Dust Storm | W.H.B.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
summary: You and Billy get caught up in a dust storm while on a horse ride.
pairing: William H. Bonney x fem!reader
includes: slight angst, fluff, you and billy are engaged, not a lot of warnings 🤷‍♀️ let me know if i missed any !!
a/n: i had this sitting in my drafts for a billion years 😭 my bad bookies
Tumblr media
It had been days since that last dust storm blew in and the spirits in the small county of Talihina, Oklahoma were high. However, there was no rain insight. And with no rain, it left many farmers with empty fields, covered in dried-out dirt and sand. It especially hit the Ashford farm and ranch the hardest.
The Ashfords were the wealthiest family in Talihina. They were well known for being able to run a horse ranch and a healthy farm. The father, James Ashford, was in charge of both the ranch and farm, making sure everything ran smoothly. His wife, Josephina Ashford, better known as Jo, was known for helping around the town and giving to those in need. Luckily for the couple, they had two children who helped them with their work. They had a daughter and a son. You were the eldest Ashford child, and you had a bright future. You resemble your mother in all ways. You were the kind of woman to make young men turn their heads just by walking by. Unfortunately for them, you were happily engaged to one William H. Bonney. On the other hand, your younger brother looked like a replica of your father. Adam Ashford was eight years old with the same determination as his father, hoping to take over the farm and ranch when he got older.
But because of the dust storms starting up two years ago, it was harder to tend to the crops that would grow and bring the horses out of their stables. Before, you would help your father to tend to the horses when you weren't doing volunteer work, but with the constant dust blowing around the whole country, he banned you from leaving the house unless it was absolutely clear from dust. And for the first time in two years, James let his daughter out of the house. Only to run her mother’s errands, of course.
“In case of emergencies,” James tied a red bandana around your wrist as you took your mother’s list and woven basket from the kitchen table. “Wrap this around your head and cover your mouth and nose. I don’t want you to get hurt. And remember to come straight back from the markets—”
“Pa, I’ll be fine.” You squeezed her father’s forearm, kissing his cheek. “I’ll be back before you know it.”
He sighed and shook his head, “Okay.”
You squeezed his arm again before leaving, silently reassuring her safety. You took quick strides to the town center and watched the dust kick up with every step you took. The walk going to town wasn’t bad. The only downside was that there was no shelter for any incoming dust storms. Fortunately, the blazing sun was beating down on the earth and the wind was seemingly absent.
Upon reaching the town center you smiled at the sight in front of you. You found children running around with wooden toys their fathers made and their mothers gossiping about the recent family who left for California. It felt normal. For the first time in years, it felt normal to see mothers scolding their children for messing with drunkards sitting outside of the bars.
You shook your head before entering the town’s only grocery, the bell above the door ringing to alert the storekeeper. “Mr. Taylor?”
“Miss Ashford!” The storekeeper beamed at the young woman. “What brings you into town? I haven’t seen you and your folks for a while.”
You gave him a tight-lipped smile, “With all this dust, I would hardly expect anyone to be hustlin’ ‘round town.”
“What can I do for you?” He dismissed the comment.
“I’m in need of some of your delicious Fuji apples. My ma s'been craving them ever since Adam read a book about them to her.” You looked around the empty store. “Other than that, I can grab the res’ of the things myself.”
“I’ll be right back.” He knocked the wood on the counter, heading toward the back of the store. You watched him leave before heading into the different aisles, glancing at the brands and prices of the different items. In fact, you were so immersed in deciding which brand of vegetable oil would be best that you hadn’t realized someone new had entered the store until a pair of strong arms wrapped around you and spun you off the ground.
“Oh my god!” You clung onto the stranger’s arm, not wanting to fall face-first onto the ground. You glanced back at the stranger before gasping, eyes lighting up at the male. “Billy!”
“Afternoon, gorgeous.” He put you down and kissed your cheek.
You felt your face warm at the name and action, tucking a stray piece of hair behind your ear. “What are you doing here?”
“My ma sent me into town to get money from the bank.” Billy followed you around the store, his gaze flickering across your face. “Then I saw my favorite woman walk into town. I decided I could spare some time to talk to her.”
“Uh-huh.” You spun on your heel and peered into his eyes. “Did you get the money for your folks? Or did you forget?”
“You think so low of me, sweetheart.” He tilted your head up with his finger. “Of course I got the money.”
You hummed, giving him a proper look now. William H. Bonney was once a lanky boy in grade school. But he had definitely grown into himself. He got stronger and taller over the course of two years. The loose clothes he once wore now perfectly fit him, making you flush red each time you saw him. Your eyes then traveled from his fit shirt to his tattered, dust-covered boots. You frowned at the state they were in, but no one could do any better from the current weather the states were currently facing. Finally, you shifted your gaze to meet his eyes once more. His crystal blue eyes were such a beautiful contrast to the dust coating his dark jeans and his wavy brown hair. You swore you could get lost in them if it weren’t for him pulling you back to reality each time.
“You’re staring, gorgeous.” Billy grinned, earning a small scoff from his beloved.
“You’re impossible.” You shoved two bars of soap into your basket, heading toward the counter where the apples were waiting.
Mr. Taylor suppressed a laugh at the young couple, taking the basket from your arms. “That all for today, Miss Ashford?”
You hummed as you took your wallet out of your dress pocket, “How much?”
“$3.42 is the total.” He read off the cash register as you handed him the exact amount, trading it for the baskets of groceries and apples.
“Thank you, Mr. Taylor.” You smiled at him and moved to grab Billy’s hand as you left the store, intertwining them. “What’ve you been up to since I’ve last seen you?”
“Since last week?” Billy pulled you closer to him, squeezing your hand. “ Not much has happened since I visited your place. Just helping my ma in the fields like always.”
You nodded and looked toward the ground, watching the dust cling onto your leather boots and the bottom of your maroon dress. “The dust storm affecting your folks’ farm badly?”
“It’s affecting everyone, sweetheart.” He pulled you away from a stampede of running children. “No one can get any crops.”
“I know…” You muttered, rubbing small circles into his palm. You peered up at the bright sun, squinting at the beam. “You know what I wish for?”
“What?”
“I wish for everything to go back to normal.” You adjusted your hat, the Ashford ranch coming into view. “The dust storms have ruined everyone’s crops. I can barely step foot out of my own house. There hasn’t been any rain since god knows when. My pa won’t let me tend to the horses. It’s madness, Billy.”
“M’sorry, sweetheart.” He kissed the side of your head. “I can’t promise everything will go back to normal, but in the meantime, I can find a way to ride horses with you. ”
“William, what’s that supposed to mean?” You squinted at him, his piercing gaze meeting yours. “Whatever you’re thinking, it’s probably not a good idea—!”
“Come on. We can ride the horses and be back before your folks worry.” He pulled you into the Ashford stables, taking the baskets from your arms and tucking them safely in a corner.
You bit your lip, looking at the groceries and then back at the brunette, cursing him for being so convincing. “Fine.”
Tumblr media
Laughter filled the air as you raced Billy through the back trails of Talihina, the generated wind blowing through your hair. It felt like you were both young teenagers who had no idea they were in love with one another, doing reckless activities until they were caught by one’s parents.
“Pick up the pace, Bonney!” You shouted as you saw Billy catching up, urging your horse to move faster.
A huge amount of dust kicked up with every stride the horses took, and if you looked back, you wouldn’t be able to see anything. Billy shook his head with a smile and copied you, finally riding beside the pair.
“Sweetheart, you know I can beat you in any horse race.” He chuckles as he brings his horse to a stop, wiping the sweat off his forehead. “You feel any better?”
You nodded and glanced to your left as you tugged on your horse’s reins, meeting his blue eyes. “I do feel better. Thank you.”
“Anytime.” He tipped his hat in your direction. “Ready to go back?”
Your smile slowly faded but nodded, “Yeah.”
“Hey, we don’t need to rush. We can take as long as we want to go back if you want.”
“I’d like that.” You guided your horse to head back toward the ranch. “In the meantime, you can tell me all about what you’re gonna do when your ma finds out where you’ve been all day.”
“I can tell her I’ve been with my girl all day.” He bit back a smirk when he saw your cheeks tint pink. “I think my folks love you more than me.”
You shoved his shoulder, your engagement ring glistening in the sun. “They should love me more than you. I think my Pa loves you more than me.”
“Impossible.” Billy took your hand and kissed the back of it.
The young couple took short strides on their horses as the sun slowly faded away. One could argue that the sun was setting, but it was still much too early for the sun to set.
“What time do you have on your watch?” You looked back at the darkening sky, picking up the pace.
“3 PM,” Billy muttered, looking into your panicked eyes. “We gotta go.”
The both of you started to rush your horses back as the wind picked up, dust blowing around them which impaired your vision. You hastily removed the bandana from your wrist and tied it around your head, keeping your balance. Billy kept one hand on the reins and shoved his own bandana up, covering his nose and mouth. The sky was now covered with dust clouds and the wind blew harshly against your backs, the mix of dry dirt and sand hitting their exposed skin.
“Are you okay over there?” Billy shouted over the blowing wind. “Y/N?”
“I’m fine!” You blinked away tears from the dirt that stung your eyes, squeezing your legs to make your horse move faster. You could just barely make out your family’s farm, but with each passing second it became more and more obscure.
“Sweetheart, we have to go to the stables! It’s closer to us than your house!” He veered his horse over to the left.
“I can’t! My folks will worry and—”
“Y/N!” He snaps you out of your spiraling thoughts. “Please!”
You quickly followed him and turned toward the stables. Billy slammed the front doors open, causing chaos to erupt inside. The other horses stood on their hind legs, thrashing as the harsh wind blew the dust inside. You raced inside as Billy jumped off his horse and slammed the stable doors shut, grabbing bales of wheat and shoving them by the front. You took deep breaths as you tried calming your own horse, resting your forehead against the head of your horse.
“This dust storm ain’t gonna go away anytime soon.” Billy rubbed dust off his face, removing his mask. “We’ll be fine in here.”
You nodded weakly, combing your fingers through your horse’s dusty hair. “We shouldn’t have gone out— I-I promised my pa that I’d be back—”
“Hey, look at me.” He went over and took your fidgeting hand. “They’ll be fine. We’ll be fine. When the storm eventually calms down, we'll head over to your place.” He slowly helped you off the horse and held your dirtied face in his hands, slipping your bandana off and wiping your muddy tears. “Okay?”
“Okay.” You took a breath, holding onto his wrists, following his breathing pattern. You rested your forehead on his, shutting your eyes. “Okay.”
Tumblr media
The dust storm only accumulated as time progressed. The field and crops were covered in piles of dust once more and the automobiles were suddenly buried underneath the dried dirt. Those who were inside any buildings had dust seeping through the smallest slivers, despite the taped downed windows and towels blocking the doors. It was as if the storm would never stop, deeply worrying the Ashford family for their daughter’s safety.
“James, you can’t leave!” Jo whispered toward her husband, arms crossed over her chest in disbelief. “It’s late and you wouldn’t be able to see anything with all of that dust blowin’. Adam worries for his sister, but imagine the grief if he lost his pa and his sister?”
“I can’t sleep without knowin’ if my little girl is fine, Jo,” James argued, tightly tying a handkerchief around his head. “If Adam wakes, don’t tell him where his pa went—”
“James!” She held his arm in desperation, holding eye contact. “The storm might end soon, don’t risk it.” She looked between his eyes as he glanced toward the backdoor. “Please.”
His gaze softened at his wife’s demeanor and pulled her into a hug. “I’ll wait.”
“Thank you.” She murmured, wrapping her arms around him. “When the storm dies down, you can go. I won’t stop you then… I worry about our little girl too.”
Tumblr media
The storm kept blowing until early morning. The crops were now either torn out of the ground or buried deep within dry dirt and families had given up on keeping the dust out of their homes. James and Josephina Ashford fell asleep at their kitchen table waiting for the storm to pipe down while you fell asleep in the stables in the security of your lover’s arms. William H. Bonney, on the other hand, stayed awake. He was constantly listening for the winds to quiet to let you know you could head home. In the early hours of the new day, Billy gently shook the woman beside him awake.
“Sweetheart, wake up.” He brushed the dust off that had fallen on you overnight, watching you shift closer to him. “Gorgeous.”
“Give me a minute, William.” You groaned, using his government name as a threat.
He chuckled and sat up straight, bringing you along with him. “The storm stopped, you can go home now.”
Your eyes shot open and you looked over at the male incredulously. “You should’ve said that first, idiot. Let’s go.”
Billy smiled as he stood, helping you up. He shook the final bits of dust off as best as he could and moved the hay bales away from the doors. Billy tilted his head toward you, silently signaling you to head home. You grinned and picked up your dress, racing over to the house without stumbling. You burst into the house and discarded the dust entering as well, finding your parents standing by the kitchen’s backdoor. James had his handkerchief tied across his face, triggering your tears.
“Y/N.” Her father let out a breath of relief and engulfed you in a tight hug. “You’re safe. You’re okay.”
“I’m sorry.” You sobbed into your father’s shirt, clinging onto him. “I’m so sorry, pa.”
“Why are you crying, sweet girl?” He rubbed your face. “What’s wrong?”
“I didn’t go straight home. I wanted to be out more, so I-I rode on the horses with Billy an-and then the storm started up. I shouldn’t have gone. I should’ve gone home right away. I should’ve stayed home. I shouldn’t have—”
“Hey, you’re alright.” James sat you down in one of the wooden chairs, removing his handkerchief from his face. “You’re safe. You’re home.”
You sniffled, looking up at your mother who had tears in her eyes too. “I’m sorry, mama. I didn’t wanna worry you…”
“My baby,” She knelt on the ground, taking your hands in her own. “I’m just glad you’re safe. The worst didn’t happen. You’re here. You aren’t hurt.”
Billy knocked on the side of the wall, making his presence known. In return, all heads whipped over to him. “I brought the groceries your daughter bought the other day.”
“William, come over here.” Your father beckoned him over.
“Yes, sir?” Billy stood by your side, removing his hat.
James sighed, putting his hand out. “Thank you for watching over my daughter.”
“Anytime.” Billy shook his hand, bringing him in for a hug. “I would risk my life for your daughter every single time.”
You lightly sock his arm at the mention, lacing your hands together. “Thank you.”
“I mean, now that you’re here, why don’t you help clear the dust out of our house? I’m sure my daughter has brought in heaps of it from runnin’ in here.” Jo patted her future son-in-law’s shoulder.
You flushed red as Billy chuckled, feeling him squeeze your hand at the comment. “Of course, Mrs. Ashford.”
The young couple got to work clearing out the dust while Jo and James started preparing breakfast for the day. It would be a while until all the dust would clear out of the house completely, but it wasn’t the worst problem they had. The dust storm that day might have ended, but little did the Ashford family know that it would only be the true beginning of their hardships.

fair and just ~ william bonney
Tumblr media
summary: billy’s been arrested and it’s bringing up some questions about your father and what his true line of work is.
warnings: physical abuse (please don't read if this subject triggers you), fluff, language, not proofread
word count: 5.6k
You hadn't known Billy long, but long enough to know that he wouldn't hurt a fly. Sitting in the back of the room, you watched as your father was ready to sentence him. He got caught, granted, but he never actually did anything. His shoulders were slumped over and he faced the ground, knowing what was coming. You wanted to stand up and yell at your father, but you kept quiet, huddled in the back of the room and wearing stolen clothes from your father’s old closet and a hat tilted over your face so no one knew you were there. Women weren’t allowed in the courtroom, but you weren’t recognizable.
“We find the defendant, William Antrim, guilty of attempted burglary and theft at the said Chinese premises and sentenced hereby to a total of three years in jail.”
You heard a sharp inhale to the left of you, recognizing him as the journalist who came up to visit the town a few weeks ago. Only from what you had heard, you knew that he was here investigating the rings that ran around here. Not that you knew much about them. Just that they were the power around here.
“Young as he is, we hope the defendant will use his time in confinement to reflect on his crime, and when he emerges back into society to commit himself to more lawful and productive lawsuits.”
The gavel rang through the hollow room, leaving everybody in silence. You saw something change in Billy’s body language, making him seem like he had no idea what had just been happening. “Remove the prisoner.”
Something seemed to click in his mind when Billy began to argue with your father’s decision.
“Wait! Don’t I get to say anything? This sentence is plain unfair.” Billy asked.
You agreed. While you knew your father wasn’t a completely lawful person, he never dismissed the fact that everyone was given the right to a fair trial. With no idea what was exactly happening, you kept quiet and still in the back.
“I didn’t steal anything. I didn’t hurt anyone,” he rebuked again, raising his voice.
Your father harshly put the gavel down again. “I said, remove the prisoner!”
You were ready to push towards the front of the small room and demand that he give Billy a chance to speak. But you couldn’t move. If your father found out that you were here, you’d be a dead woman. He had made it perfectly clear that you shouldn’t insert yourself into his work. You were all he had left, your mother passing in childbirth along with your younger brother ten years ago.
As the room began to fill with chatter, two men moved over to Billy harshly grabbing his arms and pulling him towards the cell in the other part of the building. He was coming your way but you knew you couldn’t reach out to him. You would risk your father spotting you, or worse, the two men wrestling you away from Billy. Instead, you tipped your hat up  slightly, enough so that anyone looking directly at you could see your eyes. Puckering, your lips you whistled a short tune, quiet but loud enough for him to recognize as the song his mother sang to him over and over again as a child. His head glanced up around the room, searching for the source of the tune. When his eyes met yours, his gaze lingered even as the men pulled him out of sight. Realizing that your face had been out in the open a little too long, you quickly dropped your hat back down and glanced around the room. No one had seemed to notice this few second interaction, except for one. The journalist. He stayed looking at you with concern in his eyes, but when you averted your gaze, he did too. The room was still for a moment, but out of the corner of your eye, you saw the journalist next to you calmly walk towards the front of the room.
“This is a travesty,” you heard him mutter quietly to your father, leaning towards him. “To make a kid pay for the things I’ve done?” What things? Did he get Billy wrapped up into whatever this is? “Shame on you, Judge.”  Pushing himself off of your father’s stand, he moved towards the front doors. You couldn’t take your eyes off of him as he walked out, burning your gaze into the side of his head. He was almost out of your sight when he glanced towards you and gestured for you to follow. Without another word, the writer left.
“Hands,” the jailer said, redirecting your attention to Billy. You watched his hands pop out from the cell bars and the jailer removed the cuffs from his wrists. You couldn’t see his face, but from the way he retracted his hands from the reach of anyone, you knew he was livid. You thought back to the journalist. Mr. Upson, was it? Against your better judgment, you made your way towards the door, careful not to alert anyone else of your presence. When you embraced the outside and Upson was nowhere to be found, you caught yourself wondering if he really meant for you to follow him.
“Ms. Wilson.”
Turning around, you saw Upson leaning against a wooden support, a cigar to his mouth.
Clearing your throat, you opened your mouth to say something, but was quickly interrupted. “I believe we should talk. How ‘bout a walk home? Wouldn’t want your father findin’ out you’re out here.”
You made no reaction, yet he still walked on, leaving towards your home. With your mind moving faster than your feet, you watched him walk a block before you actually began to move. Kicking up the dust from the oversized boots on your feet, you finally were shoulder to shoulder with the journalist, looking up at him for answers.
“Why do you think Billy’s bein’ punished for something you did?” you ask.
He inhaled, taking a moment to come up with an answer.
“How much do you know about your father’s work?”
“Not much. I know he’s this town’s only judge. He’s got this other thing that he won’t tell me what it is, but he says it's for improvin’ our lives. Everyone’s lives out here.”
He laughed slightly at your innocence on the subject. “Sure, sure.”
“What? Did I say somethin’ wrong?”
“No, no,” he reassured. “Just…how much do you know about the Santa Fe Rings?”
The Rings? Not much. You knew that they were a power group out here in the West, but not much else seemed to be known about the members. From what you had heard, they tended to be on the richer side of folks out here. “Not a lot. Just what people like to say out here. What does that have to do with my father?”
“Did you know he was part of them?”
Your father was a part of the Santa Fe Rings? That would explain this other job that he claimed to have, but it couldn’t be. Your family wasn’t by any means rich and your father maintained honest work. He never made poor judgment on a case, no matter how much better it would be for anyone. You refused to answer him, only asking another question.
“But what does that have to do with Billy?”
“The men your father works for have got an issue with me bein’ around here. Me knowing Billy hurts him. They all think he’s doing digging for me and my investigating.”
“He isn’t, is he? He never mentioned it.”
“No. I tried to get his help a while back, but he’s stubborn. Doesn’t want to wait to resolve things.”
You nodded in agreement. You knew how impatient Billy could be. He got upset just waiting for you to grab your things if you were going out. Part of you wondered if it was because he felt the need to look over his shoulder all the time. Ever since he was little, he always had his guard up, waiting for something or someone to sneak up and take everything away. The only time he seemed to let his guard down was when he was drunk or when he was with you, and even then, it didn’t last long.
“Is there any chance they’ll retry his case?”
Upson just shook his head in response. “The Rings have their fingers way too deep out here. They got eyes and ears everywhere. If Billy is getting in the way of things, even unintentionally, he’s not getting out until his sentence is served. By then, they’ll probably come up with something new to charge him for if he’s still a problem.”
“Not even if I talked to my father?” you asked, genuinely wondering. But your question was answered the moment Upson’s arm swung across your chest to stop you from walking.
“None of this conversation reaches your father. He must not know you were in that courtroom today. Being here, talking to me, is already putting you at risk. If your father finds out, or anyone from the Rings, finds out there is even a slim chance of you being in the way, they’ll arrest you or even kill you.”
“Then why talk to me? Why put me in danger?”
He scoffed, continuing to walk forward towards your home, now in sight. “I need your help.”
“How am I going to help? Especially after you just told me to stay out of it?”
“Stay out of the way, yes. Let everything happen as normal. All I need to know is if something is going to happen. Your father is deeper in this than he lets on. To anyone.”
You already didn’t believe he was involved. The man who taught you how to survive out here yet still hold onto your morals? The man who raised you to stand up for the right thing? While you knew it was a possibility, you forced yourself not to believe it.
“Forget it,” you said, making your way to your front door. “I don’t wanna lie to my father, much less rat him out.” You took a pause. “IF…if he is what you say he is, then I’ll think about it. But the father I grew up with has never done anything in cold-blood. He believes in the fair and just.”
Upson hummed in response. “Okay, Ms. Wilson.” He tipped his hat to you. “You’ll know where to find me.”
You watched as he turned around, making his way back down the street he had just walked with you. His words were stuck in your head. Was there the possibility of your father being corrupted in his line of work? Even if it was true, how many people had then been hanged to save your father’s skin? To save anyone’s? Pushing those thoughts to the back of your mind, you quickly hurried inside to take your father’s clothes off. They suddenly began to itch and it made you want to claw at your skin. The moment you were inside the doors, you forced the fabric off of your body. No. Upson couldn’t get in your head. Your father was fair and just. Fair and just. Picking the discarded clothes off the floor, you ran to your room and put on the dress you were wearing this morning. Upson might have been wrong about a few things, but the one thing he was dead on about was the fact that your father could never find out that you were there. You hung his things back where they were supposed to be, making sure they looked as neat and untouched as possible.
Taking a deep breath, you decided there were a few things that needed to be done before your father got home. You grabbed the bucket sitting next to the door and walked out to the well outside your house. There was an elderly woman already there trying to lift her pail over the edge, but the rope only seemed to be slipping from her hands. Picking up your skirt, you rushed over to help, grabbing the rope from her hands.
“Thank you, dear. You have a good heart.”
“It’s no problem at all,” you said to her smiling. “Do you need help taking it back home?”
“No thank you dear. I’ve got my small cart to help me,” she said, gesturing over to her wagon already loaded with cloths and food from the market. After you helped her get everything settled, you watched her walk up while you got your own water from the well.
You couldn’t help but let your mind wander to what Upson said about the Rings being everywhere. If they did, why would he risk talking to you out in the open? You didn’t want to believe anything he claimed to be true, but a part of you couldn’t help but look over your shoulder now. Despite the fact that you didn’t want to be involved, you knew that you already were. Whatever relationship you had with Billy was bound to be questioned and with the possibility of your father being a part of the Rings, you knew you weren’t safe. Once you had a full bucket, you made your way back into the house, placing the water over the fire to warm for your bath tonight then began to prepare food for dinner. Once your father got home, you would have to act like you had been here all afternoon. And you couldn’t bring up the case either, despite how much you wanted to avenge Billy.
You sat at the table, food all prepared, waiting for your father to walk in the door. You could barely move from your spot on the table, your muscles tense and hands shaking. Your tongue was raw from biting it all evening. You couldn’t make up your mind. A part of you knew better than to question your father, but you wanted to know what was truly happening with Billy. But were you then really about to question your father? He wouldn’t hurt you, would he? He loved you, but that didn’t stop him from harming you for questioning his authority. Your breath halted when you heard the front door open. He’s home.
“Mmm, smells good. Y/N?”
“Yeah, Pa. I’m in here.” When his figure walked in, the small light in the kitchen illuminated the shadow of his body so that it towered over you. Your father wasn’t a sprightful man, but where he lost in that he made up for in sheer strength. You wondered if he would have been able to take down Upson or Billy if either one of them had initiated violence in the courtroom earlier today.
“How was your day, Pa?” you asked, standing up from your chair to begin making a plate for him.
“Tiring,” he groaned, placing his coat on the back of his chair and sitting down in the seat adjacent to you. “Had a tough case today.”
“Yeah?” you tried to seem oblivious. “Heard it was a kid.” “Where’d you hear that?” your father said awfully quickly.
Shit. You had no reason to be in town today. If you said something wrong, you know your father would be mad. “Mabel stopped by today. Giving me one of my books back. She’d been in town with her mother today.”
Your father said nothing, only humming at your answer. You placed his plate down in front of him and began to make yours. “It was a kid. Matter of fact, you know him. William Antrim. Was arrested for burglary last night. Such a shame for such a young boy” You tried not to react, no matter how much you wanted to argue. He knew that it was attempted theft. Why would he lie to you? Did he know you were lying?
“You mean Billy? Yeah, I know him. Helped out his mother in the restaurant last summer. He seemed like a nice boy,” you finished, setting your plate down and taking a seat next to your father.
“I don’t want you hangin’ around boys like that. Anyone committing crimes and diggin’ where their noses don’t belong are just asking for trouble. Trouble I don’t want my daughter caught up in.” He rested his hand on top of yours, meant for reassurance but only made you want to pull away. You knew your father was shady about his new Rings business, but maybe you didn’t know as much as you thought.
“Let’s say grace,” you suggested.
Without another word about Billy, your father agreed and began to pray. The both of you sat in silence for the rest of the meal, the only noises being the silverware on the glass plates and your father clearing his throat. The tension was thick and weighing over your heads. You hoped your father couldn't tell how angry you were with him not only for what happened to Billy but also for lying to you about it. When the food off your plate was finished, you stood up, placing your dishes on the prepping table. You'd wash them later when you could stand to be in the room with your father. You then walked over to the fire where you had been warming water for a bath. The pail had barely been lifted from the flames before your father spoke up.
“You know, I thought I recognized my old hat in the back of the courthouse today. Would you happen to know anything about that?” Fuck. You'd been caught. Did he know you were there for Billy or did he just assume you'd been there to see him? “I thought I told you not to involve yourself in my business.”
You took a deep breath. “I know, Pa. I know,” you said, turning to face your father. “I just wanted to go into town today and I figured I'd come see what things happen that you tell me stories about. But I knew-”
“When I told you to stay away from people like Antrim, I meant it. You were there for him today, weren't you, and don't you lie to me young lady.”
You couldn't get a word out before he spoke up again. “Despite what you may think, that ruling was fair and just and to know it.” His voice was beginning to raise and his body along with it. He stood from his chair and his fist pounded on the table along with his words. “Question my judgment again, Y/N, and you WILL regret it.”
Tears were threatening to spill over, but you cleared your throat and picked up the pail. “Yes, sir,” you managed to get out.
You didn't give your father another glance before heading to the washroom. You needed to wash the grime of your father's old clothes and the dust from the town off of your skin.
As you let the water cascade down your body, you couldn't help but think of Billy. It would be dark soon and he was stuck in a cell. From the way he looked at the trial today, he hasn't eaten much in the last few days. You knew that his mother had been sick before she died a week ago. She had contracted whatever his little brother had died from a month prior. He was all alone now. You knew he had hung out with the likes of Jesse every once and a while, but other than that, you were kind of all he had. The two of you weren't close friends by any means but he got along with you surprisingly better than him and Jesse. You were one of the first ones he went to when his family died. You understood what it was like to lose family. Although you still had your father, lately it had felt like you were the only person in your home. His business took him away from home far too often for your liking. You and Billy both filled that lonely hole in one another’s lives. You were pulled from your thoughts when you heard a knock on the door.
“Y/N, I know you're upset with me and what happened today, but you have to understand that I did what I had to.”
You scoffed, getting out of the water and grabbing your drying cloth. “I'm not talking to you, Pa.”
“You have no reason to be upset. Antrim was trouble as it was and it was only a matter of time before he snapped.”
“We're not talking about Billy. What's done is done, even if you're wrong,” you decided to argue. You were losing your temper. What happened was wrong and you know that is it was anyone else, there would have been a fair trial. But those in cohorts with Upson were doomed to Billy’s fate.
“I’m not wrong. The boy had what was coming to him. Better you learn that now so you don’t end up in the same predicament.”
“Don’t give me that shit, Pa. You know that you were only trying to save your own skin. You and them Ring fellows. All you were doin’ was keeping people from findin’ out the truth about you all.”
There was silence coming from the other side of the door. You wrapped yourself tighter in your drying cloth, worried that you had taken it too far. Everything that Upson had warned you about had just spilled out in anger for Billy. You made your way to the door, ready to push it open to see what happened when your father came storming in. You could almost see the steam coming out of his ears as he charged towards you. As far as you could, you backed up towards the wall, trying to keep yourself together in your father’s presence. As strong as he was, you could be stronger. No matter what your father did to you, you wouldn’t let it show.
“Now you listen to me, young lady,” he spit in your face, gripping you tightly by the chin. “What I do is none of your goddamn business. And if you wanna talk about what’s really happening in my work then you are just as good as that no good journalist you seem to want to defend. Bound for the noose,” he screamed. His fingers dug into your skin, burning their imprint in your skin. Your body was still as you didn’t allow yourself to move. He had never gotten this angry with you before, never walked in while you were indecent, and never laid a hand on you like this before. The person you thought you knew was completely gone. But maybe he was never there to start with. Against your will, you felt a small tear slip out of the corner of your eye, falling onto his hand.
“Do you understand me?” he seethed.
“Yes, sir.”
With one last search in your eyes to make sure you meant it, he dropped your face and turned around swiftly toward the door. You could almost feel your face bruising. When you reached your hands up to touch the marks, you realized just how much you had been shaking. You couldn’t live like this, scared of your father. Making quick work of gathering your things in the washroom, you blew out the lantern hanging and hurried across the hall to your room. The moon was shining nicely through your window, illuminating the space around you so you could see. Dumbstruck by what had happened, you didn’t bother drying yourself off or getting yourself dressed. All you could do was grab the small shotgun hiding inside your nightstand drawer and crawl under the covers. There was no need for your weapon before, but tonight you felt that you needed that extra layer of protection.
Tumblr media
There was a knock outside of your window. At first, you brushed it off as dust or a branch hitting the window, but when you heard it again, you peeked your eyes open. You couldn’t see it clearly, but there was what appeared to be a shadow outside your window. It could just be the tree’s shadow bouncing off of the moon’s light, but it moved in a way only a person could. Realizing that you were still naked, you grasped the gun in your hand slightly, cocking it so you were ready to shoot if you needed to. After you heard glass shatter, you squeezed your eyes shut, relying solely on your gut for where to aim. There were some grunts, but not loud enough for you to figure out who it was. You waited a few seconds before flipping the gun up from out of the sheets. The person matched your speed, taking his gun out of its holster and pointing it directly at your head. But even in the dark, you could see his face, making you lower the gun almost instantly.
“You gotta get quicker than that if you hope to defend yourself, doll.”
Billy.
Watching as he placed his gun back on his waist, you then pretty much threw the gun across the room, no regard for your father probably sleeping in the other room. Trying to keep as much of your bed sheets around your body, you climbed over to Billy who was at the foot of your bed. He wrapped his arms around your form as you threw yours around his neck, practically jumping at him. Thankfully he was strong enough to keep the two of you from falling backwards.
“The hell are you doin’ here? How’d you…”
“I got out,” he said, pulling away from you. He leaned his forehead on yours and looked in your eyes. “We gotta talk.”
“We do. Billy, the hell? Why would you come here? This is gonna be one of the first places they look when they find you missing.”
“I bought myself some time. I needed to come here and find you before…”
“Before what?” you asked.
He needed to tell you. He couldn’t without telling you first. “Before I go.”
Letting your arms fall from around his neck, you sat back on your knees on your bed in disbelief. “You’re leavin’?”
“Y/N,” he began, leaning down to put his hand on your cheek. “I gotta get outta here. Ma’s gone, Joseph’s gone, Jesse left me for dead. I…I gotta go,” he finished with his voice cracking.
“Billy…” you barely let out. You could see tears starting to pool in his eyes. You’d only ever seen him cry twice before and it was when he lost his brother and mother. You mimicked his movements, caressing his face before taking his hat off and letting his brown curls fall loose. Letting your thumbs brush over his cheeks, you felt his now free falling tears on your skin. He was losing a lot by deciding to leave tonight. He was losing his friends, losing his family, losing his home. You couldn’t let him lose everything. “Let me come with you.”
His face flashed with confusion. Why would you want to leave all that you had? For him? It was then he noticed the purple blemishes on the bottom of your face that weren’t there this morning in the courthouse. “Who did this?”
It didn’t register right away what he was talking about, but when his fingers started to brush over your chin, the pain helped you figure it out. “It doesn’t matter.”
“YES IT DOES!” he raised his voice as loud as he could with your father next door. “It does, Y/N. I’m gonna kill ‘em.”
“Billy! All that matters is that I wanna get outta here. I can’t let you go off alone. I can’t let you lose everything.”
He felt that his heart would shatter any second. The only other person that cared for him like this was his mother. You would never know how special you were to him. Billy’s mind raced over the consequences, the negative possibilities of bringing you with him. As much as he would love for you to go, he’d rather you be safe. But were you safe here? Whoever did this to you certainly wasn’t someone you could be around.
“Okay.”
Your eyes widened. “Really?”
“Yeah, come with me.”
Reaching up, you leaned in, initiating a kiss. It started out slow and relaxed, before he registered what was happening. Billy deepened the kiss by brushing his tongue along your bottom lip, allowing yourself to open up to him. Your hands snaked around his neck in an attempt to bring him closer to you. His fingers hooked themselves under your chin, both of you melting together. There was a  feeling in your stomach resembling what could only be described as butterflies and all you could do was let out a small whimper as he pulled away from the kiss. Just enough that they didn’t still stick to yours. “Y/N,” you heard him slightly whisper.
“Go, find us a horse. I’ll be ready shortly.”
He didn’t say anything, only smiled at you before grabbing his hat and heading out the way he came in. As quietly as you could , you stood from your bed and began to dress in the clothes you had on earlier today. You grabbed your small bag under your bed and began stuffing it with things you knew you’d need or want to keep. Some extra pairs of clothes, a blanket, extra bullets, a locket that your mother gave you when you were younger, and your guitar. You knew it wouldn’t fit in the bag, but you never left anywhere for long without it. As soon as you were ready, you grabbed the gun off of your bed and stuck it in your boot. One last thing, you told yourself. Setting everything down next to the window, you made your way out towards your father’s bedroom. You knew exactly where to find it, having placed it there this evening. Your father’s old hat. As much as you loathed him right now, you needed something to remember him by. Having hurt you or not, he was still your father, still the man who cared enough to keep you and raise you all these years. You watched his sleeping frame, body sprawled all over your mother’s nice sheets and an empty beer bottle in one hand falling over the edge of the bed. You won’t cry, you told yourself as you let your hand come up to brush the marks your father left. You were ready to be on your own. You NEEDED to be on your own…well, with Billy. Ready to leave the room, you spotted some stationary on your father’s desk. You thought for a moment before deciding it was best to write a letter. Scribbling as fast, but as neat as you could, you folded the completed letter and stuck it next to the gun inside your boot.
Making quick work to get out of your father’s room and back into yours, you noticed Billy already waiting at the window for you to hand your stuff out to him. You gave him your guitar and slung the bag across your body.
“Got the horse?”
“Are you sure about this?” he asked, avoiding answering your question and moving his hand up to glide his fingers on your bruises.
A quick peck on the lips was answer enough for him, but you figured you reassure him with words, muttering a small yes. Setting your guitar case down in the gravel, he helped you out the window, careful to guard your body from the glass shards still sticking out of the wood. You jumped down from the sill and into his arms before he gently set you on the ground. He walked over to the clearly stolen horse and began to strap your instrument to the animal, easier said than done. You were ready to tell him to forget it before he told you it was stuck and wasn’t going to fall off. He knew how much you liked to play, how much you liked to sing. He couldn’t let YOU leave this part of yourself behind. Getting on the horse, he made sure that he was settled and everything was in order before sticking his hand out to you. He pulled you up onto the horse, seated nicely behind him with your arms already around his waist.
“Before we leave, I need to make a quick stop.”
“Sure, he said, before urging the steed forward. He made his way through town, careful not to disrupt anyone or anything and avoiding the jail. How know one seemed to know he was missing yet blew your mind, but the only thing you were concerned about right now were delivering this note and getting the hell out of this town. You made sure you were on the side of the building, double-checking that this was, in fact, the room, before grabbing the piece of paper in your boot and sliding it under the window sill, far enough for the person to grab it. As soon as you knew it was secured, you told Billy you were ready. Spurring the horse on, you and Billy began to move faster than before, nearing the edge of town. The sky was near pitch black. The moon had by now disappeared behind the clouds and the stars were the only thing guiding your way. You let yourself fall into his back, letting yourself close your eyes as you both rode off into the night.

You start walking along the road. Hearing the steps of horse hooves on the ground. You turn, seeing a gentlemen riding along. A cart being pulled behind. You wave your arm out, causing him to slow down. "You ok miss?" you smile at the older gentlemen.
"I was wondering where you were driving to?"you reach itno a small purse on your waist, pulling out a couple of notes as he talks
"Just a small town a few miles away for work" You hold them out to him.
"Could you drive me there please?". He looks at the small wad of cash, at the gun around your waist, then at your face. Nodingg he scoots over on his cart. You smile, hitching your skirt up slightly as you get onto it.
Making small talk with the man as he drives you both there. You hop down from the cart as you arrive, waving at him before walking around the town. Hands clasped neatly behind your back as you wonder around.
You see a few kids playing. Men outside a bar drinking. Some more men smoking. Woman emptying a bucket of dirty water. Another woman walking with a load of laundry. You watch as a couple of men start to follow the woman with the laundry. You tilt your head slightly. Walking after them slowly, trying to make it obvious you werent following but wanting to be quick enough to prevent anything from happening.
WHen you get down the end you see the men have surrounded her. There were three men in total, one seemed to be the leader. Going over to her and going to stroke her cheek. You watch as she moves away from his touch. His deminear changing to a more aggressive one at the rejection. You speak loudly as you walk confidently.
"There you are!" you go overe to the woman. Linking an arm with hers "I was wondering where you had got to" the men back away slightly, eyeing you up to. You look at them, resting a hand near your waist. Not threatening them but making their eyes aware of the gun hanging from your belt. "Sorry to interfere gentlemen but I need to steal my dear friend from you" you smile at them, walking with the woman. Quickly.
Going out into the public space with her. SHe puts the washing down onto an outside table. "Thank you" she speaks softly
"Will you be ok now?" you ask. She wipes her forehead with the back of her hand. Nodding slightly as you nod and smile, going to walk off again. SHe grabs your wrist, dropping it quickly as you turn to face her again
"Whats youre name?"
"Hope" she nods. Smiling softly at you as she brings her hand up, resting it on her chest lightly before putting her hand back down
"Kathleen". You nod and smile, titling your head slightly
"Its been a pleasure meeting you Kathleen" you go to walk again but she taes a step towards you
"Ive not seen you around here before? Ive been here a while so I recognise the locals"
"I arrived not to long ago. I wont be staying long though, just passing through" she nods
"How long are you staying for?"
"About a week" she nods. Thinking for a moment.
"Why dont you stay with me and my family for the week?"
"Oh no I dont want to interfeir with your life"
"I insist. Goodness knows what wouldve happened if you werent back there. You saved me. Its the least I could do for you".
"So long as you're sure?" she nods and smiles softly at you
"We've got a spare bed. Its not the comfiest but its probably better then the beds the inns round here have" you chuckle slightly and nod
"Thank you ma'am" she smiles at you as you motion at the laundry "let me help you with that" you grab it from where she had popped it. She goes to protest but you shake your head. SHe sighs, looking at you before leading you to where it needs to go.
"I'll be finishing work within the hour if youd like to hang around until then? I could take you back to mine afterwards" you nod. Smiling at her as you go and order a drink from the bar beore sitting at a table.
The hour passes quickly. She walks with you back to her house. It was small but well kept. You look around as she goes over to the kitchen. STarting to prepare some food.
"Who do you live with?"
“My husband and two sons. They should be home soon" you nod. As if on cue the door opens. "Speaking off. These are my sons" you turn, seeing two youn boys walk in. The taller of the two takes off his hat and places it onto the table. He meets your eyes. You smile at him as he glances at the gun still around your waist.
"This is my eldest son Billy and then my youngest Joe". You put your hand out towards the older, a smile still on yur face
"My names Hope" he takes your hand, gently shaking it before dropping it. You could not read the look he was giving you.
"Shes new in town. Arrived this morning. i said that she can stay the week with us". He nods, eyes ramining on yours as he motions his head at your weapon
"Thats a nice gun"
"Thank you. It was a gift from my sister in law". The door opens once again, an older gentlemen walks through the door.
"This is my husband Henry" he shuts the door behind him. His eyes scanning over your body. In a very different way to which the son did. "Henry this is our visitor Hope. Shes our guest for the next week" His eyes coming back up to meet yours as Kathleen continues to speak "Dinner will be soon. Billy darling, could you grab out some plates" he nods. You walk over towards him
"Let me help". He grabs out some plates, handing them to you. You go over and start helping dish out the food onto the individual plates. You then sit around the table, Mr and Mrs Antrim sitting either end. The brothers sat next to each other as you sit oppoite Billy. Kathleen says grace before you all start to eat.
They ask you a few questions. Where have you travlled from? Have you travelled alone? Where are yu heading to? You answer their questions as truthfully as you can. Not wanting to tell them the full truth of why you had to run away from your family.
As the meal finishes and after the plates have been cleared and cleaned Kathleen shows you to your bed for the next few days. You sit onto it. Soon sleep catching up with you from the hectic few days - hell even weeks that youve had.
You wake up in the morning. Getting up and going outside. Resting against the outside of the house as you watch the street. Hearing the door open you turn, seeing Billy walk out. He half smiles at you which you return. Looking back at the people. He walks over to you
"What are you planning on doing toay then Miss?"
"Theres no need for the formalities. Please call me Hope" you smile at him as he leans against the wall next to you "I dont know. I dont really have any plans today. Just wonder around town I guess" he nods. You go to ask him what he was planning just as a blonde haired man appears riding a horse. He smiles at Billy before dismounting. His eyes meeting yours as a soft smiles comes over his face
"Whos your friend?"
"Hope" you answer "and you are?"
"Jesse" he smiles at you before turning his head back to Billy "you still up for some shooting Kid?" he nods, standing up straight you look between the two men
"WHat are you boys shooting?"
"We go down by the field and practice shooting" you nod, standing up straight as Billy goes to untether his horse
"You two have fun" you smile at them as they both mount their horses.
"You have fun to miss" Jesse says at you, snaking his tongue over his lips before riding off. Billy tilting his hat at you before following his friend.
You stay and help at Mrs Antrims home. Helping to do some of the chores around the house whilst herself and her husband are away at work. You end up helping out one of the maids, helping her do the washing or hanging up the clothes. You're in the kitchen, you're cleaning the dishes as shes drying and putting them away.
You hear the fron door open. Looking you see the older son walk in. Smiling at Billy before going to carry on. The woman speaks next to you in Spanish. Not unsual due to her ethnicity. What did surprise you though was when Billy spoke back to her in Spanish. You look at them both, a look of consufion on yoru face. She lets out a soft scoff as Billy smiles at her. Speaking some more in Spanish
"What are you talking about?" you half smile, confusion still in your eyes as you look at the girl. She chuckles, almost a giggle as she grabs the dry plates. Going over and placing them onto the shelf. Turning to Billy he smiles at you.
"She was asking as to why you were staying with us. So I was informing her" you nod
"What did you say?"
"That I dont know why you're in town but you'll be staying with us over the next few days" you nod again. Putting your hand in the sink as you take out the plug. Finsihgint eh dishes as the girl comes over and carries on drying.
"Are you going shooting again tomorrow?" he nods. Placing his hands on his gun belt as you trun to face him, tilting your head slightly as you meet his eyes.
"Yeah. I try and practice everyday"
"Would you be able to take me out to practie?" he chuckles slightly
"Why do you need to shoot?"
"Its a dangerous world we live in. A girl can never be to careful" he nods, smiling as he looks down.
"Yeah I can teach you to shoot" he looks back up at you "you've got your own weapon right?" you nod. "Good" he smiles. His eyes soft as they watch yours "I'm going to go and help ma. Ill see you soon" you nod, watching as he alks off.
You continue helping the girl arond the house. Then helping Kathleen make dinner when she gets back before heading to bed. You wake up early in the morning. Getting up you grab a ribbon. Tying up half of your hair . Two strandes falling either side, framing your face as the rest fall down your back, over your shoulders.
Going into the kitcehn you smile at Kathleen. Who is rushing to get out the house. Late for her shift. You wave goodbye to her as she rushes out the door. Billy comes in, smiling at you. "Good morning" you smile at him "Still up for shooting today?"
"Of course" you answer him. He relaxes his smile as he looks at you. "Will your friend be joining us?" he shakes his head.
"No. No Jesse has other things to do today" he holds your gaze as you nod. Pushing your lips tgether slightly "shall we go then, miss?" you chuckle slightly.
"I told you. Call me Hope" you smile, walking past him as you go to the front door. He follows you, going over to his horse. "How far is it to walk?"
"Do you not have a horse?" you shake your head. He nods slightly. Untethering and then mounting his horse. He holds the reins taught as he hods a hand out towards you. "You can ride with me". You take his hand, letting him help pull you up as you sit behind him. You rest your arms around him, resting over his stomach as he starts his horse in a soft trot.
You get to an empty field. A few fallen trees in the middle of it. He dismounts his horse, holding his hand out towards you as he helps you jump down. Going and tying his horse to a tree. “Lets see the gun you have” he stands about a metre in front of you. You take it out the gun holster, handing it to him. He looks at it, his eyes filling with a gleam as he examines the weapon. “This is a very nice gun” he spins it a couple of times in his hand, taking aim at the tree line. Getting the feel for the weapon. He nods in approval as he hands it back to you. Talking as he sets up the makeshift shooting rink.
"I assume you've shot before?". You shake your head as he looks at you in disbelief "you have one of the nicest guns ive seen yet you've never used it?"
"I dont know what else to tell you" he chuckles, walking back up to you as he motions at the various bottles and cans on the fallen trunk.
"Lets see what we're working with then". You take out your gun. Aiming it. You fire. Missing the targets completely. SOmehow managing to get a tree a ways back. You lower the gun.
"If I say that I was aiming for the tree then does it count?" you look at him. He lets out a soft laugh as he shakes his head. You take in a breath, aiming again. Squeezing the trigger. Once again hitting none of the targets. You throw your head back and let out a sigh of defeat. Causing him to laugh. "I give up. Its impossible" his lips turn slightly.
"Yeah?" you nod. He faces the items. Taking his gun out and taking aim. Shooting six times. Hitting five of the targets. Your mouth drops in awe as you watch. Turning your head to face him, he smirks as he looks at you. Putting his gun back in its holster.
"How the fuck did you do that?"
"Ive been practicing a long time" you scoff slightly
"No kidding" he smiles as a soft chuckle passes his lips
"Come on. Put your gun up". You do. Your body facing towards the items as he comes up behind you. Gently resting his hand over yours as you fee his breath on the shell of your ear. "Look at where your shooting. Take in a breath and aim. Exhale and pull the trigger". You do as he says. Drawing in a long breath, holding it as you aim at the item. Exhaling before pulling the trigger. It doesnt hit the items but itdoes hit the log the items are on.
"Good. Relax some more and aim a bit higher. Then repeat what you did". You take in a breath. Aiming, exhaling, then shooting. Hitting a glass you watch as it shatters. A smile comes over your face as he moves away from you. You turn to face him, grinning at him "Well done" he smiles. "Do you think you can hit the rest of the targets?"
"Just be impressed that I managed to hit one, ok?" he laughs. Watching you as you bring the gun up. Repeating the same four steps as to which he told you to do. Managing to hit two more tagrets. You bite your bottom lip as you try to hold back your glee. Turning to face him you meet his eyes.
"You're improving. Not that you could've gotten worse" you playfully push his shoulder
"SHut up" he chuckles. You reload your ammo before bringing the gun back up. This time managing to hit 4 out of 6. The both of you practice for about an hour. Taking it in turns to shoot. Once youve finished you put your gun away. He helps you get back up onto the horse. Holding onto him as he rides back home.
He jumps off. His hand coming out for you as he dismount. You gently stroke its neck as he ties the horse up "Same time again tomorrow?". He asks. Eyes looking at you as he rubs the horses nose. You nod.
"I look forward to it" you say. Going inside their home.

Yall the angst decided to hit me at 12am LMAO, but here's a lil spoiler for Partners in Crime (kinda a draft cause idk which girl is which and when, etc)
Tw: whoring, screaming, mental breakdown of the 1800s, abuse of consent.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Do you honestly think you know what's good for him!?" Violet shouted, her blade in hand as she faced Dulcinea. She had been busy chopping off bits of her hair in the middle of a breakdown because of what she had been doing to keep herself distracted. She couldn't do big chunks of her hair, no no no. They didn't like that. They liked long luscious hair.
"Why, yes, in fact, Ms. Evans, I do," She had calmly replied, glancing down at the chops of what used to be Violet's dead ends.
"WELL YOU FUCKING DONT. YOU DONT KNOW SHIT ABOUT BILLY; HAS HE TOLD YOU ANYTHING ABOUT HIS HOME LIFE? ABOUT HIS MA? WHY HE TURNED TO THE OUTLAW LIFE IN THE FIRST PLACE?!" She screamed, feeling the hot tears roll down her cheeks. She couldn't take it anymore. The multiple women, the insistence from Billy that a certain woman was "the" one. Violet had enough. She was tired of it; she wanted Billy for herself and was the only one who could see that he was hurting or trying to distract himself when something was on his mind.
"I HAVE TRIED, TRIED, AND TRIED TO BE OKAY AROUND YOU- BE DECENT, LIKE JESSE ASKED. BE RESPECTFUL, BUT YOU DONT DO THE SAME TO BILLY. YOU DONT RESPECT HIM, YOU JUST THINK HES HOT. HES A PERSON TOO, HES GOT A GOOD HEART, WONDERFUL INTENTIONS, AND MORE PASSION THAN ANY OF THE MEN IVE BEEN LETTING USE MY BODY."
"You been what...?" Came a familiar voice and both women looked. Billy.
Violet felt fear well up in her throast. He wasnt supposed to know.
She immediately shut the bathroom door in his and Dulcinea's faces, and locked it shut. She heard muffled arguing between Dulcinea and Billy yet all she could do was cry. She slid down to the floor, leaning against the door and sobbed her heart out to herself. Billy knew now what she was doing to help them get by while being outlaws. That wasn't the plan-Billy was never supposed to find out.
She had been whoring her body for older men to fuck. To abuse until they couldn't finish anymore. All to keep food coming.
Violet's tears eventually came to a stop and so did Billy's and Dulcinea's arguing. It was silent for a while before Billy's voice came back, raw from yelling, only to speak softly to Violet.
"Vi...? Whenever you're ready, I'd like for us to talk.. about everythin', okay? No more secrets between us," He offered, only to receive two gentle raps on the door in response. He knew what that mean; they had established a system where one or two knocks meant some form of yes or no, depending on the situation. Violet meant 'Okay.'
"Do you want me to stay here and wait for you?" One rap of her knuckles against the hard wood. 'No.'
"Okay... I'll be outside. And don't worry, Dulcinea's gone and she wont be comin' back." 'Thank you, Billy.'

you know those posts where cap’s seen as a dad figure? what if one of the reasons why the other superheroes think that way is because when league members bring up there kids or need cap to cover for them when their kids need them cap is just super understanding, empathetic and gets oddly proud of them for being with there for their kids
the actual reason why he’s like that is because billy just really values those things as an orphan and is proud to work with such great people
Whenever someone mentions or even breathes the implication of Cap being mistaken as a dad or seen as a father figure, I lose my marbles, because, oh cheese and crackers, I just can't express enough how much I adore this headcanon! I'm doin' a little happy dance :D
Billy Batson is someone who has always yearned and wished to be a part of a family again since his experience was cut short due to tragedy and made sour thanks to his uncle Ebeneezer being crusty dusty, so it's easy to see him respecting those who appreciate the family they have. He had to grow up and mature far faster than any kid his age, and compared to most adults, Billy is actually more mature and responsible than they are, unfortunately. It's reasonable to see that this would be reflected in Captain Marvel; someone who's immature at times, but ultimately a good-natured person with a golden heart and good intentions, who others can depend on anytime and anywhere (much to the sacrifice of his personal life).
Billy has been in enough foster homes at a young age to know the difference between a good parent and a rotten one, so seeing members of the league prioritize their family members and kids would make him really happy. He's the type to take on any shift or mission in the place of another member if they had something important to do with their family. What you said about him being very proud and empathetic towards parents in the league made me realize that Billy would have loved to have parents like them had his own not perished. In a way, he's not just proud of them, but a little bit envious.
This also brings up another headcanon of mine, where Captain Marvel is the unofficial designated babysitter of the league when emergencies come up. Because despite not knowing who he is/his secret identity, people trust him enough to let him know theirs. Like, it all starts with the Captain in the watchtower break room drinking apple juice, and is suddenly bombarded with a group of children or sidekicks being thrown at him by the other heroes, saying that the Captain was in charge while they were away before teleporting away.
All these kids and teenagers that he suddenly has to help look after, and while Captain Marvel is calm on the outside, Billy Batson is freaking out on the inside. Some of those kids are older than he is, and there's some hilarity to it. Shenanigans ensue in the Captain Marvel: Adventures in Babysitting day, but it all turns out okay in the end. As a kid, Billy would know how to talk to them and keep them busy with fun/educational stuff. Might even teach them a thing or two about good morals, manners, archeology, or ancient magic stuff.
I imagine some of those kids would want to be babysat by him again, and Billy would welcome it (with warning ahead of time). Captain Marvel is just someone people like being around with his good dad vibes. Some of them even ask if he has kids of his own, but are met with an empty room immediately as the man zooms off whenever people ask him questions about family.
Gosh I went rambling again, but I loved this ask!

Don't Waste A Second
Summary: Billy the Kid x Fe!Reader -> You and Billy have been close for a while now, but what happens when your life is put in danger and he has to bargain for your life?
Disclaimer: MDNI: Criminal Minds level (16+ subjects mentioned although not all are carried out, just (kind of) talked about. ANGST, self-deprecation though Billy won't stand for it. Talks of death, blood, gore and gunfire. Fluff splattered around. Not proof read.
Tumblr media
First came the sound of gun fire.
Your heart leaped from your chest and you could feel every morsel of your being being pumped with adrenaline by the minute.
The head of the rival gang in town sat beside you until he heard the second gun shot before he himself stood and brought you with him.
“You’re my leverage for my life, woman. Say a word and I will kill you myself.”
It wasn't long until the owner of the gunshots appeared by the door.
“Well, if it isn’t the Kid himself?”
“Let her go.”
He pulled you higher to his head. Even with a shot like Billy’s, this could pose a danger if he wasn’t careful.
“Ah, I wouldn’t do that if I were you.”
“Let her go.”
“Didn’t your mother teach you any manners?”
“Didn’t your mother teach you not to kidnap women?” You spoke before you even thought.
“I thought I told you to shut up!”
“Hey!” Billy had the man’s attention once more. “You don’t talk to her. You talk to me. I’m the one you have a problem with.”
“Which makes it all the more fun having her here, right by my side.”
Billy raised his gun a little higher.
“Oh, I wouldn’t do that if I were you. One wrong move and the bullet goes straight through her skull.”
That made Billy falter a little.
“Now, I know better than anyone that you have a little soft spot for her, so how about we cut a deal?”
“It’s not worth it, Billy.”
“Shut up!”
“I’m not worth it, Billy. Don’t do it. No matter what he says.”
“I thought I told you to shut it!”
The man’s hands dragged roughly around your neck, forcing you to look at the rotting ceiling.
“Please, Billy. Don’t do it.”
“How much is she worth to you, Billy? Huh? Lookin at her, I’d only give a couple bucks but I have a feeling she means more to you than just a few crummy dollars. What do you say, Kid?”
Whilst the man was talking, you were able to move your hands just enough to remove the silver knife from his pocket. The one he had been spinning in his hands just moments before Billy’s gunshot rang through the house.
“You got it?”
The man thought he was talking to him, but then you replied.
“Yep.”
In less than 3 seconds, the man felt a sharp stab go into his thigh causing his grip to loosen allowing you a swift escape. However, not before you took the opportunity to drag the blade down his leg, opening the wound further allowing Billy a clear shot of the man’s head if he wanted to take it.
And he did.
Moments later, the body dropped in front of you and you scrambled back on all fours until you got to your knees and found Billy level with you in height.
He pushed your dirty hair from your face, and checked you over for any visible wounds. There was none yet, that he could see.
“Let’s go home.”
Hours later, you found yourself washed and dressed whilst Billy tended to some of your larger wounds.
When you had been getting washed, you hadn’t noticed Billy sneak a glance through the gap in the clothing divider. He saw the blood. He saw the brides. He saw the scars.
Then he heard your voice, trying to be quiet in its pain as you lowered yourself into the tub and tried to clean yourself off.
He had asked if you needed any help, but you were stubborn. He knew your answer before you even gave it.
But he gave you no choice afterwards. He would tend to your woods and that was final.
So, sitting beside him on the worn sofa whilst the fire crackled to keep you both warm. Billy pressed some ointment to the scars that littered the side of your body.
He had called for the town doctor to come and see you. Of course, he came right away and saw to you- at least, what you would show him. He gave you a small prescription for the pain and some cream that would help keep the wounds clean until they finally healed.
“Do you want to talk about it?”
“Not particularly.”
“Did they…did they do anything to you?”
“Billy. You are applying ointment to my scars and my body is covered in bruises. You’re seriously-“
“Did they touch you?”
You sighed, and moved a little to lift your shirt back up. “No. Not in that way. Though I doubt it would have been long before they did.”
A silence fell over you both once more, Billy breaking it a few minutes later.
“What did you mean before?”
“Before what?”
Billy sighed and replaced the lid on the tin of ointment. Resting his arms on his knees, he leaned forwards and pressed his hands together. You lowered your shirt and looked at him.
“Before, when he had you…he tried to make a bargain for your life. You said it wasn’t worth it. That you weren’t worth it. Why did you say that?”
“Because it’s true. Because I’m not.”
“But you are.”
Billy took your hand in his as he spoke to you.
“Billy,” you chuckled a little. “ I teach five days a week at the local school. I serve people drinks on the weekends. People come and go and I am still always asked about who I am. I am…me. I’m nobody important.”
“You’re important to me.”
You paused when Billy looked you in the eyes. His hands still held yours.
“You are everything to me, you hear? Everything. I haven’t been in the same spot since I was a kid. The reason and the only reason behind that is you. You are the reason I stayed. You are the reason I wake up in the morning and make sure everyone is safe in this town because even if just one of them isn’t, then that puts you in danger. I never wanted to see your life be put in danger because of me. You are everything to me, Miss Y/N Y/L/N. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
“Billy,”
“I mean it, Y/N. You have my whole life. You are my whole life.”
In that moment, a whole other silence took over and you found Billy moving  closer to you and found yourself doing the same to him.
He paused for a moment, your noses brushing. He questioned you with his eyes. He needed to know if he was about to be kissed back or punched.
Instead, he saw you nod slightly and he moved in, pressing a kiss to your lips before his hand came to the side of your face to draw you in closer.
Of course, you had been fond of Billy since the moment you met him. But you didn’t realise you loved him until just a few moments before you found yourself being towed away by a stranger, who had first told you he was one of the children’s uncles - a child who you taught at school and helped out with after class when he couldn’t just quite find the confidence to read out in class, causing his stutter to worsen.
Billy knew the moment he stepped foot on the school grounds something was wrong. Like it was in the air, or something.
He held a freshly picked bunch of wild flowers he’d found riding through the hills on his way to meet you. He did this every time, and everytime the pick would be different. He knew you didn’t like gifts - he had heard as much from the town’s local gossip woman when he stopped by her store to pick up some fresh dressings.
At the time, you had just walked past the store. All Billy had to do was turn around to see when the woman was staring at and found you, with your head buried against a pile of papers and a pencil in your hand, scribbling away as you managed to avoid almost everything that stood in your way.
“I heard she was engaged once to some fella outside of New York.”
“You hear right.” the woman told the people in the store. “Apparently he broke her heart and she came out here to teach our kids.”
“What did she do back in New York?”
“Governess from what I heard. But the kids grew up, that was just before her engagement.”
Billy would come to learn that the ‘fella’ you were engaged to did break your heart, but not due to his own failings. He had been on a city inspection job when, during his inspection of one of the machines, a water pipe that ran directly under the building exploded.
Even if the shrapnel hadn't cut through his skin and caused him to bleed out, the weight of the machine that he fell into probably would have crushed him. He died later on in the hospital, but not before dictating very slowly to one of the nurses what he wished he could say to you first.
You had been given the letter by the nurse shortly after she found you in the waiting room after you had seen his body.
“Did she ever find anybody else?”
“A couple tried. Hell, some rich railway fella practically tossed diamonds at her feet, but she didn’t want them. She smiled, kissed them on the cheek and made her way back through town. All she does is work and sleep.”
Over some more comments made through the gossip fueled conversation, Billy came to learn that you didn’t like grand gifts or gestures. But rather, subtlety. Subtlety and truth.
On the weekends when you served multiple drinks, he got to know you and before both of you knew it, he was showing up outside of school when you finished teaching and one day, whilst on a ride back into town, he brought with him a bunch of flowers, just because.
A few hours later when he rode past your house, he found them in a vase in your kitchen window.
So, after months of being friends with one another, and having a yearning for more, it came to your realisation that, even just the thought of Billy not turning up or not seeing him every day, knocked you sick.
There wasn’t a world where you didn’t want to be with him.
But, on your way out of the school gates, you were met with an ‘Uncle’.
Pulling back from the kiss, you kept your head against Billy’s. “Wait.”
“I’m sorry, we shouldn’t- I shouldn’t have-”
“No, Billy. It’s not that. I just…”
You pulled back but kept your eyes fixed on Billy, only tearing them away for a moment as you looked to his hand that you took in yours.
“I need to know that you’re being truthful with me and not just saying all of this because of what happened today. Because, if it’s true, then there are more than just your feelings in this. I just…I don’t want to be hurt, Billy.”
“Darlin’, look at me?”
You looked up and Billy cupped one of your cheeks in his hand. “Everything I have just told you…it’s all true. Even if today hadn't happened, I would have told you. I’ve been wanting to tell you for so long, but I was being a coward. I love you.”
The next moment felt like an eternity for Billy, until finally, he found the light at the end of the tunnel.
“I love you, too, Billy.”
He didn’t have to think about what to do next. Pulling you in, he kissed you like he had waited a thousand years just to see you one last time.
And neither of you were going to waste a second.

You made your way down the front stairs to your horse when the doors to the bar slammed open. Startled, you turned around to see Billy standing there, staring at you with an odd expression. You tried to pay no mind to him, focusing solely on untying your horse. You heard his boots trample down the stairs and move on the gravel behind you. He moved to place a hand on your shoulder, but surprisingly, you were quicker.
Pulling your gun out of its holster, you pointed the trigger right at his head.
“Hey, hey, HEY!” he yelled, jumping back. Billy had his one free hand up in surrender, while the other held his hat. “I meant no harm, just…” Your shaking hands lowered the gun, placing it back in its spot on your hip. “I just wanted to say good game, sir. You’re one of the best I’ve played with.” He held his hand out in front of him, meaning to shake it, but all you did was ignore it.
“You, too,” you said, teeth almost seething, as you mounted your horse. You looked back down at him and pulled the cloth down from over your mouth. “And it’s ma’am to you.” Without another word, you rode off down the street toward your cabin, leaving a dumbfounded Billy behind in the dust.

summary: it’s tom’s birthday so his girlfriend y/n wakes up early to surprise him with croissants
i woke up and quietly got out of bed making sure tom was still asleep. it was his birthday and i wanted to surprise him with his favorite thing ever (other than me obviously) croissants!
so i started pulling up his favorite recipe and got to work. this was my first time making them without tom there to help so i was a little nervous they wouldn’t turn out because let’s be honest tom is the chef is this relationship but i couldn’t not make him croissants on his birthday!
the timer went off and i pulled the croissants out of the oven and they smelled soooo good. i was setting plates on the table as i felt two arms snake around my waist and lips pressing a kiss into my neck.
“sweetheart did you wake up early to make me croissants?” tom asked as i turned around to face him.
“yeahhh…” i said blushing and then i stood on my tiptoes to give his lips a light peck. “the best boyfriend in the world deserves some homemade croissants on his birthday, that’s just a given.”
tom blushed, “that’s why i decide to keep you around. that and the bomb sex.”
“TOM! why do i decide to put up with your nonsense?” i said giving him a light punch in the arm.
“you know you love me” he said as i squealed from him tickling my sides. i tried to tickle him back but he picked me up and threw me over his shoulder before setting me on the couch and attacking me in kisses. he starts leaving love marks all over my neck and chest when the second timer i set goes off to ensure i didn’t burn the croissants.
“got a little carried away didn’t i” tom laughed and pulled me off the couch.
“we can’t be having any little tom’s running around just yet” i remarked.
“you know i don’t hate that idea actually. could that be my present this year?” tom said.
“just eat your croissants” i rolled my eyes and dragged him back to the kitchen.
author’s note: hope you enjoyed and don’t forget to vote on the series i want to write and leave suggestions for any tom blyth stories you want to read! ;)
