Liverpool.    Grace didn’t sleep the night before, so she spent the majority of the night staring at her walls, the ceiling, the starry night sky out her windows. Luna and Phoebe slept over, Luna staying in Grace’s room as usual, and Phoebe sleeping in one of the guest bedrooms which was actually supposed to be Luna’s room, but Luna always insisted on sharing a room with Grace, since, “That’s what teenage girls always do in the movies,” not that Grace really minded; sometimes it got rather lonely in her room, no matter how many photographs she hung up. Plus, Luna was a sleep-cuddler. Don’t judge. It’s human nature to want to cuddle.    Anyway, Grace only got about two hours of sleep. So when it was finally time to get out of bed, Luna had to practically drag her out.    Grace sat on her bed staring at her closet, shoulders hunched and arms crossed over her stomach, “I don’t know what to wear.”    Luna, stepping out of the bathroom, took her wet hair out of its towel turban and stared at her almost full walk-in closet with shopping bags full of clothes Grace still had yet to put away or hang up, “Seriously?” Grace nodded. “I hate you.”    It was chilly that day, well, chilly for the summer. It was really about 19ºC, but still. And it was bleak; it must’ve rained overnight and the sky was full of gray clouds and no sun.    “Why can’t I just wear sweats and a baggy t-shirt?” Grace groaned as she watched Luna, her fashion consultant, rummage through her wardrobe.    “Because if you dress like shit, that’s how you’ll feel. I know you don’t want to, but throw on some bright clothes, brush your hair, and put on a little makeup, and it might just help. Here, this shirt,” it was a pink and white striped tank top, “this skirt,” it was an A-line baby blue skirt that had a matching belt that tied together in the front in a bow, “your boots,” brown knee-high riding boots, “and your trench coat.”    Grace got dressed, put on some makeup, and while she may have looked cute, she still felt anxious. She checked her phone, two messages from Draco:
Draco: I know today is going to be hard, but you’re strong. If you need anything, if you just wanna talk, I’ll be here. Just call. <3    Draco: Also, fuck her, fuck her for fucking with you like this. Punch her in the throat, baby!
Grace smiled, Dray really was great. It was nice to feel cared for by someone that wasn’t unconditional, like Severus, or friendly, like Luna. Rather, mutual voluntary passion for someone that translated into the L-word that neither of them dared to speak yet.
Grace: Thanks, babe. <3 Though, I want to do a lot more than just throat punch her. Hope you have bail money!    Draco: Just don’t leave any fingerprints! Can’t get arrested if no one knows.    Grace: We are terrible people.    Draco: That’s why we’re perfect for each other.
It was all sappy, but she didn’t care. She was allowed the sappiness, she was allowed the gross romantic cliches. Dammit, she should be allowed to have a normal teenage life.
-
Apparition sucked (no pun intended) when you were tired. It took everything out of you for a second and made functioning normally for a few moments afterward very hard. Grace just couldn’t wait until she could learn how to apparate on her own, maybe it’d be easier.    The good thing was that the ferry wasn’t too crowded. Besides, who would be taking a ferry from Cairnryan to Larne anyway? Most people just sucked it up and took the eight-hour ride to Belfast or flew. Grace mostly slept the way there, head resting on Severus’ arm.    Severus had no idea how Grace was going to react when she saw her mother. Would she panic and refuse to do so? Or would she finally snap and try to kill her? He really should’ve checked to make sure she wasn’t armed before they left. Did she bring her wand? He hoped she just wouldn’t do anything stupid.    Honestly, how would Severus act though? Severus had a certain degree of hatred for Grace’s birth parents, though his hatred for her mother wasn’t as strong as it was for her father. He was lucky he was locked up in prison because Severus would surely do something so drastic that he would find himself locked up in Azkaban. But her mother? He almost pitied her. She was in a rehabilitation center, she’d lost everything she’s ever had; she had ruined her own life.    After two hours, they finally arrived in Northern Ireland. Stepping off, Grace stopped in her tracks and just took a moment to look around. It was like a wave of nostalgia and familiarity washed over her, and she smiled. Of course, this wasn’t her home of Ballycastle. But it was close.    Fortunately, Severus and Grace had the bus to themselves, save for two other people who would eventually get off at different stops along the way. They were on the A2 Causeway Coastal route, going past steep cliffs that overlooked the ocean, uphill, downhill, so close to the edge sometimes Severus thought that the bus would tip over on a sharp turn, but Grace didn’t mind. She just gazed out the window and tapped her fingers to whatever music was playing on the radio.    “What’s your favorite Beatles song?” Grace asked.    “‘Hey Jude.’”    “Really?”    He nodded, “My mother used to sing it to me when I was little.”    “What was she like?”    “She was kind and very smart. She always tried her best to be the peacemaker and be there for me. Unfortunately, she made one mistake when she was young and that led to her demise. And I couldn’t save her,” he looked at his daughter and smiled. “She would’ve loved you though. I think she always wanted a daughter, so she would’ve spoiled you.”    “If she was anything like you, I would’ve loved her too.”    They passed the time along just like that: asking questions that would lead to stories that would lead to more questions.    “Ballycastle,” the bus driver finally called out. It was as if Grace was excited to finally see her hometown after eight years, but was paralyzed by fear in her seat.    “Grace? Are you alright?” Severus asked.    “Hm? Uh, yeah, yeah I think. Just got… lost in thought or something,” she quickly made her way off the bus; just had to get it over with it like a band-aid.    She looked around at the bright coastal town before her. Not much had changed in the eight years since she’s been gone. It still looked the same, maybe a few new coats of paint, and it still smelled like the sea. The bus pulled away and there was no turning back now.    “So this is Ballycastle,” Severus said taking it all in.    “Aye, this is Ballycastle. C’mon I’ll give you a tour,” she took Severus’ hand and started walking. They weren’t in any hurry, and they could use some walking around after being cooped up for over three hours.    Severus was sure they were getting lost, having walked around aimlessly, but Grace knew exactly where they were going. She had the whole town mapped out in her head.    “So this was my Primary school, Ballycastle Integrated Primary School, and Nursery Unit. We wore awful uniforms, baby blue collared shirts with burgundy jumpers and the girls had to wear gray skirts and knee socks in the warmer months, but when it got cold we were ‘allowed’ to wear slacks.”    “But you wear a uniform now, so what’s the difference?”    Grace smirked, “I almost never wear my uniform under my robes. Especially in the winter, I’m usually in joggers and my Uggs.”    “Grace!”    “Oi, get over it, no one wears the damn uniform unless it’s something special. Okay! Next stop!”    They continued walking, Grace occasionally pointing to random buildings:    “That’s where I fell off my bike.”    “That’s where I twisted my ankle.”    “That’s the pub he would always get drunk at after work,” referring to Mr. McClivert.    “That’s where Artie McCleod tried to kiss me in P7 so I punched him in the face and broke his nose.”    “And here’s the Diamond, known as the Heart of Ballycastle. I personally don’t think it’s shaped like a diamond, it looks more like a triangle, but apparently, it’s a diamond.”    They stood in the center of the Diamond, next to a monument that's plaque read was in memory of Dr. George Matthew O’Connor. They watched the locals pass by, going into pubs and shops. A few of them waved, and they waved back; Grace was thankful no one recognized her.    There was a group of men outside a pub playing music. No singing, just some guitars, a fiddle, a banjo, and a small drum set. Grace watched them with a smile on her face, recognizing the songs they were playing from growing up here in Northern Ireland. She tapped her foot to the music, and she caught the eye of the man playing the fiddle.    “Oi, wee lass!” he called to her.    Grace looked around for someone else he could have been talking to.    He pointed his bow at her, “Yes you!” he laughed. “With the pretty red hair!”    She blushed, “Yes sir?”    “Do ye dance?”    “Aye!”    “Well c’mere!”    She ran across the road to the band, Severus following her. He was ready to reach for his wand, but it was all under false caution.    “What’s your name, miss?”    “Grace,” she shook the man’s hand.    “Nice to meet ye, Grace. You Riverdance?”    “When I was little, but I probably still can.”    “To any music?” a man with a guitar asked.    “Probably.”    “How’s bout a challenge?”    “Aye,” she took off her coat and handed it to Severus.    “Grace-“ he started.    “It’s fine, dad. I won’t get hurt. Promise!” she flexed her ankles; this was going to be really hard in boots.    Severus sighed, leaning against the wall of the pub, watching carefully. Leave it to Grace to live completely on the edge of life when Severus just wanted to keep her in a bubble.    Grace stood in front of the band, trying to avoid the looks of passerby's, just keeping her gaze on the O’Connor monument.    The man with the fiddle started, and Grace laughed, noticing the song as Dropkick Murphy’s ‘I’m Shipping Up To Boston.”    She danced along to the music, realizing it was very, very hard to Riverdance in boots. And the tempo was fast, so it was even harder to tap and scuff along. But she was doing it, smiling and laughing along, adding a graceful flare to the otherwise hoarse song. People from the street and out of shops and the pub started to gather around the band to watch the scene. They clapped along to the music and cheered the redhead before them on.    There was a little girl in the growing crowd that tugged on her mother’s pant leg, “Look, mummy. Look at her dance. I wanna dance just like her, mummy!”    She heard a couple of high school boys whistle, “How come the hot girls never are the ones that are in our class?”    “I know, right?” the other boy said.    The music ended and Grace took a deep breath and bowed and the small crowd cheered.    A few people came up to her, as she responded in her natural nervous giggles, and complimented her. The boys tried asking for her number, but she politely declined and told them she had a boyfriend, but that she was very flattered.    “Ah, well, he’s a lucky lad then,” one of the boys said.    “Anyways, you made our day far more interesting than it was. Have a nice day, miss,” said the other, and they both waved and went on their way. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how to respond to someone rejecting to give you their number!    With Grace’s little show brought more attention to the small band. They thanked Grace profusely as they were at the same time bombarded with a few requests.    “Do you live here in Ballycastle, miss?” asked the man with the fiddle.    Severus walked over and handed Grace her coat. She put it back on, the sea breeze picking up, “I used to. A long time ago.”    The two started walking towards Anne Street, when he asked, “What’s your last name?”    “Snape!” she called over her shoulder and turned the corner onto Anne. She looked up at her dad, who looked both proud and amused.    “What’s that look for?”
“I’m just really proud of you of you, you know that right, Grace?”    She nodded as they stopped in front of Solas Moyle.    “You don’t have to do this. We can turn around and go home right now. It’s your choice,” he put a hand on her shoulder.    She shook her head, “No. It needs to be done. I need to tell her face-to-face that she doesn’t have any control over me or any emotions. Just, please stay close, okay?”    “Don’t worry, Gracie. I’m not going anywhere. Now, hand it over,” he held his hand out.    “Ugh. You’re no fun,” she pulled her wand out of her boot and handed it to him.    “And I’m not having my daughter being expelled for using magic underage out of Hogwarts,” he put her wand in the inside pocket of his coat.
-
Solas Moyle was painted with bright colors and filled with a “cheery” staff, but its patients’ eyes were filled with misery. Grace had been in their shoes before; being in an institution where you basically had no freedom. Every part of your day was monitored and planned. You couldn’t wear certain things, have certain things in your room, or even go to the bathroom without someone standing outside the door. Each day you had to sit in a circle and talk about your feelings and how you’re doing, and then have a one-on-one and talk about the same thing, and then do group activities that you could care less about doing.    “May I help you, miss?” the woman behind the desk asked after they had been buzzed in.    “Uh, yeah. We uh… We… Adina McClivert?” Grace stumbled out; her chest felt tight.    “Oh, she’s been waiting. You must be her daughter,” the woman handed Grace and Severus visitor’s passes.    “No,” Grace said as if she had just been asked to drink poison. She put on the stupid pass and opened the stupid door into the stupid rec room. Did she mention that she thought all of this was fucking stupid?    “Relax,” Severus said noting Grace’s clenched fists. He was glad he took her wand.    “Whatever,” she shoved her hands into her pockets. She made her way over to the woman with dark red hair, just like herself.    Adina McClivert was a short, thin woman with curly, long, deep red hair. Her skin was a ghastly white, even whiter than Grace’s, and she had no freckles, unlike Grace as well. Other than that, and Adina’s brown eyes, they looked strikingly similar. That, and the obvious wear and tear years of drug abuse had on Adina’s body.    “Well I’ll be damned,” Adina said standing from her spot on the old, frumpy rec room couch. “I didn’t think you’d show.”    “Just as surprised,” Grace responded, flinching away from Adina’s arms as she tried to hug her former daughter.    “And who’s this?” she asked looking at Severus.    Before he could speak up, Grace cut in, “This is Severus Snape. He’s one of my professors at school and he’s great and he adopted me. So he’s my true family now.” Her scowl towards Adina transitioned to admiration when she shot a glance towards her dad.    “Pleasure to meet you, Severus.”    “Likewise,” his voice was laced with venom as she shook her hand as he had nothing but resentment for the woman.    Grace smirked at Adina’s slight reaction to Severus’ overwhelming aura of absolute hatred.    “Well, please, sit,” Adina gestured at another couch, exactly like the one adjacent. The two of them sat, Grace, letting out a huff as she took her hands out of her pockets and crossed her arms. She looked at the woman sitting across from her; she looked sickly, her body was covered in track marks that had barely faded against her pale skin, and those teeth were probably fake as well. It was nice to see Karma had done her part on Grace’s mother, no matter in what form it was. Grace hoped her father was doing just as bad rotting in prison.    “So, tell me about this special Wizarding school you go to, Grace. I always knew you were special. Always making strange things happen when you were little.”    Grace narrowed her eyes, “Are you stalking me now?”    She shook her head, “No. Well, maybe a wee bit. I called up your last foster family, The Nobles. They filled me in and told me where I could find you.”    “Remind me to hex them,” Grace mumbled loud enough for Severus to hear.    “Is it really wise to be speaking openly about magic in public?” he asked.    “With what everyone here talks about on a daily basis and the shite they see?”    Severus shrugged, Fair enough.    Adina turned back to Grace, “And of course I’ve been keeping up on all of your achievements here in our world. Figure skating competitions, dance recitals, violin and piano recitals; that’s all stuff anyone can look up on Google, dear.”    Grace rolled her eyes, “Well I had to give all of that stuff up on behalf of attending Hogwarts because I simply don’t have the time, but I still enjoy it. But I’ve found other stuff to do at my new school.”    “Such as?”    “I play Quidditch. It’s… It’s quite hard to explain, but my position is pretty important.”    “And are you doing well in your classes?”    “A bit too well. I think I annoy the teachers sometimes,” she smirked at Severus.    “Nobody likes a know-it-all, Grace Audrey.”    “Audrey? Whatever happened to Grace Adina?” the older woman raised a brow.    “I changed that shit as soon as I entered the foster system. Like I’d want to have anything that reminded me of you,” Grace glared at the woman in front of her. Severus bit his tongue to correct Grace on her language and attitude but then he realized, This woman deserves everything that’s gonna be handed to her.    “Now, now, Gracie. Watch your tongue.”    “Who are you to tell me what to do? Who are you to think you have any control over me? You were the one who was too high to protect me from him when I was seven-years-old! If you had any love for me, you wouldn’t have shot up! You were supposed to be there to stop him, to do something! And you could’ve cared less about me! You cared more about your fucking drugs!”    Severus looked around the rec room and noticed that not just one light was flickering, but they all were starting to erratically flicker. They flickered faster as Grace’s voice got louder. Uh-oh.    Adina narrowed her eyes, “That’s no way to talk to your moth-“    “You are not my mother!” Grace stood up, fists clenched so tightly her knuckles were white, and in an instant, the lights in the room got extremely bright and with a pop, the room went dark. Grace flinched and covered her ears at the loud pop, unaware she was the one who caused it.    Before the patients could start a commotion, one of the staff flipped the breaker, turning the lights back on.    “Okay, I think we’re done here,” Severus stood, taking Grace by the arm and pulling her away from a terrified Adina.    Before they left, Grace called over her shoulder her final words to her former mother, “And leave me the hell alone, or I swear to god I’ll-“ she didn’t get finish before Severus pulled her out the door.
-
Once outside, Grace’s emotions finally washed over her; her eyes were full of tears and she was bloody pissed. She went over to a narrow alley across the street and punched a wall. “Fuck!” she yelled clutching her hand.    Severus ran over to her, “Now why would you think that’d be a good idea?”    “I don’t know! I just needed to punch something and- ugh! That bloody hurt!”    “Well, yeah, you punched a brick wall, She-Hulk!”    Grace took a few deep breaths and wiped her tears, “I’m sorry.”    “For? The wall doesn’t have feelings, Gracie,” he was trying his best to get her to laugh.    “No, for- for in there.”    “Grace, don’t you dare apologize.”    “But-“    “Grace,” he pulled her into a hug. “You didn’t do anything wrong. Although, you’ll have to learn how to control your emotions better. Surprised you didn’t blow up the whole building.”    “Huh?” she looked up at her dad, confused.    “You blew the circuit in there.”    “Wait, that was me?”    “Yes, you honestly didn't know that?”    “No! That’s so cool! I’m like, a superhero or something. Miss… Electric! No… Electric Shock? Nah, I think that one is taken.”    Severus rolled his eyes, at least she was smiling again.    “Ooh! Before we leave, I wanna show you something!” she grabbed Severus’ hand and started leading the way.
-
When Severus thought “something,” he thought maybe a park or a monument. Not a bloody path that led to a treacherous rope bridge to a tiny island! First of all, he was pretty sure they were trespassing.    “It's closed. Weather isn’t good enough today. I used to come here all the time when I was little,” she said as she jumped the fence.    “Grace, no.”    “Grace, yes. Now c’mon! Hop it!”    “If we get arrested, I’m not paying for your bail,” he said as he reluctantly hopped the fence.    And then the rope bridge. He was going to kill Grace. She went first, and about halfway over, because she thinks she’s bloody funny, started shifting her weight, making the bridge sway.    “Grace Audrey McClivert-Snape!”    And she just kept laughing her ass off. Yup, he was going to kill her.    Finally, they got across, “Welcome to Carrick-A-Rede Island!”    Severus looked around, there was only a single building on the small island and it was surrounded by the sea and Ireland’s Cliffs. “It is pretty amazing.”    “Right?” she walked over to the edge, breathing in the sea breeze. She sat down, legs hanging off of the edge. She looked over her shoulder to her dad and patted the grass next to her, “I promise the edge isn’t gonna break off.”    “I swear, Grace…” but he sat next to her anyway.    “Thank you for coming today.”    “You don’t have to face everything on your own, Grace,” he wrapped an arm around her shoulder. “You shouldn’t have to, at least.”    “Thank you. It really does mean a lot… Hey, speaking of not being alone, when are you going to tell Phoebe how you feel?”    “What?” Severus asked, trying to sound oblivious.    “Dad, it’s obvious you like Phoebe. Perhaps even love her. You need to tell her before she goes back to New York. The Universe is giving you a second chance and if you don’t take it now, then she’s never going to come back!”    He knew she was right, he just didn’t want to admit it, and he didn’t want to admit that he was indeed in love with Phoebe. “Shut up, Grace.” But she just smirked, knowing she was right all along.
-
Severus was able to find an apparition point to return home to Snape Manor. Grace was emotionally exhausted, and all she could do was say goodnight to everyone before heading upstairs to her room. But something was blocking her door. When she finally got the door open enough to squeeze through, she gasped; her room was full of dozens of sunflowers.    On her bed was a note, next to Cas who was rather enjoying himself playing with the flowers. The note read: “Sorry today was awful, but I thought you could use something to brighten your gray day. I’ll pick you up tomorrow around seven. Love, Draco.”    She smiled wide, holding the note to her chest, her heart swelled. She loved that boy.

Young & Wild: Part 7
On the return flight to JFK, Georgina found herself torn. On one hand, she didn’t want to leave Daniel. Yet, she was anxious to get home to see the dogs. When they were actually able to travel with her, there would be nothing keeping her in New York.
Georgina didn’t have long to dwell on the thought, the start of the spring semester saw her free time drastically reduced. True to Preston’s prior claims, she spent all of her time on school or traveling back and forth to Liverpool. When she wasn’t in England, her weekend mornings were dedicated to watching Daniel play.
On this particular morning, the weather seemed to be stuck in winter even though it was April. With the match being played on Friday, Georgina decided to to take the dogs and her laptop to the Starbucks on the corner. It was her goal to outline a few journal articles that she’d need later on and then take the boys to the park. How much work she’d get done all depended on how distracted she got.
After zipping the tail of her scarf underneath her puffer vest, Georgina donned a pair of sunglasses and set off with Odin and Thor in tow. The barista knew her order by now so she didn’t even need to go inside to order. Setting up at a table in the sun, she pulled a couple of rawhide chews out for the dogs and got to work. It felt like she was starting to hit her stride when a shadow blocked out the section of the sun she was sitting in. At first, owing it to a passing cloud, Georgina didn’t pay it any mind. It was only when it didn’t move that she looked up.
Standing in front of her with arms folded across her chest was none other than Maureen Walcott.
Georgina pressed her lips together. “Hello, Maureen. To what do I owe the pleasure your visit?”
“Don’t play dumb, Georgina, It’s not becoming of you.” She stood rigidly, clutching her purse in front of her. “You will not leave my son.”
While Maureen’s voice was soft, the threat was very apparent. Yet instead of cowering, Georgina had to prevent herself from smirking. “I don’t know how much clearer I need to be, Preston and I are no longer involved.”
“I don’t think you understand me,” She cleared her throat. “If you want to do anything of importance with your career, you will marry Preston.”
Georgina shook her head. “I don’t care if I work in retail for the rest of my life, I’m not going to pretend to be happy when I’m not.”
Even with her sunglasses on, Georgina knew that Maureen could tell they were at an impasse.
“Well in that case, I hope you’re prepared to deal with the consequences of your actions.” Clearly frustrated that she couldn’t bully Georgina, Maureen turned as abruptly as she arrived and walked off.
Taking a moment to process what had just happened, Georgina shook her head and closed her laptop. “Fuck it.”
Packing up her things, Georgina took her coffee to go and set off for the park with the dogs. She pulled out her phone and sent a text to Daniel.
“I’m done. Call me <3”
A little more than half an hour later, Daniel called, typical smirk evident in his voice.
“Ok, Georgie, what’s up? What are you done with?”
With a sigh, she smiled. “Preston’s mother approached me on the street today and told me that I’ll never amount to anything if I don’t marry her son.”
“So when are you moving here again?” He laughed, but Georgina knew there was an actual question behind the humor.
“Not soon enough.” Finishing the last few sips of her coffee, she looked around for a trash can. “The boys should be cleared to travel in about two months and i’ll be done with school the beginning of June.”
Georgina expected an immediate response, but instead, he paused. “You’re really serious about moving here then?”
“Danny, I love you.” She felt herself smiling. “Normally when I’ve had a boyfriend, I couldn’t wait for my alone time. But now…I miss you every day and I hate leaving you when I have to go home.”
She heard a small laugh again. “I love you too, George. That makes me really happy.”
“Sooooo,” She smiled to herself, wishing she could be next to him. “My dad’s wife is hosting a benefit thing for one of her charities and he really wants me to go. Any chance you could be my date?”
“If I can get the time off, of course.”
Even without the reassurance of a definite answer, Georgina found herself sighing contently.
“Listen kid, I’ve got to get going, call me before you go to sleep, ok?”
Despite the fact that he couldn’t see her, she nodded. “Yeah, Dan.”
That had become their daily ritual, one Georgina found she couldn’t do without. If no other time during the day, they would speak before she went to bed. Sometimes there would be phone sex involved, but in general, she found she slept better when she was able to say goodnight to him.
The next day, Georgina found herself window shopping for something to wear to Linda’s fundraiser. She thought for a brief second about coordinating colors with Daniel but eventually decided that would be more tacky than anything. Technically, she thought to herself, she didn’t even have confirmation that he’d be able to come. When nothing caught her eye, Georgina realized that she’d need to give a little more thought to what she was going to wear. In what she knew her father would interpret as an endearing gesture, Georgina ended up calling her step mother and asking if she’d care to come down for a little shopping trip.
When Linda agreed to rearrange her schedule for the visit, Georgina knew she needed to be appreciative and take whatever lecture was coming her way. Their relationship had never been one of love or admiration, Linda often found Georgina to be petulant and Georgina resented that Linda tried to act as her mother at first. Given that both women had the happiness of the same man at heart, they found it was easier to get along. Once Linda realized that she was never really going to be Georgina’s stepmother but more so her father’s second wife, the two came to an understanding of sorts. Georgina toned the attitude down and Linda reserved her judgement for situations that seemed to warrant it most.
Georgina knew that if her father had spoken to Linda about the broken engagement, today was going to be one of those times.
Expecting Linda around 11, Georgina made sure that she had taken the boys out for their walk and that there was cold Perrier in the refrigerator. When she arrived, garment bag in tow, Georgina quickly set her up in the guest room so she could freshen up and change from her travel clothes into more suitable shopping attire.
“Ok, we have lunch reservations at NYY Steak and then we can hit the stores.” Linda opened the refrigerator and smiled when she saw Georgina had been expecting her to do so. “I hear that we have some catching up to do.”
When the pair were seated and had ordered, Linda raised an eyebrow to Georgina.
“Why don’t we start by you telling me what you know?” Georgina decided to tread lightly at first, not wanting to divulge any more than necessary.
Linda cleared her throat. “Your father simply said that there had been a turn of events that I probably would not like.”
“I called off the engagement. Preston and I are no longer together.” Speaking quickly, she found the words much easier to say than she had anticipated.
“Why?” Linda seemed genuinely surprised and even a little saddened by the recent development. “You two seemed like such a good fit.”
Unintentionally, Georgina frowned. “On paper, I guess we were. If that was the only thing I was concerned about then maybe I would have been ok faking my way through things. I told Preston it wasn’t fair to him because I didn’t really have time for a relationship.”
“That’s what you told him. What was your real reason?” Linda straightened her silverware feeling as though Georgina might be more forthcoming if she wasn’t being stared at.
Georgina let out a great sigh. “I guess I initially thought that I would develop feelings for him but it never happened. When he asked me to marry him, all I could think about was how it would be perceived if I turned him down in front of everyone.”
“You’re definitely right about that,” Linda shrugged. “It would not have gone over well with his family.”
With a smirk, she rolled her eyes. “Well I’ve succeeded in pissing the almighty Maureen Walcott off. She approached me the other day and threatened that I would get nowhere with my career if I didn’t marry him. Preston can’t stand the thought of telling his colleagues that he’s no longer engaged and wants me to keep up a charade.”
“You’ll be fine. You’re a smart girl with an ivy league education, the word of a woman that hasn’t really done much of anything won’t travel far. Besides, your father and I carry far more weight than the Walcott’s do.” Linda’s consolation and lack of mollycoddling was surprisingly comforting to Georgina. “But tell me something. When you wake up in the morning, do you feel any sort of loss over your relationship?”
Pressing her lips together, she tilted her head to the side and offered a slight shrug. “I feel bad that Preston isn’t taking it well, but I don’t miss him at all. I’m actually relieved.”
“Well, you can't exactly argue with that.” Linda studied Georgina and for a moment it seemed as though she was going to say something else but instead, she shrugged as well. “Now, where are we shopping today?”
After going in and out of practically ever store on the avenue, Linda had four possible dresses but Georgina had yet to find something she liked.
“You know,” Linda let her fingers trail against the hem of a mannequin’s dress as she sat down on one of the chaises, “I’m starting to think you have impossibly high standards, even compared to me.”
Georgina sighed. “I don’t think my standards are too high, I just don’t know what I’m looking for. That’s part of the reason I asked you to help me.”
“Are we talking dresses or men here?” Raising an eyebrow, Linda sat up straighter.
“Dresses.” Contemplating whether or not she wanted to tell Linda about Daniel now or later but ultimately decided to delay the lecture. “Definitely dresses.”
With a nod, Linda accepted the challenge that was presented to her. “Ok. I’m going to pull…I don’t know…six dresses, and you’re going to choose one of them you like the best. Then we’ll go to Barney’s and do the same thing. Then Saks and so forth until we find one that you like the best.”
“Alright.” Georgina agreed, slightly relieved to have her current burden of choice narrowed down.
In the end, it was a simple black Marchesa dress with a halter neckline and a fluted skirt and a thigh high split that won Georgina over. Her favorite feature was the ornately beaded and jeweled neckline which meant she would only need to find earrings to wear as far as accessories went.
Once Linda was on her way back home, Georgina let herself relax as she flopped down on the sofa.  After staring at the ceiling for a minute, she heard her text alert go off. She immediately smiled to see it was from Daniel only to frown when she actually read the message
Really sorry, George but I can’t make it to the States and back without missing a practice. Call you soon, xoxo
Georgina thought carefully to find the words she wanted to use before replying. Once she had sent her response, she’d hoped it hadn’t come off as too disappointed.
It’s ok Danny, thanks for trying
As disappointed as she was, Georgina was at least partly relieved that she had a little bit longer to figure out how she wanted to explain Daniel to Linda. Ultimately, it was only her father’s approval that mattered but she knew if Linda disapproved it would still be difficult.
Georgina sat down at her desk and pulled out the planner she used to keep track of deadlines and appointments. Turning to a page three months from now, she to a day that had Graduation written on it. Next to it was written England?
Circling the day after her graduation, Georgina nodded to herself before she glanced at the puppies. “Not long now, boys. Not long.”

Tips to Choose a Serviced Apartment in Liverpool
Thousands of people visit Liverpool every year for short holidays or longer business trips. If you’ve got a similar visit planned in the near future, you should definitely consider staying at serviced apartments in Liverpool. With so many options to choose from, how do you find the one that best suits your needs? These are some things that can help you decide:
Location
This one is perhaps the most important factor to look at when you’re looking for a serviced apartment in Liverpool. You might want to be close to the city centre and main attractions if you’re on a holiday, or the business district if you’re on business. A place which is within walking distance of the city’s best attractions is perfect for your needs. You could take a look at FM Living which is located right in the heart of Liverpool’s business and leisure district. It is just a minute away from Liverpool One which is the city’s most popular retail and leisure destination.
Amenities
A good serviced apartment is one that has all the amenities you’d expect from your home. This means a fully equipped kitchen, a proper bathroom, sleeping area and a sitting area to relax or unwind. The kitchen should have some kitchen utensils and dining ware, the sitting area should have a TV, and your sleeping area should have a comfortable bed. These are the very basic amenities that you should expect to find in a good serviced apartment.
Services
The services you receive at your Liverpool Serviced apartment is also important. It should have a receptionist to attend to your queries, and a maintenance and housekeeping staff that will help you keep your apartment clean. This could be an especially useful service if you are staying in the apartment for a long period of time.
Price
Price is another factor when choosing a serviced apartment in Liverpool for your stay. You can find luxurious serviced apartments if you have a good budget, or you can choose from budget serviced apartments too. You can even find some luxury serviced apartments in Liverpool’s city centre at very affordable prices. One such apartment is FM Living which is built inside the iconic Produce Exchange building.
A serviced apartment gives you a lot more freedom than staying at a similarly priced hotel. It works to your advantage when you are planning to stay for a longer period of time. So when you’re booking your stay in Liverpool the next time, think of the above factors. By choosing FM Living serviced apartment, you get hotel-like amenities at affordable prices. You can opt for studio, one bed and two bedroom apartments that cater to your every need. A fully equipped kitchen here has all modern amenities that you need. Start your mornings on a refreshing note when you wake up after a good night’s sleep on the comfortable beds of FM Living serviced apartments. CBD Ban: Brits Take Up Fight And Send Lawyers To Brussels
If you wish to re-publish this story please do so with following accreditation
AUTHOR: Mark Taylor
PUBLISHER:  CANNABIS LAW REPORT
Cannabis lawyers are heading to Brussels next week to challenge a recent decision by the European Union to reclassify food products containing cannabidiol (CBD) and prohibit their sale.
While the rest of the western world moves towards an acceptance of cannabis products either medically or recreationally, the European Union pushed back in February, updating a classification of CBD under the Novel Food Regulation.
The law ((EU) 2015/2283), which applies across all member states, means any product deemed as ‘novel’ must gain authorisation from food authorities before it can be sold as a foodstuff within the EU.  A food can be considered ‘novel’ if it was not consumed by humans to any significant degree prior to May 1997.
These regulations apply to food supplements, ingredients, and substances intended to be incorporated into food. In the case of CBD, this includes extracts, oils and other derived products that are intended for ingestion by humans.
The decision caused outcry amongst pro-cannabis groups having come almost out of the blue, and now the legal troops have been mobilised in a bid to overturn the decision.
London law firm Mackrell Turner Garrett, together with a leading food and trading standards barrister, were instructed by the Cannabis Trades Association UK (CTA) to make representations to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
Robert Jappie, head of cannabis law at Mackrell Turner Garrett and Jonathan Kirk QC, of Gough Square Chambers, will travel to Brussels on March 12 to meet with EFSA officials.
They are taking issue with the change by the EU in its submission for the term ‘cannabinoids’ states: “Extracts of Cannabis sativa L. and derived products containing cannabinoids are considered novel foods as a history of consumption has not been demonstrated. This applies to both the extracts themselves and any products to which they are added as an ingredient (such as hemp seed oil).”
Although EFSA’s Novel Food Catalogue is merely advisory, domestic regulators rely on it for guidance and are likely to act first, ask questions later.
Austria’s government interpreted the EU law in such to ban CBD even prior to the change, taking a hardline stance to the emergence of multiple shops selling oils, and even CBD-infused cakes, on the high street.
Such is the immaturity of Europe’s technically regulated CBD market, it’s true worth is almost impossible to price. US analysts say CBD could be a $22bn market by 2022; by comparison, any EU sector would larger.
While unexpected, the EU’s decision is a reminder to business of its independent thinking and willingness to act quickly in cases where it observes a potential threat to consumers.
It has long kicked back against trends emerging from the US in financial and other markets, not least since the 2008 financial crisis. It has also recently began flexing extra-territoriality muscles in regards to data regulation, positioning itself as a world police of consumer data, to the chagrin of Silicon Valley’s luminaries.
European capitalists have been closely watching the green wave sweep over the US and manoeuvring to cash in when it hits these shores, however Brussels is a different beast, and member states, however desperate for cash, are perfectly capable of slowing down the tide to give themselves and advantage.
The soaring popularity in Britain is not in question however, and can be evidenced in the CTA’s growing membership; since formation in 2016 it now boasts more than 700 members who produce a wide range of legal CBD products.
“The growth of the UK’s CBD industry has been spectacular in the last three years and its contribution to the UK economy is thought to exceed £100m ($130m) per annum,’ said Jappie.
Novel food is defined as food that was not consumed to a considerable degree by citizens of the EU prior to 1997, when the first regulation on novel food came into force.
The EU claims CBD falls into this category, however supporters say hemp flower products such as hempseed and hempseed oil (extract) are already authorized, and the ban is unlawful
“Only food products that are enriched with isolated CBD should be considered novel,” said Mike Harlington, chairman of the CTA. “Hemp extracts are not novel and this is the position we have presented for almost two years now. Our position remains unchanged. Our members’ products remain legal, and will not be removed from sale.”

ISG to build £33m Sheffield high-rise student block
European student accommodation specialist provider Valeo has picked contractor ISG to build its first UK project.
ISG will develop the £33m building located close to Sheffield’s two universities.
It will offer 586 beds, communal facilities, including a central club lounge with extensive balcony on the ninth floor overlooking the city, as well a café, private dining, cinema and gym.
ISG has demolished an existing garage structure on the site, and is set to start the concrete frame in the next few weeks, which will rise to 14-storeys at its highest point.
The building, which fronts Ecclesall Road, will feature traditional masonry, with brick feature panels to its façade.
ISG will also form car parking spaces for seven retail units, which will occupy the ground floor of the new building, with the project scheduled for completion in summer 2019.
Tim Harvey, regional director for ISG, said: “Purpose-built student residential facilities play a hugely important role in the overall housing mix within our cities, and this major project signifies that Valeo has ambitious development plans across the UK.”
ISG has a growing portfolio of keynote student accommodation schemes including a £40m 675-bed scheme in central Cardiff, and a 412-bed £39m mixed-use scheme in the heart of Liverpool.
