May 2023: Memorial Day
Our blueberry bushes have been high on green growth & low on berry production:聽
Mystery cucurbit identified. It is a cucumber plant:聽
Red Russian kale:聽
And turnip greens. They were all harvested, cooked & delicious:聽
I hilled our corn this weekend:聽
This corn was hilled two days ago & it has doubled in size. If you aren鈥檛 hilling your corn, you should be. It loves it:聽
These flags start flying Memorial Day weekend. They will continue to fly through Juneteenth, the Fourth of July & won鈥檛 be taken down until after Labor Day. I was a little disappointed that I didn鈥檛 hear any fireworks this Memorial Day weekend. Memorial Day weekend is normally the beginning of illegally discharged firework season around here:聽

Being a novice gardener whose first priority is creating a welcoming place for wildlife with plenty of native plants and natural food sources has made me even more aware of how many people genuinely despise nature and wild animals especially. Like gardening communities and resources are filled with an absurd amount of disdain for anything other than bees, butterflies, and pretty birds that never ever eat anything from the garden.
Finding other people with similar goals and desires to mine, people who love native flora and fauna and want to welcome animals in rather than keep them out, feels like finding an oasis in the desert. I know things are getting better, I know this attitude is changing, but it feels so slow and difficult.

Trying something new with the blueberry bush. I鈥檝e tried netting in the past but without a frame around the bushes animals are very likely to become entangled and injured, and wasps can still get in to eat berries. So hopefully these organza bags I got on clearance will protect the berries from birds and insects while still allowing them to ripen. They work best on clusters of berries at the ends of branches, so it鈥檚 impossible to cover all the berries, but it should be a significantly better harvest than last year. Whatever is uncovered is free game for the birds and insects- they still get their share!
