I rewatched Toy Soldiers tonight for the first time in nearly a decade. Most people don’t realize that half a million of my overall approaching 4 million words of fic are devoted to this weird, underappreciated 1991 film.
With this story, time does not necessarily heal all wounds. My heart still shatters.
(Maybe I need to reread The Series/Book of Hours, in the hope that rereading will feel like the writing I did all those years ago to mend what’s broken—or what breaks without end.)

Character/Movie List
Below is movies and TV shows I like personally and are lsited as a reference. If you don't see something you're interested in, it is not that I don't like it, it is because I most likely forgot it because I love so many movies/shows tbh. Just ask, and I'll answer! And, from the Rules and Regulations page, what I had meant by "mostly" is that I can dabble outside of the acting world and into actors/actresses themselves and/or singers, popstars, etc.
{Another side-note, I am not so much into shows, but mostly movies! Although, there are some exceptions that I love beyond belief!}

So, I spent the last 5 days of sitting around with this serious arm injury rereading the very first epic fic series I ever wrote. Although the posting dates on the below chapters are all 18 November 2013, the reality is that these were originally posted as individual stories on LiveJournal throughout the entirety of 2004 and into the spring of 2005. Those were my junior and senior years of college. This series was the last thing I relocated from LJ to AO3, and I was too exhausted to do a proper comb-through for typos and minor formatting issues.
Well, that state of things is no more. I cleaned up all of the editorial issues during this week’s rewatch-the-film-and-reread-my-fic binge. I also changed the names of a few of the chapters (they’re really stories strung together), although not drastically. The chapter called “Clippings” used to be called “Business,” “Spiral” used to be called “You Must Listen to Me Now,” and “Closer to Fine” used to be called “The Middle of Things.”
I had an ask a few days ago along the lines of: What the hell is Toy Soldiers, anyway? On the surface, it’s a 1991 action movie/teen drama. It stars a young Sean Astin and Wil Wheaton as Billy Tepper and Joey Trotta, the central protagonists among the cast of younger characters. At the time I saw it in early 2004, I had only ever seen Sean Astin in The Lord of the Rings. And, incredibly, I didn’t even know who Wil Wheaton was.
That might be one reason I was able to take this film to heart so earnestly (i.e. I completely lacked knowledge of Wesley Crusher, Wheaton’s Star Trek character from around that time who it was traditional to mock, although I still don’t get why). However, the primary reason this film wrecked the back end of my 2004 spring break was that I had watched The Celluloid Closet for the first time only days before watching Toy Soldiers.
I challenge any queer person to watch this documentary (about the Hays Code and the horrible fate met by queer-coded and queer characters in cinema) and this under-appreciated action film back to back and come out of it without feeling devastated and furious about what happens to Billy and Joey. Especially to Joey. And now, in an era of rampant school shootings and hostage situations, Toy Soldiers hits with even more gravity than it did in the 1990s and early 2000s.
These boys are where it started for me. Every every horrific canon media ending that has ever made me furious, every hundreds-of-thousands-of-words long fix-it series I’ve written in the past 19 years, can be traced back to this moment. This string of stories was what I wrote before I ever wrote the likes of Crown of Thorns (Good Omens), Anthology (Pacific Rim), and Delicate, Dangerous, Obsessed (Gotham). Hell, one of my instrumental original characters in CoT appeared for the first time at the end of Book of Hours before I ever thought to use her in a Good Omens context.
This story has meant the world to me even though the fandom around it at the time of writing, and even now, was never more than about 20 people. Most of those people are still with me, the dearest friends I could ever hope to have 💙

Here we go: my first brand new work in this fandom in like a decade, FML. This is a stand alone fic; first two chapters out of six are live.
TEASER:
“Listen, man, I’m really sorry,” Joey said. “It’s just…I don’t know where everybody went.”
Billy shoved his hands in his pockets, his old swagger returning. “Does it really matter?”
“I don’t know about you,” Joey said, jabbing his finger at Billy’s nose, “but I’d rather not get detention for a week because I ditched the group.”
“Please,” Billy said, rolling his eyes. He pulled something out of his back pocket and thwapped it against his palm. “Why go looking for them when you could join me on an adventure instead?” He thwapped his palm a few more times, and Joey realized it was a book.
“Gimme that,” Joey said, snatching it away from him. He realized he was holding the most tattered paperback copy of From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler that he’d seen since the one in his old elementary school library at Immaculate Conception.
“Ever read that?” Billy asked, grinning like he already knew he’d won. “It’s up your alley.”

If I’m wading back into the fire tonight, I’m bringing y’all with me. Before I wrote CoT, I wrote this—and it means every bit as much to me, hard-won as it was.

I thought this fic was finished at 6 chapters, but then anon requested a seventh chapter extending the "Same [X]" titling convention by one more element. I'm all too happy to oblige.
Chapter 7: Same Bed is live. It adds about 2,200 words to the fic.

I'm curious what made you decide to write for the toy soldiers fandom again? Where did you get your inspiration for the new fic?
During Thanksgiving Week, I wanted to continue showing @one-eyed-bossman (i.e. my wife) movies I love that she has never seen. The first one that came to mind was Toy Soldiers. I hadn’t rewatched it in about 7 years.
I rewatch this film sparingly due to how much Billy’s grief wrecks me. In addition to Billy’s grief making me feel my own emotions all over again, it invariably makes me want to revisit my stories.
This time, I think I held it together better than I usually do, but I also got seized by the mad urge to reread all the TS fic I wrote between 2004-2010ish (I wrote a couple of my stand-alones after 2005-2006 due to participating jn the Yuletide Exchange where I knew a couple people had requested TS stories…my track record as one of the only writers for that film got me assigned those people’s requests every single time).
Anyway, I reread all my fic. I saved The Series/Book of Hours for last. No sooner had I finished all that than I got seriously hurt on Thanksgiving day as described in a couple other recent posts, so…I needed distraction from the pain and distress of those wounds. More importantly, I needed to see if they were still with me, if I could find them, if I could hear them.
Fortunately, it seems to have worked. And now I wonder if they’ll recede politely to the background of my headspace again, or…if they’ll want more stories

Your new Toy Soldiers fic is SO GOOD. So happy to see those boys again I was crying ngl. I was wondering if you would take a prompt for a seventh bonus chapter? You left it at a place where they’ve both just arrived at Regis School for the first time and are about to go to the dorm room before their unknown third roommate is due to arrive the next day (or in a couple days? unclear). Anyway, if you are inclined to take my prompt, it is simply that Chapter 7 should follow the titling convention of the other chapters, “Same (X Thing),” and be called “Same Bed” since the two of them share a bunk bed canonically in the film. Smut or not up to you ;)
Oh, anon. How can I possibly say no to that? Give me a couple days 💙

Old question but are you still in the Toy Soldiers fandom?
Absolutely! Once I’ve participated in a fandom, I consider myself always in it. I haven’t written any TS fic in a few years, though. That could change at any moment; I have some older fandoms I come back to every once in a while to add content. It’s unpredictable, is all.

I owe you an apology for being such a lazy reader: I confess that this AO3 archiving is, to me, an embarrassment of riches, as now I'll be able to catch up on everything I was too lazy to dig up on LJ. I have a question for you, too, because you must be digging up so much you haven't thought about in so long - if there was one thing from across your works you would want people to read and remark upon, just one, what would that be?
With all my heart, it would be The Series / Book of Hours.
From 2003 through 2005, this film (Toy Soldiers, 1991), this series, and the novel-length work that ended it (I thought; as you can see, several smaller follow-ups emerged even after BoH itself was over) consumed every spare moment I had.  It’s no lie to say it took half my sanity with it in the process, but I would never trade the experience of wanting to fix so profound a loss and, to my own mind, succeeding, for anything.
So, dear readers, if I ask nothing else of you, I suppose I ask this: watch the film, read this 300,000-word walk into the dark and back out again, and then tell me if the time was wasted.  If the answer was yes, I think I’d really need to hear it.  I held off the archiving for so long, mostly because, even at the time I was actively writing it, TS fandom was tiny, non-existent (much like it is today), and yet I had a devoted audience of maybe six to ten people at any given time who supported me through what is, to this day, the toughest, most thrilling writing project I’ve ever completed (or, indeed, suspect I’ll ever complete).
I rarely wax this sentimental, but few things I’ve written are as deeply a part of my sorrow as they are of my joy in such starkly equal measure.
(Only Crown of Thorns has matched it, I can honestly tell you that.)

More work from years past now on AO3:
All Toy Soldiers content, Series/Book of Hours included, is now up on AO3.
(This would be a neat time to point out that Uriel, an OC who often turns up in my Good Omens fic, was not originally built for use in GO.  Her first appearance ever, eight or nine months before I even started writing GO, was at the very end of Book of Hours.  I needed an Archangel with Dominion Over the Souls of Men, so she came.  And never left.)
