what is bionic reading? what are the impacts of this design typography method?
A new way of reading might offer an answer to this question. It's called bionic reading, and it was created by the Swiss typographic designer Renato Casutt. Bionic reading works by strategically bolding parts of words to make text easier to process. bionic reading uses a special algorithm. On his website, Casutt says he has gotten feedback from dyslexic users who have understood texts more quickly with bionic reading. Millions of people have also been reacting to bionic reading on social media, and many people with dyslexia and ADHD have said bionic reading helps them focus.
I have attached a link from a TikTok video on social media explaining what bionic reading is and the difference it makes definitely for someone with dyslexia or ADHD. My personal response I've always been a very slow reader and need to read a couple times to understand what I've just read. Just from that TikTok post, I could read the text much more clearly and quickly than regular text.
This could be a concept I include with my typeface design and forming my typeface to be a mixture of weights. Potentially this could link into my idea concept and help the prevention of myopia and strain the eyes less if I created a typeface that allowed you to concentrate more. If I undertook this I would gather my peers to complete a survey to have their options on what typefaces and methods suit them if that could be easy to read or if they have any eye problems when reading certain fonts.
Examples with and without the method of bionic reading.
This is what a small block of text looks like with bionic reading. How do you feel while reading this? Do you wish this whole blog post was written this way, or are you glad this paragraph is almost over?
