The motion snaps through the air, so quick and full of urgency that it beckons your attention in an instant, watery eyes first bouncing between his hand and then to his own glossy stare.

“Don’t go.”

It’s simple, two words that reach into your chest and squeeze at your heart. You can’t walk away easily after that, as the anger subsides and the guilt runs rampant.

You should be mad, had every right to be, yet the flurry of rushed words and stumbled sentences caused the both of you to succumb to the temptation.

It was easy to walk away, easier to forget that the conversation never existed, and yet the way he holds your wrist, so gentle but still firm, you couldn’t. You were rooted to where you stood on the floor, eyelids fluttering in fair surprise, silently beckoning him to continue.

“y/n, I’m sorry. I am, and I didn’t mean to—“

Ben sighs, blue eyes trained on yours, only for a moment do they blink to form a sentence.

“—and I know, I can see it in your face, you didn’t mean it either.”

You sniffle, raising your unoccupied hand to brush back some escaping tears.

“You don’t have to apologize.”

“Ben,”

It’s hoarse, displaying clearly how loud you had gotten moments prior. You open your mouth, yet your lips just freeze, nothing more to say. Suddenly, as if he could read your mind, he pulls you closer, holding you tightly to his chest as he runs a hand through your hair.

“y/n,”

It’s a quiet hum, and you’re no stranger to the slight warble in his words. As you cry, Ben holds you closer, your hands clasping behind his back as you grab fistfuls of his shirt, grasping to be any more close.

“I should know better.”

His cheek sits on your head, calloused palm twirling around your hair. Nothing could pull you from this minute, you couldn’t move from your spot once more.

“I don’t want you to think I could ever hate you,”

You finally say, your own hands coming to his back as they run up and down his spine.

“I should never have tried to walk away. I hate arguing, and I just wanted to pretend that it wasn’t happening. I’m sorry.”

Gnawing at your lips, you can’t see the way his face contorts, but you can tell in his voice that whatever got under his skin today, didn’t really matter anymore.

“I came home angry. And I took it out on you. I’m the one who owes you an apology, a million times over at that.”

Ben kisses the crown of your head, softly, enough that you finally allow yourself to sink into his hold.

“I said some mean things, things I shouldn’t have. We make mistakes, we’ll just have to make sure we do better next time.”

He nods, you smile to yourself.

His hands find your shoulders, slowly sinking his weight until he’s gone and dropped himself into your arms, similarly to that of dead weight.

“I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay.”

“It’s not, but—“

“It is. I wouldn’t say it if it wasn’t.”

“Do you promise?”

“I promise.”

Turn Week 2021- Day 6, Favorite Relationship

If you’ve been following me for awhile, you know that my favorite non- canon (but very, very canon to me) has to be the ship made up of Benjamin Tallmadge and my OC, Elizabeth Walker. I’ve always written romance, but when I wrote my first Benjamin and Elizabeth scene, I knew this was different. They are definitely my favorite ship I’ve ever created, and I’m so glad people like them!! Benliz is honestly what keeps me going, and what helped me during the very dark times of 2020, along with all my wonderful friends and readers here on Tumblr. So here is a few of my favorite one shots I’ve written for them!

An Act Of Kindness- The first scenes I ever wrote for SS&SP, this features Elizabeth giving Benjamin a gift after the first successful supply raid.

Far Side of the World- Just a sweet little thing about Benjamin escorting Elizabeth home- and getting some quick kisses in. It also features one of my favorite lines I’ve ever written.

First Thing In The Morning- Some classic hurt/comfort- which I love- and also the phrase that their otp tag comes from. May 1778 scenes are basically just me indulging my sick fic fantasies.

O Zion Arise- Another May 1778 hurt/comfort scene, Ben just really loves his wife. That’s it.

A Token Of Appreciation- Set on year later in 1779, Benjamin gives Elizabeth a birthday gift. This is one of my favorites and I can’t tell you why- actually, it’s probably because I love married! Benliz a whole lot.

Sparks Fly- Elizabeth really really loves Ben and has no idea what to do about it.

I Know Places- Because quick and covert kisses are the best kisses.

Take Back Thy Gift- It’s morning, and Elizabeth really wishes Ben could stay with her forever.

My Pain Fits In The Palm Of Your Freezing Hand- Yes, it’s another sick fic, but it also features the exact moment Ben and Liz get together and change their lives forever.

If Duty and Inclination were to become a movie/TV show, who would be in the cast?

It is funny you should ask this, because I have already cast it. I like to have visuals in my head a lot of time for the people I write about. So I will sometimes make my own fancast to help with that when needed. 

I will say right off the bat, Turn: Washington’s Spies did an amazing job of casting, so I have a few stolen from there. Why rework a good thing? I will also say that I will often only cast people if I can find them in some sort of ‘close enough’ time period attire. Which is not as hard as you would think.

BEN/ROBBIE WHATEVER YOU WANT TO WRITE

“Townsend.”

Robert looked up at the sound of his name. It was Abraham, looking rather flustered. He raised a brow. “Yes?” 

Abraham wiped his hands against his coat. “There’s someone who wants to speak with you.”

“Who is it?” Robert asked.

“He’s coming in right behind me,” Abraham said, looking back toward the door. “It’s official business, though I don’t know what.” 

Robert huffed out a breath and set the papers to the side. “I see.”

A moment later, the door opened and shut quickly as a man in plain clothing stepped through. When the man turned around, Robert felt the air rush out of his chest. It was the most beautiful man Robert had ever seen.

“Sorry about the lack of notice,” the man said, stepping forward. His eyes were focused on Robert, and his stride was strong, confident. “I wanted to meet our man in New York.”

Robert stood up and shook the man’s hand - strong handshake. As soon as the man let go Robert moved to rest his hands on the chair, giving his hands something to do to fight the urge to reach out like he wanted.

“And you are?” Robert asked, voice as measured as it always was. 

The man’s eyes were boring right into his - alight with passion and intelligence.  “Major Benjamin Tallmadge,” the man - now Tallamadge - said. “I am the one who shares the information you provide with General Washington.”

“I see.”

Abe stepped forward. “Ben’s an old friend of mine.”

Tallmadge’s eyes didn’t leave Robert’s face. Robert swallowed and tightened his grip on the chair.

“Abe and I knew each other as children,” Tallmadge said. “It’s part of how I figured I could trust you.”

Robert nodded. He resisted the urge to squirm and held firm. “And now you’re meeting me to guarantee, I presume,” he said.

Tallmadge nodded, hair shining in the light streaming in from a window.

“Abe,” Tallmadge called out, still looking at Robert. “Would you mind if you left Mr. Townsend and myself alone for a moment.”

“Right,” Abraham said after a moment. “I’ll be back in a few minutes.”

As soon as Abraham left, Tallmadge stepped closer. Robert tensed, hyperaware of Tallmadge in a way he knew he shouldn’t be.

“I was reluctant at first,” Tallmadge said, voice low. He was close, and Robert tried to focus on anything else, but found himself unable. “I preferred the idea of a smaller circle, but your information has proven invaluable.”

“I’m glad to be of service,” Robert said. It was stiff. Too stiff. But he couldn’t bring himself to relax around Tallmadge, not with the way he had to keep fighting not to let his eyes drop to Tallmadge’s lips.

Tallmadge nodded and stepped closer. “As am I.” 

Robert couldn’t think of anything to say, but he prayed he wasn’t imagining whatever it was between them. There had to be something. There was something too intent about the feeling for it to be false. He found himself leaning forward.

“Sorry,” Abraham said, sounding a little winded. “I was getting weird looks.”

Robert nearly jumped back, and Tallmadge’s mouth turned down into a subtle frown.
