Sometimes I wonder if I just don’t feel emotions very intensely when it comes to reacting to stories, but then I realize if the coming-of-age (??) fine-art-focused manga Blue Period can give me so much secondhand stress as an artist that I actually paused reading about the university arcs (because of the in-universe art assignments), then surely it’s not because I don’t feel intensely, but rather the other stories I’ve been reading/viewing/playing are just either not well-written or just not my type
Not just secondhand stress though. I actually cried after watching (anime) Yuka drawing on the canvas, rejecting the prompt in the first Geidai entrance exam, in a similar way that Yun Jin’s appended line in “The Divine Damsel of Devastation” made me cry

"Isn't it better to just have fun?"
What I love about "Blue Period" is that... Despite being a manga that focuses on art and artists, it never once glorifies or fetishizes the suffering they go through. Yamaguchi-sensei might have not touched upon that topic on itself yet, but I like how Yatora, Maki, Yotasuke, all of them, were just struggling.
There's always a common consensus within creators (me and my friends aren't excluded in this) that we wanted to make something out of our struggles or trauma or else it would mean we went through all of that for nothing. And more often than we'd like to admit, creating from that fuel was comfort zone, and when we don't feel like we're suffering while we create, it meant that we were doing something wrong.
Something 'Blue Period' always emphasize was 'having fun'. And it wasn't always just "don't think and have fun with it", it's an encouragement for us to enjoy creating, with genuine passion, without covering that enjoyment with thousands layer of irony or self-deprecating humour. It helped me embrace my love for art and creating so, so much, and I'm so grateful for that.
Tumblr media
And when I realized that I needn't to struggle to create, to come up with thousands of reasons to excuse what I love... it really feels like this!

Hashida Haruka is an incredible observer. He has a good eye for art, lends an ear to those who need it, and is a walking encyclopedia when it comes to art history. He pays very close attention to things, to people, to the art that surrounds him.
Interestingly enough, though the teaching arc showed us more of Hashida than ever, I was left with more questions than answers. In spite of us seeing him so often in these few chapters, much like Yatora, we realise how elusive he is. He is, if anything, a master at evasion.
Hashida has a mask on, 90% of the time - as nonchalant as he may seem, he is acutely aware of it. One of the few times when he opens up about his insecurities is when he talks to his student - Sae-chan.
"Sae-chan, the truth is I'm bad at painting. I like paintings and I like people who paint. I even paint myself. But the more I learn about other people who do it, I end up thinking of how I can't be like them."
He sees the difference between his art, and the art of others.
Take Yotasuke - someone with incredible skill who seemingly is always steps ahead of everyone else. Someone who is a different league altogether.
And Yatora, who is motivated, passionate and hard working, who made dessins in cram school as if it were nobody's business.
And when he looks into himself... how can he compare? He has incredible knowledge about art, and he enjoys seeing others' art very much. But what about his own? Why does his art have such little worth in his eyes?
That's why, when Sae-chan begins beating up her own work, he reacts so strongly.
Tumblr media
This kid, whose works he has observed and appreciated, is beating herself up, yet continues holding her brush. She is jealous of the other kids' art, and finds herself disliking her own art.
Hashida is surrounded by people who he has deemed to be better than him, in some way or another. He doesn't seem averse to others knowing him, but he brushes off others' attempts to understand him. We've seen him invite others out to eat several times but never seen him being invited out.
He confuses yet intrigues me. He seems so lonely and yet we have hardly seen him alone (with him having three sisters and hanging out with Yatora and Yotasuke). It might be a lot to ask for but I hope Hashida gets a backstory as well. I wonder where his journey with art will take him to.

The Day The Prince Died
Lipsticks are popularly and commonly seen in shades of red, Red symbolises strong emotions, power, self confidence and love.
Tumblr media
When the lipstick incident happened, yuka was pushed away from all of them, their strong emotions were suppressed and love was restricted from them.
Tumblr media
Yuka paints the glass wall around them in shades of what is acceptable and expected from them and gets disconnected from their sense of self as they are confined in conformity
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yuka takes of their school blazer to use it as a hanging noose, it's as if they are taking out the straight/cis jacket of pretense as living in a world where they'll never be able to live as their true self and will always have to suppress to survive is the death of them.
Tumblr media
When toono asks yuka to take off their clothes, it's like yuka is asked to scrape off that paint of pretense and tear open the canvas of confinement.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Toono applies paint on the window where yuka's lips are giving a throwback to the lipstick incident and let yuka's shades of self flow in their veins dyeing their body in the hues of who they are, and take off the 'thick' and 'heavy' layer of false colors, to glisten in their own colors.
Also hiding yuka's lips with paint adds more focus to their eyes and it is aptly said that "eyes are the windows to the soul".
At the end when yuka says (jokes?) that they may have fallen for toono, they're allowing themselves to reclaim their love and strong emotions and speaking out loud about them.

my ACTUAL favorite yatoyota moment is when yatora who is delirious from pain and basically hallucinating is like “woah. yotasuke has the same eyes as mori. his eyes are so beautiful.” all while yotasuke has this ugly grimace on his face

I wonder if Blue Period ever went into the backstory of Kuwana Maki in detail even though apparently Yakum0 is getting his backstory revealed in an upcoming volume…. It’s always “ah Yatora x Y0tasuk3 is so cute together and they help eachother grow” but come to think of it, didn’t Maki give Yatora multiple motivational chats and helped him turn his perspective around on self-care in art school?
A talented artist in the shadow of her even more talented sister huh
