Friday, April 14: Soilwork, “The Undying Eye”

R.I.P. David Andersson (1975-2022)

The Underworld EP appeared as an addendum to Verkligheten, and its four tracks were something of a bridge between the more progressive approach Soilwork began adopting around The Ride Majestic and the more straightforward songwriting of their previous material.  As it was, “The Undying Eye” was both direct and a bit woolly, with David Andersson’s music and lyrics flowing nicely but also feeling abstract to the point of inscrutable.  What made it work was the band’s confidence- Andersson was a rather instinctive writer, and Björn "Speed" Strid clearly relished the chance to be more adventurous with his singing.  There was a strange dichotomy at work on “The Undying Eye”, as it was just as melodic and catchy as previous Soilwork numbers, but also felt completely distinct from what they had done before.  In that way the track showed just how far the band had come, and presented them in the midst of a rather intriguing evolution.

EPICA: 'We Already Started Working On New Music'

EPICA guitarists Mark Jansen and Isaac Delahaye spoke with Guitar Interactive at this year's Download festival in the United Kingdom about the progress of the songwriting sessions for the follow-up to 2021's "Omega" album. Mark said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): "We already started working on new music. I don't know, actually, the status of every bandmember, because everybody is now in their own home studios making music. So I know that I am; I know [Isaac] is, because he talked about it. But I don't know from everybody. I don't know, for example, Rob, if he has already [written] some songs. But personally, it's going well, and I'm in a flow of inspiration."

Added Isaac: "Well, I have a two-and-a-half-year-old, so my flow of inspiration is not really one hundred percent. But, yeah, I'm working on a couple of ideas, and, actually, for the next album I thought I kind of have to… You always wanna reinvent yourself; don't do the same thing. So I'm still scanning, like, what can I do to break out of the usual way of writing? If something happens with that or not, we'll see. But I just like to think it over and see what else I can do with those seven strings. So that's happening right now. Then after the festivals, we have some writing camps where we all get together and start to [put all the pieces] together, work on each other's ideas."

A couple of months ago, EPICA frontwoman Simone Simons told Czech Republic's Backstage TV about the band's plans for a new LP: "After this year, all the festivals, we're gonna start writing a new record… All the bandmembers start writing songs in their home studio by themselves, but I haven't heard any of those songs yet… When inspiration strikes, we just start writing. But we're gonna schedule writing sessions. And we're all excited to write a new record."

Regarding how the songwriting works in EPICA, Simone said: "Well, it's mostly that first they have some music, some demos, and then I start to come up with vocal lines for that. That is mostly how it goes. The guys start writing the songs and then they give me a listen so I can already come up with vocal lines and then they can continue writing the songs to support the vocal lines. Sometimes songs are written really fast; sometimes it takes long. And inspiration can strike at the weirdest times. So it's good that we always have the phone that we can quickly record melodies, whether it's for vocals or like a guitar riff or anything. Everybody has a home studio, so it's very practical to quickly record ideas. And then we get together. Because we live in four different countries; we don't live in the same village. And then we actually sit together and finish writing the songs."

EPICA played two shows as the support act for METALLICA — on May 17 at Stade De France in Paris, France and on May 28 at Volksparkstadion in Hamburg, Germany. EPICA was added to the METALLICA bill as the replacement for FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH.

Last November, EPICA released "The Alchemy Project" through Atomic Fire Records. The EP was co-written and performed with diverse guests ranging from extremists like FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE, Niilo Sevänen (INSOMNIUM) and Björn "Speed" Strid (SOILWORK) along with melodic masters like Tommy Karevik (KAMELOT),keyboard legend Phil Lanzon (URIAH HEEP) and Roel Van Helden (POWERWOLF) to a once-in-a-lifetime song with Simons, Charlotte Wessels and Myrkur.

Just one day after the release of its anniversary reissues "We Still Take You With Us" and "Live At Paradiso", EPICA celebrated 20 years of existence live last September at 013 in Tilburg, Netherlands, the same place where they played their first show (supporting ANATHEMA) back in 2002.

EPICA was formed by Jansen after leaving AFTER FOREVER in 2002, and the band quickly gained attention outside their home country, taking big steps towards becoming the leading symphonic metal superpower they have long proven to be. After their ambitious debut "The Phantom Agony" (2002) and the surprisingly eclectic sophomore work "Consign To Oblivion" (2005),the road took them to new heights via their first concept masterpiece "The Divine Conspiracy" (2007) and their global breakthrough "Design Your Universe" (2009). 2012's opus "Requiem For The Indifferent", 2014's bedazzling "The Quantum Enigma" and "The Holographic Principle" (2016),cemented their reputation as not only one of the hardest-working metal bands in the business but also as one of the best. With "Omega", the final part of the metaphysical trilogy they began with "The Quantum Enigma", they reclaimed the throne without so much as the blink of an eye, amassing three million-plus streams during the first week of the album's release.

EPICA Announces 'The Alchemy Project'

Dutch symphonic metallers EPICA will release "The Alchemy Project" on November 11 through Atomic Fire Records.

In the 20 years of their existence, EPICA has never shied away from challenges, twists and turns, weathering every storm and pushing the symphonic metal genre to heights no one even dared to believe in. Since 2002, the band featuring singer Simone Simons and her longtime musical partner Mark Jansen has released eight highly innovative and cinematic albums, has toured the world over and has left its mark as one of metal’s most prolific, most cherished and most admired success stories forever.

With "The Alchemy Project", EPICA sets another highlight in the band's 20th-anniversary year. Graced by a vivid and witty artwork by graphic wizard Heilemania, visual partner in crime for more that 15 years, EPICA embarks on a journey through seven extraordinary new songs. The first song they wrote for this seven-track offering was "The Final Lullaby", a fast-paced, intense clash between EPICA and the avant-garde rock of Norwegian legends SHINING (with saxophone!),graced with one of the biggest refrains you will hear all year.

"I've been a big fan of SHINING since the first time I heard them," bassist Rob Van Der Loo says. "Our intention with 'The Final Lullaby' was to make a mash-up between EPICA and SHINING so we thought it would be a good idea if I would come up with some riffs that would be typical SHINING and they would do the complete opposite."

Das Lied, angereichert durch ein von Daniela Alves meisterhaft inszeniertes Video, erzählt die Geschichte einer Frau, deren Geliebte sich auf den Weg macht, um im portugiesischen Kolonialkrieg zu kämpfen. Sie träumt jede Nacht von ihm und windet sich vor Schmerzen ... weil er nie zurückkommen wird. Paula duettiert mit dem renommierten Soilwork-Frontmann Björn „Speed" Strid, der zum ersten Mal auf Portugiesisch singt und eine majestätische und emotionale Darbietung abliefert. Spingersi sempre avanti, puntare sempre più in alto: In venti anni di esistenza, gli EPICA non si sono mai sottratti alle sfide, ai colpi di scena e alle svolte, superando ogni tempesta e spingendo il genere symphonic metal ad altezze in cui nessuno osava credere. Il primo brano che hanno scritto per questo lavoro di sette tracce è stato “The Final Lullaby”, uno scontro intenso e veloce tra gli EPICA e il rock d’avanguardia delle leggende norvegesi Shining (con tanto di sassofono!), impreziosito da uno dei più grandi ritornelli che ascolterete tutto l’anno. “Sono un grande fan degli Shining fin dalla prima volta che li ho sentiti“, spiega il bassista Rob van der Loo. “La nostra intenzione con ‘The Final Lullaby’ era di fare un mash-up tra Epica e Shining, quindi abbiamo pensato che sarebbe stata una buona idea se io avessi proposto alcuni riff tipici degli Shining e loro avessero fatto l’esatto contrario“.

  Igen terjedelmes anyagot ad rajongói kezébe Tarja, és amint látjuk, nemcsak szólólemezeiről, de az Outlanders nevet viselő projektjétől is szerepel a lemezen a Depeche Mode-klasszikus World In My Eyes feldolgozása, de a 2017-ben kiadott karácsonyi albumáról, a “From Spirits and Ghosts (Score for a Dark Christmas)” című korongról is hallható a német nyelvű O Tannenbaum.

Eközben befutott az új dal, amelyet mára ígért a Nightwish egykori fronthölgye, a szerzemény az Eye Of The Storm címet viseli, és az is kiderült: ezt a szerzeményt Tarja már évekkel ezelőtt megírta, és eredetileg a 2013-as “Colours In The Dark” címre keresztelt albumára szánta, de úgy gondolta, valamilyen különleges alkalommal fogja a nótát megjelentetni, és elmondása szerint ennek most jött el az ideje, és a fent említett különleges lemezen is helyet kapott.

Ezt az erőteljes és érzelmes dalt két olyan ország inspirálta, amelyek nagyon fontosak számomra: Finnország és Argentína. 

– utalt itt arra a tényre, hogy ő finn, férje, Marcelo Cabuli argentin, az énekesnő Finnországban nőtt fel, de több, mint tíz évet Argentínában is élt.

Jean Sibelius finn, valamint Ástor Pantaleón Piazzolla argentin zeneszerzőktől merítettem ihletet. Tulajdonképpen a dal olyan, mint egy harc, amely akkor dúlt a lelkemben, amikor még kerestem a helyem a világban, tehát egy rendkívül személyes dalról van szó.

Monday, October 3: Soilwork, “Forever Lost in Vain”

R.I.P. David Andersson (1975-2022)

If The Living Infinite was a logical culmination of how Soilwork’s sound had developed over the previous decade, the subsequent Beyond the Infinite EP indicated they were beginning to evolve.  Although it was recorded during the same sessions as The Living Infinite, “Forever Lost in Vain” was something of a bridge track: the song had many of the melodic death metal trademarks that Soilwork was known for, but between Jens Bogren’s smooth production and the ebb and flow of the arrangement, there was also something more esoteric and progressive happening here.  It was here that then-new guitarist David Andersson really announced himself- he largely played it straight on the double album, but on Beyond the Infinite he was more present as a lyricist and driving force, pushing Björn “Speed” Strid to try new approaches with both his vocals and the music (Strid actually wrote the music, but somehow Andersson’s influence was more clearly felt).  It wasn’t longer than usual, but “Forever Lost in Vain” wasn’t as linear and felt more layered and dynamic in its construction, and as a result was less conventionally metal than expected from Soilwork.  In that respect, the track was an early indication that the band was ready to evolve beyond where they had gone (“beyond the infinite”, as it were), and that’s what ended up happening, more or less.

TARJA TURUNEN Shares Previously Unreleased Song 'Eye Of The Storm' From Upcoming 'Best Of: Living The Dream' Collection

Former NIGHTWISH singer Tarja Turunenwill release her first-ever "best-of" collection, "Best Of: Living The Dream", on December 2 via earMUSIC.

A track from the collection, Tarja's previously unreleased song "Eye Of The Storm", has been made available and can be streamed below.

"It was the right time to finally release this song," Tarja explains. "It has a very deep feeling of closure in it. It's been influenced by two very important countries in my life: Finland and Argentina. It's an internal battle inside of me. Because at that time in life, I was really searching for my place in this world, where I belong as a person, as an individual."

Looking back on 15 extremely successful years of the Finnish singer's solo career, the "Best Of" contains not only Tarja's most well-known tracks, many of them newly remastered at Sterling Sound, and personal favorites from all six studio albums — "My Winter Storm", "What Lies Beneath", "Colours In The Dark", "The Brightest Void", "The Shadow Self" and "In The Raw" — but also the aforementioned "Eye Of The Storm".

"After all these years, I still really can't believe it's time for me to release a proper 'Best Of' album," Tarja says. "So many beautiful moments, unbelievable. It has been a dream to put together this collection. And I really hope that you will enjoy this as much as I did while making it."

The compilation was hand-picked by Tarja herself and will be released in a wide variety of formats, each featuring exclusive rarities and/or the previously unreleased two-hour "Circus Life" concert, which is eagerly awaited by fans, as well as upgraded versions of Tarja's music videos. Rounded out by high-quality artwork, deluxe liner notes, and many formats to choose from, this collection is a delight for casual fans, as well as superfans.

The standard version of the CD and vinyl contains 16 tracks (including the brand new single) as well as deluxe liner notes. The strictly limited mediabook holds 13 further tracks and the previously unreleased, two-hour live show "Circus Life". The strictly limited box set contains an additional 19 tracks selection of Tarja's projects including OUTLANDERS, four picture discs, six art prints, two posters, and a fine art print signed by Tarja.
