Black Annis

Black Annis (also known as Black Agnes or Black Anna) is a bogeyman figure in English folklore. She is a blue-faced hag or witch with iron claws and a taste for human flesh (especially children). She is said to haunt the countryside of Leicestershire, living in a cave in the Dane Hills with a great oak tree at the entrance.

She is said to venture out at night looking for unsuspecting children and lambs to eat, then tanning their skins by hanging them on a tree before wearing them around her waist. She would reach inside houses to snatch people. 

Legend has it that she used her iron claws to dig her cave out of the side of a sandstone cliff, making herself a home there which is known as Black Annis' Bower Close. The legend led to parents warning their children that Black Annis would get them if they did not behave.

She was also known to hide in the branches of her oak tree waiting to leap upon unsuspecting prey. Other traditions stated that when she ground her teeth people could hear her, giving them time to bolt their doors and keep away from the window. It is said that cottages in Leicestershire were purposely built with small windows so that Black Annis could only get a single arm inside. When she howled she could be heard 5 mi (8.0 km) away, then the cottagers would fasten skins across the window and place protective herbs above it to keep themselves safe.

Inspired by old English folklore of the ancient blue-skinned hag Black Annis, who was said to live within an earthen cave in the Dane Hills of Leicestershire. I have joined with artist Devin Forst to bring the chill and dark of Black Annis to you all! There is a dark and wintery quality to this tea blend, appropriate for a long and eerie winter’s night…companioned by the hag brewed up from Devin's imagination for your delight and torment.

Anise seed, mint, and bergamot swirl together for a highly aromatic and appropriately wintry top note that is grounded in rich black tea and the light slightly floral quality of oolong. Butterfly pea flower and cornflower give us her characteristic blue tinge to the blend that fade as they brew, like the light fades on those early winter nights.

Within seconds of hitting play on this song I fell in love with the eerie flute melody. And then it got better (and eerier) from there. Maybe there should be more creepy songs about creatures from folklore! (For what it's worth, I had never heard of Black Annis before this song and immediately went to read the Wikipedia page. I do love creepy folklore.)

Sure, she was a little anxious, a little scratched up, her dark black hair always patchy and thin from how she picked at it, but she was soft-spoken, sweet, and kind to a fault, always mourning the transients who went missing in her own special way, naming cuts of meat after them that she would sell at a heavy discount. Then on one foggy day, she wound up missing herself, and an investigation of her home and workplace turned up hundreds of human teeth, causing the town to realize that their beloved butcher, who they once thought could do no wrong as it was simply not in her nature, was a horrific monster and they had, unknowingly, been helping her get rid of most of the evidence for years. And now she was in the Entity's world, still putting on the facade of a kindly, plump, harmless woman towards any groups she came across. That is until she got someone alone...

Captain America (Steve Rogers): Excuse me? Miss?

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): Annis looked over her shoulder. "Yes dear?"

Captain America (Steve Rogers): Steve raised a hand to show he meant no trouble. After all, she was just a civilian. "I think I'm lost in these woods. Could you point me in a path leading back into town?"

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): She hummed softly, lightly tapping her chin. "Oh, well, you know, I've been wondering that myself...Maybe we can look for a way out together?"

Captain America (Steve Rogers): "Oh sure! I would be more than happy to accompany you while we figure this out together. After all, we don't want you getting hurt, right?" He smiled.

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): She giggled softly, bright green eyes crinkling up at the corners. "No, no we certainly don't." she wiped her hands off on her apron, then took his hand gently.

Captain America (Steve Rogers): Steve clutched hers back and walked off into the foggy forest with her, looking for a path. Despite his enhanced eyesight, he should see none. "Might I ask your name?"

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): "Annis Black." She answered him sweetly, gently bumping him with her hip. "And what's your name, handsome?"

Captain America (Steve Rogers): "Steve. Steve Rogers." He thought himself famous enough to go by his codename but he was too humble to give it to her. "Do you live around here?"

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): "A pleasure to meet you, Steve..." She trailed off, cupping her chin. "around here? No, no...I just got lost on a walk..."

Captain America (Steve Rogers): "I see..." Poor woman...she might have memory issues. "Do any of these landmarks look familiar?"

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): She looked around the foggy trees, "Afraid not...I've been in here for a few" Years. "Hours though....so I think I've been walking around in circles."

Captain America (Steve Rogers): "Hm...maybe if we tried to cut through the trees, we can at least reach a different spot..."

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): "A wonderful idea~" She chirped and started to waddle in another direction. Look at her go.

Captain America (Steve Rogers): "Hold on, miss." Steve took after her. She was surprisingly light on her feet for a woman of her...size.

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): She looked over her shoulder, staring up at him as she stumbled over a tree root. "Yes Steeeve~?"

Captain America (Steve Rogers): "Try to be careful. It's foggy out here." He offered her his hand. "Allow me."

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): She glanced down at his hand. She took it.

Captain America (Steve Rogers): He pulled her up. "Are you hurt?"

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): She rose to her feet, raising her skirt and glancing down at her scarred leg, her knee scraped and bleeding. "...Yes."

Captain America (Steve Rogers): "Oh, that isn't good." Steve knelt down on one knee. He took out a a napkin from one of the satchels on his outfit. "Gotta be more caareful in a place like this..."

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): She tilted her head a little and bunched up her skirt a little. "Don't go looking up my skirt now."

Captain America (Steve Rogers): Steve chuckled nervously. "I assure you my intentions are pure, ma'am." Steve then took out a small plastic bottle of disinfectant. "This might sting a bit..." He applied a bit to her cut.

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): She hissed lowly, digging her nails into his shoulder. "Owwwchie"

Captain America (Steve Rogers): Steve barely noticed, her nails not even cutting the skin. "Alright, worst part's over." He then applied some gauze to her leg. "There. Should keep you good until we find your house."

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): She shook her leg a little, then dropped her skirt back down. "I cannot wait to get home."

Captain America (Steve Rogers): "That makes two of us." He offered his hand again.

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): She took his hand and kissed the back of it before leading him through the woods.

Captain America (Steve Rogers): Steve nodded, not thinking much of it. Affection from a kindly old woman. It is simply just the way things are done around these parts...but it does seem like she has started leading him rather than vice versa.

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): She walked around trees and bushes until suddenly stumbling out onto what looked like a small town's mainstreet, or at least a chunk of it, the majority of buildings boarded up and in a state of disrepair.

Captain America (Steve Rogers): "Looks like we found a town...doesn't look like there's anyone around though." He looked around. "Do you think you live near here?"

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): She glanced up at a butchers, the painted sign declaring it 'Black's Butchers.' "We're home!"

Captain America (Steve Rogers): "Ah, you work at a butcher shop." Steve noted. That explains the smell of blood he was getting off of her when they first met...

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): "Excuse you. I own a butcher shop!" she put her hands on her hips.

Captain America (Steve Rogers): "Of course. I apologize for any insinuation otherwise." Guess Steve is a bit more old-fashioned than even he thought.

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): She hummed softly and walked up to the door, pushing it open and not even flinching at the stench of rotting meat that came flooding out.

Captain America (Steve Rogers): Steve covered his nose. This poor woman doesn't realize most of her meat is rotting! Must be a result of her memory issues...

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): She walked inside and into the backroom. "C'mon boy."

Captain America (Steve Rogers): Steve followed her. Maybe he could clean up for her before he leaves...

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): The inside of the butchers was a mess, shattered glass, piling up garbage, maggots and files crawling around on the meat of an entire dead cow. It was hard to imagine this was just her being unaware.

Captain America (Steve Rogers): Still, Steve liked to give the benefit of the doubt and she was old...although, he's becoming less sure about leaving her on her own when he leaves. Maybe he should send someone back. "Do you have any family?"

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): "Oh, I don't think so, no." She walked up the stairs towards her apartment. "Though who knows what my siblings are doing now days."

Captain America (Steve Rogers): He followed. "Maybe I could contact one of them? They can help you out a bit?"

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): She stepped into her apartment, the space decidedly less filthy and covered in corpses. "If you think it will work."

Captain America (Steve Rogers): Okay, the corpses jolted Steve. He looked around in horror before an instinctive scowl formed on his face. "Miss, if you don't mind my asking...when's the last time you actually served anybody here?"

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): "Oooh goodness...it's been...five years? Nobody here really needs to eat and the ones that want to wouldn't like what I'd serve em....'cept maybe Bubba, but he's an odd boy."

Captain America (Steve Rogers): "No needs to eat...Bubba?" This situation was getting more and more confusing...and he didn't like it. "How about you come with me? This cannot be a healthy environment for a woman your age."

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): She put her hand on her hip, cocking her head to the side. "I am forty seven..."

Captain America (Steve Rogers): Ouch. Still, the corpses. "It's not a hygenic environment for anybody. Just come with me."

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): She glared up at him. "Why don't you make me?"

Captain America (Steve Rogers): "Because I don't want to...and I'm pretty sure you don't want that either."

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): She squinted a little "...I don't want to be lifted in a strong man's arms?"

Captain America (Steve Rogers): She still putting on the innocent act. "If you would prefer to be carried, I can arrange that. Just come over here."

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): She sat on the couch, crossing one leg over the other. "I'd rather you come to me~"

Captain America (Steve Rogers): Steve gave her a suspicious look, especially since he wasn't sensing any real malicious intent from her. ut he walked over to her anyway, reaching down to lift her up...

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): She threw her arms around his neck and pulled him down, forcing his face right in between her jugs.

Captain America (Steve Rogers): Oh god, not a pleasant smell for him...plus, this a type of harassment he was prepared to deal with today. Still, he was a good enough position so he grabbed her hips and easily lifted her up, turning around to leave the room.

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): She calmed down and released his head, resting her chin on his shoulder. "Weeee"

Captain America (Steve Rogers): Steve internally sighed as he went back down the stairs with her in tow. Once back outside, he searched for somewhere with more people. He can find some directions, get back to an actual town and turn this woman over to the authorities.

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): She gently kneaded at his back, sighing happily as he went back into the fog. "There's no way out of here."

Captain America (Steve Rogers): That wasn't encouraging. "And how would you know that?"

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): "Cause i'm not the oldest killer here." She nipped his ear.

Captain America (Steve Rogers): "Don't do that. There are other killers?"

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): "Yes, in fact i'm a more harmless one because well, look at me, I'm huggable."

Captain America (Steve Rogers): "...Just where we are?"

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): "I honestly have no idea what it's called. I just call it home, cause that's what it is now."

Captain America (Steve Rogers): Steve took out his communicator and sent out a signal...nope. Still dead. Like an EMP went off. And Tony said this stuff was supposed to work even out in the BErmuda... "Do you know where the other killers are?"

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): "I tend to keep my distance from them, most of them don't play well with others even if you're on the same side. And I don't like getting stabbed, do you like getting stabbed?"

Captain America (Steve Rogers): "I like helping others. And not being lost. If I find one of them, there's a chance I can get better answers."

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): "Half of them don't or can't talk and the other half are assholes. You're better off sticking with me since you're clearly too strong for me to take down." she kissed his neck gently. "Mwah. You're safe."

Captain America (Steve Rogers): Steve nearly cringed. "Not to be judgemental put those in glass houses shouldn't toss stones. know how to conduct myself around those with bad manners. I just need find one of the ones who talk and we can...have a discussion. Then, I might be able to find a way out of here."

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): "Steve, try to hurt me." She huffed.

Captain America (Steve Rogers): "Why?" He asked. Dangerous or not, he wasn't exactly about to hurt a middle-aged woman for no reason.

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): "I want to show you that, as you're clearly the prey item here, you aren't going to be allowed to." She cupped his cheeks. "Squish."

Captain America (Steve Rogers): Steve squinted and suddenly released her. Should be enough to jostle her without actually hurting her.

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): He would have dropped her, if his hands moved themselves from her hips, which they did not.

Captain America (Steve Rogers): "...Do you want to be hurt or not? Stop clutching onto me."

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): "I'm not." She loosed her legs grip on him.

Captain America (Steve Rogers): Steve moved his arms back to his side, as far away from her hips as he could get them.

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): She slid down slowly. "Weeee"

Captain America (Steve Rogers): Steve wqatched, unamused. "I'm not going to attack you."

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): She landed on the ground. "Because you can't."

Captain America (Steve Rogers): "Because I won't."

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): She ran a finger over his crotch. "Not even if I do this?"

Captain America (Steve Rogers): He slapped her hand away. "Stop that."

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): She whined cutely. "So ruuude~"

Captain America (Steve Rogers): "You touched me without my consent. Not only is that rude, that's illegal."

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): "To be fair, Steve, I am a serial killer."

Captain America (Steve Rogers): "Exactly. Remember what I said about glass houses earlier?"

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): She stuck her tongue out. "What, am I an asshole? i gave you all the information I had. There's no way out."

Captain America (Steve Rogers): "To you. I guess if you're not going to be cooperative, I should leave you here."

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): Her eyes sparkle and she hugged his leg. "Nooo! Mine!"

Captain America (Steve Rogers): "No. I'm leaving. If there really is no way to leave here, there's no need to turn you into the authorities since you're stuck here too."

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): She rubbed her cheek against his thigh. "No kissing and cuddling?"

Captain America (Steve Rogers): "Absolutely not."

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): She huffed and rose to her feet. "Hmph. So rude."

Captain America (Steve Rogers): "Not repeating myself about the glass houses thing. Goodbye."

Black Annis, a cannibalistic butcher (DBD oc): She walked back into the fog.
