ANATOMY OF A HEALTHY BREAKFAST Are you stuck on what to eat for breakfast and why? Well when I was in my 20's breakfast was not a priority but at 51 eating a healthy breakfast helps with my metabolism and keeps me properly fueled for the rest of the day. A healthy, nutritious breakfast should consist a serving of protein, a high quality whole grain, and 1 to 2 fruits or vegetables. Following this formula will keep you feeling satisfied and fuller longer, while also giving you the essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants you need to start your day right. Also include a small amount of healthy fat in your daily breakfast—safflower oil, olive oil, nuts, butter, or avocado—to help your body absorb vitamins and minerals. Think real, fresh foods such as: Eggs, either scrambled or hard boiled Vegetables such as spinach or my favorite broccoli Steel-cut or long-cooking oats with fruit Yogurt, with probiotics to improve your immune system And once you begin to add a healthy breakfast to your morning routine, you’ll quickly notice its impact on your productivity, mood, and energy throughout the day.#fitnessafter40#fitnessafter50 #betterafter50#womenshealthmag #healthyrecipes https://www.instagram.com/p/BvaEw2fgJoy/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=jto463uvnt4f

These are things for which the ship has sailed:
1. Shutting up – I no longer want to keep my mouth shut when I see an injustice. Or feel one. It’s not that I never spoke out, there were times when I did, but it was usually on behalf of someone else. Not for myself. I’m done with that. I don’t know how much good it will do, but if I get treated like shit, I’m going to shout about it.
2. Worrying how I look to others – Randy and I had breakfast at an upscale cafe this morning, well, upscale compared to Waffle House. We were going grocery shopping afterwards. My hair would have looked okay if I hadn’t run out of dry shampoo, Also, it’s possible I was wearing jeans that should have been washed 3 wearings ago. But really…jeans don’t ever get dirty, do they? There were four women sitting at the table next to us and every one of them was wearing an infinity scarf. I had a brief moment of panic. I kind of looked like a pan handler and Randy…well, he definitely looked like a pan handler. What would the infinity women think of me? Then I decided that their opinion of me wouldn’t change how my bacon and avocado omelet tasted. For the record, Waffle House has better coffee.
3. Guilty Pleasures – I no longer have any guilty pleasures. I just have regular pleasures. I don’t feel guilty about liking Lady Gaga. I don’t feel guilty about reading every Stephanie Plum book and I certainly don’t feel guilty about getting obsessive about a TV show and watching it over and over. I have moved on from Supernatural and Doctor Who. I am currently re-binge watching The Walking Dead. Because Daryl.
4. Uncomfortable shoes – F@#k wearing uncomfortable shoes. I don’t care if my socks match or not. If they mostly match, that’s good enough.
5. Making excuses for my messy house – You know why my house is messy? Because I don’t feel like cleaning right now. Also, it’s messy because I’m unorganized and a bit of a slob.
6. Accumulating shit I don’t need – Oh my god, I cannot convey how much I am done with this. Nearly everything we have isn’t necessary or entertaining or comforting. We have less than two years before our baby boy graduates and starts college. During that time, it is my goal to relieve ourselves of at least half of everything we own. Maybe more.
7. Spending unnecessary time with people I don’t like – I actually started this one a few years ago. I used to go to lunch a few days a week with a group of coworkers. I don’t like them. They are mean, petty, and we don’t share the same interests. One day, I looked at them while they squabbled over sports or politics or a work project and thought what the f@#k am I doing here? And then I stopped having lunch with them. Life is too short to spend unnecessary time with douche twizzles.
8. Finding the good in every person I know – Sometimes, people are assholes. I’m sure, even with the biggest asshole, if you do enough digging, you’ll find something good about that person. But why would I do that? Why have I done that? I don’t want to waste any more time than I have to on unpleasant people. People make their choices. If they decide to be insufferable twat monsters, then so be it. I no longer feel compelled to find something attractive about people like that. I just want move on from them as quickly and painlessly as possible.
There are 8 things that I am too old for. What are you too old for?

What I Learned About Gut Health (That You Should Know)
Tumblr media
Blogger and multiple sclerosis advocate Cathy Chester has been on a quest to understand more about how the bacteria that live in our bodies affect our health. Here she shares what she’s learned, with advice on how you can cultivate a healthy microbiome, and feel so much better in the process.
As a child you probably used the word “guts” when angrily arguing with a playmate (as in “I hate your guts!”), but haven’t uttered it since. As adults we avoid talking about digestion at all costs. But we should think and even talk more about what goes on in our guts, because the colonies of bacteria that inhabit them play a crucial role in our health and well-being. They regulate metabolic function and immune responses, and can even affect our mood and behavior.
When our gut microbes are out of balance it can lead to pain, digestive distress and maybe even disease.
I’ve been on a quest to learn more about gut health, ever since I was diagnosed with four separate digestive issues. The excruciating pain, bloating, alternating constipation and diarrhea, joint pain, nausea and dizziness I experience launched me on this frustrating odyssey that’s been enlightening and exhausting. I’ve had to search for a medical expert who’ll listen, learn to use food as medicine, and devour current research.
When these communities of microbes in our bodies are healthy and balanced, they can protect us from disease-causing pathogens, help us absorb nutrients from our food, and ensure that our immune systems function properly. But when our gut microbes are out of balance it can lead to pain, digestive distress and maybe even disease. Imbalanced gut bacteria has been linked to a range of illnesses including Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), Ulcerative Colitis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Celiac disease and Crohn’s disease.
I’ve learned firsthand that gut health is essential to overall health, and hope that others can learn from my experience. Here are a few things you can do to keep your gut healthy:
Listen to your body. If your stomach doesn’t feel right, your weight fluctuates, you’re feeling anxious or depressed, you’re not sleeping well, or your skin is acting up, speak with your doctor about the possibility of gut-related issues.
Limit antibiotic exposure. Medications used to kill pathogenic bacteria also wipe out the good microbes our bodies need. If you have to take antibiotics, ask your doctor whether you can also take a good probiotic to counteract some of the effects of the antibiotics.
If you have an autoimmune disease such as rheumatoid arthritis or multiple sclerosis, improving your gut health might help with symptoms.
Eat for a healthy belly. The food you eat can determine your gut health by literally feeding the good bacteria, causing them to proliferate and crowd out the bad kind. Focus on high-fiber veggies, fruit, nuts and seeds, especially “prebiotic” foods including pistachios, garlic, onion, quinoa, millet, chia, and bananas. Try eating fermented foods such as kimchi, kefir, yogurt and kombucha, which contain natural probiotics. Stop eating processed foods, simple carbs like bread and pasta, and sugar, which can feed harmful bacteria.
Think about the autoimmune/gut health link. If you have an autoimmune disease such as rheumatoid arthritis or multiple sclerosis, improving your gut health might help with symptoms. Seek help from a doctor or qualified nutritionist experienced at looking at systemic disease through a digestive health lens.
I’ve been struck by this quote from Dr. Gerard Mullin, associate professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins and an expert in internal medicine, gastroenterology, integrative medicine, and nutrition: “The average human being has about 100 trillion of these organisms (microbes) at any given time. Although most are located in your lower intestines, you’re literally bathed and surrounded by microbes that have a vast array of metabolic roles in the body. Understanding your gut microbiome is vitally important to take action and live a healthy life!”

This is 52! What a beauty!!!! . . . Reposted from @beauty101bylisa ❤️ I am 52 years old today and 30 days sober! I have given myself the ultimate gift of health and clarity. We have only one body to carry our soul through this lifetime and never again will I abuse my body filling it with alcohol. 🙌 Let me know if you guys are interested in having me post YouTube videos about my journey with alcohol and sobriety. I know there is a lot of us who have a toxic relationship with alcohol or anything that we struggle with. Everyones story is different even if your addiction is to something else like drugs, food, porn, sex, cigarettes, marijuana, exercise, etc. It all feels the same and you are not alone! 💕 I love you all very much and thank you for your support and for accepting me for exactly who I am... PS👉 For anyone wondering about the scars on my belly they are from multiple surgeries... I had a near death accident resulting from a drunk driver hitting me in the back as I was walking home. I had a 2-level Prodisc spine surgery through my abdomen. Then 2 different incisional hernia repair surgeries with mesh, and finally a full abdominal repair with mesh removing the old mesh and sewing a full sheet of mesh into the muscles. This spans from my ribcage to my pubic bone and it’s like a sheet of armor and its not going anywhere! 🙌🙌🙌 Also stretch marks from my 3 pregnancies which I fully embrace. Every scar is a reminder of how strong my body is and for that I am forever grateful❣️❣️❣️ . . . #50andfit #over50fit #over50life #over50andstrong #stayhealthyandfit #50feelsgood #50overs #aginggracefully #betterafter50 #healthboost #50andfab #stayhealthystayhappy #over50andfit #over50andfab #over50andfabulous #50over #over50andfeelinggreat #stayhealthymyfriends #healthylivingjourney #healthylivingrevolution #healthylivingtips #agingbetter #energyboost #lifeafter50 #boosthealth #healthimprovement #tipsforhealth #over50s #healthyafter50 https://www.instagram.com/p/CHNnCGds0ZI/?igshid=1tz9nj8q6gv23

It is margarita night indeed. Out with friends enjoying a few margaritas, mojitos. 🍹 🍸 🥂 Would I regret it tomorrow? Not one bit. But I have to admit, I used to. Why? Because I worked so hard all week to be good and now ruined all the healthy fit eating and workout in 1 night. And have to work at least twice as hard to see progress. But I didn't see progress at all. The scale didn't barge downwards. It just kept going up 😖😭🤬. I also tried the popular diet plans. Yes, I saw weight loss. but gain it all back in time. . What changed? By learning a new mindset about food, eating, change my workouts, it was the game changer. This is not a diet plan. It is a healthy eating lifestyle that is sustainable. No need to give up any food groups, no calories counting, no measuring, no putting your food into small containers to account for. . Lets chat. DM or email me to start. . . . #margaritanight #socializingwithfriends #livelifetothefullest #57yearsyoung #healthyfitafter40sandbeyond #saltandpepperhair #greyisthenewblack #lovemylife #beunforgettable #betterafter50 #hatemyself #learntoloveyourself #iamworthit https://www.instagram.com/p/BvGDjQqAR2y/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=p3mn02p756ej
