Why Every Saudi Business Needs a Mobile App Integration Strategy
Now mobile apps have become an indispensable tool for businesses across the globe, and Saudi Arabia is no exception. As more consumers turn to mobile devices for their shopping, communication, and entertainment needs, businesses must meet these demands by offering mobile apps that are functional and integrated seamlessly with other systems. This is where a mobile app integration strategy comes into play. Let’s delve into why such a strategy is crucial for every Saudi business.
The Increasing Significance of Mobile Apps in Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia has seen a significant surge in mobile app usage, driven by a tech-savvy population and increasing smartphone penetration. From e-commerce to banking, customers expect businesses to offer mobile solutions that are intuitive and efficient. However, simply having a mobile app is no longer enough. To stay competitive, businesses must ensure their apps are integrated with other platforms and services to deliver a seamless user experience.
What is Mobile App Integration?
Mobile app integration involves connecting a mobile application with various external systems, such as databases, cloud services, and other software applications. This integration ensures that the app can communicate with these systems in real time, providing users with up-to-date information and a cohesive experience across multiple touchpoints.
Why is Mobile App Integration Crucial for Saudi Businesses?
Enhancing User Experience
User experience (UX) plays a pivotal role in determining the success of any mobile application. When an app is well-integrated, users can effortlessly navigate through its features, access the information they need, and perform actions such as making purchases or booking services without any hiccups. For Saudi businesses, providing a superior user experience is key to retaining customers and encouraging repeat business.
Streamlining Operations
Mobile app integration isn’t just about the front-end user experience; it also has significant benefits on the backend. By integrating mobile apps with internal systems such as inventory management, CRM, and payment gateways, businesses can streamline their operations. This integration reduces manual processes, minimizes errors, and ensures that all parts of the business are working in sync.
Driving Business Growth
A well-integrated mobile app can be a powerful driver of business growth. Integration empowers businesses to swiftly introduce new features and services, adapt to shifting market demands, and scale their operations effectively. For example, integrating a mobile app with a loyalty program can help increase customer engagement, while integration with analytics tools can provide valuable insights into user behavior, helping businesses make data-driven decisions.
Key Components of a Mobile App Integration Strategy
API Integration
At the heart of mobile app integration lies API (Application Programming Interface) integration. APIs facilitate communication between different software applications, ensuring seamless data exchange. For Saudi businesses, integrating APIs is crucial for creating a connected ecosystem where various services work together harmoniously, enhancing both functionality and user experience.
Cloud-Based Integration
Cloud-based integration solutions provide scalability, flexibility, and cost-efficiency, making them an appealing choice for businesses in Saudi Arabia. By leveraging the cloud, businesses can easily scale their operations, reduce costs, and enhance the reliability of their mobile apps. Cloud technology also simplifies the integration process, allowing businesses to connect their mobile apps with other systems without the need for complex infrastructure.
Security and Compliance
In Saudi Arabia, businesses must adhere to strict data protection regulations. Ensuring that a mobile app integration strategy complies with these regulations is essential. This involves implementing robust security measures, such as encryption and authentication, to protect user data and prevent unauthorized access.
Challenges in Mobile App Integration
Despite its benefits, mobile app integration can present several challenges. These may include technical difficulties, such as compatibility issues between different systems, and the complexity of managing multiple integrations. Additionally, businesses may face challenges in ensuring that their integration strategy is scalable and future-proof, capable of accommodating new technologies and evolving business needs.
Overcoming Integration Challenges
To overcome these challenges, businesses should start by developing a clear integration plan that outlines their goals, the systems that need to be integrated, and the expected outcomes. It’s also important to choose the right technology and partners for the integration process. Working with experienced integration partners who understand the unique needs of Saudi businesses can help ensure a successful outcome.
The Future of Mobile App Integration in Saudi Arabia
As Saudi Arabia continues to embrace digital transformation, the importance of mobile app integration will only grow. Emerging trends such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and the Internet of Things (IoT) are set to revolutionize the way businesses integrate their mobile apps. By staying ahead of these trends and continuously updating their integration strategies, Saudi businesses can maintain a competitive edge in the market.
Choosing the Right Integration Partner
When selecting an integration partner, businesses should consider several factors. Experience in the Saudi market is essential, as is expertise in the relevant technologies. Businesses should seek out partners with a proven history of successful integrations and the capability to offer continuous support and maintenance.
Conclusion
In today’s digital landscape, a mobile app integration strategy is not just an option—it’s a necessity for Saudi businesses. By integrating their mobile apps with other systems, businesses can enhance user experience, streamline operations, and drive growth. As the industry evolves, staying ahead of integration trends and working with the right partners will be key to long-term success.

The Benefits of AI Chatbots for Business Communication
In today's fast-paced digital landscape, effective communication is crucial for businesses aiming to enhance customer satisfaction and streamline operations. AI chatbots have emerged as a transformative tool, offering numerous benefits that can significantly improve how companies interact with their customers. This article explores the key advantages of implementing AI chatbots in business communication.

24/7 Availability
One of the most significant benefits of AI chatbots is their ability to provide round-the-clock support. Unlike human agents, chatbots do not require breaks or time off, making them available to assist customers at any hour. This constant availability ensures that businesses can cater to global audiences across different time zones, enhancing customer satisfaction and trust. Customers appreciate the instant responses they receive, regardless of when they reach out, which can lead to improved loyalty and retention.
Cost Efficiency
AI chatbots can dramatically reduce operational costs for businesses. By automating routine tasks such as answering frequently asked questions, scheduling appointments, and processing orders, chatbots free up human agents to focus on more complex issues that require personal attention. This not only enhances productivity but also minimizes the need for a large customer support team, leading to significant savings in labor costs. According to research, businesses can save billions annually by integrating chatbots into their operations.
Enhanced Customer Engagement
AI chatbots excel at engaging customers in real-time conversations. They can provide personalized experiences by analyzing user data and preferences, allowing them to recommend products or services that align with individual needs. This level of engagement fosters a deeper connection between the brand and its customers, encouraging repeat business and enhancing overall customer satisfaction.
Instant Responses and Reduced Wait Times
Customers today expect quick responses to their inquiries. AI chatbots can deliver instant answers, significantly reducing wait times compared to traditional customer service methods. This efficiency not only improves the customer experience but also helps businesses manage high volumes of inquiries without overwhelming their support teams. By providing immediate assistance, chatbots enhance overall service levels and customer satisfaction.
Lead Generation and Sales Support

AI chatbots are not just limited to customer support; they also play a crucial role in lead generation and sales. By engaging website visitors in real-time, chatbots can qualify leads, answer pre-sales questions, and guide users through the purchasing process. This proactive approach can lead to higher conversion rates and increased revenue for businesses.
Data Collection and Insights
AI chatbots can gather valuable data about customer interactions, preferences, and behaviors. This information can be analyzed to gain insights into customer needs and trends, allowing businesses to make data-driven decisions. Understanding customer preferences can help companies tailor their offerings, improve marketing strategies, and enhance overall service delivery.
Scalability
As businesses grow, so do their customer service needs. AI chatbots provide a scalable solution that can handle an increasing volume of customer inquiries without the need for significant additional resources. This scalability allows businesses to maintain high service levels even during peak times, ensuring that customer satisfaction remains a priority.
Conclusion
ItsBot’s AI chatbots have revolutionized business communication by providing 24/7 support, enhancing customer engagement, and reducing operational costs. Their ability to deliver instant responses, generate leads, and gather valuable insights makes them an indispensable tool for modern businesses. As companies continue to embrace digital transformation, integrating AI chatbots into their customer communication strategies will be crucial for staying competitive and meeting the evolving expectations of consumers. Canada shouldn’t retaliate with its US tariffs

Picks and Shovels is a new, standalone technothriller starring Marty Hench, my two-fisted, hard-fighting, tech-scam-busting forensic accountant. You can pre-order it on my latest Kickstarter, which features a brilliant audiobook read by Wil Wheaton.
Five years ago, Trump touted his "big, beautiful" replacement for NAFTA, the "free trade agreement" between the US, Mexico and Canada. Trump's NAFTA-2 was called the USMCA (US-Mexico-Canada Agreement) and it was pretty similar to NAFTA, to be honest.
That tells you a couple things: first, NAFTA was, broadly speaking a good thing for Trump and the ultra-wealthy donors who backed him (and got far richer as a result). That's why he kept it intact. NAFTA and USMCA are, at root, a way to make rich people richer by making poorer people poorer. Trump's base hated NAFTA because they (correctly) believed that it was being used to erode wages by chasing cheaper labor and more lax environmental controls in other countries. Neither NAFTA nor USMCA have any stipulations requiring exported goods to be manufactured by unionized workers, or in factories with robust environmental and workplace safety rules.
The point of NAFTA/USMCA is to goose profits by despoiling the environment, maiming workers, stealing their wages, paying them less, all while poisoning the Earth. Trump's "new" NAFTA was just the old NAFTA with some largely cosmetic changes so that Trump's base could be (temporarily) fooled into thinking Trump was righting the historic wrong of NAFTA.
However, there was one part of USMCA that marked a huge departure from NAFTA: the "IP" chapter. USCMA bound Canada and Mexico to implementing brutal new IP laws. For example, Mexico was forced to pass an anti-circumvention law that makes it a crime to tamper with "digital locks." This means that Mexican mechanics can't bypass the locks US car companies use to lock-out third party repair. Mexican farmers can't fix their own tractors. And, of course, Mexican software developers can't make alternative app stores for games consoles and mobile devices – they must sell their software through US Big Tech companies that take 30% of every sale:
https://pluralistic.net/2020/09/09/free-sample/#que-viva
Shamefully, Canada had already capitulated to most of these demands. Two Canadian Conservative Party politicians, Tony Clement and James Moore, had sold the country out in 2012, throwing away 6,138 negative responses to a consultation on a new DRM law (on the grounds that they were "babyish" views of "radical extremists"), siding instead with the 54 cranks and industry shills who supported their proposal:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/11/15/radical-extremists/#sex-pest
When Canadian politicians are pressed on why these anti-interoperability policies are good for Canada, they'll say that it's a condition of free trade, and the benefits of being able to export Canadian goods to the US without tariffs outweigh the costs of having to pay rents to American companies for consumables (like car parts or printer ink), repair, and software sales.
Sure, when Canadian software authors sell iPhone apps to Canadian customers, the payments take a round trip through Cupertino, California and return 30% short. But Canadian consumers get to buy iPhones without paying tariffs on them, and the oil, timber, and minerals we rip out of the ground can be sent to America without tariffs, either (oh, also, a few things that are still manufactured in Canada can do this, too).
Enter Trump, carrying a 25% tariff on all Canadian goods, which he has vowed to impose on his first day in office. Obviously, this demands a policy response. What should Canada do when Trump tears up his "big, beautiful" trade deal and whacks Canadian exporters? One obvious response is to impose a 25% retaliatory tariff on American exporters:
https://mishtalk.com/economics/canada-says-it-will-match-us-tariffs-if-trump-launches-trade-war/
After all, Canada and the US are one another's mutual largest trading partners. American businesses rely on selling things to Canadians, so a massive tariff on US goods will certainly make some of Trump's business-lobby backers feel pain, and maybe they'll talk some sense into him.
I think this would be a huge mistake. The most potent political lesson of the past four years is that politicians who preside over rising prices – regardless of their role in causing them – will swiftly feel the wrath of their voters. The public is furious about inflation, whether it comes from transient covid supply chain shocks, Russia's invasion of Ukraine, or cartels using "inflation" as cover for illegal, collusive price-gouging.
Canadians are very reliant on American imports of finished goods. That's another legacy of NAFTA: it crashed Canada's manufacturing sector. Canadian manufacturing companies treated the US as a "nearshore" source of non-union labor and weak environmental and safety rules, and shipped Canadian union jobs to American scabs. Canada's economy is supposedly now all about "services" but what we really export is stuff we tear out of the Earth.
Countries that are organized around resource extraction don't need fancy social safety nets or an educational system capable of producing a high-tech workforce. All you need to extract resources is a hole in the ground surrounded by guns, which explains a lot about shifts to the Canadian political climate since the Mulroney years.
Since Canada is now substantially reorganized as an open-pit mine for American manufacturers, cutting off American imports would drive the prices of everyday good sky-high, and would be political suicide.
But there's another way.
Because, of course, Canada – like any other country – has the capacity to make all kinds of things, including high-tech things. Sure, it's unlikely that Canada will launch another Research in Motion with a Blackberry smart-phone that will put the iPhone and Android in the shade. The mobile duopoly has the market sewn up, and can use predatory pricing, refusal to deal, and other anticompetitive tactics to strangle any competitor in its cradle.
But you know what Canada could make? A Canadian App Store. That's a store that Canadian software authors could use to sell Canadian apps to Canadian customers, charging, say, the standard payment processing fee of 5% rather than Apple's 30%. Canada could make app stores for the Android, Playstation and Xbox, too.
There's no reason that a Canadian app store would have to confine itself to Canadian software authors, either. Canadian app stores could offer 5% commissions on sales to US and global software authors, and provide jailbreaking kits that allows device owners all around the world to install the Canadian app stores where software authors don't get ripped off by American Big Tech companies.
Canadian companies like Honeybee already make "front-ends" for John Deere tractors – these are the components that turn a tractor into a plow, or a thresher, or another piece of heavy agricultural equipment. Honeybee struggles constantly to get its products to interface with Deere tractors, because Deere uses digital locks to block its products:
https://honeybee.ca/
Canada could produce jailbreaking kits for John Deere tractors, too – not just for Honeybee. Every ag-tech company in the world would benefit from commercially available, professionally supported John Deere jailbreaking kits. So would farmers, because these kits would restore farmers' Right to Repair their own tractors:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/05/08/about-those-kill-switched-ukrainian-tractors/
Speaking of repair: Canadian companies could jailbreak every make and model of every US automobile, and make independent, constantly updated diagnostic tools that every mechanic in the world could buy for hundreds of dollars, rather than paying the five-figure ransom that car makers charge for their own underpowered, junk versions of these tools.
Jailbreaking cars doesn't stop with repair, either. Cars like the Tesla are basically giant rent-extraction machines. If you want to use all the "features" your Tesla ships with – like access to the full charge on your battery – you have to pay tens of thousands of dollars in subscription fees over the life of the car, and when you sell your car, all that "downloadable content" is clawed back. No one will pay extra to buy your used Tesla just because you spent thousands on manufacturer upgrades, because they're all downgraded when you sign over the pink slip.
But Canadian companies could make jailbreaking kits for Teslas that unlock all the features in the car for a single low price – and again, they could sell these to every Tesla owner in the world.
Elon Musk doesn't invent anything, he just takes credit for other people's ideas, and that's as true of bad ideas as it is for good ones. Musk didn't invent the extractive Tesla rip-off: he stole it from inkjet printer companies like HP, who have used the fact that jailbreaking is illegal to turn printer ink into the most expensive fluid in the world, selling for more than $10,000/gallon.
Canadian companies could sell jailbreaking kits for inkjet printers that disconnect them from "subscription" services and disable the anti-features that check for and reject third party ink. People all over the world would buy these.
What's standing in the way of a Canadian industrial policy that focuses on raiding the sky-high margins of American monopolists with third-party add-ons, mods and jailbreaks?
Only the IP laws that Canada has agreed to in order to get tariff-free access to American markets. You know, the access that Trump has promised to end in less than a week's time?
Canada should tear up these laws – and not impose tariffs on American goods. That way, Canadians can still buy cheap American goods, and then they can save billions of dollars every year on the consumables, parts, software, and service for those goods.
This is hurting American big business where it hurts – in the ongoing rents it extracts from Canadians through IP laws like Bill C-11 (the law that bans jailbreaking). Canada could become a global high-tech export powerhouse, selling "complementary" goods that disenshittify all the worst practices of US tech monopolists, from car parts to insulin pumps.
It's the only kind of trade war that Canadian politicians can win against Americans: the kind where prices for Canadians don't go up because of tariffs; where the price of apps, repair, parts, and upgrades goes way down; and where a new, high-tech manufacturing sector pulls in vast sums from customers all over the world.
Canada can win this kind of war, even against a country as big and powerful as the USA. After all, we did it once before:

Why Flutter is the Future of Cross-Platform Development: Insights for 2024
Discover why Flutter is trending as a framework for cross-platform app development Services. Discover its benefits, and what makes it different from other frameworks, and get insights from succeeding case studies.
In today’s rapidly evolving digital environment, businesses aspire to acquire a broad audience across several platforms, especially Android and iOS. Building separate apps for diverse platforms can take a lot of time and money.
Cross-platform development frameworks provide a solution, allowing developers to create applications that we can utilize on different platforms using a single codebase. This process significantly decreases development time and saves money while guaranteeing a harmonious user experience.
What Makes Cross-Platform Development a Perfect Choice in 2024
Time and Cost Saver
You can now create the app much faster with one codebase and with fewer resources as compared to separate apps from respective platforms. This summarizes delivering apps sooner and potentially paying less.
Consistency
Cross-platform development gives your app the feel of using iPhones and Androids. The kind of consistency it builds soars brand recognition and makes it easy to use the app no matter what device it might be.
Timely Updates
Handling one codebase is way easier than regulating separate ones for each platform. This indicates swifter bug fixes and smoother updates for your application.
Further, we’ll explore what makes cross-platform development a perfect choice for Flutter apps, and discover how Flutter can help you build a mobile app that reaches a wider audience with minimal effort and cost.
What is Flutter? Benefits, Features, Concepts and Tools
Flutter is a powerful, open-source platform developed by Google, allowing developers to build high-quality, natively compiled mobile apps for both iOS and Android devices with a single codebase. Flutter application development services generally revolve around utilizing natively assembled apps for web, mobile, and desktop from a single codebase. Some of its features include:
Dart is a coding language that anyone can learn. Dart is a modern language used by Flutter, Dart delivers clear instructions and speedy development, making it most suitable for beginners.
When it comes to designing a high-performance Flutter app, a reputable Flutter app development company leverages Flutter’s special effects engine, Skia, to build a fast and slick experience.
Flutter comes with a massive toolbox of customizable building blocks for all types of UI elements. This library allows innovators to produce spectacular and engaging app interfaces without writing lots of code from scrape.
Flutter’s hot reload feature is revolutionary. Hot reload allows developers to perceive their code modifications imprinted in the app straight away, making development considerably speedier and more manageable.
Key Flutter Layout Concepts
The primary design concepts of Flutter are:
1. Row and Column
The classes that comprise of widget are called rows and columns. Widgets inside a Column or Row are referred to as children, while Column and Row themselves are known as parents. A Row arranges its children horizontally, whereas a Column arranges its children vertically.
2. mainAxisSize
Column and Row have distinct main axes: the main axis of a Column is vertical, while that of a Row is horizontal. The `mainAxisSize` property determines how much space a Column or Row will occupy along its main axis.
3. mainAxisAlignment
When mainAxisSize is set to MainAxisSize.max, Columns and Rows can layout their widgets with additional space. The mainAxisAlignment property then determines how the widgets are positioned within this extra space.
4. crossAxisAlignment
The crossAxisAlignment property decides how Columns and Rows position their widgets along the cross-axis. For a Column, the cross axis is horizontal, while for a Row, it is vertical.
5. Flexible and Expanded Widgets
Originally, Column and Row layouts were fixed-sized widgets, meaning they could not be resized after layout. A Flexible widget can wrap a widget, making it resizable. Similarly, an Expanded widget allows a wrapped widget to fill additional space.
6. SizedBox and Spacer Widgets
A SizedBox widget can wrap a widget and resize it using its width and height properties. If SizedBox does not wrap any widget, it uses these properties to create empty space. A Spacer widget similarly creates space between widgets.
7. Text, Icon, and Image Widgets
A Text widget displays text that can be customized with various colors, sizes, and fonts. An Icon widget displays a graphical symbol representing a part of the user interface. An Image widget displays an image, which can be referenced via a URL or added to the app package.
Top Flutter Development Tools in 2024

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN

Heather Cox Richardson

Shortly before midnight last night, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) published its initial findings from a study it undertook last July when it asked eight large companies to turn over information about the data they collect about consumers, product sales, and how the surveillance the companies used affected consumer prices. The FTC focused on the middlemen hired by retailers. Those middlemen use algorithms to tweak and target prices to different markets.
The initial findings of the FTC using data from six of the eight companies show that those prices are not static. Middlemen can target prices to individuals using their location, browsing patterns, shopping history, and even the way they move a mouse over a webpage. They can also use that information to show higher-priced products first in web searches. The FTC found that the intermediaries—the middlemen—worked with at least 250 retailers.
“Initial staff findings show that retailers frequently use people’s personal information to set targeted, tailored prices for goods and services—from a person's location and demographics, down to their mouse movements on a webpage,” said FTC chair Lina Khan. “The FTC should continue to investigate surveillance pricing practices because Americans deserve to know how their private data is being used to set the prices they pay and whether firms are charging different people different prices for the same good or service.”
The FTC has asked for public comment on consumers’ experience with surveillance pricing.
FTC commissioner Andrew N. Ferguson, whom Trump has tapped to chair the commission in his incoming administration, dissented from the report.
Matt Stoller of the nonprofit American Economic Liberties Project, which is working “to address today’s crisis of concentrated economic power,” wrote that “[t]he antitrust enforcers (Lina Khan et al) went full Tony Montana on big business this week before Trump people took over.”
Stoller made a list. The FTC sued John Deere “for generating $6 billion by prohibiting farmers from being able to repair their own equipment,” released a report showing that pharmacy benefit managers had “inflated prices for specialty pharmaceuticals by more than $7 billion,” “sued corporate landlord Greystar, which owns 800,000 apartments, for misleading renters on junk fees,” and “forced health care private equity powerhouse Welsh Carson to stop monopolization of the anesthesia market.”
It sued Pepsi for conspiring to give Walmart exclusive discounts that made prices higher at smaller stores, “[l]eft a roadmap for parties who are worried about consolidation in AI by big tech by revealing a host of interlinked relationships among Google, Amazon and Microsoft and Anthropic and OpenAI,” said gig workers can’t be sued for antitrust violations when they try to organize, and forced game developer Cognosphere to pay a $20 million fine for marketing loot boxes to teens under 16 that hid the real costs and misled the teens.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau “sued Capital One for cheating consumers out of $2 billion by misleading consumers over savings accounts,” Stoller continued. It “forced Cash App purveyor Block…to give $120 million in refunds for fostering fraud on its platform and then refusing to offer customer support to affected consumers,” “sued Experian for refusing to give consumers a way to correct errors in credit reports,” ordered Equifax to pay $15 million to a victims’ fund for “failing to properly investigate errors on credit reports,” and ordered “Honda Finance to pay $12.8 million for reporting inaccurate information that smeared the credit reports of Honda and Acura drivers.”
The Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice sued “seven giant corporate landlords for rent-fixing, using the software and consulting firm RealPage,” Stoller went on. It “sued $600 billion private equity titan KKR for systemically misleading the government on more than a dozen acquisitions.”
“Honorary mention goes to [Secretary Pete Buttigieg] at the Department of Transportation for suing Southwest and fining Frontier for ‘chronically delayed flights,’” Stoller concluded. He added more results to the list in his newsletter BIG.
Meanwhile, last night, while the leaders in the cryptocurrency industry were at a ball in honor of President-elect Trump’s inauguration, Trump launched his own cryptocurrency. By morning he appeared to have made more than $25 billion, at least on paper. According to Eric Lipton at the New York Times, “ethics experts assailed [the business] as a blatant effort to cash in on the office he is about to occupy again.”
Adav Noti, executive director of the nonprofit Campaign Legal Center, told Lipton: “It is literally cashing in on the presidency—creating a financial instrument so people can transfer money to the president’s family in connection with his office. It is beyond unprecedented.” Cryptocurrency leaders worried that just as their industry seems on the verge of becoming mainstream, Trump’s obvious cashing-in would hurt its reputation. Venture capitalist Nick Tomaino posted: “Trump owning 80 percent and timing launch hours before inauguration is predatory and many will likely get hurt by it.”
Yesterday the European Commission, which is the executive arm of the European Union, asked X, the social media company owned by Trump-adjacent billionaire Elon Musk, to hand over internal documents about the company’s algorithms that give far-right posts and politicians more visibility than other political groups. The European Union has been investigating X since December 2023 out of concerns about how it deals with the spread of disinformation and illegal content. The European Union’s Digital Services Act regulates online platforms to prevent illegal and harmful activities, as well as the spread of disinformation.
Today in Washington, D.C., the National Mall was filled with thousands of people voicing their opposition to President-elect Trump and his policies. Online speculation has been rampant that Trump moved his inauguration indoors to avoid visual comparisons between today’s protesters and inaugural attendees. Brutally cold weather also descended on President Barack Obama’s 2009 inauguration, but a sea of attendees nonetheless filled the National Mall.
Trump has always understood the importance of visuals and has worked hard to project an image of an invincible leader. Moving the inauguration indoors takes away that image, though, and people who have spent thousands of dollars to travel to the capital to see his inauguration are now unhappy to discover they will be limited to watching his motorcade drive by them. On social media, one user posted: “MAGA doesn’t realize the symbolism of [Trump] moving the inauguration inside: The billionaires, millionaires and oligarchs will be at his side, while his loyal followers are left outside in the cold. Welcome to the next 4+ years.”
Trump is not as good at governing as he is at performance: his approach to crises is to blame Democrats for them. But he is about to take office with majorities in the House of Representatives and the Senate, putting responsibility for governance firmly into his hands.
Right off the bat, he has at least two major problems at hand.
Last night, Commissioner Tyler Harper of the Georgia Department of Agriculture suspended all “poultry exhibitions, shows, swaps, meets, and sales” until further notice after officials found Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, or bird flu, in a commercial flock. As birds die from the disease or are culled to prevent its spread, the cost of eggs is rising—just as Trump, who vowed to reduce grocery prices, takes office.
There have been 67 confirmed cases of the bird flu in the U.S. among humans who have caught the disease from birds. Most cases in humans are mild, but public health officials are watching the virus with concern because bird flu variants are unpredictable. On Friday, outgoing Health and Human Services secretary Xavier Becerra announced $590 million in funding to Moderna to help speed up production of a vaccine that covers the bird flu. Juliana Kim of NPR explained that this funding comes on top of $176 million that Health and Human Services awarded to Moderna last July.
The second major problem is financial. On Friday, Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen wrote to congressional leaders to warn them that the Treasury would hit the debt ceiling on January 21 and be forced to begin using extraordinary measures in order to pay outstanding obligations and prevent defaulting on the national debt. Those measures mean the Treasury will stop paying into certain federal retirement accounts as required by law, expecting to make up that difference later.
Yellen reminded congressional leaders: “The debt limit does not authorize new spending, but it creates a risk that the federal government might not be able to finance its existing legal obligations that Congresses and Presidents of both parties have made in the past.” She added, “I respectfully urge Congress to act promptly to protect the full faith and credit of the United States.”
Both the avian flu and the limits of the debt ceiling must be managed, and managed quickly, and solutions will require expertise and political skill.
Rather than offering their solutions to these problems, the Trump team leaked that it intended to begin mass deportations on Tuesday morning in Chicago, choosing that city because it has large numbers of immigrants and because Trump’s people have been fighting with Chicago mayor Brandon Johnson, a Democrat. Michelle Hackman, Joe Barrett, and Paul Kiernan of the Wall Street Journal, who broke the story, reported that Trump’s people had prepared to amplify their efforts with the help of right-wing media.
But once the news leaked of the plan and undermined the “shock and awe” the administration wanted, Trump’s “border czar” Tom Homan said the team was reconsidering it.

F1 and Biometrics
Biometric gloves came into play in F1 in 2018 to give medical teams immediate access to important information regarding driver conditions after an incident. It allows for vitals to be measured before, at the time of an incident and after the crash until they are rescued and more advanced monitoring is able to be applied. It is also a big help if a driver is involved in a crash that means they are not accessible straight away or cannot be visualized for monitoring so this allows teams to get immediate access to this information.
According to the FIA website, this was a difficulty by medical teams when Carlos Sainz crashed in the 2015 Russian GP where he hit the barrier head-on at 153km/h (roughly 95mph). The first row of the barrier was resting on top of him, so medical teams had to wait for this to be removed before they had access to him. Thankfully he wasn’t hurt during this crash, but medical teams didn’t know this initially as this technology wasn’t available and being used.
The sensors were basically made custom to F1 drivers. Regular sensors had not been fire tested and were not comfortable enough for the drivers to wear for long races. They use Bluetooth technology and can send data within a 500m and are powered by a small battery that drivers charge before races.
Drivers gloves have a 3mm sensor that is stitched into the palm of the fabric and monitors their vital signs during races. They measure pulse oximetry which measures the amount of oxygen being carried in the blood as well as drivers pulse rates. Obviously if a driver has an injury that is affecting their breathing, this will show in the saturations that would decline rapidly. Having this technology allows physiological readings and biometrics to be continuously monitored throughout the race from start to finish. Data from the sensor transmits to an iPhone app and gives medical crews remote and advance information on the driver’s condition. The small biometric readers are flexible and fire resistant up to 1,800 degrees Celsius (3,272 degrees Fahrenheit) for 22 seconds.

In the future there are even plans to implement sensors for respiratory rate and temperature to further monitor drivers which will not only enhance safety features but allow teams and drivers to monitor performance better.
OMP, an equipment supplier, has been developing wearable biometric monitoring systems since the introduction of the biometric sensors in 2019. An undershirt equipped with sensors and a measurement unit would transmit and record biometric data allowing for real-time monitoring of health through ECG and thoracic expansion. This would allow monitoring of drivers heart rhythms and breathing rate which would not only benefit medical teams in the case of an incident but also help identify stress, fatigue and any alteration in conditions. This would be useful considering the amount of stress drivers have been put through in the past in hot countries for example Saudi Arabia GP 2023 when many drivers retired, had to be taken to medical, threw up in their helmets or passed out after the race.

TV crews can also display biometric data during broadcasts to show the physical condition of a driver as they battle on track. However, there have been questions about the ethics and use of biometrics and why can’t we as an audience see drivers heart rates etc on screen if this data is being constantly collected. The FIA has strict guidelines about the use of raw biometric data. Section 2.4 of the FIA Guidelines for the Collection and Usage of Biometric Data in Motorsport, states that the use of biometric data can be used for more than just medical and performance monitoring and can be used for entertainment and marketing purposes but only if it is changed from raw data into a variable to protect the private health information of the driver. The FIA won’t allow the use of biometric data to be publicly available in the original form/ measurement unless the driver provides informed consent.
Essentially, driver onboard vitals are likely not to be available live due to strict laws on data protection and sharing health related information about drivers as it is protected health information. In the case of an accident or emergency, data is not allowed to be used even if the information is changed to protect the driver unless it is for medical and rescue use and post-accident information.
Sources: (x) (x) (x) (x) (x)
This also led me down a rabbit hole and found another study (it was anonymous but if you’re a sleuth you can probably take a guess at what F1 driver it was) where they monitored his heart rate during qualifying to see what his average was throughout the race to test the cardiovascular strain F1 drivers are put under!
