Is this trend this inclusive and soley focuses on self growth and health? 

The popular trend #thatgirl #becomingthatgirl is also called with another name by many which is Vanilla Girl trend. Which tells a lot about what this trend offers and what it lacks. Both vanilla girl trend and that girl trend is highly criticized for making “whiteness” an aesthetic with the color of decorations, clothings and most importantly skins. Even in the page you come across when you search for that girl in tik tok the dominant color is white

For a fact in Tik Tok there are #blackthatgirl #latinthatgirl videos almost as much as just #thatgirl videos. But the views are not nearly as comparable. 

It is already an ongoing debate that the tik tok algorithm works in favor of white content creators but is is that the reason why there is such a gap between the views of those hashtags. The existence of these hashtags speaks for itself. There is no skin color specifying hashtag for a white that girl like there are one for the people of. It might as well be their decision to create a version of the hashtag cause for example #blackgirltiktok is a very strong, empowering and self expressive community but when we look at the videos posted in the hashtag most of the videos go like “becoming that girl non white version”. It’s reowning this ideal women trend that excludes them which is also a strong statement. 

As it is in the #blackgilrtiktok and #blackthatgirl the content creators tend to also modify the trend in a different direction; including the same routines, emphasizing more on mental health but still promoting a very refined and cleaned life style.

On the other hand there are some people of color who believe this trend is actually stolen by their daily life and style which would have been called and was used to be called ghetto when they did (like minimizing the life style, doing no make up make up, slicked back hair and so on) turned and rebranded into a super white trend as if it’s a new invention. It also is found to be disturbing that this trend is being called clean girl trend since it’s been “stolen” by white girls, considering how especially black people had to deal with allegations about them being dirty because of the color of their skin. While some people of color are owning and rebranding the trend carefree of the exclusion many believe that this trend is too sinister and should be avoided to rebrand it to be white and use it as a commercial trend.
