Poetry prompt: Winter and light

This came to me journaling a few days ago-

How To Embrace Discomfort

The desire for change is so strong now.  It is not boredom, it is not an emotionally charged, hormone fueled decision.  It is a rational decision I made when I realized I did not want to die this way, with no say on the outcome of my life.  

I have to see with new eyes that do not strain at darkness, touch with new hands that do not flinch at rough, sharp textures, feel my heart reset its rhythm - like a hibernating creature awakening from its long sleep, who lived off the weight of its excess fears while sleeping and hiding.  

I am afraid of the Dark of New Decisions, the deep, unknowable waters you jump into and their bracing cold.  What awaits me?  Are the mythic monsters of my most fantastic anxieties truly as terrible and horrific as I anticipate them to be?  Do I drown or find the strength to paddle to an island that suddenly emerges, though it has been there the whole time?

Are the stars above or the silver flashing fish below actually angels-in-waiting, watching me, guiding me in this time when I feel adrift on these inky seas?

What I do know, is that in winter everything becomes so clear in its crisp, snapping light.  I can be cold and terrified, but excited and enchanted all at the same time with my decision.  Every great adventure begins with desire and a bit of discomfort.

Five on Friday

I enjoy how poets can make me feel so many different things. Here are a few that made me feel this week. Perhaps they will make you feel something too.

Some personal things that made me smile:

1. A few weeks ago, I mentioned a rough patch with a friend. The ugly bit resurfaced, but I think we’ve finally managed to settle things. At least, I’m feeling pretty good about it and I think they are too. 2. Gifts in the mail! 3. One of my school books was taking forever to arrive, but the bookstore finally emailed me that my order was in. I feel better when I am prepared for class. 4. Speaking of classes - my Comparative Literature professor told us we would find the first section of Swann’s Way incredibly boring. And he was right. At first. But as I have continued to read, I feel more. I don’t know how to explain it except that it makes me feel something. And it’s much more interesting than I originally thought. The lesson: don’t judge a book by it’s cover, so to speak. 5. I received a really cool ask here on Tumblr. It was poem and I loved it!

Wow, thank you! I am happy with them too, and give credit to a good camera (Cannon Rebel) and steady hand-eye coordination. I might not be good at video games, but I can track a shot through my lens! On the poster/book cover note, I am in the process of organizing my photos by categories (rather than by dates and states, as they are now) so that I can put together some coffee-table books of my best/favorite shots. 

I will be sure to post a link to the listing in my online store when it's up. Maybe by Thanksgiving/Christmas if all things go well. :)
