Arthurian Knighthood and Guinevere's Sword
Tumblr media
[...]
Tumblr media
As a modern person, this SHOULD be in more Arthuriana:
Guinevere giving Lancelot his sword - it is symbolic of his:
coming-of-age,
entry into knighthood,
establishing of his relationship with Guinevere, in both Romantic AND Feudal contexts
AND, the granting of Martial Prowess from a Lady (in a sanitized, Medieval Gender-conforming context). Possibly being an expression of that Lady's own martial potential.
Like, this plot thread reeks of some kind of Mentor-Student relationship that normally would be between male characters, but instead, its between an "Older and Wiser Female" and "Younger, Inexperienced Male" (compared to Tristan and Isolde, where its Tristan who teaches Isolde at her mother's behest).
It's like Scathach and Cu Chulainn. Obviously, Guinevere could never be allowed by medieval writers to teach Lancelot martial arts but the implicit allegory in place for us to take advantage of, especially in this era where Guinevere can fight and/or be a warrior queen.
It helps that Guinevere has her own cadre of young knights that she rears and maintains:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Its basically a kind of feeder school.
Hell, I would make the sword Guinevere gives as Arondight, the sword of Lancelot from Bevis of Hampton (and weirdly hyped-up in Japanese Media). The sword would have been Guinevere's personal weapon since her maiden days, and the passing of this weapon to Lancelot represents
Guinevere retiring from her own Martial Career
Lancelot, in becoming her champion, acts as an extension of Guinevere's prowess, stuff she can't be doing anymore as a court lady and Queen and now must work through proxy.
Lancelot becoming, in a sense, a successor of Guinevere's legacy

Favorite Yiddish fairytale? I had a book of folktales collected by Isaac Beshevis Singer as a kid, my favorite was Mazel and Schlimazel.
I think it would have to be one of the tales of the Wise Men of Chelm, maybe the one where the tzedakah box gets robbed so they put it on the ceiling of the shul out of reach, then they notice it's out of reach and no one can use it, so they build a ladder to it? I mean I don't know if that quite qualifies as a fairy tale as opposed to a folktale, since it's not supernatural. My favorite supernatural Jewish story is not in Yiddish but in Aramaic -- it's the aftermath to the Oven of Akhnai story, Hi in Bava Metzia 59b, which Rivka tells the protagonist about in the first chapter of The Ghost and the Golem. My favorite Yiddish fairy tale I haven't read, but only read about, is the Bove Mayse, the wildly popular 1507 chivalric romance, adapted into Yiddish by Elijah Levita from the goyish chivalric romance "Buovo d'Antonia", keeping the magic sword, magic horse, and becoming-king happy ending but giving the protagonist a tallis and tefillin, from which the Yiddish word for fairy tale, "bubbeh-mayse", derives. (Which is also an example of my favorite kind of multiple-root etymology, where "bubbeh"=grandmother replaces "Bove"=Bevis of Hampton, Italianized and then Yiddishized.)

maria de mendoza / 𝒐𝒑𝒆𝒏 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒆𝒓. chelsea house, the grey's riverside abode.
It had been many years since Maria had foot on English soil, and now, back in London –– a place she thought only to return with a warrant for arrest looming over her raven head –– the duquesa had grown to relish retracting the steps of her beloved mistress, familiarising herself with the realm Mary Tudor had once called home. The country, this misty prison, to which Catalina de Aragón had surrendered her fealty, had enriched its barren lands with a bevy of stillborn babes and one miraculous daughter to survive infancy –– Mary, la reina, consort of the richest and most powerful dynasty in Europe.
But with la concubina and her bastards imperiously lodged at Hampton Court, Maria had refused to dance attendance unto the Boleyns with her presence; through Spain's ambassador to England, the duchess feigned illness, a fear of unclean airs, and instead accepted an invitation to sojourn at the Grey's riverside manor, Chelsea House, at the generosity of the Suffolk Dowager –– a kinswoman and, perhaps ever more saliently, a devout ( and recusant ) Catholic. With its red-brick terraces, made a pale pink by the late-summer sun, abundant orchards, and lavish knot gardens, Chelsea Place suited the duchess soundly; reminding her, a mere trifle, of the limestone fortresses and bountiful courtyards of Alcalá de Henares, shaded by ancient trees dappled with ripe apricots.
Taking her morning stroll by the river, Maria nodded determinedly, serenely, when her lady's maid –– Donna Beatriz –– informed her that she had received a visitor. She waited by the entrance of the glass-paned greenhouse for her summons, twisting her crimson mouth into a smile. 'I hope you did not find the journey from Court too strenuous.' Raising her hand in greeting, glittering in the light with precious jewels, Maria swept into a curtsy. 'You are kind to visit me here in Chelsea; I admit to finding my lodgings here much more comfortable than by the bustle of court.'
'Come, we shall take clean airs and walk as we speak. Then, you shall join us for dinner, no? Or must you go so soon?'

a letter left carried from dover castle by rider back to hampton court, it is mixed with a bevy of letters sent back home so as to not be considered too odd. it is delivered by page boy's hand to katherine brandon - grey, enclosed within the enevolope is a cut stem of lavender. a few words remain underlined for emphasis, or perhaps another intended meaning. | @katharined
the spectre haunting mine dreams ,
how foolish it is of me to believe i shall miss your company within dover, while i remain plagued each night by the soft touch of your hand against mine skin. there remains no vision i may conjure that compares truly to the beat of your strong, faithful heart nor the intoxicating flush of your pale cheeks. a man may search endlessly throughout the fields of kent and find not even a poor replacement for your soul.
i have enclosed a gift and while lacking in grandeur i hope you may see it for the worth that it truly holds. i believe it to be one of the last blossoms in dover before the frost comes nipping to plunge it under a harsh, unforgiving sort of blanket. it called to me on my walk this morn, as if compelled to cut it's stem and share in it's beauty that reminded me so fiercely of you. a beautiful flower, weathering the harsh, english winters to blossom anew in the spring.
while you are not present to gift me a favor, i humbly request you send one. so that i may hold it close to my heart as i ride in your honor, perhaps unseating a spanish prince for you.
humbly, dutifuly, yours,
 - e.p.

Ralph Lauren draws the fashion crowd to the horsey Hamptons for a diverse show of Americana
BRIDGEHAMPTON, N.Y. — BRIDGEHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) — Ralph Lauren took to Hamptons horse country for a rollout of his signature Americana featuring first lady Jill Biden, Usher and Colman Domingo on his front row and Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington and a bevy of adorable kids on his runway. Horses and riders meandered Thursday night in a nearby field behind a white picket fence at a tony equestrian complex in Bridgehampton as Lauren showed bright tennis whites, baby blue dresses and jackets, and bright orange, green and yellow looks for men, women and the aforementioned tots. The sun faded as the open-air show came to a close and Lauren’s guests made their way to dinner in an on-site pop-up of his iconic Polo Bar restaurant. Lauren, taking his bow with Biden at his side, has fond memories of the Hamptons, where he maintains a home and visited as a child. For his spring 2025 show, a day ahead of the official start of New York Fashion Week, he chose Khalily Stables, a state-of-the-art, 19-acre equestrian compound of stalls, barns, riding arenas and grassy paddocks. Lauren mixed his Ralph Lauren Collection, Purple Label, Polo Ralph Lauren and children’s wear for an extra-long show that stressed wearability on a weather-perfect evening as summer turns to fall. There were picnic looks in soft blue dresses, and white trousers and shorts paired with stripes and jackets. There were evening looks, including a stunning long blush pearled skirt worn by Campbell with a knotted white T-shirt. For the men, Lauren offered skinny cuffed trousers, blue floral dinner jackets and splashes of color blocking in orange pants paired with navy nautical jackets and wide multicolored ties over pinstripe shirts. Whites and blues dominated, with a sprinkling of crochet and khaki. He threw in some sparkle in slinky sequined evening gowns, backless white cocktail dresses and blue blouses, adding a bit of his fairy dust to a pair of torn khaki trousers and other looks. Lauren’s young ones, from preschoolers to tweens and teens, were ready for anything. One wore white shorts and a green slicker worthy of the U.S. Open the company just sponsored in looks for the ball crews and on-court officials. Others wore high riding boots with blue polos and matching pants. Still more were tiny prepsters in pinstripe button downs, navy jackets and cropped white pants. The show, Usher mused afterwards, was “American life. That’s American love. That’s family.” Another of Lauren’s guests, Tom Hiddleston, agreed. “It’s an extremely precise and intelligent vision because you sort of think, I’d like to be a part of that. I’d like to live that,” he said. “Very inspiring.” Domingo added: “You saw literally all different colors and shapes and sizes of people and people feeling like they belong and go together.” Fellow guest Jude Law summed it up this way: “Aspiration for a better place.” Naomi Watts, Kasey Musgraves, Demi Singleton and Justin Theroux were also among Lauren’s guests. So was Kim Min-jeong, known as Winter, from the K-pop girl group Aespa. In his show notes, Lauren said the Hamptons is “more than a place. It’s a natural world of endless blue skies, the ocean, green fields, and white fences, rusticity and elegance with a quality of light that drew artists here decades ago.” He called the summer haven for New Yorkers like himself his home away from home, “my refuge and always an inspiration.” Perhaps Lauren has better luck with the travel gods overseeing New York traffic. Some of his city guests without access to helicopters for hire spent four hours fighting traffic on the way to his show. The company has had a big year. In addition to the U.S. Open, Lauren dressed Team USA for the Paris Games. ___ Associated Press video producer Brooke Lefferts contributed to this story. Source link via The Novum Times

SNEAK-PEAK REVIEW — Edie's first run at Reno Sweeney in New York at the Greenwich Village club, was January 10-14, 1978 but she had a "sneak peak" on January 1-2, 1978.
Tumblr media
The sneak peak was as much to get her ready for paying customers and a bevy of critics lining up to review her, but also for the artistic and marketing staff of the club to see if they had pulled it all off.
To everyone's relief, they had.
Review about this day (January 1, 1978).
Review July 17, 1998 from Michael Braverman a good friend to Little Edie.
She always wanted to perform cabaret.
On the evening of January 1, 1978, I went to Reno Sweeney, the renowned Greenwich Village cabaret, to see Edith Bouvier Beale perform.
It was the culmination of a series of events that began a few months before.
(This all took place after the publicity concerning the Board of Health raid on the house, after the movie, after the death of Big Edie, and after most of the cats were gone.)
Edie was a friend.
I used to visit and spend time at Grey Gardens.
There was no pretense about Grey Gardens being anything but a ramshackle old mansion with raccoons in the attic.
Frank Newbold remembers Edie greeting him at the door with a can of Raid to ward off the fleas that were endemic in the house.
I used to carry my own can of flea spray to protect my ankles.
Edie is an intelligent woman and we used to have interesting conversations about her family and about East Hampton history, and we used to look at the extensive collection of old letters and diaries and photographs of the Bouviers.
She had always wanted to be in show business and felt frustrated that she had not been able to pursue a career while caring for her invalid mother.
(Her favorite cats were named “Sonny” and “Cher”.)
Then one day she told me that an agent had phoned her about performing at a nightclub.
I didn’t know what to think. Edie was odd and reclusive, in some ways a prisoner of her past and of her house, living on memories and grocery deliveries from Dreesen’s.
Jacqueline and Lee arranged for her bills to be paid.
I used to bring her things, and Mr. Onassis used to send packages.
Once, Edie wanted to send a thank-you note to him for some big boxes from Bergdorf’s, and in her own form of encryption, to keep it from preying eyes, she wrote in tiny letters on a tiny sheet in a tiny envelope.
But when she took it to the post office, the postmaster told her it was below minimal size for mailing.
Edie was also outgoing, garrulous with the few people she saw on a regular basis, and with the occasional stranger who crossed her life.
She liked going out, although she did not seem to have many opportunities, and I sometimes took her to dinners and to parties.
People liked her—she was, I thought, a natural storyteller and entertainer.
She responded unconventionally, but fetchingly, to people in a room or at a table, and people reacted to her.
I could picture her with an audience, but I could not picture her in the hard and possibly cruel world of New York cabarets.
So, with mixed feelings, I found myself driving her into New York one day for an audition at Reno Sweeney.
Edie sang, did a little soft shoe, then we all talked.
youtube
The management at the club seemed sincere to me.
I didn’t expect them to be listening to an unusual middle-aged lady just for her singing abilities—we all knew the score—but I wanted to feel that they weren’t interested only in exploiting the family connections.
And I left thinking that in these strange circumstances it was about as good a situation as one could expect.
Edie called Jackie to tell her. Jackie’s response, as related to me, was that she preferred Edie avoid publicity and not perform, but if it were something so important to Edie, she would certainly not stand in the way. It was, I thought, a wise and kind answer.
On her opening night, Edie sang—familiar songs like “Tea for Two” and “As Time Goes By”, and two songs she had composed, one of which she said was written for me.
She danced a little—that was her real talent, she used to tell me.
She answered questions and chatted with the audience.
It went well. People genuinely liked her.
Jackie sent her a note.
Lee sent flowers.
Edie said “This is something I’ve been planning since I was 19 years old—I’m just going to have a ball.” She did, and so did everyone in the room.

race & medieval studies
This list mostly reflects the topic of my thesis (Saracens in fifteenth century English romance) & is not exhaustive by any means. I doubt that many of these are available without a university library subscription, but I am sure I can figure something out.
The field:
Bruce W. Holsinger, ‘Medieval Studies, Postcolonial Studies, and the Genealogies of Critique’ in Speculum, 77.4 (2002), 1195-1227
Joshua Davies, 'The Middle Ages as property: Beowulf, translation, and the ghosts of nationalism' in postmedieval 10.2 (2019), 137-150
Shookofeh Rajabzadeh, ‘The depoliticized Saracen and Muslim erasure’ in Literature Compass 16.9-10 (2019)
Monographs / collections:
Michael Camille, The Gothic Idol: Ideology and Image-Making in Medieval Art (1991); specifically the chapters on non-Christian engagement with images
The Postcolonial Middle Ages, ed. Jeffrey Jerome Cohen (2000)
The Origins of Racism in the West, ed. Miriam Eliav-Feldon, Benjamin Isaac, and Joseph Ziegler (2009)
Suzanne Colkin Akbari, Idols in the East. European Representations of Islam and the Orient, 1100-1450 (2009); a personal favourite
Philippa Hardman and Marianne Ailes, The Legend of Charlemagne in Medieval England. The Matter of France in Middle English and Anglo-Norman Literature (2017); very clear on the role of historical and manuscript contexts in shaping the meaning of different versions of the same story
Special issues:
Arthuriana 16.4 (2006), on Saracens; with the exception of Donald Hoffman's article, which is terrible
postmedieval 6.1 (2015), on 'Making Race Matter in the Middle Ages'
Miscellaneous articles:
John F. Cartwright, ‘Basilisks, Brahmins and other Aliens: Encountering the Other in Sir Gilbert Hay’s Alexander’ in Studies in Scottish Literature 26.1 (1991), 334-342; a slightly obscure member of a very well-known group of romances
Bonnie J. Erwin, ‘A Good Woman Is Hard to Find: Conversion and the Power of Feminine Desire in Bevis of Hampton’ in Exemplaria 23.4 (2011), 368-89
Erik Wade, ‘Ower Felaws Blake: Blackface, Race, and Muslim Conversion in the Digby Mary Magdalene’ in Exemplaria 31.1 (2019) 22-45
