A Life as a Redhead by Michael Monty Actress Bodil Jørgensen, author and musician Benjamin Koppel, TV host Poul Erik Skammelsen, adventurer and media director Bettina Aller and musical star Johanne Milland have one thing in common, besides the fact that they are all famous Danes: They are redheads. In the interview book 'A Life as a Redhead', 14 famous Danes introduce readers to what it is like to have red hair. The book is written by journalist and author Michael Monty, who is himself a redhead. Honestly, lovingly and with a twinkle in their eye, the 14 red-haired celebrities talk about the positive and negative sides of being born with that particular hair color. We hear about career opportunities gained because of their red hair, about finding strength in their characteristic hair color, about feeling a special connection with other redheads and about what it does to their identity when the color fades. At the same time, several of the 14 famous Danes can talk about teasing, especially during school, about the challenge it can be to find someone to look up to you walk around with the world's rarest hair color, and about the many prejudices that exist about the characteristics of redheads. Former theater director and actress Jytte Abildstrøm, who died in January of this year, is among the contributors to the book. She was interviewed in the fall of 2024 and photographed shortly before her death. As the only one of the 14, Jytte Abildstrøm was not naturally redheaded. When she was in her early 40s, she began dyeing her hair, and in the book she describes the red hair color as "a symbol of the joy of life". The vast majority of those interviewed express in 'A Life as a Redhead' that they feel a fundamental great love for their hair color. As football commentator Andreas Kraul puts it: “My hair color is a stable, ingrained part of my life, and I wear my red hair with absolute pride!”

Dröm natten 21-22/2 2025

Drömmen var en film av Hitchcock. Vid ett tillfälle satt jag utanför den i en biografstol och analyserade händelserna: Vad kan man förvänta sig av en Hitchcockfilm? frågade jag mig själv, och ett kort direkt associerande ledde mig mellan några vackra ödesmättade scener från Vertigo och den hypnotiska hårknuten.

Jag jobbade på golfbanan i Linköping som vaktmästare. Men det var också ett slags bårhus/begravningsplats/hotel a la Norman Bates. Stämningen var alltigenom olycksbådande med det lite bleka technicolor-färgschemat, och blandades upp i en grå småstadseftermiddag på en ödslig golfbana.

Jag tog emot ett par gäster, ett par korta zigenare klädda i svarta rockar och höga hattar, som kom bärande på en kista innehållande en död kvinna. Vi skulle gräva en grav åt henne ute på golfbanan och överlämna hennes själ  åt herren. De fick hänga av sig i foajen medan jag tog in kistan i fikarummet. När jag ställt den på en katafalk vid köksbordet blev jag sugen på kaffe. Kaffet var slut, men kom plötsligt på att jag tappat ut det sista snabbkaffet i kistan när jag tog emot dödgrävar-zigenarna (fast jag inte hade något egentligt minne av att det hänt, utan mer som att ett behov av att drömma vidare, eller kanske att få dricka kaffe, manade fram rekvisitan som höll igång filmen).

Så jag gläntade på locket och tippade kistan lite över koppen, och då rann det ut lite snabbkaffepulver. Det kom lite liksaft också, men jag tänkte att det kokande vattnet nog desinfekterade den. Jag var så äckligt kaffesugen. När jag stod där och sörplade på mitt snabbkaffe såg jag mig omkring i rummet. Framför mig stod en liten arbetsbänk framför ett fönster ut mot golfbanan. Någonting blänkte till under bänken. Jag gick ner på alla fyra och såg att det var ett silvermynt med någon amerikansk president eller någon annan viktigpetter från världshistorien, tyckte porträttet påminde om Benjamin Franklin. Och det låg fler mynt där på golvet. Samlade ihop dem och la på bordet för vidare inspektion sedan.

Efter att jag druckit upp mitt snabbkaffe ringde det på en annan dörr och jag sprang iväg genom korridorerna för att öppna. Jag kom ut i en annan hall med mörkblå sametsmatta på golvet. Rakt fram i korridoren stod en mörkbrun svartstrimmig varelse. Såg ut som en hyena eller greyhound korsad med en långbent katt. Den hade en lång svans med vad som såg ut att vara rader av fenor längst ut. Och till vänster, i en liten smatt mot ytterdörren hade en hel familj somalier kommit in genom dörren. De hade en liten vit mopps i koppel och uppfällda paraplyer. Hunden påbörjade en hälsningsrit med varelsen medan jag försökte förstå vad somalierna ville, ifall de var där för begravning, golfträning eller om de hade bokat ett rum, samtidigt som vi försökte hålla djuren särskilda från varandra.

Last week one of the world's great orators came to Washington and delivered an address to Congress that was so powerful and so true that a number of Democrat progressives boycotted his remarks, apparently because they can't handle the truth.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu proved a comment once made by ABC newsman Ted Koppel: " Our society finds truth too strong a medicine to digest undiluted. In its purest form, truth is not a polite tap on the shoulder. It is a howling reproach."

Netanyahu delivered a howling reproach to the anti-Israel and antisemitic demonstrators outside the Capitol building and on college campuses when he said: " Defeating our brutal enemies requires both courage and clarity. Clarity begins by knowing the difference between good and evil. Yet incredibly many anti-Israel protesters, many choose to stand with evil. They stand with Hamas." He called such people "useful idiots" to Iran, which he said was behind much of the demonstrations that promote hatred of Israel, Jews and, yes, America, as we saw when demonstrators burned American flags outside Union Station and defaced monuments.

Just how useful these "idiots" are to Iran was noticeable in an earlier statement by Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who said anti-Israel demonstrators on college campuses are "on the right side of history."

Netanyahu mocked the demonstrators: " These protesters chant 'From the river to the sea.' But many don't have a clue what river and what sea they're talking about. They not only get an "F" in geography, they get an "F" in history. They call Israel a colonialist state. Don't they know that the land of Israel is where Abraham, Isaac and Jacob prayed, where Isaiah and Jeremiah preached and where David and Solomon ruled?"

He also responded to Hamas' propaganda that Israel is deliberately targeting civilians in Gaza: "...despite all the lies you've heard, the war in Gaza has one of the lowest ratios of combatants to non-combatant casualties in the history of urban warfare. And you want to know where it's lowest in Gaza? It's lowest in Rafah."

What about another Hamas lie that humanitarian aid is not reaching civilians (a lie Vice President Kamala Harris perpetuated after her meeting with Netanyahu).

"The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court has shamefully accused Israel of deliberately starving the people of Gaza," Netanyahu said." This is utter complete nonsense. It's a complete fabrication. Israel has enabled more than 40,000 aid trucks to enter Gaza. That's half a million tons of food, and that's more than 3,000 calories for every man, woman and child in Gaza. If there are Palestinians in Gaza who aren't getting enough food, it's not because Israel is blocking it, it's because Hamas is stealing it." After meeting with Vice President Harris, Netanyahu said her public statement was different from what she told him in private. She claimed Gazans were suffering from "food insecurity" and some are starving. She trotted out the old "formula" that only a two-state solution can end the regional conflict. This has been debunked so many times by statements from Israel's enemies which favor a one-state solution. It is amazing the line continues to be repeated over several administrations.

Following his meeting with Netanyahu at Mar-a-Lago, former president Donald Trump said he asked the prime minister why so many American Jews vote for Democrats, many of whom vote against Israel's (and America's) interests? "Habit," he quoted Netanyahu saying.

What ought to stick with Americans is what Netanyahu said about Iran's ultimate goal: "Last month, I heard a revealing comment, ostensibly about the war in Gaza, but about something else. It came from the foreign minister of Iran's proxy, Hezbollah, and he said this: 'This is not a war with Israel. Israel,' he said, 'is merely a tool.' The main war, the real war, is with America.'"

If Iran is allowed to produce a nuclear bomb they are likely to prove the truth of that claim.

Benjamin Koppel: Art of the Quartet (Unit Records, 2020)

Danish saxophonist Benjamin Koppel possesses a wealth of talent and a huge skill set. He can play anything from soul, funk and R&B as evidenced The Ultimate Soul And Jazz Review (released  as a sister companion album to the present collection) avant garde, and composed pieces. Art Of The Quartet his latest release on his own Unit Records is a stunning double disc exploring both free and more structured (but no less adventurous) playing with an equally stunning collective: Kenny Werner on piano, Scott Colley on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums. The group is truly a selfless collective for a variety of originals by Koppel, Werner, DeJohnette, Colley, a standard, and two sprawling free improvisations.

The rapport of the group can be traced back to several associations the saxophonist procured over the years, for example Koppel had played in a group with Kenny Werner, Scott Colley and Antonio Sanchez, and DeJohnette, always up for creative, exploratory music rounds out the project.  There’s a particularly supple connection between the quartet that makes their interaction a joy to hear.  Werner and DeJohnette had previously appeared with David Liebman on Fire (Jazzline, 2018), and the pianist’s own leader date A Delicate Balance ( BMG France/RCA Victor, 1997).  There is a marvelous moment on the first disc’s pace setting “Free I” where the pianist’s abrupt, prodding, jabbing chords are perfectly complemented by DeJohnette’s stuttering, quaking accompaniment, redolent of a fish fighting to breathe out of water.  Koppel enters with a searing late Coltrane ish tone and engages in thrilling four way dialogue, gradually evolving into scattered shapes where Koppel is emulating funk guitar figures and furthering the rhythmic role as he initiates an ostinato as a cue for DeJohnette to explode all over his kit.  “Bells of Belief” is a composition by the saxophonist based on a piece of Gyorgy Ligeti’s that so inspired DeJohnette that a break in the session was called so that he could drive home and pick up a set of bells that would work for the tune.  

DeJohnette makes creative use of the bells, their timbre similar to Tibetan singing chanting bowls and his own resonating bells that Sabian released over a decade ago.  He opens the piece with shimmery, golden melodic tones that blossom into full throated chords.  Koppel offers shades of Jan Garbarek with a deep cry, and as his solo builds over a rubato foundation, the conversation between  he and DeJohnette recalls John Coltrane and Rashied Ali on Interstellar Space (Impulse! rec. 1967/rel. 1973).  DeJohnette reprises “Ahmad The Terrible” from the classic Album Album (ECM, 1984) whereas the original dovetailed into a nice swing section, this fiery rendition takes on a see saw character.

After the first disc closes with the dramatic arc of “Free II” where the saxophonist tonewise hints at David Sanborn and Michael Brecker, disc 2  takes on a more structured song tact with Werner’s beautiful “Iago”.  Koppel’s impassioned testimony is punctuated by DeJohnette’s interjection of reactionary ideas, and the drummer’s trademark half swung straight eighth note feel is broken up by massive fills during Werner’s intense statement.  Colley rounds it out with a concise melodic statement carrying on the huge toned tradition of both Wilbur Ware and Charlie Haden.  “Ballad for Trane” is a perfect example of how musicians can use the inspiration of the mood set by the classic John Coltrane Quartet without mere imitation, and the group smokes through a spirited “If I Should Lose You” replete with a bouncy Colley solo, and DeJohnette barreling through taking turns improvising with Colley.  DeJohnette’s “One on One” originally appeared on Special Edition’s Earth Walk (Blue Note, 1991) and employs a similar compositional device that the drummer and pianist used on his classic “One For Eric” with a portion of the melody in half time before ramping up to explosive swing.  Koppel soars over free time, Werner turns in some of his spikiest playing of the set and benefits from DeJohnette’s swing.  To close the album, Werner’s “Sada” based on a chant from his ashram is a wonderfully reflective piece.  Colley’s bowed E flat pedal point turning into a simple vamp and DeJohnette’s floating pulse bring the tune closer in feel to some of Keith Jarrett’s more ritualistic, groove driven pieces found on many solo concerts and the Standard Trio’s Changeless (ECM, 1987).  In a way given Jarrett’s recent news of no longer being able to play due to two strokes suffered in 2018, though this Koppel quartet was recorded in March of 2015, it ends up being an unintended fitting tribute with the undeniable Jarrett tinge.  Koppel’s playing here is glistening and transcendent.

Sound:

Recorded in March of 2015, Art Of The Quartet was recorded at Clubhouse Studios in Rhinebeck, NY a studio recommended to Koppel by DeJohnette.  The recording, by Julie Last and Bella Blasko is an incredibly detailed, present recording.  It is clear from listening that this was recorded live in the studio with a lot of close miking and subtle hints of reverb added, especially on Koppel’s alto for atmosphere.  The sound of DeJohnette’s bells on a quality speaker like the Focal Chorus 716 must be heard to be believed.  In particular when listening to the CD, there is a palpable sense of glow created by the harmonics of each bell,being rendered in rich detail.  Colley’s bass is natural, gargantuan and full of woodiness, and Koppel’s alto, combined with the Schiit Modius DAC has scale, and an urgency.

Concluding Thoughts:

With Art Of The Quartet Benjamin Koppel makes a real statement.  Though he has recorded a host of records with the biggest names in jazz, the fluency of this group with Werner, Colley and DeJohnette is as if this has been a working unit for years.  While the music isn’t groundbreaking in terms of the next new thing, what it is,  is chancetaking, inspired and taking full advantage of the moment.  Koppel has one of the most distinct alto voices among a generation of contemporary players of a younger generation such as the rising Immanuel Wilkins, and perhaps the imminent most influential alto player of his generation, Miguel Zenon.  Art Of The Quartet is simply, one of the best albums of the year.

Mi nuevo familia

’S morgens 7 uur nog rap een koffie’tje en een droge cracker om dan de micro terug naar het vliegveld te nemen. En ja in de morgen is het verkeer naar belgische standaard niet zo legaal. Opnieuw overal auto’s die allemaal hun eigen manier van rijden hebben.

Op de luchthaven beginnen de kriebels terug op te komen, alle geluk dat we het allemaal kunnen uitpraten met degene die ook naar Sucre gaan. Met 5 zijn we, 2 belgen, een italiaanse, duitser en jaja een japanner, “Joji”. Hij heeft als welkomscadeau een bamboezwaard mee voor zijn familie, die japanners toch. Tijdens de vlucht had opnieuw iedereen enkel oog voor het landschap, niets zover je kan kijken. Met niets bedoel ik dan bergen, vlaktes, en af en toe een meer. Na een uur begon het niets-> niets op te houden en kwamen de eerste huizen terug op, houdt wel in het achterhoofd dat een uur op een vliegtuig een afstand van 800km is. Sucre kwam op, en meteen wilden we allemaal de witte huizen spotten waar Sucre bekend om is. Tevergeefs, de stad is te groot (nu ja groot, de oude kern is maar een klein deel)

Het aftellen kon beginnen, nog een 20 min en we zouden onze familie zien, snel snel het vliegtuig af, maar toch eerst nog het landschap rondom innemen, het vliegveld en verder niets. Natuurlijk moest het lang duren voor al eer de bagage aankwam, maar dan le moment supreme. (Ikzelf had pas een dag voor het vertrek de gegevens van mijn familie doorgekregen en had geen tijd om ze dus al beter te kennen. Laat staan hun gezichten te hebben gezien) Nu nog 20 stappen, 19, ah daar zie ik al iemand heel enthousiast wuiven met een blad in de handen. “Bienvenido Jasper”  op dat moment weet je echt niet hoe je je moet voelen, alles gebeurd zo snel. Je kijkt van het blad op en ziet 4 onbekende gezichten, lachend en je diep in de ogen kijken. Je begint een beetje te trillen en dan probeer je tussen alle welkomskreten door stotterend hola te zeggen. Knuffel kus kus? Nee Jasper kus Knuffel kus, “hola soy mwah tu neuvo mwah hijo.” Een paar onwennige handshakes later en ik kreeg het helemaal warm, trillend op mijn benen en lachend met de grootste grimas op weg naar de auto word ik gerustgesteld “este nervioso? tranquillo Jasper”. Zonder afscheid van de andere Afs’ers te kunnen nemen naar de auto. De auto die me het komende jaar gaat vervoeren, een kleine jeep. Het instappen was een heel proces, de jeep heeft alleen voordeuren, dus moest eerst de stoel naar voren worden geschoven, mijn mami, broer en jongedame stappen de auto in. Vervolgens de stoel naar achteren om er zelf in te kunnen passen. Papa rijdt.

Op de weg leerde ik ze allemaal kennen.

Papa of Papuking is camionchauffeur voor Cola en rijd heel Bolivia af. Mama of Mami hield heel de rit haar handen op mijn schouder en heeft 3 zonen en schijnt goed te koken. Ze vraagt me naar mijn verjaardag, “30 de agusto”, de taart was dus al ingepland J.

Mi hermano, Said en zijn lief... vrouw... Ivanna dienen als tolk tijdens de rit. Ivanna blijkt al 4 maanden zwanger te zijn. “Een (on)gelukje”, ze gaan volgende maand trouwen. Er werd veel gepraat tijdens de rit over koetjes en kalfjes, toch ondervond ik er mijn eerste frustraties met mijn gebrekkig Spaans.

Benjamin, mijn nieuwe kleine broer is er niet bij, hij heeft een concert op la placa major/25 de mayo.  

Na een magische rit doorheen het dorre landschap en de voorsteden komen we daar ook aan, van ver hoor je de muziek echoen tegen de witte coloniale gebouwen. We stappen het plein op tot we het volkslied horen, daarbij staat iedereen stil, traditie en wat voor mij de eerste kennismaking was met de nationale trotsheid. Benjamin speelt trombone en staat helemaal vanachter. Hij kijkt wat verbaasd op wanneer hij me ziet naast mami y papuking. Ik stap naar hem toe om een hand te geven en plots lijkt het of we beroemdheden zijn. Zijn vrienden staren ons aan en beginnen te giechelen.

Said vraagt me of ik geen dorst heb en voor ik het weet ben ik samen met hem en Ivanna op weg naar een chocoladebar. (Sucre is de chocoladestad van Bolivia)       In een leuk pralinezaakje “´Para Ti” in een zijstraat van de 25 de mayo drink ik een koude chocolademilkshake. Said had volkomen gelijk me te vragen of ik dorst had. Oef maagje goed gevuld dacht ik dan.

Ja voor ik verder ga, wil ik graag nog even kwijt dat mijn gastfamilie vaak plannen voor me heeft zonder dat ik het weet, mede door mijn gebrekkig Spaans en mijn onvermogen om ergens nee op te zeggen.

Papa komt ons halen met de auto en wanneer ik vraag of we naar la casa gaan zeggen ze dat we eerst nog gaan eten. Euh...? We stoppen bij een chinees, goh ja chinees... Op de menu staat Chuzaron en wanneer ik het probeer uit te spreken wordt ik direct verbeterd: ChuzaRON. Door de knikkende gezichten word het me duidelijk dat het een goede keuze is. En Oh Ja dat was het. En desondanks dat ik al genoeg had met de milkshake, mijn bordje kunnen opeten.

Rondleiding

Aan de deur van het huis dat ik komende jaar thuis mag noemen, krijg ik terug een hoogtepunt van nieuwsgierigheid. En oh ja natuurlijk zijn al je verwachtingen van het interieur fout, niet dat het tegenvalt! De deur opent tot heel de leefkamer. een grote tafel, voor een boliviaanse familie, merk ik het eerst op. Verder de living en een pittig grote televisie... oei, toch niet zo sober leven als ik dacht, agh misschien te snel geconcludeerd. Iemands huis bekijken vind ik altijd spannend, ze kunnen nu moeilijk nog iets verbergen, maar je bent ook blij dat ze het met je willen delen. Overal besteed je enkele seconden van aandacht aan, tot je aandcht weer tot iets anders wordt aangetrokken. Tafel, televisie, trap naar boven en wow veel foto’s en christusbeeldjes...? haha De keuken is deur door, die leidt naar buiten, de binnenkoer “patio”. De keuken bevindt zich in het eerste kamertje. Verder zijn er rond de binnenkoer allemaal kamers die dienen voor studenten.

De keuken is gezellig, ik weet direct dat hier met liefde wordt gekookt J. Hier ga ik ook ontbijten wordt me gezegd.

Terug naar de grote living, de trap op naar boven. 2 deuren, de kamer van mijn ouders en die van mijn broertje, mijn kamer is daar verder door. Stilletjes naar bed gaan dus, als Benjamin aan het slapen is...  

Pablo invulcursus

Na nog wat nieuwschierig overal rond te kijken, gaat de bel, Pablo is er met mijn valies. Pblo is een van de afsverantwoordelijke in Sucre, hem ga ik nog vaak zien. Hij lijkt me van het eerste gezicht een sympathieke kerel.

Hij vraagt me naar mijn documenten van afs die ik in La Paz had meegekregen. Daarbij ook een invulcursus om samen met je familie te overlopen. Je kent ze wel de vragen van, hoelaat moet je gaan slapen, eigen was doen, huistaken, vrienden langskomen, uitgaan,... . Tot nu toe wil ik me voordoen als de pefecte zoon natuurlijk.

Na de cursus nog wat bijpraten, Pablo is een goede vriend van Said en heeft dus de familie voor mij geregeld. Een dag voor vertrek. Hehe. Hij is zelf naar Italie geweest als uitwisseling, hij weet dus hoe ik me voel. Toch vraagt hij me het, en wanneer ik me dan in de zetel omringt door iedereen me afvraag met welk woord ik moet zeggen hoe ik me voel. Krijg ik het even benauwd, alles is nu wel heel snel aan het gaan. Nog geen 3 uur geleden wist ik niet wie mijn familie was en 2 dagen geleden was ik nog in belgie. Nu zit ik in hun zetel en wachten ze op een antwoord. Overweldigd... shit wat is dat in het spaans... euhm... Engels dan... overwhelmed! Ah claro !! haha

Dan bijslapen tot het avondeten... “Popcorn” (dat wel niet de gewoonte zal zijn zeker?) nog wat tv gekeken en wat bijgepraat, Said en Ivanna waren ondertussen aan het koken, pastellas maken, die ze de volgende dag gingen verkopen. Wat geld verdienen als jong koppel. Het was die avond niet laat, ik was bekaf en heb die nacht misschien raar genoeg niet veel wakker gelegen. Je zou anders zeggen met zoveel nieuwe dingen rond je.

 Gerust, met weinig rust
