the bugs in bitb are SO interesting to me like, while rolan was talking 2 his parents they said “they didn’t know they weren’t us” and the whole deal w Kian’s resurrection where he had to make a sanity roll because he got his memories AND the bugs memories. and the whole fact that when you get liquefied you also still seem to be aware, at least to some extent. (e.x. kian distantly singing the revival song, fingers inside the weird webbing described to be twitching and the human face on rolan’s window that was silently screaming) idk theres just enough plausible biology and enough weird eldritch shit that makes me want to rotate them in my mind

Rolan didn’t realize he loved the other two until it was too late. Until it had been years since they’d spoken, even longer since they’d seen each other. And when he realized, he didn’t know what to do. How to deal with the fact that he loved two people he could barely even say he knew anymore. He didn’t understand how he could love concepts, memories filled with laughter and affection and the always somewhat present smell of smoke.

But he did. He loved them. Felt his heart skip a beat when a girlfriend’s dyed blonde hair momentarily made him mistake her for Kian. His body warmed up when she spoke of a fantasy story she’d read, explaining all the little details that Rolan would remember for the rest of his life in the same exact way that Rand would. When he heard a song on the radio, and his first thought was still “Kian would like this”. When the smell of smoke and alcohol and weed that always clung to Rand’s attic bedroom never quite left him.

Kian knew he loved the other too far too early, before anything could be done about it. When their biggest worries were still exams rather than missing sisters or corpses that nobody else could see. And he hated himself for it, hated how quickly and easily his love turned from something acceptable into something they’d hate him for. Hated how no matter how hard he tried he couldn’t get rid of the love he felt for them, how each time he hugged or just sat near them it would feel forbidden, like a secret they all had to keep but only he knew about.

But he couldn’t stop the way he felt. How his heart hammered in his chest when Rand rested his head on his shoulder because it was still normal to him. How his body burned when Rolan helped him bleach his hair during the early hours of the morning, talking about everything and anything to pass the time while they waited. How he mourned the friendship he still had with Rand, now tainted with lies because that was the only way Rand could still care for him. How he still felt such a desperate need and pain when yet another call to Rolan went unanswered, his words and pleas falling to nothing as he knew the other would never hear them anyways.

Rand only understood that he loved them when they were gone. He realized with fear and pain and yerning that the betrayal and loneliness he felt when they left wasn’t born just from his best friends leaving him behind. And he didn’t know how to feel, how to deal with it. Just like he didn’t years later, when he was left behind again, both of them gone somewhere he couldn’t bring himself to follow, only remembering how he felt when Rolan Deep and Kian Stone were both nothing but memories a few people held and empty graves he left flowers to.

He loved them for the rest of his life. His heart still skipped a beat whenever he passed by Rolan’s home, like he was still expecting the other to sneak out of the back door and join him in whatever he was doing. His body always felt cold and hollow, like something was missing, whenever someone touched him with the same care and gentleness that Kian always had. He locked up in terror whenever he heard the clicking and buzzing of ordinary bugs that had seemingly overtaken Galloway since the hive died. He screamed when the phantom flesh and blood that forever coated his barely living body wrapped around him tighter in a mockery of an embrace.

Rand loved the other two for the rest of his life. And he hated it more than anything.

some spoilers for bitb ‼️‼️ sorry for how long this is I like thinking about rolan.

rolan looked like a Huge nerd in highschool. like. big ass glasses, crappy little patchy facial hair. the works. (ty to @tragicfaggots for this one + inspiring me to make this post)

rolan meets kian first, they work on a history project together in 8th grade history

at some point kian sneaks out of class, dragging rolan along with him, to meet with rand

rand doesn't think too much of rolan but after kian keeps bringing him around he warms up to him

they really bond when all rand and rolan discover they both have a love for dnd, and it's history from there (they drag kian into it soon after)

rolan smoked in highschool, which is why rand and kian react so surprised in the first ep when rolan says he doesn't smoke. also the reason he gets back into it once shit starts Going Down

during college he had a few relationships, mostly nice girls he met in class but also a few guys in secret (spreading my fruity rolan propaganda)

speaking of that, kian and rolan like. gaydar each other. one of the many reasons kian takes to rolan so much.

kian first confides in rolan after he had that experience with the football player, rolan makes fun of him for getting with a football player but actually supports him all the way

rolan shared an apartment with a few other college students during his early years at law school

they had a cat that rolan found that he convinced them to let stay

the cat, named Zeppelin after rand, doesn't trust rolan AT ALL on account that it can kinda sense that he's, y'know, a little buggy.

zeppelin eventually comes to trust rolan and absolutely Loved him, zeppelin comes with him when he gets his own apartment after becoming a lawyer fr

rolan was the nerd in highschool who didn't go out too much, aside from the party that got rachel killed, but in college he let himself be more free and go out more

the first time he drank alcohol he was puking for Days and super out of it

bro just thought that he couldn't handle his alcohol/was a lightweight, but no he was just A Bug. he eventually did build a tolerance to it through small drinks at parties

rolan met most of the men he saw at those parties, never really at school

rolan Loves fruits and flowers, this is made more extreme after he's bugged at the lake and his bee brain is attracted to the sweet smells/tastes

literally everyday at school mans could be seen eating fruits as snacks, mostly berries

rand always bought rolan strawberry ice cream after he realizes, rolan eats it at rand's house whenever he came over

rolan still ate that ice cream in college and it always reminded him of rand

he always got sad, he ate the ice cream whenever he felt bad as a comfort food, but everytime it reminds him of who he left behind in Galloway. always makes him a little homesick, for his parents and for his best friends

especially the one who always bought his that same strawberry ice cream, the one who probably resented him for leaving.

just finished ep 2 of bitb and holy shit everything related to the funeral was SO good. condi is so incredible at conveying emotions, like BELIEVABLE STRONG EMOTIONS, through voice acting alone. almost teared up myself wtf.

also, this whole scene gave me uhh hope? for future personal dnd sessions bc i’m kind of unsure about my own ability to play characters, all i’ve ever done is dm and only in pretty short campaigns so i don’t really know how to access real emotions through characters or npcs yet and whatnot

but condi played this shit so well that something genuinely clicked within me i think
