Hello Loa. I kept thinking about making a post, but I thought it was too emotional of me and I don't like to be so emotional. But I just wanted to thank you for all your time invested in this community (you could be using your time to do something else and you're here) because codeblr really started with you. You spend your time writing texts gathering resources, giving support and always encouraging and sharing new profiles that are starting. This is very big and important. And that's why I also like to call you the queen of the tumblr code community . Once more, thank you.
Now to close, if you want to answer. What advice would you give to your past version and what do you think could help others at the same time (regardless of what it is)?
Tumblr media
Hiya Bea! 💗
I'm truly moved by your message and honestly, there's nothing wrong with being emotional. It's heartfelt messages like yours that make all the time and effort spent on this community worthwhile~! 🌷
When I started this blog, there were two blogs I could find that were “codeblr” related that I followed! Sadly after a month, one deleted their blog and the other stopped posting so, to me, I was the only one left. I continued to post because I hoped to create a space where everyone who shares this love for coding could learn, grow, and connect. I wanted a Codeblr community and I wanted it to grow! I’m even more happy that now there’s lots of more women programmers to connect with as well! To know that me posting about my code for the day made such a difference is incredibly rewarding~! 🌻
I think a few months after I created my blog, you @web-dev-with-bea came along, around the same time @code-es joined too! I was sooooo excited as I was like “New coding bloggers! Yay! And they’re girlies like me? Double yay!” and started interacting with you two more! I loved see you two post about your progress~! 🌹
It's been a pleasure watching this community blossom into the vibrant digital garden that it is today. Each new 'flower' (or coder, in our case) brings a unique color and beauty to our shared space. I may have planted the first seed with my first post about learning Java, but it's thanks to everyone here, including you, that this garden has grown so beautifully~! 💐 (Trying to be poetic…)
As for the title 'queen of the Codeblr community', I humbly accept 👸🏾 but only with the understanding that a queen is nothing without the support. I want to thank YOU, as well. Your participation, your eagerness to learn and contribute, help and encourage literal strangers on the internet, are what truly define our community~! 🌺
Lastly, if I could reach back in time to speak to my past self, there are several things I'd say, which I believe can also serve as advice to others:
Start where you are with what you have
Embrace failure as a part of the process
Consistency is key
Don't shy away from asking for help
Celebrate every victory, no matter how small
Be your own cheerleader
Keep the bigger picture in mind
Take care of yourself
Thanks Bea for this amazing ask 💗

Glitch Tech Verse
Tumblr media
[ P.S: Please do not reblog or steal! This is for personal use. ]
"Prepare to maul!" ~ Kanako's catchphrase
STORY
Kanako 'Arielle' Ryuuzaki is a Glitch Tech who works at Hinobi's technology store in the Osaka branch. Her gamer tag is 'Li-O-ness'. Inspired by the legacy of her late grandmother, Hanako Ryuuzaki, a powerful female figure in the industry who paved the way for aspiring female coders in Japan, Kanako developed a passion for gaming and coding through her grandmother's influence. But after her grandmother passed away, she stopped playing video games for a while because it reminded her too much of what she had lost.
During one of her 'dampened' days, her brother, Kanata, tried to cheer her up by starting up some of their favorite old video games. She was invited and even dared to play. At that moment, she remembered how much she had loved and been passionate about video games. Encouraged by her family, especially her older brother Kanata, she resumed her old hobby once more. This not only rekindled her passion but also helped her recover from mourning.
The Birth of Team RQ (Red Queen)
Kanako first met Noburu in a bookstore, and they ended up fighting over the latest manga release of Blood+, where both women were swiftly expelled and blacklisted (and remain so to this day). At Glitch Tech Center, the two were shocked and dumbfounded to find themselves together again. And they had been assigned to work together because no other Tech could handle them, as one was 'hot-tempered', while the other was, well, 'Noburu'.
For several months, they had tense and difficult interactions with one another. After enduring several disasters and near-catastrophic events, they were able to bond and rely on each other, growing closer and stronger as a team. This led to their friendship blossoming as well. They even entered several gaming tournaments, and as a tribute to their first meeting, they named their team 'RQ a.k.a Red Queen'.
EXTRA INFO
Kanako is part French from her mother's side. Her grandfather insisted that his grandchildren must have at least a French name. The family compromised with a middle name, which her grandfather would often use when addressing her.
Kanata 'Michel' Ryuuzaki is her older brother (8 years older), known by the gamer tag 'saber_tooth007'. He was previously a pro gamer who also taught Kanako about gaming and hacking. Now retired from the e-sports scene, he now manages the Hinobi store in Kyoto and serves as the director of Glitch Techs' Kyoto branch. Kanata developed a sister complex, as he often looked after and practically raised her, as their parents were frequently busy with work when they were younger.
Learning programming and hacking skills through her grandmother and brother, she has since expanded on that knowledge to apply hacking and programming to glitch tasks.
Kanako still has one of those dampened days, especially close to her grandmother's death anniversary.
Currently, Kanako is staying with Noburu in an employee accommodation provided by Hinobi. After being caught multiple times returning home late, past midnight, from her 'job', Kanata somehow managed to convince and reason with their parents to let Kanako move into the Hinobi employee accommodation. There, she could learn to be 'independent' and only the 'best of the best' gamers could work in the Hinobi store. Surprisingly, they agreed, but with one condition. Kanako had to prove to them within a year that she could successfully balance her job, and her studies, and achieve good results, which she did.
Due to her popularity as a female gamer, Kanako switched to homeschooling because she frequently received threats. Notably, she narrowly escaped an attack by the jealous girlfriend of her competitor.
Her late grandmother taught her and nurtured other activities besides video games. She often told them, "There is a life outside of the TV screen." Through Hanako, Kanako was introduced to ikebana, the art of flower arrangement, which she has a talent for. Kanako now takes lessons in the art and even enters competitions for it.
Kanako owns a glitch pet, a battle cat, called Kirara, which was a birthday gift from her brother and Noburu. Kirara is a giant panther with white fur and black spots, black eyes with blue scleral, and two stripes on her tail. She is equipped with a saddle capable of carrying several people into battle like a steed. However, she also has ferocious claws, making her more formidable in combat than a mere glitch.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
Doctor Strange seeks to protect a young girl who can travel across universes but an old ally has been corupted by a magical tome.
It was a refreshing change to have the main villain of a marvel film be a semi-ally rather than a slightly larger version of the protagonist, although they are comparable in terms of magic style. The playing field was levelled slightly by assistance from alternate univers cameos of other comic and movie heroes and villains which was fun.
Although most of the CGI was the usual Marvel standard like the alternate realms, there are some parts that just look too odd and they usually involve the faces of certain characters, such as Strange’s third eye. This is the result of exploiting creative designers and coders rather than paying some of the most important workers in a business what they’re worth.
There was some more lore and plenty of connections to other areas of the franchise which provided scale. It was good to see actors from the original film as well as alternate versions of Strange which proveded development without committing to actions in his actual history. It’s still unclear what Strange remembers about the Spiderman event since he references it but shouldn’t know who he is so it’s vague how much he remembers working with him.
Now that the multiverse has been cannonically added it sets things up to become a great deal more complicated and some of the overall lore has already become far too complicated, it’s set to become as undeciferable as the X-men timeline, which may even be loosely linked in now. The way to solve this without insulting the viewer is to hire writers that actually care about the franchises and pay them what they’re worth, and the same for the CGI artists.
6/10 -Just a cut above average-
-It took a week to install all the tree blossoms with wire as the sequence was filmed in winter.
-The character America Chaves has the the lesbian flag on her outfit which is cannonical to the comic book version and relates to her mothers in this incarnation.
-Earth 616 is designated as our Doctor Strange’s universe, this was also the universe designation Mysterio the MCU in Spiderman Far From Home (2019).

How Can We Nurture a Coder’s Mindset in Young Children?
Tumblr media
A world where children aren’t just consumers of technology but its creators. Where problem-solving and critical thinking are as natural as play. This is the world of coding, and it’s closer than you think.
Planting the seed
Let’s start with a little story. Once upon a time, there was a curious little girl named Anya. She loved puzzles, building blocks, and asking ‘why’. One day, her parents introduced her to a simple coding game. It was like a magical puzzle where she could command a character to move, jump, and collect treasures. A spark ignited within her. This is the essence of nurturing a coder’s mindset—igniting curiosity. It’s about fostering a love for problem-solving, logical thinking, and creativity.
Nurturing the sprout
For teachers and parents, this journey starts with creating a supportive environment. It’s about encouraging questions, celebrating failures (yes, failures!), and providing opportunities for exploration.
* Make it fun: Coding can be disguised as a game, a story, or even an art project. Online platforms offer a plethora of interactive coding games for kids.
* Start Simple: Begin with visual block-based coding platforms. These platforms use drag-and-drop blocks to represent code, making it easier for young minds to grasp.
* Encourage creativity: Let children create their own stories or games. This fosters imagination and problem-solving skills.
* Real-world connections: Relate coding to real-life situations. Explain how apps, websites, and even traffic lights work because of code.
* Computational Thinking: Introduce basic computational thinking concepts like patterns, algorithms, and debugging. Use everyday examples, like recipes or chore routines, to explain these concepts.
Watching it Grow As children grow, so does their coding ability. They start to understand the logic behind code, experiment with different approaches, and even collaborate with peers.
* Introduce text-based coding: As they become more comfortable, introduce text-based coding languages like Python or JavaScript.
* Project-Based Learning: Encourage children to work on small coding projects. This could involve creating simple animations, building interactive stories, or designing mini games.
* Coding Communities: Join online or offline coding communities. Sharing ideas and collaborating with peers can accelerate learning.
* Mentorship: Find a mentor or coding coach to provide guidance and support. A Blossoming Future Nurturing a coder’s mindset is not just about creating future programmers.
It’s about equipping children with essential 21st-century skills. Coding helps develop problem-solving, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication skills—all crucial for success in any field.
Remember, every child is unique. Some might be drawn to the logic of coding, while others might be fascinated by the creative possibilities. The key is to support their interests and provide ample opportunities to explore. So, let’s create a generation of young innovators. Let’s transform curiosity into code. Let’s watch as these young minds bloom into creators, problem-solvers, and leaders of tomorrow.

Title: Centerfold
Ship: Beca Mitchell/ Chloe Beale
She heard it before she saw it, the incessant chattering of her male coworkers. It was the same every single morning; a bunch of men with half-suits, or suit jackets, or loose ties, standing around a coffee machine that whirred and sputtered. They didn’t’ have a literal water cooler, but Beca knew if they did, they would be swarming like gnats to honey-soaked bread.
“Look what I have?” Jason said.
“Oh, shit dude,” Rick said.
Beca clenched the corner of the fridge tighter and leaned into the cold scent of cheese and half-rotted vegetables. She scanned the Tupperware containers that were stacked liked Tetris and tried to hear them over the hum of the Maytag. It was hard, but not impossible.
“She is… well, she is magnificent.”
She. Well, that didn’t’ narrow anything down. It could be a boat or a car or even a damn pool noodle. Anything that they could objectify and name and own. And really it was just as degrading as it sounded but in this case, they seemed to be talking about a magazine. A playboy that had the back folded over.
Her fellow Coders leaned with their backs to the coffee machine, each in pale button-downs, each practically drooling over whatever page they had turned to. Beca clenched her jaw and let the fridge fall shut with a muffled bang. Not muffled enough to keep her usually unnoticed presence under wraps.
They looked like well-groomed deer in headlights.
Jason snatched the magazine from his counterpart and hid it behind his back. Color blossomed against his cheeks and he started to squirm. “Nothing,”
“Nothing? Because it looks like a porn magazine to me.” She held her hand out and flexed her fingers. It was the universal sign for wanting him to hand over whatever wasn’t there. He eyed her suspiciously, then looked at Rick, then back at Beca before he shoved it forward.
She smiled and flipped right to the page that they were gawking at. Because not only did she feel kind of excluded from a mostly male office, but she also liked the deflated expressions that Rick and Jason wore like masks.
The picture was a mostly modest one if you didn’t count the placement of the woman. Most of this stuff was online now and it was rare to see a magazine in the first place. But this dawned a classic centerfold image of a woman. Her legs spread and the part that kept everyone guessing cut expertly with the spine. There was tan skin and curly russet hair, hand fingers dawned in gold rings.
She lifted an eyebrow because this was the thing her coworkers were gawking at? Not even a full picture. But it was enough to get them embarrassed and aroused and she never really understood why. Her eyes flicked down to the corner; in neat cursive writing, sat a name. Chloe Beale.
Beca had to stifle a cough, more of a choke after her throat dried entirely. She had to keep a cool face, but some red color must have gotten to her cheeks because now Jason was grinning like a fool again. He shoved his elbow into Rick’s arm.
“Nice, huh?”
“Yeah,” Beca croaked. She shut the magazine “Mind if I keep this? Just for a bit?”
Rick spoke to his friend “I mean sure, just don’t forget to lock the bathroom door behind you.”
Beca fought the urge to roll her eyes, but she did anyway. “Yeah, whatever.”
She tucked the magazine under her arm and left the breakroom then. There was a cacophony of typing and she nodded at a few people that offered her smiles as she walked towards her corner office. She beckoned her assistant as she walked with her free hand and closed the door behind them.
They had given her the space for “Human Relations” but the main reason for the privacy lay in the fact that Beca knew how to calmly talk down anyone, except for herself. She would have them leaving with a smile and a feeling of accomplishment even if she spun the bad news about sales in a different way. It was all about perspective, and right now her perspective was in shambles.
Emily closed the door behind them and stood there expectantly. She watched as Beca drew the blinds on the windows leading towards the office. She paced a few times, magazine in hand before stopping and staring at her assistant.
“Are you going to fire me?” Emily asked “Because if you are, just rip the bandage off Beca. I can take it.”
“I’m not going to fire you, Em”
There was a thick sigh of relief. It didn’t’ last long. Beca turned the page to the centerfold image once more and shoved it towards her friend. She frowned at it for a moment. “Oh?”
It took Emily the same amount of time to figure out the caption. She had turned the magazine vertically, her deep eyes widening and her mouth forming a thin line. “Oh! Oh my god.”
“It’s Chloe,”
“Your Chloe.”
Yes, her Chloe. Not anymore- it had been years since they had seen each other and even more time since they had spoken more than two sentences. But Beca didn’t’ think her childhood flame would turn towards nude modeling, and she didn’t’ figure that she would be the watercooler discussion of the day.
Her blood was running cold and she had to sit down. Instead, she settled for leaning against the edge of the desk and squeezing the bridge of her nose. She didn’t’ want to look at it, she didn’t’ want to think about her first girlfriend posing like that.
I mean- Chloe had every right to do so but that didn’t’ make her jaw drop any higher. “She looks nice,”
“Not helping, Emily.”
“Sorry, it’s just” The girl threw the magazine back on the desk. “You should reach out to her. The two of you… God the two of you had everything. There wasn’t’ one kid who didn’t idolize what you had.”
Beca nodded. She knew that, to a certain degree. They had met in middle school and stayed together until College. God, college was an absolute dampener and long-distance didn’t’ work for anyone, not even the strongest of people. They had been named homecoming queens both Junior and Senior year, only to break up on Beca’s porch in the stifling summer heat months later.
Emily the wide-eyed freshmen, the innocent friend. The one who Beca went to when she needed cheering up. They mixed all the flavors of Slurpee together at the local 7/11 and made something they called the Frankenice. It was stupid and tasted horrible but it made her feel better, and then it made her feel worse enough to throw up on the sidewalk.
That was years ago, and they had grown into adults. Beca didn’t’ try to contact Chloe, but she did look up her socials in vain. She was pretty; gorgeous and interesting and nothing ever hinted towards this. Not that it was bad and not that she disapproved of the lifestyle, but it made her ache. It made her regret not reaching out sooner. And that made her want to throw the magazine across the room.
“Wouldn’t it be kind of… I don’t know, obvious if I message her right after this thing printed?”
“Half the city is probably messaging her right now,” Emily blew air out of her nose but settled at the pointed glare she received “Look- she probably misses you. You guys didn’t end on bad terms, right? Just not ideal ones.”
Beca rounded her desk and flopped down in her chair. She pulled open her laptop, not blinking an eye when Emily pressed against her back and stared as she pulled open the tab for Instagram. She typed in Chloe Beale and her profile popped up along with four or five fan accounts for her. And Beca had been stupid not to do this before.
They pulled up her feed and Beca felt like she was intruding, but she wasn’t. This was a public and popular profile with pictures of Chloe in bikinis smiling widely and then a few of her at the mansion itself. But most were just joyous and filled her with warmth. She clicked on the messages, open to the public. She typed something and let it linger.
Emily scoffed, hitting the back of the chair. “Hey?... Really? That’s what you’re going with? What are you, Ten?”
“Okay, okay! What would you write?”
“Move please,” Emily shoved Beca to the side and spoke while her fingers worked against the keyboard. “Hey Chloe, how have you been? I know we haven’t spoken in years, but I would love to catch up. If you’re ever in New York, we should grab a drink or coffee.”
She sent it before Beca could object about it being too formal, or not formal enough. Emily shut the laptop and stood back. She was proud of herself and wore the smile that showed it. “Don’t touch that until tomorrow. Play hard to get even though you’re the one initiating conversation.”
“I-“
“No buts, even if she messages back right now, you don’t touch. No.” Emily pointed a finger at her. “I know how this works, I’m still in the dating scene.”

Five times Joan accidentally got a dog and one time she didn’t
Zoey x Joan
All ages
Fluff, humour, a little bit of emotional hurt/comfort
Zoey, Joan, Mo, several dogs Joan has no right owning...
Joan keeps accidentally acquiring new dogs. Until one time, she doesn't. Zoey doesn't know what to say.
Read on AO3
The first time: Burberry
“Sorry I’m late,” Joan said, sliding onto the bar stood opposite Zoey’s. “Work was chaos.”
“No problem,” Zoey responded with a smile, sliding a drink across the table towards her partner.
Seeing the drink, Joan’s eyes lit up. “You’re a life saver.” She put her bag on the table and reached eagerly for the drink.
When they’d arranged to meet for a mini-date after work at a nearby bar, this one sans karaoke, neither of them had anticipated Joan’s meeting with the board members running quite so late. Still, she was here now, and Zoey wasn’t going to let anything else ruin her night.
That was, of course, until Joan’s purse moved of its own accord.
“Uh, Joan, did your bag just move?”
Joan, who was busy sipping her cocktail, frowned before looking to her bag. “Oh. Yeah. That’s Burberry.”
Zoey squinted at the bag. “It says it’s Louis Vuitton,” she said, pointing towards the lettering all over the purse.
Joan rolled her eyes, smiling at her partner’s lack of awareness. “Yes, the bag’s Louis Vuitton,” she said, reaching for the purse. “It’s Burberry making it move.”
She opened the bag then, and the tiny head of a white miniature Poodle popped out, looking a little surprised by its surroundings.
“I thought she was arriving tomorrow,” Joan continued conversationally, as though she hadn’t just revealed that she had a puppy in her purse in a bar. “But my dog person screwed up and dropped her off today instead.”
Not quite knowing what to say, Zoey stared at the dog for several long seconds. Finally finding her voice, she tore her gaze away from the puppy to look to the brunette opposite her. “Cute dog.”
“She is,” Joan said happily. “You know, I’ve usually only had big dogs. They’re much better at scaring away paparazzi and stuff. But Burberry seems quite nice.” She frowned then. “I just hope Tomford and Hermés get on with her.”
“So, uh, you didn’t mention you were getting another dog,” Zoey said slowly, still a little baffled by what was happening.
“Oh yeah, well, I didn’t know. Not until lunchtime, anyway.” Joan frowned. “I think I may have subscribed to something?” She waved a hand dismissively. “Whatever.”
“You think you subscribed to something?” Zoey echoed. “What, like a dog-buying service? Do those even exist?”
The older woman fixed her with a look. “Zoey, if people want it, it exists. I’m sure there are dog-buying subscriptions. I mean, I pay my dog person to buy me dogs. That’s their job. Maybe I signed some subscription agreement when I signed the contract.” She shrugged, and took a sip of her cocktail. “I’ll have my lawyer look into it.”
Burberry, still in the bag, was starting to whine a little then, and she was attracting attention from other patrons.
“I’m not sure we should have a dog in here, Joan,” Zoey said then, noting some of the looks they were getting. “I mean, they serve food.”
“But I promised you a date night,” Joan responded with a frown.
“We never said the date night had to be out of the house,” Zoey offered, realising her partner felt bad about them leaving so soon. “We can go to my place, or your place, and watch a movie or something.”
“And you’re alright with that?” the other woman questioned.
Already slipping off her chair, Zoey smiled. “I wouldn’t have suggested it otherwise. Come on.”
Taking Joan’s hand, she tugged her from her seat. Joan grabbed her purse and followed the redhead towards the door.
The second time: Gucci
Joan hurrying into a meeting barely a minute before they were about to start was odd. She was a woman who hated people who weren’t punctual, particularly when it came to work. That hadn’t changed since taking over as temporary CEO of SPRQ Point, and Zoey couldn’t help but survey her partner with concern.
Of course, there was no way she could raise her concern in the middle of a business meeting, so she bit her tongue and turned her attention to her tablet while Joan hurried to get herself ready. It wasn’t until something was practically shoved under her nose that the redhead blinked up at her partner.
“Hold him, will you,” Joan said, sounding distracted.
On autopilot, Zoey accepted the small grey French bulldog and settled the puppy in her lap without question. A few people around the table frowned, but nobody dare ask questions as Joan began talking about the latest SPRQ Point device they were launching.
In all honesty, the puppy was pretty well behaved. Zoey suspected it was a little stunned, possibly too stunned to react to what was happening around it. The puppy sniffed her tablet, and her, and squirmed a little, but seemed alright with being sat on her lap for the forty-minute presentation. Occasionally, some of the other coders, team leaders, and managers around the table would shoot Zoey and the puppy a confused look, but they all seemed to know better than to say anything.
When the meeting was finally over, and people vacated the conference room, Zoey let out a sigh of relief.
“Care to tell me where this little guy came from?” Zoey asked Joan pointedly as the older woman put away her notes and tablet.
Joan glanced up in the middle of sorting through her things, before returning her attention to her bag. “Well, it turns out that subscription service doesn’t run out until the end of the month.”
Zoey blinked. “Uh... What?”
That earned her a look. “The subscription service, for the dogs. You know; the one we cancelled after I got Burberry last month?”
Considering the puppy had crashed their date night, Zoey wasn’t likely to forget, so instead she nodded. “But we cancelled it before the end of last month. So what’s with this little dude?” She held up the dog to emphasise her point. The dog yawned.
“Ugh, apparently they take the subscription money in the middle of the month, not the end. So by the time we’d cancelled, I’d already paid for this month. Hence,” she pointed towards the bulldog, “Gucci.”
Gucci yawned again, and curled up in Zoey’s lap. “Well,” the redhead sighed, “he is cute...”
“Exactly,” Joan said definitively. “Now come on, I’m treating you to lunch.”
Then she swept Gucci up from Zoey’s lap and disappeared out the conference room door.
The third time: Prada
“You know,” Zoey said with a poorly-hidden smirk, “when you texted to suggest a picnic in the park for lunch, I didn’t realise you’d be bringing a friend with you.”
At the teasing comment, Joan rolled her eyes, and looked over at the Australian Shepherd puppy asleep between them. “I’m sorry, ok? I don’t even understand where this one came from.”
“Well, guessing by the breed, I’m gonna say... Australia?”
Joan gave her partner a look at that, clearly unimpressed by the joke. “I’m serious, Zoey! I don’t even know if I’ve paid for her! And, of course, she had to be delivered right before I was supposed to meet you for lunch...” She shook her head, picking at the food she’d bought them both for lunch. “I was going to take you to that new Italian place.”
Zoey’s eyes went wide at that. “The... The super expensive place?”
Joan nodded.
“Oh.” Zoey didn’t know what else to say. “You really don’t have to, Joan. I, I mean, I’m fine with a picnic. Actually, I think I might prefer it. Not- not that I don’t like going out to eat with you, but it doesn’t have to be fancy restaurants all the time.”
Joan looked like she was about to say something then, but her phone buzzed and she rolled her eyes. “Ugh. Probably someone calling me back for a meeting-” She frowned when she saw the message. “Uh. It’s my dog guy.” She blinked, reading the message silently. “Huh. Apparently I did order Prada here.”
Zoey wasn’t surprised by that. Just a little confused. “I thought you’d gotten rid of your dog guy? You know, after Burberry and Gucci showed up? I mean, this will be your fifth dog, Joan. You’re outnumbered five to one in your own house!”
“I cancelled the subscription, I didn’t fire my dog guy,” Joan clarified, before fixing Zoey with a look. “Do the dogs bother you?”
That made the younger woman frown. “Uh, no? I love dogs. It just... It seems like a lot, Joan, particularly given how much you’re working right now.”
Joan sighed then. “I know. I know. No more dogs from now on. I’ll fire my dog guy tomorrow.” Then, she held out a box of expensive-looking chocolate truffles. “Chocolate?”
The fourth time: Cartier
“Ok, so I lied.”
The defeated look on Joan’s face, coupled by the Great Dane puppy she held under one arm made a smile blossom across Zoey’s lips despite what the puppy signalled.
“Joan,” Zoey said then, trying to adopt a serious tone even as she wanted to laugh at the sight of her partner with such an adorable puppy, “I thought we agreed no more dogs right now?”
“We did,” Joan nodded furiously in agreement, “and I absolutely intended to stick to that. But I kind of didn’t... I didn’t fire my dog guy, ok? I lied about letting him go.”
Thankful that the office was pretty much deserted due to the lateness of the hour, Zoey sat back in her chair and folded her arms across her chest. “So you didn’t fire your dog guy like we discussed?”
“No,” Joan admitted, “and I’m really sorry about it. But it turns out he was so pleased that I’d decided to keep him on that, well, he gave me Cartier here.” She indicated the puppy dangling under one arm then.
“Your dog guy gave you a free dog for keeping him on?” Zoey clarified, not entirely sure what to make of it.
“I tried telling him that we’d said no more dogs for the time being, but it would have been rude not to accept the gift.” Joan moved towards Zoey’s desk. “We don’t have to keep him, Zoey. I know we agreed that five dogs is enough. But...Well, Tomford’s been sick, and it feels so quiet in the house while he’s at the vet’s, and-”
“Joan, I love you, but you have four other dogs at home. And besides, we’re picking Tomford up tomorrow, and I’m not sure how he’ll feel about a puppy running around the place.”
“He doesn’t mind Prada or Gucci,” Joan said, although Zoey could tell be her tone that she knew her argument was weak.
“He’s used to them, Joan. He’s lived with them for ages.  I mean, I’m not a dog, maybe Tomford will be fine with another puppy. And I know that you’re stressed out about him not being well. But seriously, you have to tell your dog guy not to get you any more dogs for, like, the next six months.”
Joan’s shoulders slumped at that, but she nodded. “I guess you’re right.” She looked around then, apparently only just noticing how quiet the fourth floor was. Seeing they were virtually alone, she looked back to Zoey with a soft smile on her face. “I love you.”
Zoey smiled back. “I love you too. Why don’t you wait downstairs, I’m nearly done.”
Joan moved towards the elevators then, before pausing and turning around again. “Does this mean I get to keep Cartier?”
The fifth time: Dolce & Gabbana
“Joan? Care to explain?”
Zoey Clarke stared at her partner, waiting calmly for a response. It wasn’t that Joan was twenty minutes late to movie night. It was why she was twenty minutes late to movie night.
“I told you I was getting another dog,” Joan reminded her, a little put-out. “You knew what I was doing.”
“Yes,” Zoey agreed, folding her arms across her chest and surveying the two puppies under Joan’s arms. “But you said one. I’m counting two. Did you buy two dogs without telling me?”
“Don’t be stupid,” Joan said, rolling her eyes. “I only ordered one. But, apparently, they’re inseparable and had to come as a pair. I got the other one free.”
“You got a ‘buy-one-get-one-free’ offer on German Shepherds?”
“Ugh,” Joan huffed. “Yes! Why is that so hard to understand?”
Ignoring her partner’s annoyance, Zoey arched an eyebrow. “What exactly are you going to do with two more dogs?”
At that, the brunette scoffed. “Uh, feed them, train them, look after them?”
“But Joan, you’ve already got four dogs! I know you’re upset about losing Tomford and Hermés so close together, but this is kind of ridiculous.”
Frowning, Joan looked to the two puppies she held. She surveyed them for several long moments before letting out a reluctant sigh. “I’ll call my dog person tomorrow. Tell him I don’t need any more.”
Zoey gave her a small smile. “Good.” She looked to the two puppies. “They’re cute. What are you calling them?”
At that, Joan grinned. “They’re brother and sister,” she informed her partner. “Zoey, meet Dolce and Gabbana.”
The first time: Armani
When the knock on her apartment door came, Zoey rushed to answer it. Joan was already ten minutes late to pick her up for their date, and the last thing she wanted was for them to get accosted by Mo and be even later.
“You’re here- Joan?”
Zoey blinked, as Joan breezed into the apartment in a gorgeous black dress. However, her eyes were instead on the live animal clutched under Joan’s arm.
“Joan,” Zoey repeated, “is that a bear cub?”
“Huh?” Joan asked, before glancing at the brown, furry animal under her arm. “Oh, yeah. I think so. The man claimed it wasn’t, but it sure as hell isn’t a dog.” She plopped the animal onto Zoey’s couch then. “Can I leave him here?”
“W- Wha-” Zoey spluttered, wide-eyed and still staring at the blinking bear cub.
“Just while we’re on the date,” Joan continued then. “I mean, we have reservations at that new Italian place, and you have no idea who I had to kill to get them.” She looked at the bear. “He’ll be fine for a few hours.”
“Joan, we can’t leave him in the apartment!” Zoey argued.
The older woman frowned. “It’s only for two, three hours tops. Besides, he’s tiny. He’s not going to do much damage.” She looked around at the decor. “Although there’s not much to damage...”
“Joan!”
“Oh, Zoey, Armani will be fine! Just put some water down for him.” Then, she headed for Zoey’s kitchen.
“Armani? You named the bear Armani?” Zoey followed her partner, wide-eyed.
“Yes. Why, did you have a better suggestion?” Joan pulled a bowl from a cupboard and filled it with water, before heading back into the sitting room and placing it on the floor.
Zoey hurried after her, baffled at the conversation they had to have. “Joan, you can’t keep him. He’s a wild animal! Or, well, if he’s not wild then he’s been stolen from a zoo! Either way, he can’t live with you.”
“I know,” Joan shrugged. “I would have sorted it, but I was already running late, and the man kept insisting he was a dog even though he wasn’t, so I thought ‘to hell with it!’ and brought him with me.”
Exasperated, Zoey threw her hands up in the air. “So you paid the guy?”
Joan waved off her concern, though. “Eh, wasn’t much. Only $500 or so.”
“You bought a bear, Joan! I’m pretty certain that’s illegal.”
“Then I’ll pay the fine and give Armani to a zoo or something. Zoey, I don’t intend to keep him. I’m not stupid.”
“But you named him Armani!”
“Because it suits him. Now, are we going to continue arguing about Armani, or are we going to dinner?”
Before Zoey could respond to that, Mo breezed into the apartment.
“I thought you two had a hot date? Why are you here, arguing about fashion designers- Oh, hello...” Mo trailed off at the sight of the animal on Zoey’s couch.
“Joan accidentally bought a bear,” Zoey explained with a sigh, folding her arms across her chest.
“I ordered a dog,” Joan clarified.
Mo winced. “Well, that’s not a dog.” He considered the animal for a moment. “Cute, though!”
At that, Joan grinned. “Isn’t he? Zoey doesn’t want to leave him alone in the apartment, though.”
Mo brightened then. “Oh, well I can look after him.”
Zoey arched an eyebrow at her friend. “You want to look after a bear cub for the night?”
“Sounds like fun,” Mo shrugged, seating himself on Zoey’s sofa next to a baffled Armani. “Besides, how many people get to look after a real life bear cub?”
Zoey stared for a moment, trying to process exactly what was going on, before shaking her head in frustration. “Fine,” she said, grabbing Joan’s hand. “But the minute we get back, we’re calling animal control, or the zoo, or something. We’re not keeping a bear.”
She tugged Joan towards the door then, ignoring her partner as she called “Bye, Armani!” to the animal. As she turned to close the door behind her, she just had time to see Mo lean down towards the cub.
“You and I are going to have a lot of fun, Armani!”
Rolling her eyes, Zoey slammed the door shut and tugged Joan down the stairs.
