Year of the (Black Velvet) Rabbit! I started these for the new year but gave up on most drawing until now. For younger "aspiring rockstar" Newt I wanted to design an over-the-top costume inspired by rabbit skeletons and that extra fluffy hair if you look up Third Watch.

For younger Hermann I wanted to give him the slightly curled hair and earring of younger Burn and some slightly newer clothes by the movie's standards. He has vaguely rabbit-ear shaped headphone wires. Also, I collect cassettes and think Newt would use them for his music when not recording research notes. He has sold 0 copies. Definitely leaves them in libraries, though. (Bonus original planning doodle below!)

For any fellow Black Velvet Rabbits rockstar Newt Geiszler groupies out there, I’ve revamped my BVR logos and put them up on Redbubble and Threadless just in time for the Pacific Rim 10 year anniversary! I’ve also added my high res re-creation of the logo from Hermann’s SPACE CHAMPION helmet from his drift sequence with Newt. Both sites have something a little different to offer in terms of range and look so you can fully customize your K-Sci gear. All logos are in black as well as white font on as wide a variety of colors and items as possible.

Me, watching Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio with a brain fulla Pacific Rim: "Heeeeeey it's the Black Velvet Rabbits!" Me, realizing that Guillermo del Toro has wanted to make a Pinocchio movie since forever now: "....Waaaaait a sec is the name of Newt's band a reference to the black rabbits in Pinocchio?"

It's been a few years, but I'm still working on this bad boy - my personal playlist for Newton Geiszler's band "Black Velvet Rabbits"! You'll find both English & German tunes on there as songs I can see the band play, as well as some that simply remind me of them thematically.

Worlds collide when Hermann learns that BVR are playing a show in town and Dr. Geiszler finally reaches out to him for a long-awaited first meeting. Falling in love through compositions both penned and notated: a novel length, slow burn Newmann story from first meeting to beyond canon.
