I. Sea of Stars

Part iii of V/V day! 

New mini series (and when I mean mini, it’s very mini) that I’m debating whether to post on AO3 or not. It’s slightly inspired by CosMo’s Star Girl and the Illusory Paradise series.

Summary: The god of a space colony recalls his blurry past.

 “Make a wish to V. He hears all and shall grant your wish.” 

 Such nonsense, thinks the god in his lonely chamber. 

 In this space colony, floating in the middle of a star-studded void, there is little a god can do. Sometimes, it feels as if staring out at the transparent sky and weeping is the extent of this god’s powers. Except instead of tears, the god weeps sparks and shooting stars. 

 This loneliness, is it a punishment? Although he as a god shouldn’t even know the meaning of loneliness, the sensation eats away at him. 

 He is called a god, yet there is so much he can’t do. 

 On occasion, he can make flowers bloom in front of the humans’ small houses. Sometimes, he can even push them through the cracks in the metallic sheets. They are small, sickly things, nothing like the vibrant blooms that had grown back on his home planet. Despite this, the humans love these small wilted gifts. 

 V’s Blessings, they call them.

 In metal cups these colorless flowers are placed. There is no water to sustain them. Within a day, the flowers crumble to dust. 

 After all, no one save for the god has any true memories of flowers on the home planet. 

 If he is feeling particularly generous, the god will bring forth the rains. Like the flowers, the rain on this colony is only a poor imitation of the rain on earth. Even as the god’s memories of the past slowly ebb and fade, he knows that the rain here is pitiful. Instead of coming from the sky, the rain comes from the ground in an interconnected series of tubes. Fueled by a finite, artificial supply, the god must be careful in its dispensation. 

 The earth here is scarce. Not much can grow outside of the laboratories. For the poor children who wish for something sweet, the god can only offer small fruits. There used to be something else that tasted better. The god can’t remember what its name was. But there was someone who was close to the god that had carried it with him every day. 

 It was colorful. And very sweet. So much sweeter than the fruits grown here. 

 The god lets out a sigh. The underground vents in his panels let out steam in response. A surge of electricity courses through his wire veins. 

 The sun sits in the god’s hands, offering up its small rays of warmth. Despite this, the god wishes for a glimpse of the sun beneath a blue sky. Although he had once despised the day, night is all he has now.

 In this unchanging abyss, time stretched on endlessly. It eroded names, faces and the past. He has been here since…since forever, it seems. In the hours where he sleeps, he dreams of a past smeared by the passage of time. The voices are distorted. The faces are nothing more than splashes of paint. There is a voice in his mind that tells him that he was once just like the people on his colony. 

 Full of hopes. Full of dreams. Begging for a god to grant his wish. 

 Now he aimlessly floats in this sea of stars, nursing the small ball of warmth in his metal hands. 

 On this colony of endless sunlight, the only semblance of night he can provide is to turn off his lights. Days here are long. The nights with its silence are even longer. 

 At night, the humans hide from him. Illicit acts are committed. Stolen kisses, ugly wishes and crimes of passion all dance across his panels. The god turns away and closes his eyes. 

 He had committed such crimes on earth. 

 Night’s loneliness is not a punishment for the god. It is his duty to provide his humans respite. 

 With each millionth rotation, he can feel another piece of him slipping away. The pieces closest to the sun are beginning to slightly melt. The furthest edges of his panels are beginning to break away. A darkness eats away at the edges of his mind. Eventually, he would just be all machine and no man. 

 “System rot?” asked a voice from the past. 

 It sounds so familiar. Deep and calculating. The voice felt like it had come from his own chest, but that was impossible. As a god, he has no human parts. His eyes and ears are embedded in the panels. His voice thrums through the colony in the form of creaks and groans of metal. He no longer speaks the language of his humans. 

 “It’s when a ‘god’ completely forgets their humanity. That’s when the colony system is deemed unfit,” explained an unfamiliar voice. 

 “Then what?”

 The response is garbled by radio waves broadcasting the morning call. The god slowly turns on the lights. The humans rise. Some reluctantly. Some excitedly. Some not at all. 

 Today as well they will pray to him. 

 He cannot save them all, but believes that it’s worth a try. 

 Already, the first prayers are beginning.

It lets him/her/them stay in contact with their handlers and allies. It gives him/her/them mission-specific information. Including where weapon caches are. It keeps track of their credentials. Is also a handheld personal force shield generator. It has crime databases, wiretapping, evidence analysis, a lie detector, and monitors its wearer's heartbeat, blood pressure, & blood sugar to ensure that its use was authorized and to send help if the user is healthy or is in trouble. Can project 3d and 4d holograms. It provides internet access and cellular reception with clear reception and unlimited data anywhere on Earth. 

Has clear reception and cellular reception in terraformed and colonized planets, moons, comets, asteroids, & planetoids star systems and galaxies of the multiverse. It uses nanotechnology to physically reconfigure itself to prevent hacking. It also has GPS functionality. Has a hacking tool. Has a compact first aid kit. Is a wearable computer. Has an interface is a holographic 3d wrist-mounted computer complete with a miniature 4d holographic projector. 

The wrist communicator is based on an alien memory metal so when they take it off it can flex into a tablet shape. Can hack computers, machines, phones, tablets, robots, & artificial intelligences. It can dispense first-aid, repair and customize equipment, and send and receive phone calls. It can record audio sound and visual video footage for later playback. Using a simple but elegant form of sonar and satellite tracking this wrist mounted computer can map out areas where its user travels. 

It acts as a database for the wearer’s personal information and inventory. It is capable of tracking the wearer’s status and organizes the user’s inventory of apparel, junk, weapons, misc, armor, mods, aid, items, & equipment. An overlay of the data is also available. In addition, the device features a built-in radio module. It has an advanced compass. 

It has a virtual 3d and 4d map that displays discovered locations. It has a holographic map projector which shows a complete 3D or 4D scan of an area. It has a sonar and motion sensor system that highlights nearby allies, enemies, people, animals, beasts, creatures, and monsters. It is a communicator, a map, a flashlight, a compass, a scanner, a music player, a smart watch, & a portable computer.

It has lighting functionality. A holographic player, video tape, CD player, & DVD player is mounted beneath the display. It is capable of keeping tabs on the user’s health condition, ammo, weapons, armor, apparel, & food and water. It shows the user’s health bar as red, yellow, orange, & green. It has a blue, pink, and purple heath bar system to show laser, plasma, & hard light shields and force fields. It has a silver, gold, & obsidian health bar system to show combat armor, power armor, & mech suit armor condition. 

The wrist computer gauntlet’s uses include but are not limited to data storage, inventory management, topographical mapping, assisted targeting, telephone, medical diagnostics, computer, radio receiver, telegram, hacking, music (CD) player, & Video (Video and DVD) Player . It can map out areas. It can take and store notes and memos. It has a built-in radio. It has a geiger counter and toxic gauge for radiation, toxins, & poisons. It has a built-in flash light used to illuminate dark areas. 

It needs to be worn as a gauntlet which seals with a biometric lock. It utilizes a revamped 3d or 4d holographic display interface with animated images. It automatically updates using satellites. Additionally, it integrates with the onboard computers of power armor and mech suits allowing a user to access their wrist mounted computer from within the armor via a HUD visor display. The inventory menu is a system used for viewing and managing collected items. The menu also displays total currency and carry weight on the screen. 

It is sorted into several tabs. Weapons, Apparel, Aid, Misc, Junk, Mods, Ammo, & Money. All guns, melee weapons, grenades, and mines fall in this tab. Specs of weapons can be viewed and compared as well as equipped and unequipped weapons.  It shows their attachments such as silencers or suppressors, compensators or muzzles, grips, flashlights, scopes, red dot sight, red laser sight, or grenade launcher. Shows the damage effect it has on enemies. It shows the weapon’s stats such as range, damage, etc. It shows the weapons condition and shows if it is in need of maintenance and repair. 

All armor and clothing appear in this tab. Specs of armor and clothing can be viewed and compared as well as equipped and unequipped apparel.  All aid such as medicines, drugs, food, and drinks are sorted here and can be used and consumed in this tab. Miscellaneous items such as keys, cds, dvds, holographic tapes, notes, and items which fall under no other category are in this tab. Mod tab for weapon and armor modifications. Ammo lists all types of ammunition for guns, grenades, & mines currently in inventory. Currency shows all dollars and copper, bronze, brass, silver, gold, & platinum coins, cash, and credits. 

A unique feature of the Mark 20 Wrist Computer is an adapter plug attached to the underside of the device. This plug is used to perform diagnostics on power armor and mech suits. It can hack into computers. It has a lockpick module to pick the locks of doors, safes, etc. In addition, the plug is also used to gain control of robots, androids, artificial intelligences, automatons, mech suits. When wearing a power armor or mech suit the user does not interact with the wrist computer directly. Instead all the information is displayed through the suit’s integrated HUD but with a different HUD color. 

This implies that the Mark 20 is capable of interfacing with power armor or mech suits onboard systems to allow access to its functionality without having to directly operate the device. It is a wrist gauntlet, wrist bracer or wrist computer. It is a piece of wrist-worn technology. It houses several technologically advanced features.  The wrist gauntlet is a small computer device worn on the wrist and features numerous controls for various items of human and alien magic and technology. It has a digitized display. The gauntlet is linked directly into a metahuman and superhuman humanoid’s combat armor, combat helmet, power armor, power armor helmet, & mecha suit and governs many of their functions. 

The gauntlet also acts as a power source for these tools although it has only limited capacity and would become depleted with repeated use. However, despite the clearly advanced nature of the technology involved, the wrist gauntlet can be recharged from any common power source such as gas, steam, water, nuclear power, & electricity.  

The mark 20 is the most customizable model made. It was the epitome of technology. Each instrument is individually crafted and personally attuned to its recipient. The device is so personalized to its user that it could continuously monitor and report the vital signs of its assigned wearer in real time. It was the quintessential personal data assistant complete with a magical AI modeled after a female humanoid alien and female human. Complete with its own mapping system, navigation system, radio receiver, computer, video and music player, cellphone, & personal inventory tracking software. It’s a souped-up PDA complete with DNA biometric lock.

Todolf modern mafia au “Fallen” Poor Roger?

If Roger had to describe Rudolf’s style in a word, it would be expensive. He had wondered before if the young man had ever worn an article of clothing that wasn’t tailored to him. As expensive as his taste seemed to be, it was also simple - black suits, mostly, though Roger had seen a dark blue one appear now and again.

These past few weeks, though, since - Roger swallowed, the guilt rising to the surface. Since he’d sent Rudolf to Tod. Something had changed. Rudolf looked different. Not just tired, resigned. His clothes looked off. Roger hadn’t been quite able to put his finger on what it was - Rudolf was still wearing impeccably tailored suits.

It was as he peered down, catching a glimpse of the pair that Tod and Rudolf made, that he finally figured it out. The shade of black was different. Tod’s suits had always been an all-encompassing black, dark, Roger thought, as the spaces between the stars. As much as he waxed poetical, though, there was some truth to it. Tod’s suits were more black than any others he had ever seen, and it was only accentuated by the man’s pallor. 

And now Rudolf’s suits were the same color as Tod’s. The hint of blue was gone. But Rudolf wasn’t in a suit now. 

It had been a bit of a rude awakening, even if he had been expecting it. Tod had found him before the production, and cornered him in an isolated corner of the lobby. Rudolf had been with him, embarrassed, eyes trained down, half hidden behind Tod. And the guilt had come, thick and fast as Tod had grasped Rudolf’s chin, putting the boy even more on display. For Tod had outfitted him as if he wished him displayed. The black pants - that same shade that Tod preferred - were tight, the cut impeccable. The shirt was black as well, bearing the faint shimmer of silk, flowing like water.

Tod’s words seemed so innocuous - an order for drinks, but the way he handled Rudolf - with a deep familiarity -  made Roger’s stomach churn. Rudolf still hadn’t looked at him once, hadn’t looked anywhere except Tod. And the floor.

By the clock, it took Rudolf ten minutes to return with the drinks. A mere ten minutes that Roger was alone with Tod. Ten minutes of poisoned words, mocking laughter, and cruel promises. The worst of the lot, though, had been the faint little lovebites Tod had revealed. Turnabout was fair play, wasn’t it? he’d asked, and Roger dreaded what he would see on Rudolf in the coming weeks.

Or perhaps that hadn’t been the worst. The worst was how pleased Tod was with all of this. With Rudolf’s downcast eyes. And Roger could only imagine how he looked himself. Tired. Haggard. Guilty. He was guilty.

He’d stayed, though. Despite it all. Rudolf had it so much worse. The least he could do was stay for him. Tod had kept him close for the first act, a possessive arm slung over Rudolf’s shoulder that was visible even from the highest level, where Roger sat. To watch Tod’s hands on Rudolf during the intermission - it was expected, but still altogether unpleasant. Roger hated every second of it, and he was too far away to see the little flinches, how Rudolf must be trembling in fright. 

Tod evidently didn’t think this particular opera to be an interesting one, as he dispensed with all pretense for the second act, pulling Rudolf into his lap, kissing him time after time. Pulling him close to whisper in his ear. And Roger couldn’t look any longer, not even for Rudolf. How could he have let this happen? Rudolf was so young, and he’d sent Rudolf to Tod as what? The powers that be had spoken of knowledge. Of what? Tod’s preferences in the bedroom? Is that what they were likely to trade Rudolf’s life for?

With a grim determination, he looked back. It had been him, ultimately, that had sent Rudolf as a lamb to the waiting panther. The least he could do is watch. The little voice inside him took that moment to speak. If Tod was like this with Rudolf here, what would he be like with Rudolf alone?

His eyes found the pair again. They were both standing, preparing to leave, and Roger quickly made his way onto the balcony, overlooking the VIP entrance. In the silver light of the moon and the golden light of the city, Tod had an odd sort of ethereal look to him. As if he were death incarnate. And Rudolf - Roger ascribed it to the distance. It must, he told himself so sternly, be the distance. Be the attire that was so clearly Tod’s doing. Rudolf looked like a freshly fallen angel, attending his new master.

The little voice spoke again inside Roger. Rudolf held grudges, especially with people he thought were idiots. What sort of grudge would Rudolf hold against him, for this? What sort of grudge would Rudolf hold against them all, for this?

He summons Rudolf to his office on Monday. He has to see what happened. Rudolf doesn’t take the seat he offers, won’t hear his words, instead he merely unbuttons his collar, revealing a necklace of red and purple marks. Roger flinches when he looks up to Rudolf’s eyes, but he doesn’t have time to so much as apologize as Rudolf leaves, his gait a little awkward, rebuttoning his shirt.

The door slams shut behind Rudolf, and Roger weeps.
