There is a particular Tumblr poll that has two options that are evenly matched: this is to say that any given voter has a 50–50 chance of voting for either of the two options in the poll.
A. In terms of n, where 2n represents the total number of votes cast in the poll, write an explicit sequence that gives the probability that both competitors get the exact same number (n) votes, thus tying.
B. Construct an infinite series that represents the sum of all the terms in the sequence you made for part A where n ≥ 1. Does this series converge or diverge? How do you know?

Cursed math fact of the day: if 1 out of 10 people has the property X, then given a sample of 10 people, the probability of exactly one of them having the property X is 10*(0.9^9)*0.1 = 0.9^9, which is about a 38.7% chance.
The probability of at least one of them having the property X is no less cursed at 1-(0.9^10), which is about 65.1%.
Thankfully, the expected number of people having the property X is in fact 1 if your sample has 10 people in it.

Voltron characters as algebraic expressions/distributions:
PIDGE: the binomial distribution
Tumblr media
Binomial distributions display probabilities for a set number of binary trials (only two choices) within an experiment. I feel like this represents her because of her experimental nature as well as the two choices she was faced with in s1: saving the universe or leaving to save matt and her dad.
LANCE: sine function
Tumblr media
IT'S ALL ABOUT THE WAVES!! Bro is smooth and bro swings both ways. Also, a sine wave is a periodic function, meaning it repeats the same pattern again and again. This can represent how while Lance is moving forward, he feels like is isn't growing or isn't more, but is rather stuck, bouncing between highs and lows.
KEITH: cosecant function
Tumblr media
cosecant functions are the reciprocals of sin function (csc=1/sin), so this shows how Keith "reflects" or mirrors Lance. Additionally, the periods of csc functions start at positive or negative infinity and then stray towards the origin, but never quite reach it. This represents how Keith is so far away, and how everytime he comes back he leaves again, and how "home" always feels out of reach for him (csc function approaches horizontal asymptote but never truly gets there)
ALLURA: exponential function
Tumblr media
The exponential function starts at an infintessimally small value that is nearly zero, and then rises drastically. The "flatter" values of the graph represent her comatose, and the sudden increase of values reflect her increased power, fight, and drive. It continues to increase forever, which I think can represent her death in canon. She transcends a barrier that the others cannot reach.
CORAN: uniform distribution
Tumblr media
MY BOY Coran is the most unwavering support ever. The key aspect of a uniform distribution is that it is always the same value wherever it exists. It doesn't change or shift, just like how Coran has always, ALWAYS been able to constantly be there for the team and the universe.
HUNK: step function
Tumblr media
While canon does him dirty, Hunk rises in both confidence and skill throughout the show. He's very methodic and is also a backbone to the team, which is why I gave him a function that's broken so evenly and is still rising. He is the type of character who climbs up. Also, I first used step functions in an engineering class!
SHIRO: hyperbolic function
Tumblr media
OMG YALL ALR KNOW!! Not all hyperbolic functions map this way fyi, but THESE particular ones are sooooo Shiro. There is two parts of the graph, one positive and one negative. They never touch but they mirror each other identically and they're mapped by the same function. This represents Kuron and Shiro. They're both made from the same DNA, appear identical, but they have different minds and goals (the same way both parts of this function approach different values as x approaches infinity!)

Doing the maths: Grian's failure at getting a mending book
lots of talk about maths and probabilities below the cut! but there's a graph and simple explanation at the end if you want to get the gist of it and are bad at maths.
(I am still young and learning maths, critique/advice always welcomed)
What are the odds of getting a mending book in Minecraft?
(I am assuming Grian has been doing all his fishing with Luck of the Sea 3)
The probability of a mending book is actually a bit annoying to estimate. The Minecraft Wiki lists fishing up an enchanted book as 1.9% chance. This is for ANY enchanted book. The Minecraft wiki talks about how the chance of an enchantment being selected is calculated. Mending has a weight of 2. Using the table, mending has a probability of 2/135.
However, Grian is looking for any book with mending, not just a pure mending book. Additional enchantments are calculated in a different way, involving RNG, which means it won't be as easy to model. Due to this reason, I'll just be using the odds for a pure mending book throughout.
TLDR: a mending book has a 0.028..% chance (2/135*0.019*100)
Grian's Data
According to this screenshot, Grian has used a fishing rod 5679 times. This number may not be fully accurate, as it includes the times he's fished other players, rather than just fished for items, but it is a good estimate.
To help visualise this data, with a median waiting time between catches of 17.5 seconds, Grian has spent over 20 hours fishing so far! He may have a problem.
Is this statistically significant?
Hypothesis testing (p-value approach):
H0: p = 19/67500 (the null hypothesis - he has no mending books because of chance)
H1: p < 19/67500 (the alternate hypothesis - he has no mending books due to different odds)
5679 trials, 0 mending books
X ~ B(5679, 19/67500) (binomial distribution, 5679 tries with a probability of a mending book being 19/67500, where X is the number of mending books)
p(X=0) (what is the probability the number of mending books being 0)
p = 0.2021473392
Now, the point at which data becomes significant is subjective. For instance, you *could* get a million heads in a row flipping a coin, it's not impossible, but at a certain point, you can begin to say "okay there's something not normal about this". For this approach, the closer the p-value is to 0, the more evidence there is against the null hypothesis . The p-value here is far above a significance level of 0.01, or 0.05, or 0.1. There isn't a clear line between significant/non-significant, but this is answer is quite a bit far from 0
With this, I cannot reject the null hypothesis.
Personal conclusion: this is not statistically significant, Grian is just unlucky.
Are other values statistically significant?
Gem's proposed 9000: results in a p-value of 0.079... more significant than Grian's number but I don't imagine Mojang would be too concerned. As said though, it's all subjective.
I am bad at maths, what does all this mean?
Here is a graph, showing what number of mending books you might have after 5679 tries. The height of the bar represents the probability of getting that amount. The numbers at the top are the (rounded) numbers I used in my calculation
Tumblr media
The pink column is 0 mending books - like what Grian has! As you can see, it is less likely than getting 1 or 2 books, but not too uncommon to happen.
End conclusion: Grian has bad luck. Like, not as hilariously bad as he thinks, but still bad. If he keeps going, chances are he will get a mending book, but I think he should probably stop fishing because at this point he has a problem.

for anyone curious the probability of avoiding the cursed arrows is 2/9 (there are 45 ways to randomly select 2 out of 10 arrows and 10 ways to randomly select 2 out of five arrows). also (if ive done my math correctly, i did it by hand lol) then if we roll 3d6 and one d4 and sum up the resulting numbers the number of combinations that lead to a sum of 16 or higher is 192: divide this by the 864 possible dice rolls we get a probability of 2/9 - precicely what we need. (unsurprising as the author of xkcd is a physicist who has worked for NASA i believe.) In other fun news, the probability tables for sums of diffrent polyhedral dice are annoying and i dont like them. (im certain there's some concise way to mathematically describe the probabilities that arise but i do not know it)
Tumblr media
Look, you can't complain about this after giving us so many scenarios involving N locked chests and M unlabeled keys.

my designs for the admin quintet :]
Tumblr media
design notes:
Shedletsky- I don't really have a design for him, and I am not drawin gthat fuckass shirt thing. Decided to make him around 5'5 ft tall.
Builderman- Heavily inspired by Sonya's design (on tiktok). He is so tired of everyone. I feel like people are forgetting that he's 4'9 ft tall canonically, he's short af man.
Dusekkar- Wise pumpkin deer boy :3 He is deer :3 Also made him 5'5 ft tall, just like Shedletsky.
Doombringer- Absolute fucking GIANT. Utter behemoth. Lowkey he reminds me of a puppy but idk. Wanted to give him some giant gloves and boots to match with his bucket-helmet cause I thought it looked nice. Also I gave him freckles for the sake of it. Also I made him around 7'8 ft tall.
Stickmasterluke/Luke- I wanted to give him, and I quote; "lumberboy swagger," I have no idea what it means but that's what he looks like. Gave him the same double-chest I give winged characters cause I really like that feature. Also though it's not shown, I decided to give him small faulty wings attached to his collarbone as a result of a wing mutation, so they're hidden under his shirt. I also made him around 6'5 ft tall.
Bonus:
Tumblr media
Forsakened Doombringer
I wanted to give him a sort of fallen angel sort of vibe but I probably failed at that. I also decided to give him wings to represent Luke, as I headcanon them to be really close friends. I gave him a dog muzzle attached to the bucket helmet as I largely see Doombringer as a sort of beastly man. Also furred cape for the sake of it.
Also the text next to him is an altered version of the secret message in Binomi by Maretu.

This Anton Seems... Fishy {Antonblast}
Inspired by a concept I saw on the Antonblast subreddit of a "Fake" Anton (a-la Fake Peppino) derived from a mutated Anton Fish (enemy encountered in Pinball Mire, a Crash Bandicoot reference), so I decided to take my own crack at it. Meet Doppelganton, the (heavily) mutated Anton Fish!
Info:
Probably the result of waste run-off from Smallbuster's experiments mixing with the dangerous mud of the Pinball Mire.
The binomial name, Homoides rhodops, should translate into "Human-likeness Rose-colored face" (as in, has a human-looking face that resembles a certain RRRRED GUY), but I'm not too familiar with how binominal nomenclature names work.
Now it's trying to learn how to human... Well, first it was trying to learn how to "Anton", but learned that it didn't really like "Anton-ing", at least not the "angry", "drunk", and "inconsiderate" parts. Very quickly learned that Anton is kind of a dick and isn't a fan of that.
Wanted to exaggerate the "top-heavy" shape and big arms, similar to the true Anton. Hard not to skip leg day when you don't have legs, y'know? Ended up being built like the bastard child between Eelektross and the Headless Ichthys lmao.
Can still walk/run on those little green flippers, just not very fast or well. Much more graceful within water or fluids similar to water (and if powered up a specific way, can swim through the air and solid materials as if they were water).
Has axolotl-style frilled gills in place of where ears would be on a human.
Mouth colors are inverted: Instead of red insides with a green tongue, it's green insides with a red tongue. Also has Pharyngeal jaws (not shown).
The thick black outline framing the sides of its underbelly is meant to resemble Anton's suspender straps.
The two different pupil/iris shapes (particularly the rectangular left eye) are a shout-out to the original thing that inspired this. The W-shape of the right iris/pupil is meant to resemble the pupils of cuttlefish.
I hope you like it!

All large planets in our Solar System have rings, and it has been suggested that Mars may have had a ring in the past. This raises the question of whether Earth also had a ring in the past. Here, we examine the paleolatitudes of 21 asteroid impact craters from an anomalous ∼40 m.y. period of enhanced meteor impact cratering known as the Ordovician impact spike, and find that all craters fall in an equatorial band at ≤30°, despite ∼70 % of exposed, potentially crater-preserving crust lying outside this band. The beginning of this period is marked by a large increase in L chondrite material accumulated in sedimentary rocks at 465.76 ± 0.30 Ma, which, together with the impact spike, has long been suggested to result from break-up of the L chondrite parent body in the asteroid belt. Our binomial probability calculation indicates that it is highly unlikely that the observed crater distribution was produced by bolides on orbits directly from the asteroid belt (P = 4 × 10–8). We therefore propose that instead, a large fragment of the L chondrite parent body broke up due to tidal forces during a near-miss encounter with the Earth at ∼466 Ma. Given the longevity of the impact spike and sediment-hosted L chondrite debris accumulation, we suggest that a debris ring formed after this break up event, from which material deorbited to produce the observed crater distribution. We further speculate that shading of Earth by this ring may have triggered cooling into the Hirnantian global icehouse period.

Preboggión (Italian wild greens)
Preboggión (Italian: prebuggiún) is a dish of wild greens originating in the provinces of Liguria and Parma in northern Italy. The term is probably derived from the Ligurian verb "preboggî," which means "to pre-boil." One folk etymology connects the term to a story about Goffredo di Buglione (Godfrey of Bouillon), leader of an army during the First Crusade, who was supposedly healed from an illness by a mixture of foraged plants: the herbs were, in Latin, "pro Buglionis," or "for Buglione" (p. 333 FN 183). In Sori—a municipality in Genoa, Liguria—the term "boggión" means "mixture," and is used to refer to a miscellanious set of items: it is possible that this meaning is derived from the food.
Some Ligurian families insist that preboggión properly consists of 7 herbs, though others say 12. Which plants will end up in a batch of preboggión is determined by the region and season: traditionally, the plants will all be foraged, making this a dish with a very strong sense of location. Interviews show that modern foraging behaviors in Italy are strongly variable based on location.
Preboggión may be eaten on its own, after frying lightly in olive oil with some garlic, but it is also used as a torte filling, eaten with pasta, and added to soups. The most well-known use of preboggión, though, is as a filling for pansooti (Italian: "pansotti")—a type of over-stuffed ravioli usually eaten with a walnut cream sauce. Dishes involving preboggión are especially popular on Sundays and days of abstinence from meat, such as Christmas Eve and Lent.
Preboggión may also be combined with potatoes to make "contorni," or vegetable side-dishes (singular: "contorno"). Immigrants from Liguria and Valtaro, Parma brought a similar dish to the USA: "sprubejung," from "preboggión," is a mixture of sautéed greens and boiled potatoes.
Recipe under the cut!
Patreon | Paypal | Venmo
Ingredients:
Mixed greens
Olive oil, to fry
Garlic, chopped
Red wine vinegar (optional)
Salt, to taste
Preboggión is made in Liguria with various wild potherbs, including but not limited to:
chicory (Chicorium intybus); cicoria
borage (Borago officinalis); borragine
asters (Genus Aster); Astro
stinging nettle (Urtica dioica); ortica comune
rampion (Campanula rapunculus); campanula
common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale); dente di leone
lichwort (Parietaria officinalis); gamba rossa
bristly hawkbit (Leontodon hispidus); dente di leone comune
chard (Beta vulgaris); bietola di prato
wild fennel (Foeniculum vulgare); finocchio
wild radicchio (Hyoseris radiata)
wild asparagus (Asparagus acutifolius); asparago selvatico
wall-rocket (Diplotaxis tenuifolia); ruchetta selvatica
anise (Pimpinella anisum); anice comune
common sow-thistle (Sonchus oleraceus); grespino comune
red valerian (Centranthus ruber); cornacchia, favoia (mature leaves)
English common name (Latin binomial); Italian common name
I looked in my area for these species, where available, and for plants in the same genus, where unavailable. I used (left to right, top to bottom) chicory, white-panicled aster (Symphyotrichum lanceolatum), wall-rocket, nursery bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta), prickly sow-thistle (Sonchus asper), common dandelion, and dead-nettle.
Tumblr media
Instructions:
1. Wash plants thoroughly. Boil in salted water for 10-15 minutes, or until plants are tender and bitterness is reduced. Drain.
Tumblr media
2. Heat olive oil in a large pan. Add chopped garlic to taste and fry until fragrant. Add greens and stir to combine. Fry for a couple minutes.
3. Add a splash of red wine vinegar, if desired. Taste and adjust salt.

Ah my lovely request that has so many Grammer errors.
Kinda forgot I asked this tbh lol but yay tysm again @gallonwghost for doing this. I now at least have somewhat of a reference to took at :)
(lol is it bad that I want more doodles of this and context-)
Again, lemme know if you have any questions about this au and I will answer them :)
When you have an evil raj au and you need to make designs but you dont know how to even draw what your tryna go for and lack of motivation.
Me irl: Pain
What I have set for this au for the silly goober, he be Insane, sadist, antagonizic. Manipulate, And a cannibal and like blood, So yippee to that. (This does persist in my au to, but it's more compressed and sealed and well contained)
The only reason why this kinda happened was kinda mals doing (I have an Headcannon that raj and mal are cousins, and mal does see massive ponteinal in raj. And knows about this side of raj. (Yes I hc that mike still has his personalities, including Mal)
So whenever mals in control, he would try to get raj on his side.
Hahaha sorry for rambling about my au that I have and sharing one of my Headcannons
Hope you have a good day and or night.
If you have any questions about this au lemme know and i will answer them!
