Earl Hines "Hine's Tune" 珍しいフランスでのコンサート・ライヴ録音盤と言うことで飛び付いてしまいました。 しかも1965年の録音なので、1964年の復活以降、米国内外で精力的にライヴ活動に飛び回っていた頃の名演の記録です。 録音評ですが... 録音年ではSumico Pearlですが、軽すぎますね。ライヴなのでShure SC35Cを推奨します。柔らかくて疲れない結構いい音、私は好きですね。 本作はメンバーが豪華ですが、ライナーの記載が明確ではありません。 ハインズ本人がメンバーを一人ずつ紹介して、段々増えていく珍しい演奏です。曲はとても短く、一曲ずつ聴きながら追いかけて確認したいと思います。 当然ピアノは #EarlHines です。 Face A A(1) "Hine's Tunes" B(2) "Rosetta" 冒頭2曲はハインズのソロ。笑顔が思い浮かぶような実に彼らしいインプロビゼーション。 C(3) "The One I Love Belongs To Someone Else" ジミー・ウッドのベースとのデュオとは珍しい。 D(4) "You Ave The Cream In My Coffee" さらに、ケニー・クラークのドラムスが加わりトリオに。 E(5) "Bag's Groove " ドン・バイアスのテナーも加わりカルテットに。 F(6) "I Can't Get Started" さらに、スタッフ・スミスのヴァイオリン。ちょっと長め。バスルームのような音色でマイクの位置が良くないかも、若干ビビりますね。 G(7) "Blue Turning Grey Over You" ベン・ウェブスターが登場、会場は一番の声援、甘くムーディな音色が包み込みます。 H(8) "Petite Laitue" 愉快？なドン・エルリッジのヴォーカル。 I(9) "Don's Blues" ドン・バイアスのテナーが加わったカルテットですが、音質がいいですね。明らかに違いますので、別日の収録では？ J(10) "Cherry" 今度はベン・ウェブスターのテナーが加わったカルテット。これも音質がいいです。 Face B K(1) "Tenderly" 滑らかなドン・バイアスのテナーがメインのカルテット。Face Aとは音質が異なるので別日の録音だと思いますが、I(9)と同じでは？いい音質だと思います。 L(2) "Sweet Lorraine" 今度は、ベン・ウェブスターとハインズのヴォーカル。これは、J(10) と同じでは？音質はK(1)と似ていますので、つまりI,J,K,Lは別日の同じ収録ではないでしょうか。 M(3) "Boogie Woogie On St. Louis Blues" 最後は、ライナーにAll Musicianとの記述、A～Hと同じ収録です。ライナーとは違いますが、A～H, Mは1965年で月日不明、Enregistré à Paris, Mutualité 録音。I～Lが1965年11月3日、à Paris, Pleyel録音が正しいと思います。 #JimmyWoode (b) #KennyClarke (ds) #BenWebster (ts) #DonByas (ts) #RoyElridge (vo, tp) #StuffSmith (vi) ESOLDUN - INA からのFRANCE'S CONCERTレーベルでしょうか？ 品番はFC 101、DistributionはWotre Music - France。ライナーが英語とフランス語が混在してして、非常に分かり辛いです。 Coordinator - #AlexandreNoble , #EtienneLacoste , #JoëlArlot Documents Research - #JoëlArlot , #MoniqueVaysse , #YvesBuilly Compiled By - #FrankDufour Cover - #MichelNoble Liner Notes - #JacquesChesnel Concept By - #FrancisPaudras , #PhilippeMalausséna Phonographic Copyright - Esoldun Phonographic Copyright - INA Manufactured By - PDO, France Photography By - #ArchivesPaudras , #HermanLeonar #jazz #fuzey #vinyl #jazzvinyl #vinylcollection #ジャズ #スイングジャーナル #レコード #stayhome *作品を知るとジャズはもっと輝きます。情報くださる先輩諸氏に感謝。 https://www.instagram.com/p/CkAh5F_PwLk/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Opening my Sunday morning with one of my favorite jazz artists, and a great tenor sax player, Ben Webster, from his album “At The Renaissance” as reissued by Analogue Productions. Recorded on October 14, 1960 by Howard Holzer and mastered for reissue by the late, great Doug Sax, and pressed at RTI, this album really shines. Webster along with Jim Hall, Jimmy Robles, Red Mitchell and Frank Butler out on the West Coast on Sunset Strip in Hollywood, California. Webster was in top form, as were his band mates. This is a live recording, and there’s a bit too much left/right to the sound for my liking, but that is offset by the tone and timbre of Webster’s tenor sax. His big, warm detailed sound (just listen for his breath on the reed). Hall’s guitar is a wonderful choice for a front line mate to Webster. And what needs be said about the rhythm section? These guys (Rowles especially) could play anything. Here they dive into five standards and one tune Webster had intimate knowledge of, Duke Ellington’s “Caravan (written while Webster was a member of the Ellington orchestra.) I’ve never heard an original pressing, so I can’t say how much of an improvement this reissue is. But I can state that I doubt it tops this LP. Long (LONG) OOP, you’ll have to scour the used market for a copy. But damn, is it worth it. Allmusic awarded the album 4½ stars with its review by Al Cambell stating: “Ben Webster and Associates is a 1959 session that took full advantage of the long-playing LP format. Highlighted by the 20-minute version of Ellington’s ‘In a Mellow Tone’ (taking up the entirety of side one) in which tenor titans Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins, and Budd Johnson plus trumpeter Roy Eldridge stretch out, not so much in a cutting contest as a laid-back jam session amongst friends. This summit meeting turned out to be a tribute to another tenor master of the same generation, Lester Young, who had died less than four weeks before this session”.

<Today’s LP> 재즈의 황금시대를 수놓은 수많은 뮤지션들이 많지만, 그 가운데에는 실력에 비해서 일반대중들에게 많이 알려지지 않은 인물들이 꽤 존재한다. 물론 오랜 재즈팬들에게는 유명하기는 해도 그다지 전면에 이름이 나오지 않는 연주자들 가운데, 수많은 음반 가운데 모습을 숨기고 있는 베니 카터의 리드작 앨범은 상당수 있다. 그 리드작 중에서도 재즈 자이언트라는 1958년 작품은 그다지 알려지지 않은 당시 베니 카터의 수작 앨범이다. 그가 앨토 색소폰 외에도 트럼펫 실력도 뛰어났음은 그다지 알려지지 않았는데, 이 앨범의 두번째 트랙, I’m coming Virginia에서는 카터가 트럼펫으로 참여하고 있다. 이 음반 녹음은 LA에 있던 컨템포러리 스튜디오에서 수일간에 나누어 수록되었는데, 테너 색소폰에 벤 웹스터가 참가했으며, 피아노에 앙드레 프레빈과 기타의 바니 케셀, 드럼 쉘리 만이 세션이었던 점에서 이미 명연의 전제조건이 완벽했을 것이라는 기대감이 있다. 솔직히 그런 기대를 져버리지 않고, Old Fashioned Love 스탠다드 넘버를 하드밥 스타일로 연주하는 사운드는 기가 막힌 흥분감을 고조시킨다. 이외에도 스탠다드 넘버와 베니 카터의 오리지날을 포함해서 7곡의 작품이 실려 있는데, 하나 같이 주옥같은 하드밥 컴보 연주가 황금시대의 분위기를 제대로 들려준다고 생각한다. 워낙 이 당시에는 유명 재즈 레이블에서 다수의 명반이 발매되어 중소 레이블을 통해 발표된 앨범들이 그 안에 묻혀 제대로 알려지지 않은 맹점이 있으나, 오랜 재즈팬들의 지지를 얻어 이러한 LP가 재판되고, 후에 CD로 리마스터링 되었다는 사실에 기뻐하지 않을 수 없다. 이 음반을 통해서 베니 카터의 매력을 다시 한번 깨닫게 되는 기회가 되기를 바란다. #music #jazz #hardbop #altosaxophone #trumpet #BennyCarter #BenWebster #AndrePrevin #BarneyKessel #ShellyManne #Jazzgiant #ContemporaryRecords #1958(Edogawa-ku, Tokyo, Japan에서) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDHAePdFroy/?igshid=85mj43txbghq
