The memory of befriending Tate was a clear to Billie as her recollection of the blueberry pancakes she’d ingested that morning. She often liked to think back to when they were but children. She was but cheeks that always seemed flushed and double plaits that did a lively dance when she moved and he was just missing teeth and gangly limbs. Billie knew from the moment he offered his last yellow crayon -- because the sun in her drawing simply wasn’t bright enough -- that she’d found herself a lifelong friend. It was perhaps a surprisingly serious declaration for a six year old to make but now twenty five years later and their friendship remained. 

She only had to think of their childhood days to inspire a smile and feel a warmth spreading through my chest. If she closed her eyes she could visualize the two of them on their old street, him in short pants and her in a Sunday dress she was all set to ruin. She recalled the mud pies and the wars waged on the swarm of fire ants who dared infiltrate their territory. She remembered her Grams half burnt biscuits that they ate like it was going out of style. She could see them laughing at the back of class until their sides ached from the exertion. Billie could meet a million fabulous people, all of them with interesting lives and philanthropic deeds, and not one of them could replace him. 

There were probably a number of more sensible things a woman of thirty two could be doing with her time other than constructing what she believed to be a most excellent blanket fort in the living room. However, Billie was not in the business of the mundane and Tate’s couch cushions were the perfect size to stabilize her mountain of draped comforters and throws. Tate shouldn’t have been surprised to arrive home and find her bare feet sticking out from beneath the plush haven. When the sound of his footsteps met her ears her freshly painted toes were drawn in and quickly replaced by her beaming visage. “Oh, Taetae, welcome home” her tone held a note of casualness but it was expected. “I would like to formally request you join me in Fort Blanket posthaste, where we are the masters of peace - strong of spirit and generous of heart” her features disappeared into the structure briefly before popping back out seconds later. “I’ve also got pizza and you better hurry cause Chaplin’s been eyeing your half”
