Lucas and Max both being Bi but realizing it because of each other...

Like Max, who grew up in San Diego and LA, knows all the lingo and has met queer people and is very aware of the LGBT movement. But who also spent years in an abusive household where her step-father didn’t approve of anyone who doesn’t fit his idea of normal, and who knows her mom already wishes she was more traditionally feminine.* And she claims she doesn’t care what they think, but supporting the movement in spite of them and being queer herself are two very different things and the latter is significantly scarier. Besides, she fell so hard and so fast for Lucas that all those fleeting crushes she had as a kid couldn’t have really meant anything.

Meanwhile Lucas has his family’s support no matter what, he knows there’s nothing he could do to lose their love. But he grew up in rural Indiana. He knows what being gay is, but that’s the extent of his knowledge. As far as he’s aware he’s never even met a queer person! And he knows he’s not gay, he’s in love with Max, so that settles that for him and he never puts any more thought into it. 

Until one day they’re hanging out and Lucas is talking about one of his teammates and just going on and on about how cool he is and Max jokingly asks “Should I be jealous?” but he laughs it off “I mean, he’s a total heartthrob, but I’m not gay so you’ve got nothing to worry about.” She rolls her eyes “You do know it’s not all or nothing, right?” Lucas blinks “What?” And Max sort of sits up and looks at him more seriously “You know you can like girls and guys right? The option isn’t just gay or not gay.” And it’s like this whole new world has opened up for him and sooner rather then later he starts to realize that, yes, he loves Max, but if she wasn’t around maybe he would also be interested in guys.

And months later they’re watching a movie, and Max starts just gushing about how much she loves the female lead (in my head the movie is Alien), and Lucas teases her about having a crush, and Max rolls her eyes “You’re the one who’s bi Sinclair, not me.” And Lucas sort of shrugs “Are you sure?” “Yes I’m sure. I’m the one who explained bisexuality to you, I think I’d know if I was bi too.” “Okay, okay,” Lucas puts his hands up “Just, you know, if you were it’d be fine.” And Max rolls her eyes again and goes back to the movie, but that small reassurance was all she needed and now that it’s in her head she can’t stop thinking about it because maybe she isn’t sure. And for the first time since she’s been old enough for it matter she’s in a situations that’s safe enough for her to explore the idea and ask questions and realize that maybe there was a reason she’d become sort of obsessed with that one Star Trek actress despite her only being in one episode.

It doesn’t change anything, they’re still head over heals for each other, but they learn more about themselves and feel more confident in their identities. 

*All comments about Max’s home life are drawn from Runaway Max. The writers of the show sort of ignored parts of the book, but it was originally intended to be canon, and these elements specifically aren’t contradicted.

really the only het ship dynamic is 'whip-smart slightly scary lady who could definitely kill you and no one would never find your body' and 'himbo who comes across as dumb sometimes but is actually pretty smart too and could also kill you but is a cinnamon roll so probably wouldn't unless you hurt his gal'

the entire cast of characters in stranger things are able to balance fighting monsters from an alternate dimension and being gay as hell. nobody is truly doing it like them

i kinda have never seen the appeal of bi4bi ships like i get why people like it in theory but whenever it happens (and it happens so rarely the only two times i've seen it like canonically it was fangs and toni in riverdale which..was the most boring couple ever and big red and ahslyn in hsmtmts and like. the biphobia allegations the writers got for the way they wrote big red in s4 were kinda deserved and for me to be saying that it has to be bad. like it was just weird. but anyway just not ships i care about and them being bi didn't change anything at all in their relationship) they're portrayed exactly like any other m/f ship so it's like. it's nice to have characters who aren't straight for sure but if their queerness isn't gonna add anything to the relationship i would rather have a gay couple😭
