«RHYTHMIC WARRIORS» (A Spotify Playlist)

Celebrating Juneteenth and the Summer Solstice 2020: many conversations go into unfathomable depths of the soul.

Often I’ve understood being in New York City during many lifetimes, this current one being most fruitful.

Here is a collection of songs that resonate personally across time and space, departing from the Puerto Rican danza «Violeta» by Orquesta de Rafael Hernández, led by its namesake composer, multi-instrumentalist, and actor from Aguadilla, PR, who moved to New York in the 1920s and rose to fame with his Trío Borincano and Cuarteto Victoria.

From this home base we depart on an extravaganza of musical virtuosity from Harlem to the Caribbean to West Africa and back again, with Lionel Hampton; Slim & Slam; the Chick Webb orchestra with Ella Fitzgerald singing her mega-hit «A-Tisket A-Tasket»; Lecuona Cuban Boys; Cab Calloway & His Orchestra; Celina y Reutilio; Julio Gutiérrez in a rhythmic dance suite; Babatunde Olatunji’s joyful glow; the Benny Goodman Sextet feat. guitarist Charlie Christian; Teddy Wilson; Jimmie Lunceford singing «Tain’t What You Do (It’s the Way That You Do It)», famously covered by Fun Boy Three and Bananarama; LaVern Baker covering Bessie Smith; Sidney Bechet singing «Joshua Fit De Battle of Jericho» and Paul Robeson singing «Get on Board Little Children», both reminding me of Ocean Grove, where Paul sang in the Auditorium.

Inklings of akashic memories come though, like evocations of Max Fleischer cartoons…my dad Raymond’s stories of wearing zoot suits and singing with Myrta Silva at the Audubon Ballroom...

On the cover is «Jorge, Valentine, and Victor on the roof in Little India» (2017) by Dietmar Busse.

Flying Home

Lionel Hampton nació un 20 de abril, en el seno de una familia relativamente acomodada. Curiosamente, no se sabe a ciencia cierta en qué año: según algunas fuentes, en 1908; según otras, en 1909. Pero nadie ha podido nunca esclarecer qué fecha es la correcta, ni siquiera el propio músico.

Artist Faith Ringgold was recently featured in the BBC One documentary art series Imagine in which she was interviewed in her native Harlem at the 125th Street (2/3) subway station about her #MTAArts mosaic project “Flying Home: Harlem Heroes and Heroines (Downtown and Uptown)” (1996). Now in her late 80s, Ringgold is considered one of the most important African American artists, whose work is increasingly relevant today. “Flying Home” is a mosaic mural that honors notable people from Harlem and makes them fly. The title is based on a Lionel Hampton song which Ringgold heard as a child and sought to capture its spirit in this work, by posing the figures as if they were in flight.

Happy Anniversary Glad-Hamp!

In 1936, on their way to New York for Lionel to join Benny Goodman’s band, Lionel Hampton and Gladys Riddle were married. An accomplished seamstress, Gladys gave up her profession to help Lionel build his career. While Lionel played music, Gladys ran the business. Managing Lionel and the band, negotiating contracts, and booking shows, Gladys made a name for herself.  

A wonderful pair, together they established their own record label, Glad-Hamp, as well as their own music publishing company, Swing and Tempo. With Lionel’s musical talent and Gladys’ business acumen, the Hampton’s were able to thrive. 

Gladys and Lionel also loved helping their own community. One of their projects was the building of the the low-income housing units, the Lionel Hampton Houses, which were begun in 1971. Gladys died in 1971, and ten years later, Lionel opened more low-income housing units in New York named the Gladys Hampton Houses. On the cornerstone, Lionel had inscribed, “God gave me talent, but Gladys gave the inspiration.”
