Growing in the shade of the tropical-style foliage plants of the Sunken Garden of Great Dixter, Sussex, was the rhizomatous perennial Begonia 'Little Brother Montgomery'. Though not hardy this cane-type begonia thrives when shielded from direct sunlight to prevent leaf scorch and ideally in a temperature range between 15-22°C (58-72°F).

Streams of canary yellow begonias & flamingo pink carnations lined the fading oak stables, the rising sun washing a peaceful glow over Penscombe Court. With knee-high leather riding boots protecting your feet, you pulled open the stable door and almost jumped out of your skin at the sight of an olive-skinned, dapper man, tinted shades hiding his eyes and wrapped tightly in a khaki gilet. “Good morning, babe. Didn’t frighten you, did I? Awfully sorry. Rupert said I could keep Bessie here.” Basil Baddingham beamed, blessing you with a glimpse of his dazzling pearly whites. Bessie was an Arabian horse — regal & imposing, with a striking chestnut colour and an ink black mane. “She’s so gorgeous.” You purr, running your hand over the top of Bessie’s head. “You can ride her if you want.” Bas winked towards you, surveying the apprehensive expression washed across your face. There was something so awfully compelling about Basil that meant you struggled to oppose him.

Less than twenty minutes later, you were bounding across the extensive fields of Penscombe Court, chilled wind rippling through your golden hair — exhilarated and elated. Bas rode alongside you, the smaller horse he was riding struggling to keep up with the rapid pace of Bessie. “Oh come on, Bas! Scared to race me?” You roared as you careered down the bank. Basil chuckled to himself as he patted his horse, urging it to catch up. Before it had chance, Bessie neighed thunderously, subsequently followed by a blood-curdling scream. “Hurry, boy, go!” Basil howled, patting his horse and steadying himself as they bolted down the embankment, and he jumped from the horse’s back before it had time to cease its speed. The scene that greeted him was one of inconceivable horror that he would never forget. You were sprawled across the ground, nose bloodied, arm bent in an anomalous manner & breathing shallow. “Dear God, Rupert is going to fucking kill me.” He groaned under his breath, darting over to you and kneeling at your side.

“God, babe. I’m so fucking sorry.” Basil panted, reaching out to stroke your muddied face but hesitatingly pulling away. Basil was right, Rupert was going to go ballistic, to say the least, but he had to be told. Pulling his bulky telephone from his gilet pocket, he prodded in Rupert’s number with trembling digits. It was ringing for a painstaking length of time, before Rupert answered, half-way through a chuckle. “Hello? Bas, what’s wrong?” Rupert answered, trying to make coherence from Basil’s distressed ramblings.

Dressed only in an unbuttoned, unironed white shirt, beige trousers and black wellington’s, Rupert hurtled from the majestic doors of Penscombe Court, thick mud flying from beneath his feet. He had never sprinted so fast in his life. Sprinting down the bank, he gasped — dumbfounded and horrified at your utterly mangled state. “Angel!” He almost whimpered, sinking into the mud beside you and placing a gentle kiss on your forehead. “I’m so sorry, Rupert, I-“ Basil began, stood yards away with his hand clamped over his open mouth. The look in Rupert’s eyes was one of unbridled rage. Throwing himself to his feet, he stormed over to Basil, lifting him from the ground with fistfuls of his shirt. “What the fuck were you doing?” He spat, but Basil could only splutter and gasp in a stupor. “Taking her out riding, without asking me, when you knew I wanted to? And, worse so, not fucking looking after her!” Rupert continued to roar, fury bubbling through his veins like a steaming kettle reaching boiling point. Basil’s head was hung lowly in shame, unable to provide reasonable explanation. “I’m SORRY, Rupert. I didn’t know!” Was all he could muster. Before long, Rupert was unreservedly apoplectic, howling obstreperously to his Robin, his helicopter pilot — he needed him there immediately.

Comprehending the desperate urgency in Rupert’s voice, Robin complied — the silk black helicopter whirring above, wind projecting from the blades strongly enough to almost knock Basil onto his back.

Opening your eyes was difficult, lids heavy with sleep and your head spinning drowsily. After a few moments and through narrowed vision, you took a moment to survey the surrounding scene. Tucked firmly into bed, your typically flawless golden hair was tied behind you, matted and coated in dried blood. “Good morning, angel.” Rupert whispered, leaning over from his wooden seat at your bedside and kissed your lips gently. “Hello, my love.” You groaned groggily, eyes opening wider. Your hands had numerous cannulas and monitors plunged into them, but the room was secluded and clad in orange velvet. “Where on Earth am I?” You questioned, confused panic rising through your voice.

“You’re in the best place for you. Cost a pretty penny, but I can’t deny that you’re worth it.” Rupert joked, smiling in a gentle, solemn way that you had never seen before. “But why?” You interrogated again, winching sharply as you sat up. “Fucking Bas took you riding. Bessie must’ve got frightened, and bucked you off. Pretty nasty, utterly terrifying to watch. You handled it very elegantly though, I hear.” He informed you, reaching beside him and brandishing quite possibly the most adorable teddy bear you had ever seen, and an enormous box of chocolates. “Oh, I love him!” You beamed, your usual sunshine tone filtering back into your voice.

“Now don’t scare me like that again. We have many more years to drink and fuck away together, I can’t have you falling off horses constantly.” Rupert joked riskily, but was wholeheartedly relieved when you grinned back. “Oh, stop it, Rupert. I love you.” You mumbled, eyes closing and drifting softly back to sleep. “I love you too, angel.” He replied, gently kissing your soft forehead again.

elain's flowers on the drawer

roses, begonias, and irises. I always see art of this drawer but most only ever have roses, fair cause they're the most commonly known, but what about the other two?

Begonias

one of the most common things said about elain is that she needs sunlight.. but contrarily, one of the flowers feyre drew for elain is a flower known to prefer shade! now, I don't live inside sjm's head, maybe it's just a flower she personally likes but, c'mon such a specific flower has to serve some sort of purpose?

Irises

this bit was especially fascinating cause we know that elain is a seer and has been speculated to be able to see through the realms like mystics. and hope, god the only thing we've seen elain hope for with all her heart was for her love to trump the mating bond... are we going to see that coming true in her book?

lastly, Roses

as always roses are the beacon of all things love in literature. I truly think elain's book is going to be fighting for her love to supersede the mate bond. the fact that her crush is associated with a place called rosehall is just a fun add on.

I see the argument that elain's drawer painting does not indicate an elriel ending, but hear me out! we have:

elain - flowers of love and hope that prefer shade - spymaster who yearns for love in the shadows

maybe I'm reaching, maybe I'm not but I think the drawer was a beautiful set up for the future books. everything about the three sisters and the bat boys are so perfectly tied together and balanced and poetic. god I just love analyzing these little details in the books!

First let's talk about the bouquet with begonia, carnations, anemones and snowdrops

Meanings + why these flowers were chosen: Begonia, because it symbolizes caution and misfortune, and she not only meets with terrible misfortune but has an overwhelming and lifelong fear of causing things to go wrong, and she’s very cautious and on edge because of it. Carnations can symbolize unconditional love, including a mother’s love, which is accurate to her in a major way, but also painfully ironic. Anemones have been associated with fragility and with bad luck, a combination that cuts to the core of her internal troubles, as she grew up fearing she was basically cursed to break the things around her and whatever and whomever she valued, and she never grew out of it. They’re also associated with anticipation and new motherhood, and she’s always anticipating bad things, in particular bad things that could happen to her child. Snowdrops suit her because of their natural association with the cold, since she has ice magic. Description: The thought process that everything around her was more fragile for her being there impacted her tangibly, corrupting the joy she would have had, and it turned her a little too brittle inside to keep things together after all. The mistakes she made are ones she made out of her fear, not despite it, and the demands she made to try and drive her family’s story a way she can accept were shortsighted attempts clawing at an incomplete picture. In-story, this whole deal with fragility is symbolized by her ice magic, which isn’t very powerful but is notable nonetheless—not so much an impressive ability as her turning something unbreakable (liquid water) into something easily breakable. She’s a mother of two who can only bring herself to consistently love one of them, and in a severely questionable parenting tactic on behalf of her beloved child, she parentified the other one. Which ultimately did keep her preferred child safe, in a way, but certainly not in a way that let her feel secure about it, partly because not only would her unfavorite sacrifice their life for the other’s, but vice versa; that’s what she earned, though, her children outgrowing her both in love and in resilience.

Now let's talk about the White Crocuses

Meaning and why flower was chosen: a) white crocuses symbolize grief and specifically the grief she has for her mom’s death and b) the god that she creates manifests as a tree of black tendrils and flowering crocuses Description: She starts out as a marketing manager who is doing her best. She’s living well and has a good friend, but her days are pretty tedious and her dad sucks. But then things get rough at her work and a lot of bad things happen and her friend dies, so she drives out of the country to try and clear her head, but instead succeeds at getting kidnapped by the worst hostage takers ever, who are also fugitives and followers of an illegal god, and they then become a weird, kind of messed up found family for her. That ends up with her getting in trouble with the law, but she is eventually released. The whole situation inspires her to try and create a god that won’t be absolutely horrible like all of the other gods in the world, so with the help of her aforementioned not-so-great dad and the ex-cop that once arrested her, she creates a god of martyrs! She briefly gets possessed (I guess that’s how I’d put it?) by said god, so prophet moment for the win! Miscellaneous facts: she’s trans, has a nice singing voice, and can successfully skip rocks

Bubbly Milkshake would cover her face since she would be blushing a lot

Burnt Caramel would probably purify himself but then give you a pat on the head

Rex Cookie would say thanks and not act like she’s happy but her tail would be wagging so she kinda gives herself away

Sugary Jello will be giggling a lot and asking how did she taste. Don’t worry she’s a bit of a freak at times

Cinnamon Spider is grinning like a idiot and will probably ignore any illegal stuff you do for a bit

Red Fruit will act confident but will internally be questing if your the one and wether or not he should introduce you to his grandma

Blackberry Shade is chuckling and then peppering your face with kisses, she has to one up you.

Powdered Basil is softy smiling and giving you a kiss in return… you don’t know how much that means to him

Simmering Onion won’t notice you kissed him until a few minutes later, after that he’ll be real embarrassed

Grilled Tomato is smiling and giving you a big old hug, you probably both fall after she tried to lift you up

Bubbling Oil smiles at you and will ask if she can kiss you back, if you say yes then she will kiss you back, leaving you with a warm and joyful feeling

Adele Penguin doesn’t like kisses but hugs are always appreciated since they’re are super cuddly!

Wild Basil is tricky, I mean if you kissed him I think he would be shocked and either A- keep you around at all times or B (and what most likely will happen) he will shove you away and run off.

Barbecue "Dragon" will try to not show he’s blushing by acting high and mighty and that he let you kiss him

Gran-Berry she will only accept either forehead or cheek kisses due to her age but she will be very happy

Minty Snail is stuttering a lot but will ultimately hug you

Dark Apple he will punch you if you kissed him. No kisses for him. But maybe a fist bump or a side hug will work

Tabby Cat gets no kisses, but they will sleep on your lap, not as a sign of affection but because they are very eppy

Pink Mantis will be giggling and writing you lots of love letters

Blushing Snail won’t accept kisses, they will basically shrink down into their cloak if you do

Emperor Caterpillar will give you a lazy grin and offer a date to you

Peach Novius will try to complement you but will be stuttering to much

Leaf Sheep Slug would be blushing if he didn’t have to worry about a crazy ex, so instead of being all giddy he’s going to probably protect you from Blazing Spice

Adenosine Cookie is certainly interesting. The fact you got close to them is crazy in the first place, and since their face is hidden it would be in their hand that got kisses, which is more impressive so honestly you’d probably get a compliment before they leave, they are the type to commit to stuff

Water Cookie is a minor so no kisses, but a hug would be good

Salt Water is a minor so no kisses but a high five will do

Sugar Water is a minor so no kisses and nothing else.

Snake Skin will chuckle and give you some stollen money after he quickly flirts with you

Weeping Begonia will flirt with you while sneakily stealing stuff from you. Him giving it back or not is the true question

Purple Mold will be a little confused but will ultimately be super chill with it

White Flower won’t have much of a reaction but hopefully you didn’t kiss her on the lips, she has a parasite that wouldn’t mind switching bodies

Blazing Spice would be flattered that you’d kiss him but unfortunately his heart belongs to another… which might be a good thing for you since he’s a bit crazy

Finally got this guy to a place where I'm happy with it! It's a tattoo design (upper arm / shoulder cap) that I can't wait to see interpreted by their artist! I liked both the full color and black and grey so here they are. I wanted to keep the shading relatively minimal which was an interesting challenge!

hiya! i work in/manage a greenhouse too (maybe half the size of yours i think?) i was wondering if you had any favorite basket or planter combos you made up this year!

i did a few combos i really loved- antique double salmon geranium with a fern and baby tears pilea

peachy keen verbena, double orange superbells, salmon sunpatiens, vista bubblegum petunia, and silver falls dichondra

really im just a sucker for everything in the peach/salmon/coral/pinks

Yeah!! It's hard to remember to take pictures but this year my favorites have been pinks-blue-yellow but also purples with silver.

In total I designed uhhhhh ~350 cone hanging baskets, ~450 planters of varying sizes, 140 big coco fiber baskets, and 50 big moss baskets. Most of those had 10 of each design. So??? Almost 1000 different designs.

So it is tough to choose a favorite lol or remember which was which.

I really like Salvia Icon Blue as a central thriller, then Petunia Miss Marvelous and Dekko Lavender Eye and Lobularia Stream Lavender as fillers, plus Dichondra.

Also I used Big Eeze Geraniums with Dekko petunias again for the big combos and that worked very nicely! Dekkos are a little smaller so resemble Callies but are more vigorous and less aphid-prone. A combo of those with trailing coleus fills in a huge basket well. Also Diamond frost as a filler. Lysimachia sunburst as a trailer.

Bridal Veil and swedish ivy as shade trailers! Spider plants as well! We have stock plants of all three and they grow super wonderfully. For smaller planters, wire vine, though I didn't use much this year.

And my classic and best selling mix is just. Dragonwing begonia, mixed seed impatiens, and ipomea or trailing coleus. I've found that most customers prioritize lots of colors and flowers over anything else in terms of planter design so impatiens mixes are a big seller even though they're pretty basic

Also, I went heavy on the double impatiens this year. I hate them so much they are so messy and dramatic once it gets hot in the greenhouse but they grow fast and fill in so nicely.

If I could get begonias to grow quickly enough, I'd use them, because I feel like they're the real mvp of summer baskets for longevity but unfortunately, I'm growing for looking good pre-Mother's Day. Anything but dragonwings just can't compete in a mixed basket in early spring.

AHHHHH FLOWERS !! I’m very sorry I love associating characters with flowers 😭

For Lola my literal queen she reminds me of roses because roses just give off that certain fancy / elegant vibe and that is Lola in some aspects ! My girl knows how to dress for occasion after a few lessons from Abbie 😌 as for Lola’s favourite flower I believe it would be roses also, though the more darker shades of them.

Abbie reminds me of a wildflower (this just made me realise that the title of this fic won’t make proper sense until the end of the story, oh well 🤷‍♀️) Abbie is a wild child through and through! She is rebellious and doesn’t follow her peers just like how a wildflower grows in the wild rather than being intentionally seeded or planted ! For the flower she likes I’d say daisies, I can see her lying in the grass and making daisy chains

Avery reminds me of amaryllis as they symbolise pride and Avery holds a lot of pride for herself especially when it comes to ballet. Though the flower that Avery would like would be tulips mainly just because she likes the colours of them, though she comes to learn later in life that they symbolise passion which makes her favour them even more.

Raymond reminds me so so much of Ivy (not sure if this counts as a flower) as they symbolise affection and friendship which is his specialty in my opinion. Avery is the luckiest person ever to have him in her life when he first appears in the story! Ray would like daffodils because they remind him of brightness and happiness!

Lilith gives me such begonias vibes as they just match her vibe and symbolise ‘to be aware’ and oh trust me you do want to be beware of her, she’s not somebody you want to have on your bad side. For flowers that Lilith likes I fear she likes any flowers that are dead and wilted, they very much satisfy her.

🌱 - most difficult plant?

Begonias. Hands down, begonias. Doesn't matter what kind, if I'm keeping it as a houseplant or if it's outside in a bed, if it's in the sun or the shade, how often I water, or what I feed it. I simply can't get the hang of begonias and have managed to kill almost every single one I've planted. Which is a real bummer because I love begonias! I will crack the begonia code of these days (and probably kill a few more in the process, sorry begonias!).
