Southern cassowary ! What a dinosaur of a bird.
[ID: an illustration of a large dark feathered flightless bird. It is shaped like an emu with huge feet and claws. A long bare blue neck with red wattles, and a bony crest on the top of its head. It is standing facing to the left on a yellow patterned polygon over a blue background. End.]

Entoloma hochstetteri
Also known as the blue pinkgill or sky-blue mushroom.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Entoloma hochstetteri grow in the leaf litter and soil of forests in New Zealand. It is the country’s national fungus as of a 2018 poll. It is featured alongside the kōkako bird on the 50 dollar note. This is due to the myth that the bird gained its blue wattles from rubbing its cheek against the mushroom.
Examples of the bird, banknote and a stamp from a set of 6 different native fungi issued in 2002. The banknote is the only banknote in the world that features a mushroom!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is debated if a similar mushroom found in Australia is also the same species.
The fungus is a member of the Entoloma genus which means its spores are a reddish pink colour.
It is unknown if the mushroom is toxic or not but many other members of the genus are poisonous.

Carve Out Some Time for the Cassowary
Famous for their bright colors and short tempers, cassowaries are a group of flightless birds in the genus Casuarius. There are three species: the Northern Cassowary (C. unappendiculatus) which is found in New Guinea; the Southern Cassowary (C. casuarius), native southern New Guinea and northern Australia; and the Dwarf Cassowary (C. bennetti), endemic to New Guinea and the surrounding islands. All three species prefer tropical forests, though they are known to venture into savannahs, wetlands, and suburban areas in search of food.
Cassowaries are mainly active at dawn and dusk, and spend the time in between in their nests-- large pads of vegetation built on the ground. They opportunistic omnivores; their primary source of food is fruit and fungi, but they will also eat insects, frogs, fish, birds, small mammals, and carrion when available. Much of the fruit they eat is swallowed whole, which makes cassowaries invaluable for spreading seeds throughout their range. Additionally, due to their large size, adult cassowaries have no natural predators, and will aggressively defend their young from predators like snakes, monitor lizards, birds of prey, and wild dogs. When startled this birds can run up to 50 kph (31 mph), or lash out with their powerful legs.
Members of the Casuarius genus are solitary, save for the reproductive season. This season runs from May to September, when fruit is most abundant. Males maintain and defend territories, and call to attract mates. These calls are extremely loud, and at one of the lowest frequencies of any known bird, at about 23 Hertz. When a female approaches, the male crouches and allows the female to inspect him. She may also chase him, typically into water where the two perform a ritualistic fight before she submits. After laying her eggs, the female will move on to another male’s territory.
The eggs are extremely large and bright green, and usually laid in clutches of four. The male alone tends these eggs, incubating them and maintaining the nest for 50-52 days. The chicks that emerge stay with him for an additional 8-9 months until they become independent. Individuals take up to three years to become fully mature, and the average lifespan of wild Casuarius is anywhere from 30 to 50 years.
Southern Cassowaries are the largest of the three species, at up to 1.8 m (5ft 11 in) tall and weighing 58 kg (130 lbs) on average. Females tend to be much larger than males, and the species is considered to be the largest in Asia and the 3rd largest in the world. The Dwarf Cassowary, as the name implies, is significantly smaller at only 1.5m (4ft 11in) tall and 26 kg (57 lbs) at maximum. Northern Cassowaries lie between the two extremes. While all three species have black bodies, the coloration of their heads and necks vary significantly. Both the Northern and Southern Cassowary species have wattles-- pouches of skin that dangle from the neck-- that can be red, gold, purple, or white, which contrasts sharply with their blue necks. The Dwarf Cassowary lacks a wattle, and has a darker blue neck. In addition, it has the smallest head crest, or casque,; the Southern Cassowary’s casque is blade-shaped, and larger than the Dwarf Cassowary’s. The Northern Cassowary’s casque is more flared, and the largest of the three species.
Conservation Status: The Dwarf and Northern Cassowary species are considered Near Threatened and Least Concern respectively by the IUCN, while the Southern Cassowary is classified as endangered. All three are threatened primarily by habitat loss.

Getting my ask in for Clanmew day! I translated some of my OCs from a personal project - they might not be fully accurate, but I tried my best.
Hindstar - Nisushai
For this one, I did a contraction of Niaa and usihu - I chose 'hind' instead of just 'doe' or 'deer' for her name to sound old and grand, which she definitely... tries to be. Her name is specifically meant to be archaic, evoking an old glory.
Deerspring - Augyiao
Pretty direct translation. If -spring wasn't a loanword, I would have it specified as the future tense, "deer about to spring." My cats are in North America, so her name would refer to a whitetail rather than a red deer, but I'm not sure how to translate whitetail calls.
Fawnspots - Mweenwoowoo
Again, pretty direct. She and Deerspring are sisters, and I wanted to give her a relatively plain name for contrast. It makes for a good nickname - I cannot imagine a better one than Weewoo.
Dapplepaw - Paplapwyr
Direct translation. I toyed around with the idea of contracting dapple with fawn to make Mylapwyr, both to tie her more directly into the deer theme of her family and to reference her mother.
Velvetpaw - Gawrekpwyr
Direct translation, don't have much to say on them - although, iirc, I sent an ask forever ago about antler velvet for their name and I think it ended up turning into the guide on deer.
Littlebird - Eebwipwik
"Small quail" - he's the father of Dapple and Velvet, and doesn't have the deer theming. His family has game-bird theming, but 'Littlequail' didn't sound quite right to me so I went with Littlebird instead. I like saying his Clanmew name though.
You're probably correct! Occasionally a Clanmew ask ends up becoming a full fauna guide. Yours probably became the one on deer broadly, the category of "Kleka" including sheep and horses.
So with all the deer totally covered, and your OCs all having great names, here's some fun words for Littlebird and his side of the family.
Wattle = Shubpi
The fleshy facial parts of a male pheasant or the head feather on a male quail.
Interesting etymological origin; the word "Shub" had a use in Old Tribemew AND Parkmew. In Tribemew, it meant Gray as in the normal color of the sky in England; inconspicuous; humble. In Parkmew, it meant uncooked chicken, especially guts and edible bones, rare treats that were not particularly common in the Park and had to be acquired from the wider city.
The siblings Gray Wing and Clear Sky were referring to a wing that blends in with cloud cover, and a blue sky that would put such a bird on full display. Since Gray Wing the Wise was killed before ever meeting a Tribe Cat, xey were associated more strongly with xeir role in death as a great, holy sage of wisdom, conveniently tied to their concept of delicious chicken.
And what's closer to a chicken than a pheasant?
As the two cultures mixed to create what we now know as Clan Culture, the many uses of Shub mingled. Gray Wing the Wise became associated with pheasants, the mid-gray color of thinner clouds with the sun behind them, and revelations of hidden or ancient knowledge. Xeir appearance as a patron reflects that, with prominent wattles over both eyes.
So "wattle" is a contraction of Gray + Perceive. It's also used to quickly describe just about any fancy bit of adornment on the head of a bird.
A fantastical bird = Eer-roo
Before the meeting with the Tribe after the destruction of the White Hart, Clan cats no longer saw eagles, and slowly forgot the truth of chickens as they were confined to farms.
The two things merged into one fantastical animal. A massive predator bearing the most delicious meat you've ever tasted, bearing a huge wattle and thick skin as if its hide was already tanned, big enough to carry off hogs and so heavy that it could only fly by jumping off the highstones.
Could be described as a feathered dragon. Its wisdom is stressed in the tales, unlike many other mythological beasts, even able to trick careless TigerClan warriors.

Showing off some cool butterflies and moth here.
Photo 1: Privet Hawkmoth I encountered chilling on the brick wall on my front porch one afternoon. First one I’ve ever seen and I haven’t seen another one since.
Photo 2: Imperial Blue Butterfly. I encountered a swarm of these while walking one day. The upper surface of the wings is a semi-metallic baby blue color. The butterflies were swarming a wattle tree alongside black ants. Turns out this species used these ants as ‘babysitters/guardians’ for their eggs and caterpillars with the ants protecting the eggs and caterpillars in exchange for a sweet nectar the caterpillars produce. The little ‘tails’ on the end of the wings were being wiggled about and it seems this is a defence thing to fool potential predators into thinking the rear end is the head.
Photos 3 & 4: A female Orchard Swallowtail butterfly I raised from a caterpillar. I released her after ensuring she was good and ready to be on her way after emerging. I managed to catch one of the females emerging from her chrysalis on video so if you’re interested in checking that out I can @ you in a post of it.
Photos 5 & 6: A Female Dainty Swallowtail butterfly I also raised from a caterpillar, again released once she was ready to go.
Photos 7 & 8: A Male Orchard Swallowtail butterfly again raised from a caterpillar and released once he was ready. From the same group as the other caterpillars I collected which was 6 individuals. 1 didn’t make it past a pupa and of the 5 remaining 4 emerged female and this guy was the only male.
Photo 9: A Granny’s Cloak moth I found in my garage. Apparently these moths like to come into sheds and garages during the day to rest.
Photo 10: I believe this is a type of Grass Dart. I like these butterflies because the way they position their wings reminds me of tiny fighter jets.
a nice collection of leps
