This post is in reference to an older post about my gripes with discord.

I got an interesting chance to see what the impact of injecting Discord conversations into my IRC UI is. I had tried this before in the past with bitlbee but the bitlbee Discord plugin is temperamental at best and completely nonfunctional at worst.

There’s an IRC channel for r/homestuck that is more or less defunct, but of course continues to have a small population who hang out in it and are near-eternally off-topic.

(side note: this is the fate of basically every IRC channel. I lurk in a channel for a modern fluid dynamics modelling program that is dominated by the same five people basically having drinks together after work online.)

At some point the IRC channels mostly migrated to a Discord server, but they rigged up a Relay Bot that links the IRC with the Discord, so you can either go to #homestuck on SynIRC, or track down the Join Discord link on Reddit. SynIRC presumably chosen because SynIRC is also home to the SCP IRC.

I’ve been having a good time hanging out in there! I log on and glance over the past 20 lines and jump in and it’s all fairly simple and fun! I don’t worry about who’s online and about roles and what I missed.

There’s three linked rooms in this server and they all exist as distinct channels of equal importance in my channel listing with no weird hierarchy and so when someone’s talking in #homestuck...2!, which I know I’m not looking at for now because they’re talking about some video game I don’t play, I don’t have to check The Homestuck Server and see who was talking I just Know implicitly without needing a desktop notification.

I can keep my eye on them by shunting them into my secondary IRC window where I still see what they’re saying but I can focus on other things or chat with a different channel, it’s really pleasant. I can even just whack my “mark all as read” hotkey and obliterate the unread notifications without even looking twice.

So once again it appears that the problem with Discord is just that i can’t Break Things Out, and keep tabs on them passively. Quiet channels take up too much space and you don’t want to give it to them, but noisy channels demand your attention all day.

Ultimately this comes down to me being a grumpy old denizen who thinks that you should still be able to absolutely ruin your UI with customizations that fly in the face of “intended use” but the problem is that I’m right too.

I'm an IRC kind of guy. I appreciate the simplicity of pure text chat, emoticons instead of emojis, and the vast array of IRC clients and servers to choose from, including the option to host your own. All of my interactive communication happens over IRC either through native IRC channels (like #linuxjournal on Freenode) or using a local instance of Bitlbee to act as an IRC gateway to other chat protocols. Because my IRC client supports connecting to multiple networks at the same time, I've been able to manage all of my personal chat, group chat and work chat from a single window that I can connect to from any of my computers.

Before I upgraded to IRC, my very first chat experience was in the late 1990s on a web-based Java chat applet, and although I hold some nostalgia for web-based chat because I met my wife on that network, chatting via a web browser just seems like a slow and painful way to send text across the internet. Also, shortly after we met, the maintainers of that network decided to shut down the whole thing, and since it was a proprietary network with proprietary servers and clients, when they shut it down, all those chat rooms and groups were lost.

What's old is new again. Instead of Java, we have JavaScript, and kids these days like to treat their web browsers like Emacs, and so every application has to run as a web app. This leads to the latest trend in chat: Slack. I say the latest trend, because it wasn't very long ago that Hipchat was hip, and before that, even Yammer had a brief day in the sun. In the past, a software project might set up a channel on one of the many public or private IRC servers, but nowadays, everyone seems to want to consolidate their projects under Slack's infrastructure. This means if you joined a company or a software project that started during the past few years, more likely than not, you'll need to use Slack.

I'm part of a few Slack networks, and up until recently, I honestly didn't think all that much about Slack, because unlike some other proprietary chat networks, Slack had the sense to offer IRC and XMPP gateways. This meant that you weren't required to use its heavy web app, but instead, you could use whatever client you preferred yet still connect to Slack networks. Sure, my text-based IRC client didn't show animated Giphy images or the 20 party-parrot gifs in a row, but to me, that was a feature. Unfortunately, Slack could no longer justify the engineering effort to backport web chat features to IRC and XMPP, so the company announced it was shutting down its IRC and XMPP gateways.

This is primarily for me to find next time I run into this issue! Having previously installed bitlbee on my OS X machine via homebrew & some elbow grease, I made a one-off password for the local bitlbee server I run to store my account credentials. Since I run the bitlbee server through Emacs and like a well behaved Emacs user, I hardly ever restart Emacs, I'm sure to have forgotten my bitlbee credentials between server restarts. At those times it's pretty useful to be able to find the bitlbee XML file that houses my username and encoded password. This is also useful in case I need to change other account setting things.

So, for bitlbee installed on OS X via homebrew, the account xml file is in the following folder on my machine:

/usr/local/var/bitlbee/lib/<username>.xml

and the bitlbee server wants the credentials like
