How to Afford your Holy Grail

How to Afford your Grail without Breaking the Bank

Do you have a dream to eventually buy your comic book grail but find the prices for a respectable copy just a tad out of touch with your monthly income? I know I do. There are books that I'd love to eventually own but find myself unable to pay the price they demand on the open market. So how do I eventually get the grail book of my dreams and stay within my budget? You can budget your monthly income and save for that faithful big purchase day, find a seller willing to do monthly payments or trade up. I don't think anyone is new to the idea of living on a budge so that you can save a few pennies each month. Whatever that amount might be after bills, food, clothes and housing can be placed away into a bank account and saved month after month and year after year until you eventually have that magical number for the big ticket purchase. The reasons I like this approach is that you can just outright buy your grail book when the day comes with no strings attach. Short, sweet and right to the point. I'm looking for book X at price Y, give me! But the draw backs to this method can be something of a challenge to the family man. Extra cash will undoubtedly be found and spent on much more needed things. A new radiator for the car, new braces for Johnny, tuition for a good school; when these things rear their ugly head this budgeted money you were saving for your grail book will most likely be the first to go. This is why many sellers today offer monthly payments when selling their expensive books. To allow the family man a chance to buy the grail of their dreams now and slowly pays it off in the years to come. It's a decent method but has many short comings. First and foremost, this method means taking on additional debt. The sad reality to any funny book collection is that ultimately it's a hobby. And there are no hobbies worth going into debt, period. Then there's the problem about being able to continue making the monthly payment when times get tough. If a spouse looses a job or an unexpected major expense pops up, you have very little room to spend money on something not immediately important to your daily survival in the community. I strongly don't recommend this method of purchasing. Finally, what few collectors realize is that there is a safe and easy way to leverage buying big ticketed items by trading up. The power to buy a slightly higher copy for just a few dollars more while selling your lesser graded copy on the open market is a rare practiced method in this industry. For example, if your grail book happened to be an Amazing Adventures 11 in NM condition (a $1000+ book), you might start off buying an 8.5 for $75. Then continue to scourer online resources and conventions looking for a better graded book. Once you see an opportunity to buy the next highest grade for an affordable price, in this case a 9.0 for $140, sell your 8.5 to another collector and use that money plus an additional $65 from your own pocket to make the purchase. Rinse and repeat until you are able to comfortably afford the final $1000+ dollar copy without breaking the bank. Now that you know the tricks, go get that grail!
