Dark Skin Directory
I did one of these for my sideblog BlackFemmeCharacterDependency (BFCD) and... While it’ll take longer on this end to do because there are more prominent figures here than on that one, I thought it would be good to also have one for my main...
EDIT: Okay, so the one that I did for BFCD does not work, so I am posting this one to see if it works, and if not, they’ll both be WIPS until I have the time to repair them

I feel like the people that are saying the dancers don't move cohesively are just bothered by the fact that BEYONCÉ chose to higher true diversity with this troop of Dancers..she got the thickest dancer(Amari marshall) to the Tiniest dancer(Honey balenciaga).......and I saw someone say the weight difference is distracting and honestly thats the most ignorant thing I've ever read
I feel like the only dancers from the last tour that can keep up with this new troop in terms of energy and sharpness is Dnay, Bianca Brewton and Tacir maybe even Ashley cause shes versatile however the renaissance dancers have a certain hunger and fire...they are so versatile and in my opinion they properly represent what Renaissance is-A REBIRTH
Top 10 new fave dancers on the tour for me:
KYNDALL HARRIS(her energy reminds me of Tacir, Dnay & Aisha francis)
NERITA MCFARLANE
TRINITY JOY
AAHKILAH CORNELIUS
HONEY BALENCIAGA(doll)
AMARI MARSHALL
DARIUS HICKMAN(Doll)-i noticed hes featured a lot with both female and male dance sections lol
ALIYA JANELL
JUS'T CHASE
ROB BYNES
The weight difference is distracting?! That’s making me mad ngl lmao I wish I had more to add to y’all’s list 😭 maybe I’ll break and watch some clips after school’s out 😭

Well, nothing like channeling Christmas a little early . . .
Gets it all over and done with . . .
A frightfully post-post modern Christmas it is too . . .
So many twists and references . . .
I suppose I would have to watch it frequently for several decades and really do my homework to catch them all . . .
But . . .
That’s Hollywood . . .
Particularly during Christmas madness . . .
Enjoy . . .

How Lovecraft Country Uses Topsy and Bopsy to Address Racist Caricatures
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
The following contains spoilers for Lovecraft Country episode 8.
Lovecraft Country puts racism at the forefront of its storytelling. Anti-Blackness is as much a character as Leti and Tic. It manifests in many ways on the show, through the protagonists’ engagement with white characters and the systems they control. And through characters like Ruby, whose internalized racism sometimes puts them odds with their own. Anti-Blackness takes on a specific visual language in episode 8, “Jig-A-Bobo”, when Diana is chased by malevolent “pickaninnies”.
Diana runs away from the line to view the body of her deceased best friend, Emmet “Bobo” Till, which no one notices. She is left alone and unprotected by all of the adults in her life and is cursed by Captain Lancaster as a result. She’s beset upon by specters only she can see, they pursue her incessantly, and she can’t tell anyone about them. The ghouls takes the form of Topsy (and Bopsy, as there are two), the original “pickaninny” caricature, who was first introduced in the anti-slavery novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin.
Written by white female abolitionist Harriet Beecher Stowe and published in 1852, Uncle Tom’s Cabin tells the story of Uncle Tom, a noble and dignified Christian slave. On a riverboat to New Orleans to be sold by auction, Tom rescues angelic little white girl, Little Eva, when she falls overboard. Grateful, her father Augustine St. Clare purchases Tom, and he and Eva become great friends. On Eva’s deathbed, she asks her father to free all his slaves, which he plans to do, but dies in a freak accident before he can. Tom is sold to brutal Sam Legree, and is eventually whipped to death after refusing to divulge the whereabouts of two female runaways. Uncle Tom’s Cabin sought to garner sympathy for slaves and support for abolition, by expressing the depravity of slavery, which it did successfully.
Topsy is only a minor character, but her cultural impact is clear. She is described in the book as “eight or nine years old, and, besides being very black, had round shining eyes, glittering as glass beads, and wooly hair braided into little tails, which stuck out in every direction.” She was dressed in rags, and spoke in broken English, and is described as an “imp of darkness.” Ironically, her mischievousness, and the fact that she’s a thief was meant to reflect intellectual capability. However the Topsy caricature was subsequently made popular through minstrel shows and films, which depicted her as humorous instead of sympathetic. That pervasive negative image of Black kids as simple and unkempt still persists, from the serialized and bastardized Sambo, to the Little Rascal Buckwheat.
In the show, Topsy (Kaelynn Harris) and Bopsy (Bianca Brewton) take the picaninny image to its frightening extreme. Their wide mouths—big enough to eat watermelon and fried chicken—are carved into sinister smiles that expose jagged teeth. Their rhythmic movement is punctuated and animalistic. Their eyes glow. When they get close to Dee, their nails grow to talons. They embody so many horror tropes, and make for some of the most straightforward horror antagonists in the series. They are made more frightening because they so accurately reflect the racist imagination they are a product of.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Topsy and Bopsy are what all Black children look like to racist white folks, something wicked and less than human. It is possible Lancaster chose this specific imagery to project his vision of Diana onto her. But it is more likely that Diana, in response to the trauma of losing her best friend to racial violence, manifested her fear of what she looks like to the outside world as an angry, tired, traumatized, Black girl.
It is, after all, the contorted features of illustrated Topsy on the cover of Uncle Tom’s Cabin having smashed Little Eva’s head against a mirror, that first alerts Diana to the ominous presence. Diana is literally running away from all of the worst stereotypes about Black girls, and has to constantly avoid being touched by them. Lovecraft Country continues to make racial horror literal by giving form to the unspoken fears Black folks carry.

Let's get this out of the way. I'll never in no amount of lifetimes give a damn about Harriet Beecher Stowe's book Uncle Tom's Cabin. I always hated it the end lol Topsy's image became the template for the pickaninny in print and Minstrel shows after appearing in Uncle Tom's Cabin. Misha Green did her thing with this episode. Production "Finesse" was co-written by Bruno Mars, Philip Lawrence, Christopher Brody Brown, James Fauntleroy, Johnathan Yip, Ray Romulus, Jeremy Reeves and Ray McCullough II. Its production was handled by the former three under their alias Shampoo Press & Curl, along with the latter four as The Stereotypes. Mars, Lawrence, Brown and Fauntleroy served as the song's background vocalists. The recording was done and engineered by Charles Moniz with additional engineering assistance by Jacob Dennis at Glenwood Place Studios in Burbank, California. It was mixed at MixStar Studios in Virginia Beach by Serban Ghenea, with John Hanes serving as mixing engineer. Tom Coyne mastered the song at Sterling Sound in New York City.[6] Composition The album version borrows its style from R&B and new jack swing.[7][8] It was described by The New York Times as "taking the leap from 1984 to ’88, with crackling drum machine production."[9] In its turn, the remix is dubbed as a funk and new jack swing song. Critics have it compared to Michael Jackson's "Remember The Time".[10] The song is written in the key of F minor Chart performance Following the release of the remix which features Cardi B and its official music video on January 4, 2018 at midnight, "Finesse" launched at number 35 on the US Billboard Hot 100 for the issue dated January 13, 2018. "Finesse" entered the Billboard Hot Digital Songs chart at number 13 with just one day sales of 30,000 according to Nielsen Music, drew in 8.7 million streams from the time of its release, and also received early radio support allowing it to enter Billboard's Radio Songs chart at number 49 with 26 million audience impressions. After its first complete tracking week, "Finesse" soared to number three on the Hot 100 marking Bruno Mars' fifteenth and Cardi B's fourth top 10 single on the Hot 100. The song climbed 13-2 on the Digital Songs chart selling 87,000 copies in its second week. The song also debuted at number one on the Streaming Songs chart with 38.3 million US streams, a 342% incline from the previous week, and climbed 49-12 on Radio Songs with an overall 52 million audience impressions. Mars also made history as becoming the second male artist in Hot 100 history, the first being Lionel Richie, and sixth overall, to achieve three top-10s from each of his first three studio albums.[11] In the same week, Cardi B also made history as becoming the first female artist to simultaneously hold three positions in the top ten for 3 consecutive weeks. "Finesse" has so far peaked at number three for seven non-consecutive weeks on the Hot 100. Finesse allowed Mars to pass The Weeknd, becoming the act with the third-most number one song on the Rhythmic Songs chart this decade.[12] On the Radio Songs chart, "Finesse" peaked at number one, becoming Mars' eight number one on the Radio Songs. Among men, Mars passed Usher for the most leaders among male acts, since the chart's 1990 start. At that time, Rihanna led the list with 13 songs peaking at number one on the chart.[13] Worldwide, it reached the top of the charts in Croatia and Israel, and the Top 10 in Australia, Belgium, Bolivia, Canada, El Salvador, Ireland, Latvia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom. Music video The music video for the remix of "Finesse" premiered on January 4, 2018 and was directed by Mars and Florent Dechard and produced by Media Magik Entertainment.[14] The video pays homage to the opening theme of the popular FOX sketch comedy television series In Living Color, which ran from 1990 to 1994.[15] The video received 13 million views within the first two days of release.[16] It features Phil Tayag, Danielle Polanco, Bianca Brewton, TJ Lewis and Ysabelle Capitulé as dancers.[17] Live performances "Finesse" was performed live by Mars in the Apollo Theater alongside the rest of 24K Magic for his CBS prime time special titled "Bruno Mars: 24K Magic Live at the Apollo", which aired on November 29, 2017.[18][19] The remixed version of the song was performed live by Mars and B at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards.[20] At the 2018 iHeart Music Awards, Cardi B sang a medley of her singles, including "Finesse".[21] "Finesse" is the opening song on the 24K Magic World Tour.
