What Is a Self-Sustaining Home?
A self-sustaining home, also known as a self-sufficient, autonomous or off-grid home, is designed to generate its own energy, produce its own food and manage its own waste to minimize or eliminate reliance on public utilities.
As Michael Reynolds, founder of Earthship Biotecture, a world leader in autonomous housing puts it, “Autonomous living… [is] direct living, get[ting] your energy directly from the sun, directly from the wind, directly from the biological systems on the earth.”
While sharing the goal of reduced environmental impact with “green” or “sustainable” homes, self-sustaining homes go further by allowing homeowners to break free from rising utility costs, unpredictable power outages and expensive food supply chains while using recycled or reclaimed building materials.
New construction projects can be designed to be self-sustaining from the start, but existing homes can be made more autonomous as well. Here are nine self-sustaining home ideas you can incorporate into your existing home.

Native plants blanket rooftop of Texas cabana
Snippet: The rooftop is blanketed with native plants that are visible from below, including sage and yucca. "The rooftop garden provides stunning views from the main house and helps to blend the cabana into the surrounding site," the team said.

This was our home last night - an #earthship. Everything is made in an earth-conscience way and is essentially self-sustaining,, with a mix of sustainable and upcycled materials. There is even a garden inside with several edible fruit and vegetable plants. . #taos #newmexico #biotecture #environmentfriendly (at Earthship Biotecture) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bxc4g1NFsNC/?igshid=vc60srl3gqi0

read ahead if u don’t mind academic/life goal related ramblings lol
..guys I’m in a pickle rn bc I’m debating switching majors from graphic to environmental design.. I also don’t think school setting is the right learning environment for me, and I’m kinda questioning every decision I’ve made up until this point. I honestly hate academic learning environments so much bc of my learning needs and all of the trauma it’s caused for me since elementary school. I hate the way I lose interest in my greatest passions when I’m forced to meet academic requirements and deadlines. My goal I think is to apply for ED and hopefully get accepted, and just to make it through the rest of the year in GD. After that I really wanna look at the Earthship internships/academy program in New Mexico bc my only real dream in life is to build my own biotecture house and live off the grid, and while I feel SO blessed and fortunate to be in school right now, I am just not sure whether it’s the right fit for me. I’ve never gotten to solely learn through hands-on experience, and I’m pretty heavily affected by the winters in Toronto.. I think really only time will tell what’s right for me, and I have a lot of decisions to make in the upcoming weeks. It’d be a lot easier to think about this stuff if I wasn’t so preoccupied with my workload.... I should rlly stop complaining now before I begin to spiral smh.. if anyone has advice pls hmu!!
