“I could never marry you, Gracewood. The world––“ “Forgive my language, but […] fuck the world. I will change it for you if I have to.” ~ A LADY FOR A DUKE by Alexis Hall
Behold, the winner of the Trans-cendental Stories Fanart Poll on my Patreon! 🏳️‍⚧️I was so smitten by this beautiful story about love and second chances and living your truth in the face of a society that would rather not accept it. It was clever, funny, steamy, and gosh, it just ticked all my historical romance boxes. I adored it. 💕 Thank you, patrons, for your votes and your support, and I look forward to unveiling some secrets in the weeks ahead! 👀

Hi friends
Have you heard of A Lady for a Duke by Alexis Hall? I just finished it and it’s a DELIGHT.
Tumblr media
It looks like a fairly typical Regency romance novel, and in many ways it is - there’s a ball and a duke and emotional moments on top of cliffs by the sea and distasteful suitors and an older woman who is too brash for society and a barely-there uncle who is cheerfully dim and all kinds of things you would expect.
But it’s also a story about a trans woman trying to live her life and a man with PTSD trying to figure out who he wants to be, although neither of them have the language to describe themselves as such. The author specifically set out to write a historical romance with a trans heroine where her being trans is *NOT* the central conflict and I believe he succeeded admirably. Gender is a part of the story, of course, because it can’t not be when Regency England was such a strictly gendered society, but not because of the MC’s trans identity.
Anyway, I loved it and you should read it if any of the above sounds appealing to you. You should also read Hall’s other books - Boyfriend Material is probably the biggest and I love it, but Something Fabulous is laugh out loud hilarious and one of my favorite historical romances I’ve ever read.

A Lady for a Duke by Alexis Hall
goodreads
Tumblr media
When Viola Carroll was presumed dead at Waterloo she took the opportunity to live, at last, as herself. But freedom does not come without a price, and Viola paid for hers with the loss of her wealth, her title, and her closest companion, Justin de Vere, the Duke of Gracewood. Only when their families reconnect, years after the war, does Viola learn how deep that loss truly was. Shattered without her, Gracewood has retreated so far into grief that Viola barely recognises her old friend in the lonely, brooding man he has become. As Viola strives to bring Gracewood back to himself, fresh desires give new names to old feelings. Feelings that would have been impossible once and may be impossible still, but which Viola cannot deny. Even if they cost her everything, all over again.
Mod Opinion: I hadn't heard of this book before, but it sounds like it is a really sweet romance.

have you ever thought, "The Dresden Files are good, but they would be even better if they were 1000% more gay"?
have you ever thought, "Twilight sure is a book, but it would be better if Bella ( a ) realized that Edward is a weird controlling creep, ( b ) dumped him, ( c ) came out to herself as lesbian, and ( d ) went off to become a paranormal private investigator"?
boy have i got the book series for you: Kate Kane, Paranormal Private Investigator by Alexis Hall
i need more people to read these books because they're. they're so good. they have the Fantasy Kitchen Sink + excellent noir detective getting into increasingly big magical messes and romantic entanglements with a series of beautiful women of Dresden Files, but the main character is a half-faery-princess lesbian and basically the entire cast is gay.
also, i cannot stress this enough, in the main character's backstory she met a vampire in high school AP biology class, dated him for a while, during which time he tried to dump her for her own good, he tried to get a vampire kingpin to kill him because he missed her (necessitating her to show up there and plead for him), and she jumped off a cliff to get attention when she missed him, before she realized that he was insanely jealous, controlling, and creepy (such as by watching her sleep) and also that she was a lesbian, and she dumped him (but of course he continues to show up and experience vampire angst in her direction)
please. please read these books and talk about them with me. i'm begging you.
i have no stake in these books except that they are driving me insane with how good they are

“I thought I’d feel guiltier. But I just feel… full of bacon.”
“Don’t knock it. It’s a good feeling.”
- BOYFRIEND MATERIAL by Alexis Hall
I’ve been reading the sequel to this book, HUSBAND MATERIAL, aloud with my hubs, so it’s been slower going than my usual reading pace, but as these two lovely disasters are on my brain, I figured I’d put stylus to screen for one of my favorite scenes: in which Luc gets to step up and be the rock Oliver leans on after a certain ruby wedding party goes awry. And Luc’s apartment is neat…-ish. 😉

for someone who loved Red, White & Royal Blue but who is more obsessed with banter and dialogues than smut i'd recommend the London Calling series by Alexis Hall. because i wanna scream about how good it's written in terms of character growth, arguments and exploration of difficult topics. my head fucking hurts but it's so fun and enjoyable, rwrb weren't even close to the level of communication that London Calling has. and i liked rwrb (minus the unserious world it was set in). it's just.. bro, gimme me adult conversations, complicated arguments, shitty parents and turn-arounds because of delayed realisations. i wanna punch a wall because of how good the 2nd book of London Calling was. but i'm not gonna do it.
also, please, read rwrb even if you already watched the movie. Alex has a sister, and she is fucking AMAZING, and Matthew López will answer to gods for cutting her off and destroying the White House Trio 😤
