Tradition and novelty collide at UPIS Fair 2025 activities
The second and third days of the UPIS Fair 2025 on February 26 and 27 saw the return of the face-to-face Alternative Classroom Learning Experience (ACLE) with other well-loved activities, namely the Treasure Hunt and Tagis Talino, alongside the brand-new Skit Competition taking the stage. Held as part of the school's annual fair, these events brought together students from different grade levels to participate in both educational and recreational activities.
SKIT COMPETITION
Held on Day 2 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the 7-12 Narra Function Hall, the Skit Competition, titled “TALA-Salitaan,” put on full display the UPIS students’ creativity and collaboration expertise.
Four groups of students from various grade levels competed by creating a 5-minute skit based on the given prompt, “Bilang mag-aaral ng UPIS, ano ang nagbibigay-alab sa iyong puso? (As a UPIS student, what ignites your heart?)”. Each group was coached by two students from Grades 11 and 12, while the actors consisted of students from Grades 3 to 10. They independently coordinated their schedules, practice sessions, props, and costumes.
The winning group included the following students: actors Nathaniel Dominic Angeles, Gabriel Uychoco, Amane Jibril Panao, Elin Danielle Lim, Juno Sebastian Valencia, Amara Jade Mariano, and coaches Samantha Anika Dimal and Dedric Shawn Bejo. Their skit revolved around various archetypes of UPIS students who worked through conflict despite their differences.
Performances were judged based on the criteria: 35% for message, 30% for flow of performance, 15% for adherence to rules and mechanics, 10% for creativity, and 10% for audience impact.
According to the UPIS Pamunuan ng Kamag-Aral 7-12 (PKA), the Skit Competition was created in order to be a socially creative outlet for various students from grades 3-12—an opportunity for elementary and high school students to collaborate. Although the final roster of participants only came from grades 5-12, the organizers observed that “those who were able to join seemed to have created a bond from working on the competition.”
TREASURE HUNT
The Treasure Hunt, titled “KALIMAYO,” was present this year for Days 2 and 3 of the fair. In the previous year, the activity was listed in the activity lineup but was ultimately canceled after the UPIS Fair was revised to fit a one-day schedule.
KALIMAYO was conducted for Grades 3 to 6 students on Day 2 and Grades 7 to 12 students on Day 3. Each group had 45 minutes to finish mini-games across different “islands” or destinations in the 3-6 Building. Challenges include pinning a sail, walking blindfolded through a minefield, deciphering a secret emoji code, solving a jigsaw puzzle, completing a team relay, and navigating an obstacle course.
When asked about the problems encountered in organizing and implementing the event, PKA 7-12 shared that PKA 3-12 faced two major challenges. First, they were unfamiliar with executing the event, as Treasure Hunt was a newly implemented activity. Second, sign-ups for another event were happening simultaneously, creating logistical challenges. Despite these hurdles, the Treasure Hunt pushed through to the delight of the organizers and participants.
ACLE
This year’s ACLE, dubbed “SULO,” featured 24 simultaneous sessions that were held from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. on Day 2. The sessions were spread out in the following locations: classrooms and quadrangles in the UPIS 3-6 and 7-12 buildings, 3-6 Bulwagan, 7-12 Gymnasium, and the National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (NISMED) in UP Diliman.
Around half of this year's ACLE speakers were current UPIS students, with the majority coming from grades 11 and 12. These include Princess Sharmaine Callueng (Grade 11), who facilitated the 3-6 Drawing and Painting session, and Yesue Timothy Apon and Alexandra Sophia Blasi (Grade 12), who were the speakers for the 7-12 3-D Printing session. Public Speaking—one session for grades 3-6 and another for 7-8—was led by Justice Christian Aguinaldo (Grade 11 student) and Rachelle Marie Bueno (Grade 12 student), respectively.
“Our Ates and Kuya[s] from Senior High School have high potential discussing various topics that are easily relatable to UPIS students all throughout,” explained members of the PKA 7-12. The council recommended that the system of tapping UPIS students as ACLE speakers be adapted in the following years, citing more efficient coordination as a key benefit. The PKA added that the “peer-to-peer approach” also had a beneficial effect on the students’ participation in the session.
Other changes to this year’s ACLE included the shift to face-to-face sessions, which, according to the officers, resulted in a lack of room assignments or venues per session and various scheduling issues. Apart from this, the session duration was extended to two hours and the topics themselves were sourced from the students. However, the PKA revealed that extending the session duration was in favor of ACLE’s learning format. Additionally, they shared that the feedback they received was encouraging, stating that “students express[ed] that this year's ACLE was more enjoyable and interactive since the topics chosen also came from the students.”
The K-2 also held their own ACLE sessions titled “ISKULAY.” According to Teacher Pam Vinoya, head of the K-2 ACLE activities, the workshops “were selected to enhance students' skills in preparation for [K-2’s] upcoming year-end presentation, a play that will occur this May.”
The K-2 department invited professors and students from the UP College of Arts and Letters (Department of Speech Communication and Theatre Arts) to lead the workshops. Teacher Pam stated that “[the speakers’] expertise could help boost [the] students’ confidence in their performance for the upcoming play.”
TAGIS TALINO
TAGIS TALINO, organized by the Social Studies Department and the Kilusang Araling Panlipunan, took place on Day 3 at UPIS 7-12 Rm 121, where the 3-6 division ran from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. and the 7-12 division from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.
The event concluded with Team 1 and Team B emerging as victors in the 3-6 division and the 7-12 division, respectively. Team 1 triumphed in the Tagis Talino 3-6 division, with members Oscar William Antonio, Rowan Cruz, Ilenea Amihan Baltazar, and Helina Elise Bautista. Meanwhile, in the high school division, Team B won with a whopping total of 25 points. The members of the said group are the following: Olivia Marie Bermudez, Patrick Bantigue, Princess Nina Espino, Cassaundra Allanne Bacolod, and Princess Sharmaine Callueng. All participating teams were composed of students from different grade levels.
The competition consisted of three rounds: Easy, Medium, and Hard, with questions focused on Filipino culture, history, and current events. The Easy round included 10 questions, each worth 1 point, with contestants given 15 seconds to answer. This was followed by the Medium round, which featured 7 questions valued at 2 points each, with a 20-second time limit. Lastly, the Hard round contained 5 questions, with 3 points awarded per correct answer and a 30-second time frame. This format was kept for both the 3-6 and 7-12 divisions.

Bejo had a look of regret on his visage. "I didn't know what got over me-I'm sorry " The untriggered werewolf didn't know. "I thought he was going to do something to you." Bejo admitted quietly. "I should have gotten the manager." Bejo rubbed the back of his neck feeling embarrassed.
Maybe there's a reason why Bejo didn't have more than one ex in his life. There was always his inherent anger the ebbs and flows in him like a river. Most weeks he could keep it in but when that stupid moon comes out, he feels it his veins. Again his longest term partners were grief and revenge, and Bejo knew they would be with him for a while.
Still his need to get involved was adamant with peyton. He couldn't clock why- was it her inner strength or was it her dedication to her beliefs. Bejo honestly didn't know. Bejo couldn't clock it but he wanted her, even if everyone else deserves it, to be free from his cycle of grief and revenge.
There was an intense look as he saw the eyelash on her face. He tried his best not to kick paul in his gut and instead focus on her. "Hold still." He said in a gentler tone. He leaned in closer just enough for his face to be close but not too close. The napkin on her face as he took the stray eyelash. "There much better."
Bejo looked her in the eyes and then the lips.Was she always so beautiful.His slender fingers gently over her jawline before stopping at the chin. His own heart beating in his chest. It would have been so easy to do it, just to know that feeling. But instead, he pulled away. It would have been hypocritical for him to do. And he didn't deserve it anyway.
Instead he slowly pulled away, the stoicism returned as if the gentle Bejo never existed. There was a look as he took out his wallet. "How much do you need?" He asked without thinking.
"thanks, paul..." she gave him her best attempt at a smile, her hand reaching out to set the man's drink in front of him on the counter, although when she went to pull her hand back and move on to the next paul's hand wrapped around her wrist. "paul, let go, i'll get you another drink once you finish this one." she was used to this, he was a regular who always got way too handsy after a few drinks but he ended up always tipping pretty well, so as long as she kept her cool, she could see this being worth it.
her best attempt at a smile then turned into a raised brow and smirk, playing the role of a flirty bartender was never her proudest moment but a girl had to do what so needed sometimes. not a minute went by did someone who she knew, someone she had clocked watching her earlier, someone who she had hoped would stay out of it-- someone in the oea. he was different from the others who were assigned to her they treated her like she was a means to an end, a tool to be used and shoved in a toolbox when the job was done. he was softer in his approach-- at least sometimes. "i have this you don't ha--"
her jaw dropped, seeing the punch took her by surprise. "what the fuck! now i won't be getting that tip." the reason for putting up with handsy drunks and dickheads who flirt too much was a no brainer for her, her daughter. she would do anything for her. "did you really have to do that?"

Trap Tropical
Es un genero que se relaciona con el cantante canario Bejo. Creo su propio estilo con unas bases muy tropicales y unas letras muy melodicas aunque con poco sentido. Este trapero tiene la habilidad de crear ritmos que quedan en tu cabeza al instante, por no comentar la gran cantidad de palabras que inventa y dan gran sintonia a sus canciones. Puede llegar a ser un tanto infantil por algunas letras pero es uno de los subgeneros que mas Flow tiene.

Insight: Marbella (Alvaro Tobar - Third Culture)
The city of Marbella, nestled halfway down Spain’s Costa del Sol, is famous for being one of Europe’s most popular resort destinations, providing sun, sea, sand and cerveza to a large seasonal flow of wealthy foreign visitors. What it hasn’t generally been famous for is its music scene. Fortunately, Marbella’s Third Culture collective is flipping that impression on its head.
Comprised of producers, performers, promoters, DJs and a range of other creatives, Third Culture’s aim is to nurture a distinct, organic music scene that can make its mark beyond Marbella and compete with the big foreign acts that tour the region. By supporting some of Spain’s most exciting emerging artists, it seems they are starting to succeed. We got in touch with Alvaro Tobar, Third Culture’s ‘cultural agitator’, to find out why the Spanish hip-hop scene is finally fulfilling its potential, and how Marbella’s artists are providing alternative routes for itexpansion…

In ten words or less, how would you describe where you live?
A melting pot of international cultures with a unique lifestyle.
What got you involved in the local music scene, and what is your role within it?
What got me involved in the ‘scene’ was pretty much wanting to create one, a real one. We’ve had amazing venues & international superstars performing here for years – singers, DJs, rappers, etc – but that only happens in summer with the inflow of tourists. Other than that there’s no actual scene in the foundations. The venues, promoters, audience, they all just follow and copy each other based on what makes money. Nobody really cares about the actual music, its culture or what it’s spawning in the younger generations that soak it all up, in my eyes there’s a lot of raw talent here that keeps getting bypassed.
People just need inspiration, a sense of belonging to something bigger, let them know what they do is appreciated because it’s contagious, it spreads a message, it allows people to drop their fears, judgements, etc and to go for it, whatever it may be. It will push the next person to go out and do what they love, when you have a lot of people doing that, you have a healthy scene, a community and that’s when amazing things begin to happen.
I recently found out that the city of Atlanta (without the metropolitan area) has a smaller population than the city of Málaga which is the closest capital to Marbella. Now think about trap and all the music that has come out of the city of Atlanta in the past years that has shaped the sound of hip-hop and even pop music in the entire world: Outkast, T.I., Gucci Mane, Migos, Young Thug, 21 Savage, the list is endless. That is all because of the scene they had there, it’s been thriving for decades, people push one another to create and support each other, that’s when things flourish.
I started Third Culture as a monthly event that allowed all the creators here to gather in a relaxed atmosphere and experience something new; music (DJs and concerts), art, fashion, etc. A place to praise open-mindedness and creativity, something they couldn’t experience anywhere else locally and that actually made them feel like they were somewhere else, in an underground venue of a big city or metropolis for example. I’ve been told by people at our events that they feel like they’re in Shoreditch in London, or in Soho in NY, etc, anything but Marbella and that’s the biggest compliment.
My role within it is always through Third Culture. There I’m an MC, DJ, promoter, booking agent, designer, I do it all, so I wouldn’t really know what to call it. Recently in an interview with a local TV [station] they called me a ‘cultural agitator’ for the city, and I’m not mad at that, I’m here to shake the shit up until people realise, or at least until the right people do.
What are the dominant music styles in both Marbella and Spain as a whole, are there any exciting new music trends currently emerging?
In Spain the explosion in the modern hip-hop/trap scene has been insane, we’ve had hip-hop here for decades but it has always been marginalised and pushed aside, I think because it was never daring enough, it was just there to fulfil the ‘rap in Spain’ category. It never went mainstream aside from 2 or 3 acts unlike the UK or France that had a full scene with their own distinctive sound, but what’s happened here in the past 3-5 years is crazy. The level of artistry has gone through the roof, not only the acts and their music, but also visuals, merchandise, even marketing strategies, you see some very unique proposals that are already giving American & foreign artists huge competition, a lot of these Spanish acts have better numbers than established acts in the US (sales, YouTube views, followers, etc). This is mostly because Spanish acts are finally tapping majorly into Central and South America which are HUGE markets for them.
Marbella is different because this place is a bubble that is always ruled by international influence before Spanish influence. The ‘scene’ here is always looking at the international charts, but it’s better than ever in my opinion because every single venue now has at least one night a week dedicated to hip-hop, trap & urban beats, most of them with huge live performances. It’s definitely exciting to see how this is all developing considering there are more venues every year which allow for many more opportunities for the scene to grow and keep establishing itself.
Who are the key local acts we should be listening to right now?
Sandro Jeeawock: local producer who has collaborated with big names in Spain like Pimp Flaco, Kinder Malo and Dellafuente. Imagine if Atlanta’s 808 culture got all loved up and had a night of debauchery with the early Neptunes’ sound… His debut album Golden Boy was released early this summer via Ocean Club which he presented in a set at this year’s Sonar Festival. He will be back in BCN on the 26th of August playing in TRILL. Don’t miss it.
GXNZX: Picture a mysterious bearded cavalier majestically riding a Roland SP-404. Now you can listen to him. Lo-fi expert, dope sample choppa, if he gets on some pads, keep an extinguisher close. Shit will burn.
Olarte: A staple in the local scene, he has one of the most ample ’90s hip-hop libraries I’ve come across and you can tell on his production, the man is dipped in jazz (literally he has portraits of jazz greats tattooed all over his body) and his drums will make your neck snap, a deadly combo.
Rjay: In my opinion, the best male vocalist round these ends, London bred, Marbella based, with a great knack for songwriting. From trap to R&B, give him any beat and hell have a solid track in no time.
K:Miss: Powerful female vocalist, lead singer of soul band ‘Soulbelle’, she hasn’t left any genre untouched: house, jazz, rock & roll, and she keeps going. Her upcoming material with a modern hip-hop twist to it will definitely make heads turn.
Space Hammu: The out of town homies, hailing from the east-side of Malaga, this collective of MCs & producers is about to shake the scene in spain: Delaossa, Raggio & Carrion are 3 of the livest spitters I’ve heard come out the south, JMoods could flip a tank with his beats and Kas.Rules keeps it all sounding tight & crisp. Its a rap dream team and we can only help them push further, although they don’t need it.
What’s the live music scene/nightlife like in Marbella?
The majority of it is based in upmarket clubs, VIP bottles, etc, so whatever genre it’s always going to be somewhat commercial, but the appearances get bigger every year. So far the biggest acts we’ve had this year are: Lil Wayne, Tory Lanez, Tyga, Trey Songz, French Montana, Ja Rule, Fat Joe, etc. There’s also a very solid UK sounds scene, grime, garage, DnB, etc: Craig David, Tinie Tempah, J Hus, Giggs, Krept & Konan, Kano, So Solid Crew, DJ Luck & MC Neat, DJ EZ, etc, they’ve all been here this season. Now because of a sudden inflow of French tourism you also see huge names from the French scene stop by like Booba or Maitre Gims.
Other than that you can see full concerts in places like Starlite (Elton John, Ben Harper, etc.), Puente Romano Hotel for most of the oldies (George Benson, Billy Ocean, Chaka Khan, etc) or the brew pub La Catarina, the home of all the Third Culture events for the past two years where we’ve had the biggest names from the Spanish scene, like Bejo, BNMP, Nathy Peluso, Fanso, Jesse Baez & the list goes on.
For anyone visiting, what should they see and what should they eat and drink?
Marbella’s Old Town is beautiful with loads of tapas bars and great restaurants. If you want high end restaurants the square in Puente Romano has pretty much anything you could ask for. If you’re looking for something cheap & cheerful with a good vibe, I would definitely recommend Bao Garden, a relaxed hang-out spot with awesome Asian street food. Seafood here is a must, there’s plenty chiringuitos with espetos de sardinas, boquerones, pil-pil and all that good stuff.
The whole summer lifestyle here is what beomes the biggest sight if you ask me, but if you like the outdoors, the Paseo Maritimo that joins Marbella centre with Puerto Banus is an amazing walk by the beach, especially during sunset. Hike up La Concha mountain whenever it’s not too hot for the best views of the whole coast. El Chorro, Tarifa, El Palmar are also beautiful nature spots that are very close by.
What one song, past or present, sums up Marbella best?
If I had to chose a present track it would probably be Travis Scott’s ‘Butterfly Effect’ because the ambience of the track matches the setting, plus people here love to stunt. A lot of people come here JUST to stunt. You see them on Facebook working their butts off the rest of the year, looking all focused and then they come here to wile out & have fun, ‘for this life they cannot change’.
What are the biggest challenges faced by musicians in Marbella right now?
Without a doubt having work all year round, it becomes very alive in the holiday season, and some opportunities and openings arise, but after there’s simply not enough audience, so it’s down to the artists to move around and try find gigs. Other than that, during the holiday season most big venues have very very limited availability if any at all as they have most of their resident acts, DJs, etc, closed months in advance, there it’s simply a matter of having good connections and a good product.
