“Inventions and Dimensions” by #HerbieHancock is his 3rd album and recorded on August 30, 1963, at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring Herbie on piano, #PaulChambers on bass, #WillieBobo on drums and #OsvaldoMartinez on percussions. This is a #BlueNoteRecords 80th Anniversary reissue cut from the original analog master tape mastered by the legendary #KevinGrey and its sound quality is beautiful. The only gripe I have with series is the flimsy cover and paper sleeve it was shipped in. “Workout” by #HankMobley was recorded on March 26, 1961 at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring Mobley on tenor, #GrantGreen on guitar, #WyntonKelly on piano, #PaulChambers on bass and #PhillyJoeJones on drums. This is a Analogue Productions 2-album 45 RPM reissue that sounds amazing. Many considered Hank as the middleweight champion of the tenor because of his sound, as he once stated, “Not a big sound, not a small sound, just a round sound.” Maybe because after all these years it’s hard to classify his sound other than just plain ol’ beautiful. This set is pretty interesting with the 30-year old Grant Green adding a different flavor to this session. With Philly Joe setting the pace on the opening piece “Workout” it seemed that Hank was a little reserved in his opening solo with Green and Kelly following. Then Philly’s solo shows why even at 39 he was still one of the top drummers at that time as Hank’s second solo matches Philly’s intensity. The second cut “Uh Huh” which is my favorite of the session is a Mobley original as his opening solo has its moments without ever destroying his sharp sense of continuity and his ability to maintain a flowing melodic line. Green comes in sounding like the great Charlie Christian followed by Kelly with a strong blues like solo. Of course Paul Chambers is “PC” and his solo like always is steady and strong. The rest of the session is great and this AP reissue doesn’t disappoint in quality and sound along with very quiet vinyl. #BlueNoteRecords is considered the Granddaddy of Jazz record labels, but they all had a bad history of shelving a lot of session dates only to be released long after the artist had passed.
