"Come on, you're cold." The light jacket she wore was held open in an inviting sort of way and though it was beneath the dignity of my ancestors, I clambered up onto her lap and into her arms. My ancestors were dead, their dignity need not have any bearing on my choices...and I was cold.

Writebr Garden's Advent Calendar Event
"Please can you make it snow just a little more? It's one of my favorite things in the whole world...when it falls like in the best Christmas movies. Do you know what movies are? Probably not, huh? Well can you make it snow gently with a ton of snowflakes?" Sam whispered to the large knotted pine beside her in such a hopeful tone that it nearly cracked my heart in two. "The wind is uncooperative today." The tree told me with lingering sadness in his creaking tone, sharing in my wish to make Sam happy even though neither of us understood what was so important about her request. I whispered to him for a time, asking his permission and with it granted I lay quiet and still to wait. After a few moments of concentration, Jen finally interrupted with a small clearing of her throat. "Whatchya doing?"
"Asking the tree for snow, Bryn says the forest folk talk too just not the same way we do." Sam answered, "Now shhhh! I'm trying to concentrate on what he's saying." I was pleased to hear she had taken my comment seriously and then immediately surprised when Jen chuckled and approached rather than shaking her head as she often did when such topics came around. "Well tree, I think you'll have to help my sister understand that the snow comes from the sky and not trees." From my perch I saw Sam open her mouth to return the playful teasing, for that's all it really was, and before she could get a word out I kicked one of the branches which sent a cascade of snow down on Jen with a freezing plop!
She gasped sharply and sweet little Sam fell into the pillowy snow laughing like she was going to burst. Jen tried to look angry but the intensity of her laughter proved too much to contain. Instead she started packing a snowball that had Sam running and the chase was on. I bounced carefully on each branch as I leapt tree to tree, a few feet ahead of them always. The snow rained down just as Sam asked and I knew right then as I saw Jen's eyes sparkle with the reflection of thousands of flakes like tiny stars in their own infinate galaxy, laughter echoing around the forest, what was so special about snow.

Character Voice Tag Game
Rules: Rewrite the line of dialogue from the person who tagged you into the voice of your OC’s! (You can include a short beat of action to help establish character if you want.) Pass on the tag with a new line of dialogue.
Thanks @mauvelilywilliams for the tag! The prompt I got was 'I want it.' I decided to do this for Bryn, the narrator of my WIP.
I gazed in the foggy glass window at the two girls curled on the couch, Jennifer reading while Sam doodled up and down her sister's arm with the edges of her fingertips. She paused this wonderous art only to interject occasional commentary on the characters imagined before them. With my paws sinking in the cold damp moss of the rotting sill I had a singular and defining thought; If this is family, I want it.
Gently tagging: @thesorcerersapprentice, @little-peril-stories, and anyone else who is interested
Your prompt is: Try, try, try again

OC in 15 or Fewer
Thank you @little-peril-stories and @blind-the-winds for tagging me! 😁
Rules: Share 15 or fewer lines of dialogue from an OC, ideally lines that capture the character/personality/vibe of the OC. Bonus points for just using the dialogue without other details about the scene, but you're free to include those as well!
The first 10 lines I have here are directly from Nowhere to Nowhere but I also included some lines from a winter based prompt I did for an @writeblrgarden event to show a lighter side of Bryn the narrator that the story hasn't gotten to yet.
1. Jagged bark and gnarled roots, swollen in certain places like arthritic digits indicated an uncountable age...a fact I was reminded of when I'd climbed up there.
2. Instead I looked down at those foolish girls and acted foolishly myself.
3. I landed in her arms yes, but I didn't jump willingly.
4. The indignities of that day seemed to have no end as I hung there with my back half and tail dangling haplessly while my front half was getting the life squeezed out of it by a ten year old human girl.
5. The words bled from me, staining every inch of my patchy wiry fur and instructing it to stand up in guarded attention.
6. My patchy paw over Sam's hand and my tail wrapped around Jen's wrist.
7. It was a simple reminder that I, a fellow living thing, needed air to my lungs as much as she.
8. They would take my girls and leave me broken.
9. I wish to note that the descriptors here are accurate to Thorn's time not to present, do not laugh at the idea of a 'massive' village.
10. I hissed as a splash of stagnant water hit my already drenched fur. It happened at such a frequency that I was beginning to suspect malicious intent.
11. From my perch I saw Sam open her mouth to return the playful teasing, for that's all it really was, and before she could get a word out I kicked one of the branches which sent a cascade of snow down on Jen with a freezing plop!
12. The snow rained down just as Sam asked and I knew right then as I saw Jen's eyes sparkle with the reflection of thousands of flakes like tiny stars in their own infinite galaxy, laughter echoing around the forest, what was so special about snow.
13. Anything made by the hand of humans, has the heart of humans as well...so it's good thing I'm a cat.
14. "The wind is uncooperative today." The tree told me with lingering sadness in his creaking tone, sharing in my wish to make Sam happy even though neither of us understood what was so important about her request.
15. I bounced carefully on each branch as I leapt tree to tree, a few feet ahead of them always.

First Line Tag
Sorry this took so long to get to! Thank you @little-peril-stories for the tag!
Rules: Share a first line! It can be the first line of a chapter, the first line you did in the most recent writing session, the first line of a story, the first line a character says, any kind of first line!
I decided to share the first line of Nowhere to Nowhere 😁
They were foolish, I thought, for going that way where getting eaten by one of the Forest Folk was quite possible.

The Writeblr Garden's Pumpkin Pitch!
Thank you @writeblrgarden for hosting this event!!
Tumblr media
Bryn, the faerie cat, recounts how he met two girls after they wandered through a lone gate in the woods and into his world. He opens their eyes to the magic not only of the Forest Folk but also of the City Faeries, the ones responsible for your lost car keys!
Writing Snippet #2
"Yeah," I felt Sam nod her head while she stroked my shoulders soothingly. "I made sure it was completely latched Kitty. We can take you there and you'll see that we really did do it." While one sister made reassuring promises in my ear, the other turned back the way they had come. "It'll be dark in a couple hours, we'd better go." And with those words, Sam began toting me along as if I weighed nothing. My opinion on the matter was not called for and I didn't care to give it for fear of losing my nerve. I knew a great many things they did not, one of the most relevant being that the path had already changed and would lead them in circles until all of their energy was sapped from them. Their exhausted husks would fall to the ground and be shortly devoured by the Forest Folk, who would claim it as a delicious victory.

Writebr Garden's Advent Calendar Event
||Writing Snippet/Excerpt||
"And what will you do when all of the humans come to cut up this forest in search of their lost? Will you rain destruction down on them also?" I demanded, "Thorn committed no crime and neither have I!" My words were treasonous but truthful, in so far as I believed.
"Who's Thorn?" Sam's sleepy voice teetered on the edge of a yawn. "And why are you yelling?" Until she asked, I hadn't realized that I had in fact been raising my voice. My fur was spiked, my back arched, and my head was as twisted as my growling jaws.
The lurking beasts darted forward and engulfed Sam even as I put my claws to work shredding their backs. Her scream echoed through the vast forest, tangling my gut with guilt and worry. "It's the shadows Jenny!!" Jennifer was awake in an instant, shooting to her feet and fumbling with the zipper of her jacket. She pulled out a small flashlight and turned it on the writhing mass holding her sister in a deadly grip. The pitiful beam burned away a small portion, just enough to see Sam's frightened and tear stained face for a few seconds before it was swallowed up again. In an instant she and the shadows were gone, leaving Jennifer and I panicked and alone.

Writebr Garden's Advent Calendar Event
The beginning of a found family from my WIP Nowhere to Nowhere
I stayed close through the night, unable to surrender them to the Forest Folk. My patchy paw over Sam's hand and my tail wrapped around Jen's wrist. They were like fragile autumn leaves clinging to a branch swaying in the wind, too much pressure and they would be swept away.
Sticky little tendrils of grass slithered up and wrapped themselves over first a shoe, then a leg, and up to the girls' stomachs. I knew that Sam and Jen would feel nothing unordinary, remaining undisturbed in their rest. Never returning home. Never able to question what had stopped their blood or their breath. Cruelest of all, I knew I would be unbothered by the tendrils. They would take my girls and leave me broken.
I pulled my lips back into a snarl, gnashing my teeth over each blade until all were shredded lifeless ribbons at my feet. There was to be no rest for me that night however; just as I had finished one task another took its place. The trees beside me shook their branches like a beacon, its calling spread by little chittering creatures and even the wind itself.

Heads Up, 7 Up Tag
I am finally wading through my mentions, been a busy couple weeks for me! Thank you @blind-the-winds and @aziz-reads for the tags!
Here are the last 7 lines I've written for Nowhere to Nowhere. If you want to catch up on previous snippets, I tag them all with #bffwrites!
For all her prospective faults, Jennifer understood the comfort of occasional bouts of silence.
I pressed my face against her cheek and jaw before settling in the crook of her neck with one paw resting tenderly on either side of her throat. My back paws rested against her stomach, leaving their smeared and muddied prints behind on the light fabric of her shirt.
Much later I would learn from Sam that Jennifer once owned a large plush frog that was her favorite toy for many years. She had apparently held that fabricated amphibian in the same way whenever she was frightened. During an event they named The Big Move, the frog had been lost and Jennifer, who was only eight years old then, had been devastated. I may have been a poor substitute for her sister but I was an exceptional, if unknowing, stand in for the frog.

Find The Vibe
Thank you @aziz-reads for the tag!
May I present, 'My characters are being wrapped in a blanket right now' from my wip Nowhere to Nowhere
Jennifer tightened her grip on me and lay her ear against my shoulder as she walked, albeit awkwardly, to a cluster of large moss covered boulders resting in the sunshine. She settled us down on the soft moss and curled her body around mine without a word spoken.

Rewrite Game
Rules: rewrite the last line of the person who tagged you however you want, then give your last line for other people to try!
Thanks @faeriecinna for the tag!
Original Line
He squeezed her hands gently, resisting the urge to run his thumb over the white of her knuckles. Standing, he gave her one last glance, this time met with her grey eyes staring back at him. The glimmering teardrop was still drying in a streak down her face like gold dust.
Rewrite
Hands clasped each other in a desperate bid for comfort, a distinct yearning in eyes like weathered stone that met for only a fraction of a second before the moment crumbled. If her tears were as gold, he was bitterly cursed with Midas' touch.
My Line
She had apparently held that fabricated amphibian in the same way whenever she was frightened. During an event they named The Big Move, the frog had been lost and Jennifer, who was only eight years old then, had been devastated. I may have been a poor substitute for her sister but I was an exceptional, if unknowing, stand in for the frog.

Thank you @little-peril-stories for the tag!
This turned out to be a last snippet since I'm a sucker for context hahaha! From my WIP Nowhere to Nowhere, see my writing page for more 😁
Thorn was not the only faerie to explore the new structures with their accompanying culture, but he was one of the boldest. With as big as the world was to Thorn, he greatly preferred sailing to walking. A boat made of woven berry vines with three large leaves to serve as sails was his pride and joy. He gave it the noble name Blackberry's Branch and invited any who would wish to come along, though it was Esker who volunteered nearly everytime.
"Good morning!" Esker called, he was alike to Thorn in height but with a sturdier build and skin of mottled stone. "I've brought another journal and refilled my paints. Do you think we'll speak to them today?"
"I think today is as good as any to show ourselves." Thorn agreed.
