It's Not the Years, It's the Mileage Finale: Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (Comission for WeirdKev27)
Tumblr media
Hello all you happy archelogists and welcome to the final installment of my Indiana Jones Retrospective, It's Not the Years, It's the Milleage. For those just joining us for the epic conculsion, i've covered all four previous Indy films over the past few months, from the good with great action set pieces, iconic lines, and deft character work, to the bad with the uncomfortable amount of brown face, temple of dooms theme park version of india and support of colonolisim, and Crystal Skulls sterotpyical 'savage tribesman", to the just plain weird with aborted ideas such as a haunting in scottland, a chess game to the death, sun wukong vs indiana jones, and an out and out alien invasion which Indy makes out during suprising no one.
IT's been one long, LONG journey and today.. it ends, as does the film franchise. With Dial of Destiny. Dial is the main reason we did this: a fresh fim with ford, with a fresh director in Logan maestro James Mangold, a final chapter for the ages.. and it has been recived with a resounding
Tumblr media
Yeah while there was some hype for this film from Fans of Mangold or Indy (Of which i'm now both) it's now gotten to the point Wikipedia has out and out labeled it a box office bomb and Naturally the failure of this film has been taken with grace and restraint by the internet
Tumblr media
It hasn't helped that Indy has come out in a summer with plummeting box office from usual money makers, so people are only more on their "Why aren't people seeing these films" kick. When really the reasons aren't new. We have "Doing the same shit a diffrent day instead of going with what was new and working " (Transformers rise of the beasts), "Another film outboxing it" (Elemental), "The company behind it simply not promoting it at all" (Ruby Gilman, which I intend to review at some point), " or "Oopsie we hired a pedophile as our leading actor, have no idea where we were taking this franchise when we started this film, and our company is ran by an evil overlord no one likes whose actively made the media landscape worse ever since he took over, better hope our promotoinal tactics work..."
Tumblr media
The issues aren't new, their simply finding hitting people over the head.. and that's what happened here. Indy had an uphill battle: I was only invested at first because James Mangold was directing it and Logan is still one of the best superhero movies ever made. I got more invested thanks to this retrospective. Given Disney's slipshod treamant of star wars and terrible treatment of last jedi as well as the mcu being a mess right now, it's not a huge leap that many audiences really didn't want to gamble on ANOTHER disney live action movie that just looked okay, no matter how much Phoebe Waller Bridge or Antonio Bandareas it had. While it's sad as I honestly don't think the film deserved THIS much of a bomb.. I can't blame audiences for waiting for Disney Plus. We simply live in an era now where most people have tons of streamers or will get one for a month to watch one movie and anything else they've caught up on. We're simply entering an era where having a big brand name isn't a guarantee and in this case can be a curse if that name is disney. Big franchises can work, see Spider-Verse and Scream VI making great money, but you have to have something to offer.
Tumblr media
So come with me under the cut as we see if Indy has just that or is best left in the past
MASSIVE SPOILERS AHOYHOY
When I'm Gone, He's Gone
As you'd expect, Lucas still wanted to make a 5th film after Skull, with Speilberg and Ford on board as always. This time though..
Tumblr media
Lucas himself went to the press saying he wanted to do something new and Speilberg was stuck in the past... which I translate as Lucas once again went kinda nuts on the premise while , much like after Temple of Doom, Speilberg wanted something a tad more grounded to avoid making the same mistake twice. It comes off as the two just could never quite agree on what to do and eventually.. decided to let the franchise move on without him, selling it and the rest of Lucasfilm to Disney. Disney naturally wanted an indy film right away and after getting the distribution rights one year later in 2023.. it took them a decade.
Tumblr media
Yeahhh while we got the sequel trilogy pretty fast in hollywood time it took a good decade for Indy to put his hat on. At first there were rumors floated about about recasting, then it was settled on ford, then Speilberg was set to direct and the film proceded to go through a ton of writers, from Crystal Skull's david koepp
Tumblr media
And even Dan Fogelman of This is Us royalty was floated as one of the writers. The film also got delayed thanks to Speilbergs work on Ready Player One and the Post, before he eventually stepped off all together. He claimed it was to pass it on to a fresh director, but it really feels like his heart wasn't in it anymore, and it was best someone whose heart was took the lead.
Enter James Mangold, director of The Wolverine, Logan and Kicker of ass. Mangold was a solid choice and my book and along with his usual co-writers Jez and John Henry Butterworth, who I assure you are real people but cannot assure you aren't old timey prospectors sent forward in time, hashed out the script.
Casting went smoothly, as did filiming, with the only hiccup being production's start being delayed because of COVID. They shot in morocco, england, ireland and spain, along with the us as you'd expect. Speilberg wasn't entirely detached as he still advised and watched dalies, ultimately loving the final product. So now we can actually look at that product let's start with how it writes Indy himself. The Mileage Adds Up
One of the things that made me not really enjoy Doom or Crystal.. was a lack of character work. Indy was about the same as when he started the adventure in contrast to Raiders and Last Crusade taking him on a wonderful character journey, in the former getting his passion back and in the later reconcliing with his dad. Dial of Destiny dosen't reach those highs, but I still think it does a decent job. The opening.. is okay detailing Indy having an adventures in the last day sof the third reich, setting up both Helna's Dad and our big bad, as well as Archimedes Dial, basied on the real life Antyhkiera Mechanism. I really do love the dial as a plot device as it's a departure, being the only one of the five to not involve a god of some sort, and yes the alien counts. It's just a time machine a famous philospher made. It's still fucking neat, I mean IT'S A TIME MACHINE A FAMOUS PHILSOPHER MADE, but it's a bit more grounded while still being pretty damn nifty.
So while the intro is mostly.. eh for me, what it does really well... is contrast the indy we know.. with where he is in 1969: Unlike Crystal Skull, which glossed over the massive amount of time passed, here were with an indy who feels both his age.. and that he's been left behind by the world. That time has taken everything from him: his friends, his father, his marriage.. and his son. He's left to yell at the neighbors, go to a class that dosen't pay attention and have a retirment party he clearly dosen't want. Granted his retirment does feel like a missed opportunity as wikipedia mentioned it pre-release as being forced out due to speaking out against operation paper clip, something that I either missed.. or more likely simply ISN'T in the film. It's a real shame, the idea is great it's just not present. This creates a really intriguing Parallel: Indy at the start of the last adventure of his we'll see is a broken down man whose years of adventuering have left a mark on him, who is estranged from Marion, has not a ton to live for, and is clearly only loosely holding it together. And the Indy we met in Raiders.. is a broken down man whose years of adventuring left a mark on him, is estranged from marion, has not a ton to live for and is clearly only loosely holding it together. The diffrence is how tired Indy is. In his late 30's he's beaten a bit and reduced to graverobbing.. but the minute he gets a real assignemnt int he grail, he jumps to it. He has his job, he has his friendship with marcus, and he's able to fix things with marion. He's not completely gone, he's just lost. Indy in Dial... has watched all his friends and his son, more on that in a minute, die, his marriage fall apart, and his job slip out under him. Without his job.. he's a man without a purpose.
This also ironically creates another Scrooge McDuck parallel, another bit of symmetry and one I didn't plan on till I started writing this and thought of the story: Indy reminds me a lot of Scrooge in the final part of Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck. Both are seasoned adventueres who have either pushed away anyone they have left or lost them and feel they just have nothing left but to slowly rot away.
And like Scrooge it takes a bolt of inspiration from the new generation after him to get Indy back in the game. In this case it's the highlight of the film, Helena Shaw, played by the wonderful, funderful fleabag, Phoebe Waller-Bridge. WB likely dosen't need any introduction but just in case she was showrunner of the successful and inventive stage show turned amazon prime show fleabag, showran killing eve and in general is pretty delightful. So it's no huge suprise she's great as Helena Shaw, daughter of Marcus Indy's sidekick for the intro who became obessed with our titular macguffin, Archemedis Dial, which can travel through time some time, though not to the end of all man kind. Helena is a neat character in that they managed to make her distinct while still giving her enough similarties to indy to serve well as his shadow, his ghost of sins past, him in his prime. She's also a brilliant archelogist, has a kid sidekick like indy did in temple of doom with Teddy Kumar (Ethann Isidoore), sells priceless artifacts for a profit, has a messy love life, kicks plenty of ass, and tries to command every room she's in. What helps seperate them is their demeanor: Indy is gruff, snarky and surly. While Helena can snark with the best of them, she's fast talking, fast thinking, and tends to use charm as much as the old Indy Guile both heroes posses. The main diffrence is rather than sell to museums, she sells to private collectors...
Tumblr media
Okay the REAL difference is that she's only in it for the money while Indy at least, on some level, cared about the history even at his lowest. Helena just sees all her father could do and all she learned from being around him before his passing as a way to get. Once again like Indy.. she had a father who cared more about some big treasure than her child.. and a godfather who cared more about what was going on in his life than ever checking up on her. She's a person whose been left to her own devices and feels she's doing just fine.. but honestly could be putting her talents to better use. Maybe not in a school like indy, but she could help return artifacts to their countries... probably still for a pretty penny, but not just to some random asshole to sit in his den.
You can tell dealing with her just makes Indy feel even more tired, which is somehow possible after all he's been through. He's once again seeing a ghost of his past and this time can't seem to get it through her head. When she celebrates shortly after his friend Renaldo dies, he has to sharply remind her. Nothing seems to get through to her.. till we get to THAT scene. Probably the best scene of the film. The climax is awesome.. but it's this one moment. On a boat at night, Helena asks Indy what he'd do with the dial, clearly thinking some grand adventure.. instead Indy: I'd stop my son from enlisting Helena: And how would you do that? Indy: I would tell him that he would die, that his mother would be overcome with a grief so intense that his father would be unable to console her, and that it would end their marriage. The sheer PAIN Ford conveys during that monologue.. may be the finest acting he's ever done. You can just FEEL Indy's loss; his son is gone, his marriage is torn, and he blames himself for both. It gives a horrible pathos to why he's so broken down. Both developments.. coudl've been really cheap. With how much everyone but me seems to hate mutt, and how rightly no one can stand shia suprise these days, most were expecting..
Tumblr media
Instead Mutt's death is used as the catalyst for Indy's slow spiral into dispair. He would've been happy in retirment.. but he lost his son, his wife.. he's a man truly with nothing left he feels. And while he gets some old spark back unlike Scrooge.. he's fighting it every step. He dosen't want an adventure, he dose'nt want anything but his son back, and he knows damn well that even if the dial could... the sad truth is it likely has some horrible cost to it. The grail gave eternal life but bound you to a spot. The Skull gave you the knowledge of an unknowable alien god, but drove you mad. The arc killed anyone who looked. If the Dial even works... he knows it can't bring his son back, and he's only going after it because it's better in a museum than in the hands of Nazis. We also see a change in Helena. She goes from following Indy's lead out of nececity, to seeing his point, to seeing the beauty of the world instead of just the dollar signs. She still wants the money.. but she starts to see the beauty in history instead of the dollar. I also like that this isn't easy on Teddy, who sees her postive changes as coming between him and his surrogate mom, when really she fully intends to stick with Teddy no matter what and shows nothing but loyalty.. and in the end.. they dont' really finish that arc
Tumblr media
I like Teddy a lot, and I wish this had more of a bow on it, though we do get him taking down a nazi and trapping him to drown and later getting into a dogfight. Teddy slaps is what i'ms aying> He dosen't have a ton of deep character to explore, but he's fucking great.
This all really cumulates in the climax.. which is so great i'd rather save it for after we cover one last major character, our antagonist. Our big bad is Mads Mikkelsen as Jurgen Voller, a thereoticain who wants the dial. At first Indy assumes, as most of the audience would that Voller simply wants the dial, which he's shown to obess over to win the war for hitler. Turns out Voller's plan is more complex. We see in the intro how Voller is the ONLY one who both sees the dial's value among the nazi's and the writing on the wall: Hitler is almost gone, he fucked them over. It's over. And thus the horror of Voller isn't like with Thot , at the giant horrifying nazi machine and all their power, and more at evil allowed to hide in plain sight. At a society who forgives horrible people because their useful. Voller got a free pass thanks to operation paperclip.. and the film shows while that idea got us tons of advances including space flight.. it came at the cost of giving horrible people real power and influence. The president is outright giving voller a MEDAL. And he hasn't changed: a truly chilling bit has him talking to a black bellhop delivering meal and asking where he came from.. and dismissing him saying he came from america. Voller is every bit the white supremacist monster he ever was, he's completely loyal to the idea of the nazi's. .just not to hitler. Voller's whole plan isn't to help hitler.. but to take him out, replace him and have someone compitent win. And he only gets as fara s he does because the goverment willingly works with him, gives him agents, goes after Helena and the dial. They know what he his but fully aid and abet him. Sure they eventually realize he's gone rogue, that his pet agent is entirely in his pocket.. but they don't turn on him till far too late and with one of their great agents dead. Concidentaly I feel Agent Mason is wasted: she's the calm rational agent.. but she's also the only major black character in the film and gets killed by a nazi. That's.. entirely fucked up and while I suspect inteitonally fucked up it just dosen't work for me.
Voller is also once again, much like with Belloc, an evil mirror of indy: Both are geniuses who adore history.. but one's a good person despite being gruff while one seems harmless when we first meat him but is actually a total monster. Mads does a great job showing just how evil the guy is without going over the top. Voller is determind to change history... and he does.. just not how he wanted to.
This Ain't 1933!
The climax.. is fucking awesome. Like Crystal Skull it goes beyond what the series had done before, if not more so. It's arguably even MORE over the top. But it works. For those who haven't seen the film... INDY GOES BACK IN TIME. The dial DOES indeed work.... but it's set up to ONLY go back to this point. Helena points out the idea of "loaded decks' earlier.. and realizes the dial is one. Archimedes only left it behind to create a stable time loop.
Indy going back into actual history is nuts, entirely and my jaw dropped at it.. but it's so damn fun. Our heroes not only have to escape the plain and get the dial back after it drops onto the coast, but survive the Siege of Syracuse, the roman invasion that eventaully resulted in Archimedes end. So we have two planes flying overhead, arrows everywhere and nazis versus romans. It's over the top but not in a way that really undermines the franchise, and frankly as what's intended to be the final act of indy ever, it's a fitting finale: the man whose explored history in the present.. gets to LITERALLY go to the past for his final adventure. I do get how not everyone will agree, and it won't work for everybody, this may be a bit tooo over the top, but I love it and feel it nicely ties up everyone's character arcs.
For Voller he gets to join history.. but instead of "fixing" it like he wanted he dies horribly and is forgotten to history only the "dragon" (his palne" is left.. and cleverly foreshadowed earlier when Teddy watches a puppet show. His nazi's all die and it's glorious to watch nazi after nazi go down from arrows or our two heroes escaping the plane while teddy takes the rest down with the help of a hapless pilot.
We then get the payoff for both Helena and Indy, as Indy gives the dial to archimedes.. and plans to stay. After all we established he's lost everything... why would he go back? He'll die soon.. but he's cconvinced he'll die soon back in the present. It's Helena who'se ultimately changed realizing both the value of history.. and ultimately the movie's moral: you can't change the past, but you can live for today. Helena can't change her awful upbringing or the things she's done.. but she can be better. And Indy can't save his son from death, save archimedes from death or be a better husband to marion during the greving process.. but he can be better to her and still live now. He still has so much to offer. He taught helena to love history and to try and be better. He gave his son a better life even if it was sadly cut short. He can be better. And when he can't be convinced the easy way she proves she's fully earned her way to being indy's succesor and just clubs him and takes him back (the dial has to go back with them as archimedes needs to make his own). The end scene also mostly works for me: Indy is back at his apartment.. but finds he's not alone as when he woke up there last time: Not only has Helena forgiven him, having realized much like Indy himself that warts and all, he's family, but Sallah, who I haven't gotten to talk about is here. Sallah is great in this film, not only helping Indy when he needs to lay low but enocuraging his friend it's not over. It's also nice to see Indy helped him and his family immigrate and that he's teaching his grand kids egyptian. It's also a nice way to still have davies play the roll.. but have him get a bit more depth and make up for a white guy playing the roll.
And last but not least.. Marion returns, and the two reconcile. I thought it was a bit easy when I frist saw it.. but I see now i'ts more the idea they have a long road ahead.. but both are willing to see it together.. Indy admits he was wrong and Marion is willing to give him another shot. For the third time but at least this time it's likely she just needed some psace to realize he wasn't being callous he just wasn't processing his grief.. and now he's ready to.. maybe they have a shot. It's a nice way to close out the films: Indy's life isn't over, he's got friends, he's got his wife.. and there's always another rainbow.
Assorted Other Stuff: The action set pieces as usual are fucking great, my faviorites easily being the climax and the diving adventure. The latter reminded me a lot of Tin Tin, Red Rackam's Treasure. Antonio Banderas is great as Reynaldo and I only wihs he had a bigger part.. and survived. It's not a huge suprise, saying Antonio Banderas is great. While I LIKED the finale with Marion, I'm with Karen Allen. They could've used her more. She deserves better dammit. WHy is it with the sequels they just can NEVER get bringing her back right?
Last but not least.. ther'es this weird subplot only brought up in the first two acts where the government frames indy for Murder that just.. never gets resolved? Like they never adressed it and as far as I can tell there's no resolution. Now granted I still think Indy isn't going to be arrested: He's clearly been unconcious for a week and Helena did have to get him back into the US, so it's likely the goverment found out about voller, got a debrief from helena.. and agreed to clear her and indy's record and absolve him of murder in exchange for never talking about this to anyone, as a Nazi escaping and killing one of their agents , after they pardoned the guy wouldn't look good. But we needed a line. It's easily the most baffling decision in otherwise a really godo film.
So finally we're , like indy back where we started.. was the film that bad?
Tumblr media
When writing the reviews for Crystal Skull and Temple, I honestly hated the films MORE the more I thought abotu them, the more I found wrong, the more I realized how little they did. With this film. it's the opposite. The more I examine dial, the more I find to like. The character arcs, the action, the payoff. It's not perfect, again Indy is still kinda wanted for murder among other little plot gaffes, but I do think Dial is a solid entry in the series and better than both temple and skull at capturing what made the series graet. It dosen't nail it perfectly.. but it's still a fun ride with some really good character work and phenominal performances. Really indy failed.. because no one cares outside of fans of the franchise. As my brother put it when talking about this very film recently, kids don't know indy. It's not the big hit with kids star wars was and is. Star Wars will likekly rebound someday because Kids still dig it and kids will grow up with the sequels the way I grew up with the prequels, warts and all. Disney just assumed Indy was enough to carry it and he wasn't. I'm sad at it because not only is this a good film, but I was hoping for more pulp adventure films. But i'm also happy at what we got and to have done this journey. I saw the good, and the bad. And I saw a franchise I ended up really loving. In the end I got what I needed out of this franchise

THE BIG CANON MASTERPOST* [note: if you write any of the characters mentioned, i just want to reiterate that you do not have to comply with anything written below, this is just for fun and because i love world building*]
(originally written: 17-01-2022 / version 1: 16-02-2022 / version 2: 17-12-2023 / version 3: 21-7-2024 / @theskyuniverse)
khione hima goossens (iman vellani) has lived in maxville her entire life. as have her parents. though her paternal grandparents and their ancestors came from europe and her maternal grandparents and their ancestors came from surinam, india and pakistan, respectively. khione grew up in the richer part of town, in the same neighborhood as gwen grayson, and spends her time at the maxville ice arena and ice slash snow sculpting.
her dad, leander (neil jackson) is a cryokinetic. he used to be known as the superhero permafrost but has since gone inactive - or so he clains - to focus on his acting career. he's been tapped for the 'darkstar' franchise, playing the titular character. in reality, an altercation with barron battle forced leander to hang up his cape for good.
her mom, saraswati, who's more commonly known as sara as per her insistence (jameela jamil) has hydrokinesis abilities and is a retired superhero - in solidarity with her husband - turned tv personality, being known for the fabulous lives of superhero wives. and, yes, khione has been on the show too. multiple times, in fact. it's all over tiktok and youtube and it's in the top 10 on netflix, much to her despair.
khione has inherited both her dad's cryokinesis and her mom's hydrokinesis, which means she's got a big family legacy to live up to. much like will stronghold, khione is a she's a third gen.
leander and saraswati never should have been allowed to name their only daughter. aside from huge expectations for their daughter, a tendency to manage her life, a huge dose of haughtiness, as well as loftiness and a remarkable hatred for pyrokinetics, whom they deem "beneath them" as well as "dangerous" and "destructive", leander and saraswati are a normal couple.
well, as normal as two retired supers can be.
especially if one of them has a secret.
khione may be an only child, but saraswati has another child out there: zach braun-springer (noah lalonde) who possesses photokinesis and an immunity towards the cold that people thought was just sheer dumb luck on his part.
this secret comes to light during zach's freshman year and khione’s sophomore year at sky high, a few months after royal pain’s rampages have largely been forgotten. the super community can change like the wind, at the drop of a hat, or a coin. it goes from loving to vicious. from soft to sharp and back again. it ruptures the marriage of khione’s parents (though they stay together instead of divorcing), and does the same to the marriage of zach’s parents as well. khione tries to keep her head above water by focusing on her classes and her friends.
sometime during her senior year at sky high, nurse spex passes away, rendering her grandson valerian - laser eyes kid - effectively an orphan. his parents died on the job and nurse spex, his grandmother, took him in. in her opinion, she’s raised the finest boy in maxville. no one had the heart to tell her that her grandson was behaving terribly. after nurse spex’s funeral, laser eyes kid takes out his grief on everyone around him, khione included. but he finds a home with mr and mrs timmerman, who end up fostering him alongside jolene hamilton (and they adopt both of them down the line).
khione manages to make it to graduation. her parents don’t show up as she walks the stage because they’re both in europe for their jobs. shortly afterwards, khione gets accepted into sky u.
in the transitional period between high school and college, the superhero world is shaken to the core when josie stronghold (nee demarco) dies. khione attends the funeral with her parents - who fly back from europe for this - and does her best to be there for will in the aftermath when his paternal grandparents fly into town.
during her first year at sky u, disaster strikes again: warren’s father, barron battle, escapes the maximum security prison. people speculate it’s an inside job. the downtown area of maxville gets turned into a disaster zone made of smoke plumes, flames and screams. khione, warren, will, layla, zach, magenta (brianne tju) and ethan are deployed to put a stop to barron's battle against the citizens of maxville.
things turn from bad to worse, however, when barron gets away and kidnaps ethan banks (jonathan daviss) who is, by far, the smartest member of khione’s friend group and it takes far longer to get ethan back than khione would have liked.
enter katherine "katie" baxter shortly after khione's second year of uni has started. she and her twin michael “mike” baxter have sound based powers. while barron has escaped prison, mike is still locked up and katie is hurt and enraged about it. she and mike have gone through some shit and now they don’t quite know how to exist without each other. katie kidnaps khione, thinking that if she presses the right buttons, the stronghold seven (or six, in this case) will pull some strings to get mike released. khione is gone for about a week and the squad gets video updates. khione's parents are informed as well and they fly back from europe immediately (though whether they are truly concerned for their daughter's wellbeing or for everything they've invested in her so far is truly anyone's guess).
while she has her, katie excessively uses her sound powers on khione who tries her hardest to fight back until she’s exhausted. when it becomes clear that khione has received training when it comes to dealing with sound based powers to the best of her ability (because of course khione’s parents would do so, even though it hurts like hell), katie realizes that she needs to press harder. so she does, promising to wean khione off of all her friends when it becomes clear that they're not going to help her get her brother back.
the stronghold seven (or six, in this case) find khione locked up inside maxwellness, a wellness and beauty centre ("for maximum wellness!”) located somewhere in maxville. katie left khione in a sauna booth with the settings way up high. after she gets out of there, she faints and it's a race against the clock to try to get her core temperature back down before she dies. this whole experience exerbates khione's existing case of claustrophobia too.
ethan and khione hang out more afterwards. they bond over their respective experiences. ethan comes out as queer. khione tells him she’s pansexual. they bond over that, too, and magenta organically adds herself into the mix when she comes out to them as bi.
both of them spend the majority of their time catching up on the stuff they missed in regards to schoolwork as well. ethan and khione also end up training together (and seperately) so that neither of them get taken against their will ever again.
khione's third year is filled with pro and anti super sentiment across the board. after supers are forced to go public when mr medulla's particle accelerator explodes, the general public has a lot to say. turns out, he hadn't really "gotten rid of that horrible weapon, forever" like he said so many years ago and kept tinkering with the reversed pacifier behind the scenes. he just couldn't help himself. medulla was certain that he was doing a good thing here: he was going to bring about advancements in (mad) science, physics and advancements in medicine. still, the consequences are long-lasting. and never before had the debate on whether supers need to hang up the cape or not, on whether "their secret identity needs to become their only identity" been fiercer.
after graduation, khione officially takes up the mantle 'skadi' amid the pro and anti super discussions and enters the field alongside the others and officially becomes part of the stronghold seven.

FIGHTER ( 2024 ) 🇮🇳🇮🇳
Tumblr media
Siddharth Anand has delivered greatly on an patriotic aerial action thriller. For India's first aerial action movie, this was really good. And that's the best part, how they have captured the essence of the Indian Air Force.
Every actor did their performance well, especially Hrithik Roshan, he just knows how to portray the emotions in every situation. And Sid Anand just knows how to use the charms of Hrithik Roshan. Truly one of the best duos in Indian cinema.
Being someone who absolutely loves the Top Gun franchise, I was eager to see this genre in India & I am not disappointed at all. The aerial action scenes were done really well. Credits to Sid Anand & D-NEG for that work.
Also, the movie doesn't take a cringe & over the top take on patriotism but an emotional & heartful connection. The movie makes full use of its run time without dragging or rushing anything. Also, the movie pays the utmost respect to the IAF which they deserve.
Although some songs are good, the placement was bad. And to conclude, this was a really great movie. Great work from Sid Anand, who is always trying something new every time. Well Done!!

Kung fu panda: Po's best companion
Still on the train of Kung fu panda, and...you know everyone saying the franchise is dead now cause of it's 4th movie. everyone seemed to forget that there was always 6 movies that were going to be made and that the 4th movie isn't THAT bad. don't believe me, go watch the megamind sequel and see how bad the movie COULD have been.
but, my feelings on everyone's negativity aside, I still want to talk about that kung fu doing Panda. here I want to give you all MY opinion on I believe is Po's best companion.
Tumblr media
each and every instalment has given us a slew of new characters to fight alongside Po on his journey to become the world's best kung fu master.
in kung fu panda 1 we have Shifu, Tigress, crane, monkey, viper and mantis. these 6 follow into the tv series legends of awesomeness. while there are they are quite a few new companions, such as Peng, there only lasted for an episode or two. so it's the 5 who are po's companions.
in the second movie, the only two knew characters or Ox and Croc but they stay in prison. the soothsayer is sorta like Oogway, not a companion but a spirital teacher.
in the third movie, we take a change and have Po's dad, mr.Ping and his birth dad, Li Shan as Po's companions.
in the paws of fury, they introduce Po's panda students Nu Hai, Bao, Jing, and Fan Tong.
in Dragon knights we have the wandering blade, Rukhmini, Akna, Colin, and eventually Klaus Dumont.
now and in the newest movie we got Zhen in kung fu panda 4.
those are alot of friends, but who do I believe was and still is Po's best companion? answer:
Tumblr media
it's Luthera, also known as wondering blade. Ha ah, believed I would tell you it was tigress, huh? sorry to you Tipo shippers but I believe Blade is not only Po's best companion but the shipper in me thinks she is also Po's best girl.
let me explain. while Po cares for everyone of his friends in their own ways there were some moments keeping me from thinking they were the best side kick to po and vise versa. some are his family, his students are really just his students, this includes Zhen and shifu is his teacher. the closest to being Po's true companion was monkey in the furious 5 and legends of awesomeness, still it isn't tigress, the reason is that each one claimed Po was their best friend in an episode or another (Tigress had yet to say that), I have so many issues with the legends of awesomeness series for making Po a borderline jerk so it makes sense that sometimes they'd turn their backs on Po. Even Tigress wants to Punch but holds back, hint: in an episode where Po makes the 5 forget their memories Tigress does punch Po and says it felts so right despite not remembering Po. so what about the movies? in the movies Tigress is super close, what prevents me from saying Tigress is Po's companion is that if she is ever given a choice, go with Po or stay behind to protect the jade palace, she choose to stay at the palace. similar in the third movie when shifu had to tell her to go find Po.
thus we get to Blade/Luthera. the dragon knights have some flaws. but it does things that I didn't realize that I wanted to see in this universe of animals. it's what do the other locations outside of China are like and what animals live there. like india, brazil, and england. it also made me realize I wanted to see Po interact with another bear, a different type of bear. it makes sense that he meets a brown bear.
this isn't a Blade vs Tigress debate as I seen many do compare the two and argue they should have just put tigress in since the two act similar ,....ok, do you sense a pattern here or is it just me, I'm saying Blade is different in ways that make her a better companion to Po.
as I mentioned Blade and Po have yin and yang dynamic. in one episode Po can be the hero while Blade is the side kick and in another it's Blade taking the lead and Po giving support. Blade keeps Po grounded and focused but needs him to give her emotional support. this is how her relationship on Po develops. while Po, losing his title as dragon master (this show is a separate canon so it's master instead of warrior) and he admits he also depended on Blade. in one moment the two admit they were lost before meeting each other. their combat mirrors this, Blade with swordsmen ship and Po with hand to hand, this gives them coverage. Po teaches Blade some belly attack and headbutts that she uses throughout while Po finally uses Blade's technique and fights with a sword. their reunion in the third season is also a spin hug, take that how you will. this all comes to the end of the series, in the beginning Po was on an eating vacation. taking stops here and there, and when the series is done Luthera joins Po on his adventure, Po stating they can go anywhere they want and her replying, that sounds perfect. Po is happy at the end when he says that he found..a best friend.
all this is why I believe Po and Luthera are the ultimate kung fu panda duo. this is just me thought, tell me who you believe is Po's best companion?

We used to be more excited for the kajju katli our relatives used to bring than their presence. So, this is the vision {Laddu Gopals} with. As the name came from the almighty Krishna ji’s childhood avatar, we are focusing on the quality and ambiance we create so that people dont just get food from our store but a spiritual experience too that they can carry to their day. breaking the stereotype for many mainstream sweets and dairy shops, we don't outsource any ingredients used in our preparation. We have our own dairy and we grow our vegetables in our farm. minting money from people of profit making has never been our slightest of priority because this outlet is more of a dream than a business project. WHAT WE PROVIDE:Savouries-1. KAJJU KATLI2. BESAN LADDU3. MILK CAKE4. PATTISA5. MOTI CHOOR LADDU6. CHAM CHAM7. RASGULLA8. RASMALAI9. SPONGY RASGULLA10. We plan to make this india's biggest sweets franchise where every mithai is prepared from scratch and the ingredients used are grown in house.CUSTOMERS POV:What people want is an environment where one can sit with family and eat dishes that are mouthwatering and delicious. But not at the cost of spending huge money as it the marginal utility for is directly proportional to the money spent. People want the best food at the best price. OUR STAFF:We all know that food business is all customer based. Anywhere we go to buy something, we just want to feel like home or welcoming at-least. We as a unit are so keen on hospitality and to make our place feel like home that there’s a training time course of one week where we teach our staff to be warm and positive towards the customers. OUR MOTIVE:There is only one motive of LADDU GOPAL as a unit that is "JANTA KA ACHAA KHAANA KHANA BANTA”

Been meaning to talk about this for a few days, but holy fuck, what a week for women's sport.
(Before we get started: INR 1 lakh is about £1,000. INR 1 crore is about £100,000)
The Board of Control for Cricket in India have finally got behind the growth in women's cricket and are launching the inaugural Women's Indian Premier League this year and the player's auction was held last Monday.
The 5 franchises were each given a salary cap of about £1.6m to build a squad of 15-18 players by buidding for their services. So £8m to be spread among around 90 players.
Reserve prices began at 10 lakh rupees and were capped at 50 and while some players didn't generate much interest (for example, Royal Challengers Bangalore got a big bargain by securing the Australian bowler, Megan Schutt at her reserve price of 40 lakh, and Alyssa Healy only went for 70 lakh) a few made bank.
Tumblr media
Mandhana cost RCB 28% of their cap. No other player in either the men's or women's IPL takes up as much of their team's cap as her. It's also nearly 7 times the value of her central contract with the BCCI to play for India and vastly more than the £30k she gets playing in the gimmicky Hundred tournament in England.
It's a fresh tournament and the teams need stars to act as faces of the franchise. And so, in places they've mirrored the men's game. Mandhana, India's best batter and who wears 18, joined RCB, whose men's team have Virat Kohli, who also wears 18. (They also signed Ellyse Perry for 1.7 crore and the destructive Richa Ghosh for 1.9 crore). Harmanpreet Kaur, India's captain, got 1.8 crore from Mumbai, whose men's team feature Rohit Sharma, who is also India's captain.
These prices are for a tournament that begins on March 4 and ends on March 26. Three weeks. 8 to 10 games. Pro-rata, the top women are getting paid like footballers (and even those whose salaries are counted in lakh are getting healthy paydays).
This tournament will be successful. The BCCI wouldn't be doing it if it wasn't going to be. And it will grow. Lots of talented foreign players fell victim to squad building restrictions and went unsold. The league will expand. Maybe to 6 teams, before eventually ending up with 8.
All that's holding it back is how quickly talented Indian players are identified and their skills develop. The cash the BCCI generate from this will supercharge that search. The top players already have access to top coaches and training facilities, but for some, the 10 or 20 lakh they get from this tournament will help them build a future and lifestyle as professional cricketers and generate opportunities for others, which in turn will allow the BCCI to expand the tournament.
Within 10 years, I'd be surprised if the WIPL isn't the biggest women's sports league on the planet.

It's Not the Years It's the Mileage: An Indiana Jones Retrospective: Temple of Doom (Commission for WeirdKev27)
Tumblr media
Hello all you happy archeologists! We're back again cracking the bullwhip for part two of Not the Years it's the Mileage, my look at all 5 Indy films, the first four of which I haven't seen in years.
Unlike Raiders which I at least remembered pretty well from seeing it a few years ago, Doom was more of a fuzzy memory. As a kid I maybe saw it once.. and was so terrified of it I didn't go back. As such many of it's best moments I mostly know from Family Guy back in it's prime
Tumblr media
Or that Clerks episode that somehow dovetailed parodies of the bad news bears and the last starfighter into a third act temple of doom montage. Outside of Kahli Mah, which naturally BOTH referenced (I love the mola ram stand in in the clerks version just… casually popping the heart back in when Jay ruins it) I really didn't now much about this one other than it got really dark, scared a lot of children for life like it did for me, and was easily the most divisive entry of the franchise till they involved Actual Cannibal That Guy What Was in Holes. I went into this one with an open heart though hoping it wouldn't get plucked straight out for Kali. A lot of it is due to this image
Tumblr media
But I genuinely wanted to see if the film was disliked because it was diffrent and may of put people off or if it was really a hot mess that deserved it's derision from some. Let's find out under the cut
A Long Way to Dehli
As I detailed last time, Raiders had a bit of an uphill battle to get made. But with raiders being one of the most successful films ever… the production here was more…
Tumblr media
Our directors could do whatever the hell they want… so the issue to start was more what the hell DID they want? While George Lucas had sold Stephen on a trilogy he promised he had planned out… he had to come clean afterwords he only really had the one adventure in mind. He wanted to do more, they just had to figure out what that was.
Most of the ideas floated around were pretty awesome: There was a sweeping adventure involving Son Wu-Kong's legend in China that involved Indy motorcycling across the great wall, which Chinese Authorities refused to greenlight, a ghost story in a scotish style scrooge mcduck style nixed for being too similar to poltergeist and most epically and just begging for a disney+ series INDY IN THE VALLEY OF THE DINOSAURS. I'd also like to point to that last one for people who thought the aliens thing was George and Stevie using aliens was a giant stretch. Or this movie as they settled on black magic cult based on the film Gunga Din, which I know next to nothing about.
Once they had the theme settled they went to Laurence Kasdan again to write the script. HIs response to following up the biggest success in his career?
Tumblr media
Yeah Kasdan HATED the idea completely, calling it gross, too dark and feeling Speilberg and Lucas were in a very dark place. The latter wasn't wrong: Lucas was going thorugh a divorce, Speilberg a messy breakup, and Lucas would flat out admit later that his messy divorce was part of why the film turned out the way it did. So instead of taking the advice of someone who helped them sort out how messy their first pitch for Raiders was… they promptly went to William Hyuck and Gloria Katz, who wrote one of Lucas' other previous smash hits, American Graffiti
Tumblr media
… and would go on to write Howard the Duck
Tumblr media
They basically gave the boys exactly what they wanted and they were off to the races. The only other major hurtle was that India refused to let them film there unless they let the goverment consult citing inacurate depcitions of the culture and heroic depcitions of the british colonizers who occupied the country for far too long. Once again instead of listening to common sense.. they ignored the voices loudly telling them
Tumblr media
And pressed on. And it seemed to work out. Despite all the naysaying, when the film actually got out… it was a massive hit, being the global #1 and domestic #3 behind
youtube
and Ghostbusters, so not shabby at all. It was also a critical darling with Pauline Kael, who hated the last film, loving this one and Roger Ebert shockingly loving it. I'm shocked more because he really REALLY fucking hated horror and with the darker and more violent tone of this film, I didn't expect him to be a fan. It's weird what got through to him I swear.
It also had a giant impact on cinema… in that it was, along with gremlins, one of the straws that broke the mpaa's back and led to the creation of PG-13. Yeah to my shock when I found out as a teen this wasn't always a thing: PG used to cover more films. Granted the MPAA's ratings can be a bit wonky for a variety of reasons we don't have time to get into but introducing something between FOR THE SHORTYS and SEX AND VIOLENCE O'CLOCK MOTHERFUCKER was entirely necessary.
So really while i'm sure there are people who didn't like TOD on sight, the backlash sorta creeped in with time and despite a seemingly warm audience reception… the creators have gone on record as NOT liking it. Speilberg feels the only good thing to come out of it was his marriage to Kate Capshaw and Lucas, like I said, was in a very dark place. Neither really seem FOND of the film and it feels less like two creators bowing to public opinion and two simply realizing that while the film pleased crowds and displeased the MPAA, it was
A Hot Mess of Monkey Brains
If nothing else, Temple helped me come up with a new term: A Carte Blanche Sequel. As with this franchise a creator can often have an uphill battle with their first work, trying to get it made, get executives not to fuck it up, etc. But if all goes right, the work is a success as it should be and thus the creator is given more opportunities, and this time execs ease up a tad as they assume the person knows what their doing. And Ideally this IS how creative works should work and sometimes does work out : for instance Jonathan Hickman at marvel started small.. but once he did bigger works like his runs on avengers, fantastic four and x-men, they were were all sweeping well thought out epics with neat changes to the status quo that were warmly welcomed by the fans. But at the same time just in the same office you find guys like Dan Slott or (formerly) Brian Micheal Bendis who USED to write great works, but no have given up carring both what the people actually reading them want, what's in continuity or even what people actually care about because they made some good works once and are riding that shit for life. It's a very hard tightrope to walk: even when it should've been a slam dunk like Gilmore Girls year in the life it can still end up falling into pitfalls the creator just didn't realize were there and no one had enough courage to tell them no. And that's what Temple of Doom Falls into for me. Like Year in the LIfe it's not TERRIBLE, there's good parts to it.. but it's messy and not exactly well planned. There are parts that are downright awful and never should've gotten off the board. It's what happens when you have all the power, but none of the responsibility.
The result is a score of problems with some good bits floating in the middle. THe first is that the film is way too damn fast paced. It was apparently even WORSE originally with Speilberg adding in matte painting shots in post to help slow it down. While Raiders also had a fast pace it had plenty of calmer talkier moments: The beauitful temple opening gave way to Indy teaching a class and setting up this adventure. Indy and Marion escaping Egypt gave way to the two reconciling on a boat. and the utterly horrifying finale gives way to a calm wrap up and the warehouse finale. Raiders got that you need to have slower moments to build the characters to make you care when their plunked in the set pieces. Doom by contrast has even it's talking pieces be bit productions: our heroes have a meal of over the top gross shit while getting exposition, Indy talks not to a fleshed out real feeling person but a stereotypical quest villager who needs his help because the Thuggee stole his stone, even Indy's moment with his love interest is over the top slap slap kiss kiss. There's not a lot of time to rest for five minutes, which is fine when the tension is up but makes for a film that while shorter feels like less of note happened.
Indy also feels diminished. While I do get why this film is set before Raiders, so they wouldn't have to use nazi's once again, the problem is doing so means Indy can't EVOLVE. Part of what made the first film so fascinating was seeing this weatherbeaten guy evolve, see him let his walls down, let marion in and grow as a person. I honesetly wish they'd went with the earlier pitch, having it set back with Abner Ravenwood and Marion , find out what happened during said fallout. Instead it's just we find Indy doing what he did: selling artifacts, doing the right thing begrudgingly and romancing the nearest lady. We still get good character stuff: Indy only needs one stone for his quest, to help an ailing villiage that see sit as sacred.. but goes after the others not out of arrogance or greed, but to make the find of a lifetime. There's a bit of ego, but it's clear it's just as much having two of these to display to the world, taking them to a museum not to horde or culturally steal but to show off. Even when left iwth just one.. he give sit back to the village, feeling their right to it was more important, which serves as a ncie contrast to later when stealing one just to make a buck is just a regular thing for him.
My faviorite though that dosen't involve short round: Indy is trying to sneak past.. but sees the children of the villiage he's aiding in slavery to the thugee and one being beat and purpsuflly distracts the guard. He knows he'll be captured.. but he also knows there's no other option that he can live with.
The film just feels a lot less soulful.. it's why quiet moments in a film MATTER: you sometimes need just a second. Even Avengers Infinity War, a film with an absolutely breakneak pace.. still has small moments to plan. Even if our heroes don't really get a break from start to finish, there are moments for them to regroup and plan for a second before the next attack on Thanos or more character driven moments that help us care about both sides: We get Thanos waxing on WHY he settled on his genocidal nightmare of a plan, his killing of gamora to get the soul stone, and for our heroes we get moments to plan and strategize or moments of levity. While still a fight the fight with the guardians and Iron Man's Patchwork Avengers is played almost entirely for laughs, and we get a nice moment of character interaction as Tony trying to actually make a plan is interuptted with Star Lord butting in like a 12 year old. IT's the character that makes a film and in this one while Indy and Short Round do their best there jus tisn't a ton.
Credit where it's due: Short Round is awesome. Is he a perfectly made character? No. Lucas and Speilberg's accidental prejudice leaks in and he shouts every line.. but he's also a compitent , smartass, someone who can trade barbs with Indy easily, and was resourceful: when captured and ensalve dhis response is to simply break his bonds. When faced with a brainwashed indy his resolve is to break it and free his friend. He's a kid who dosen't give up, pulls his weight and proves invluable to the quest. It's mind boggling he never came back for crusade and we never found out what happened to him and hopefully with his actor now being a friggin oscar winner and rightful public darling, we might get a spinoff filling that out. He may not be in dial of destiny, but Short Round is in my heart.
Ini more the galbladder reigion.. is willie. Oh my Kali…. Willie. If you needed a giant massive red flag with big bold letters on it screaming "THESE MEN JUST WENT THROUGH SOME ROUGH BREAKUPS" this was it. Marion Ravenwood was a fairly fleshed out , self reliant woman who didn't take indy's shit, backed him up when she could. She did get kidnapped a silver age lois lane amount, but she was still likeable and brought out the best in our hero Willie.. is just obnoxious. I get what they were going for on some level: they wanted to have Indy's new love intrest be a constrast, being less self reliant and more tradionally feminine, but still compitent in her own way. She isn't too terrible at first: her shrill shouting is there, but she's compitent in the opening singing an utterly bizzare but captivating version of anything goes in what's bound to be the weridest intro in these films. I'm calling it now despite knowing 4 has a nuke, and not having a single idea how Dial of Destiny will open. But just hard cutting to a chinese nightclub rendition of anything goes that goes in and out of english for no reason…
Tumblr media
It's oddly delightful. And willie shows her prowess: She weasels her way into the meeting, and once chaos breaks out and Indy Friend We Just Met dies , she tries to sneak the diamond and has the good sense to steal the antidote to the poison you just drank. Granted it leads to the
Tumblr media
Of Indy reaching in there to grab it later, but points for trying to find some way to surivive this. It's just after this.. she spends most of the runtime complaning loudly about everything. It's a LITTLE understandable as she didn't ask for this adventure.. but she also stole the serum Indy needed to LIVE to save herself, and he took her with him and short round out of the country simply because otherwise she'd likely be shot by these guys on principal and takes her with him largely because she's safter with him than alone… mostly because she also wants to try and wander off on her own at about 80 points and predictably nearly dies. He has no real opportunity to ditch her somewhere safe as given her trying to ungreatfully turn around more food than most of the people of the village they first ge tto see in a week indicates she'd just try and run off once things got rough and wind up in danger, and once they get to an actual city, it's ran by the thuggee cult, so he can't exactly leave her unsuprvised. Indy, even if he's an ass about it is doing the right thing and she just won't shut up or get that maybe a hot shower just isn't something you can get. It's no wonder her own actress hates the character: She's an utter nightmare of a character. You can have someone whose both very touchy about their apperance and badass. See Daphne in most post -what's new scooby doo works, Rarity from Friendship is Magic, Star Butterfly, or Emma Frost from the X-Men. Being feminine dosen't mean you can't kick ass and it's clear Speilberg and Lucas hadn't realized that. It results in Willie dragging the film down and me just.. not carring about her and indy. He's a dick to her and she screeches every other line. No one wants this to happen. As for our antagonists their not terrible.. but they lack the development Beloq got. Mola Ram at least has Toht's intimdation factor and of course KAHLI MA, he's not terrible and is one of the most homaged parts of this fiml for a reason. Amrish Puri does a fantastic job. But there was a clear opportunity to do more with these guys: Both Ram and his minion Chatter Lal bring up the British occupatoin of India. Ram could easily be seen as a magneto or toffee type: a man whose doing evil shit (in this caase slavery) but to try and repel the colonizers and take his country back. It also makes bringing the Thuggee back make perfect sense: he's taking something from India's past to try and give it back to it's people. The problem is despite having a genuine bone to pick with the british.. their portrayed as WRONG. That the british occupation ain't no thang, those are the good guys, while the people who, even if their using absolutley terrible methods and still aren't good people, are sene as mustache twirling villians for it. I get what Lucas and Speilberg are going for, that their lying for their own ends.. but it only works if that's made clear. Instead for all we know Ram really does think the evil he's doing is the only way to break even against an occupting force. Which brings us both to our final section.. and the part of the film that's the most aggrviating Now With 80% more racisim!
Yeahhh. While Raiders racisim was bad and should feel bad I at least got the sense George and Steven didn't know any better and were simply going off old pulp cliches they hadn't realized were racist, being white men in power in the 1980s. It didn't make things OKAY, but you could say "it was a diffrent time" and at least enjoy the other parts of the film, and if you can't it's totally fair.
With Temple of Doom.. it's way harder to wince at and move on as wingus and dingus' accidental racisim is , instead of kinda off to the side and in the margins of the story after the opening… at the center of the godamn plot. It's their voodoo hoodoo, their story where no matter the talent the racisim at the center just makes it very hard to sit through a good chunk of it. Even not knowing Indian culture well, I still don't, I could tell something was.. off about the way it was presented even before looking up the speitcis like how shanrkah stones are more phallic symbols of shiva that are neat to have around more than worshipped objects, how Kali worshipppers don't act like this, or how the Thugee were gone decades ago. It all came off less as a historical version of india and more what four white people who bothered to do not one iota of research outside of rewatching Gunga Din had. And unlike last time where I could at least give them the wiggle room tha tno one told them here Kasdan (whose own script to raidres had some iffy elements), and the GOVERMENT OF INDIA ITSELF told them this was bad please change it and they did not listen. I feel way more comfortable laying into them here when it's clear they could've done their work. Hell Carl Barks, one of Stephen's clear inspirations for this series, for all his own racisim of his time, at least did through research of places. Here it just felt like they just thought "Eh india will work since we can't do china" and adapted the film from there. The result is a film that's flavor is entirely "white savior x-treme blast". The village our heroes end up in fall heavily into
Tumblr media
Basically relying on an astral savior instea dof thinking of a plan to save the kids that dosen't give their hand besides "throw the first white guy we find at it and hope it works. " This one at least was common at the time and while that STILL dosen't make it okay, I can at least see how this slipped through Everything else though? Hoo boy. So as I mentioned the villians both speak out against the colonialism of Britan. The evil eil guy who works for Mola Ram points out how britian checks in like their children who need to be guided. That's a bad thing.. but since i'ts coming out of the obvious villain it instead comes off like the film agrees, especially since the british army.. are seen as GOOD GUYS. And I don't know a ton about the occupation of india but I looke dup enough to know it was brutal, bloood soaked and you know horrible, something even without google they could've done and India outright listed in their issues with the script. There is ZERO reason to involve these guys. Sure Indy needs a calvary later.. but just have him see an old friend at the palace who happens to know some guriellas or something. bam. Problem solved. Why , of all things, did you choose an occupying force to be your big damn heroes at the end? Instead of a triumphant moment.. it's a bunch of colonliast assholes wiping out wave after wave of "savages" who the film TREATS as such. It's fucking disgusting now, it shoudl've been then and it's easily one of the things that just.. ruined the film for me. We also of course have to talk about the gross dinner scene. With that one.. I think the scene is bad and dumb on my own merits, but also misguided> The intent was clearly to have the villians purposfully prey on western racisim to try and get indy and captain racsiim to leave. The problem is A) your having the bad guys do it and B) it's not expressed clearly enough to come off as that insteead of them genuinely thinking that. Several people were genuinly ignorant enough to think this was actual indian cuisine which for the record is vegetarian for the most part and what isn't isn't live animals. WHat i'ms aying is MAYBE don't portray country's food via a "what grosses us out the most " contest like your 12. Which is genuinely how the writers deecided what to add. I wish I was joking. The result is a film that is just. .hard to watch at times. I wanted to like it: I went in trying to give it a chacne.. but the heavy racisim, sloppy plot, lack of a character arc and everything just left a bad taste in my mouth. Ironically the one thing I thought might be a deal breaker, the dark tone… was actually good. I liked that it went a bit darker, did something diffrent. I don't like a LOT of the diffrences, but out of all the films problems being dark and gloomy isn't one of them. It' sproblem is two guys with a lot of talent but not a lot of filter go totgether and made whateve rthey wanted, and it turned out a racist hard to follow mess that's fun to look at but gets less and less the more you think about it. I liked Raiders MORE as I wrote about it, found more ot enjoy, found more little crannies.. with this one.. I ended up going from "it's okay" to just… really not liking it at all by the end of this review. It's far from the worst thing i've reviewed and while certainly up there isn't the most racist.. but it is a disapointment that this flim lived down to it's reuptation and i'm hoping last crusade will boost my spirits a bit. On the bright side at least Short Round got an oscar and has a bright future ahead of him.. and hopefully I do too. Thanks for reading.
