The second part of our trip has come to an end after a 5 day road trip on the Garden Route. This route took us through rolling hills with vineyards and white sandy beaches along the southcoast and back over the steep mountainous Swartberg Pass and endless desert driving more inland. Total distance was roughly 1700 km.

On the first day, we set off early to see the marching ducks at a vineyard where they use them as a natural pesticide. My hope was high, and expectation set to see a Donald Duck like fanfare marching from the pond into the lush vineyard. Unfortunately, the info provided online was incorrect, and Donald and his troopers had already had their breakfast. Nevertheless, we got a private tour of the estate, which was still very informative and interesting, even for people like us who only use wine for goulash. Next, we stopped by Laura's friend, where we had milktart and tea, in a gated community that did not exist on Google maps. This was a completely different side to living in SA to the townships we had just passed to get there. We continued our journey on to Hermanus, where we did a coastal walk and spent the afternoon watching the abundant amount of whales play and eat in the bay.

The days after, we spent a long time driving with a few highlights. Laura and I went bungeejumping from the 3rd highest bungee in the world at the Bloukrans bridge. This bridge allows for a freefall of roughly 170 meters. I can't deny my knees were weak, arms were heavy, nearly some vomit on my sweater already when seeing Laura and the other "contestant" being strapped up to jump off the bridge, but once it was my turn felt surprisingly calm. I knew I could not withdraw and live with the knowledge that my sister had more courage (or stupidity, depending on who you ask) than me. If you wonder what it feels like, it's exactly what you imagine. Air moving very fast past you, a gentle deceleration, and then a good 2 minutes of blood rushing to your head while you ungraciously hang upside down to be rescued. They must have a laugh up there wondering why stupid tourists pay for such a thing.

Another highlight was buying my souvenir for this trip, which is an Orlando Pirates football jersey. After watching the film Captain Phillips, I got my inspiration on how to name my Fifa and FPL teams. Can't post the name here, or I'll get demonitized, but the true managers out there know what I'm talking about. Besided that, the shirt looks cool, and I am looking forward to wearing it on the pitch!

A bright and sunny day today (finally!) - perfect for bungee jumping and a hike 😁.

We drove to Bloukrans Bridge in the morning so Rob and Laura could jump off the highest bungee jumping site in the world. Although I have to say that Google tells me Macau has the highest jump site now 😜. Anyways, it's 216m up and something I had no desire to experience for myself, but they had a great time so it was a good outing.

We then hiked the Robberg Peninsula in the afternoon - about 9.5km in 3 hours, excluding breaks. It was gorgeous, super scenic with changing scenery from cliffs to beaches to sand to rocks. We saw seals frolicking in the waves, and also had many baboon encounters. It's actually a bit scary because at the parking lot we saw a baboon trying to push the men's bathroom door open, but eventually give up and go into the women's bathroom instead. Rob then goes into the men's and a screech unlike anything I've heard before reaches us as Rob rushes back out - it turns out there was already a baboon in the bathroom 🤣😂.

Heights and Husbands

Harry potter was afraid of heights. He used to love the feeling of being above everything, sitting on top of the Dursleys’ house , the wind in his face, blowing away every worry he had. He loved it even more when he discovered quidditch, the rush of flying was indescribable, it used to thrill him every single time he rose up to the sky. 

But slowly, heights became something like a taboo. The escape from privet drive, Hedwig dying, Moody dying. The astronomy tower, Dumbledore dying. The numerous escapades during the horcrux hunt on brooms (and dragons), more people dying.

He wasn't scared of the heights, he was scared of what the heights brought, death mainly (nightmares too). No one commented on his reluctance to play quidditch after the war, or on the fact that he stopped doing his daily laps around the pitch. When he graduated, there were questions asking if he would pursue a professional quidditch career, he denied all of the offers, choosing to take a few years off with his boyfriend Draco. 

His Husband Draco, he corrected himself with a contempt smirk on his face. Draco was the one beautiful thing he had with life for a long time. After the war, they depended so heavily on each other that it raised many eyebrows, but Harry didn't carry he loved Draco with everything he had.

He turned his head over to face Draco, absorbing the absolute beauty that is his. Today was the second to last day on their honeymoon before they would go back to magical Britain and take up their promised positions as professors at Hogwarts. Today was also the day that Draco had taken up full responsibility for planning, not that he didn't plan the days before as well, but today he insisted on it, refusing to let Harry in on any of the details.

Musing on what his husband could be up to, he absently traced his fingers along the spine of Draco’s, slowly rousing him to begin their day together.

He was excited for today, and Draco took forever to get ready.

It was around two when Draco gave his odd request of blindfolding him, he obliged, of course, the morning was spent perfectly already and he couldn't wait to see what else Draco had planned. He happily allowed Draco to tie the blindfold around his eyes and apparate him away. 

Instantly, something in him shifted, it was as if the location had triggered a warning system inside of him. The wind in his face, the unsteadiness in his footing, he was way above ground and he did not like it one bit. 

He could feel his blindfold being slowly taken off as Draco came to wrap his arms around him, steadying him. His suspicions were proven to be correct as he surveyed his environment around him. 

A thin bridge connected the two mountains, beneath it a beautiful blue lagoon flowed peacefully. He appreciated the view very much so, but as he saw someone plummeting to the water from the bridge, he immediately reached towards his wand to cast an arresto momentum. 

Before the spell could come out of his mouth, he felt his husband's hand on his, as he whispered into his ears, “wait.”

He obliged his husband, hoping that there wouldn’t be any death today, Draco wouldn't let someone die...right?

Focusing on the person instead of the memories that come with the situation, he realized that there was a rope tied around their feet. Was this some weird muggle torture devise invented when he was in the wizarding world?

Why did Draco bring him here? Didn't he know he hated heights? They were on their honeymoon for god’s sake!

And then it all clicked, it was a bungy jump. Something that he had long crossed off his bucket list once fifth year ended, his eyes zeroed in on the sign on his right, the Bloukrans Bridge, Western Cape, South Africa.

Draco loosened his grip on his arms once he realized that the statue was not going to be broken and shifted on his feet nervously. 

“Why...did you bring us here?”

“The war took something away from you and replaced it with fear. Harry you love flying. Don’t give me that look I know you do. And the war took that away from you, Remember how we used to have seeker matches on the pitch and… I’m not going to force you if you don’t want to but I know you miss flying… and I know you can bring yourself to go up...and so this is me offering to do it together...conquering your childhood dreams and your teenage nightmares?”

And he was right, Draco was always right. Harry longed to fly again, he longed to fly again without the screams plaguing him. And maybe this was the way?

“I know it may seem it be sudden, the whole plunging towards the water affair... but I thought we could approach this Gryffindor-style, you know? Going all in without regard for absolutely anything? Your style?”

Harry smirked at the subtle jab at him. 

“There’s even a couple packages if you're up for it?”

Shakily, Harry took Draco’s hand and pulled him to the counter, signing them up for the highest jump of them all.

“That one Harry? Are you sure your frail heart can take that?”

“Gryffindor-style, right? Scared Malfoy-Potter?”

“You wish Potter-Malfoy!”

What Makes Nature Amazing to Me?

Since this week’s blog post is supposed to revolve around the most amazing things we know in nature, I thought I’d share some of my personal favourite components found within nature.

For starters, I love the way nature makes me feel. In my experience, it’s a feeling that just fully captivates you and puts you at ease, taking away any stresses that life may have brought you lately. This is why I believe so many people just go out for a walk or sit by the water or at a park when they need to think or take their minds off of things. Nature has a way of alleviating all the weight on your shoulders, at least for a little while. It brings me the most natural form of joy, simply to be alive and existing in that moment. For that brief time I spend in nature, it’s just me and nature, any other factors or concerns just disappear for a while. I know this all may sound a bit cheesy, but it’s true. Everyone has that one thing that can always calm them down and make them happy, and in my case that something is being out in nature. Below I have included some pictures of some times I experienced these feelings of peace and joy in nature where it was captured on camera!

Secondly, I want to talk about the thrill of being in nature. Being in nature always brings me a sort of feeling of thrill and adrenaline. Of course, not so much so when I am just walking my dog in a park or sitting on the beach, but when I’m out in nature I like to try to push myself to stay active and do something thrilling that gives me that feeling of adrenaline and excitement. This can simply include adventuring and exploring new areas, or it can include rock/cliff jumping into the lake, atving through the woods or tubing through the lake or down a river. Whatever the extremity may be, I simply enjoy seeking out thrills and finding new ways to push myself outside of my comfort zone to really have a good time, of course whilst still being safe though. I have so many things on my bucket list that I’d love to try. A few of these include: skydiving in the Swiss Alps, bungee jumping off the Bloukrans bridge in South Africa, snorkeling at the Great Barrier reef and cage diving with sharks at Isla Guadalupe in Mexico. I hope to be able to experience the thrill of nature in these ways at some point soon in my life. Below I have included some pictures from some of the times I have experienced this thrill and adrenaline feeling when doing some fun activities in nature!

Lastly, I love the beauty that can be seen in nature. However, I know this can be a very broad way to describe nature because there can really be beauty found in everything in nature. For this reason, I chose to focus solely on the beauty of sunsets in nature because they are one of the few things that every time I see, I just can’t help but admire and usually snap a picture of too. Sunsets bring a bit of both thrill and peace and joy to me. This is because, in my opinion,  sunsets are so beautiful and they inspire this feeling of awe and amazement which is both relaxing and exciting at the same time. I love watching the skies light up as the sun goes down when I’m in the car, sitting on the beach or going for a walk. Sunsets really never cease to draw my admiration and bring me excitement. It’s these little moments where I get taken aback and just spend a second to acknowledge how beautiful nature really is and always will be, no matter how busy and/or stressful our lives may get. Below I have included some pictures of some of my favourite sunsets and moments in those sunsets that I’ve captured on camera!

These are just a few of the many things that make nature so amazing to me. It’s hard to try and describe the feeling that something like nature can transcribe, but these are some of the ways that I interpret nature and a few of the many lenses that I can view nature through, which make me love it so much!
