Without a doubt, HIStory 3 is the best installment of the HIStory franchise to date.

Trapped was like the blueprint for the Mafia x Cop pairing in BLs for me. Like even KP drew inspo from that series and we all know how KP popped off last year. Tang Yi and Shao Fei were searching for the same answers it seemed and it was brilliant the way they came together and beautiful. I hate that Tang Yi went to jail in the end and we have gotten zero sequel with him being released. Chris and Jake have both expressed that they would LOVE to do a sequel and yet NOTHING. He's just doomed to be incarcerated for all eternity.

MODC pissed me off so much lmao. The old bully falls for his victim trope in full affect. I HATED Hao Ting the first time I watched that series. Xi Gu was trying to mind his own business and get perfect grades so he could go to uni on a full ride and then here comes Hao Ting's messy and loud ass with his annoying comrades making his life hell. Then it goes too far and Hao Ting makes Xi Gu cry and he feels like the POS he is and re-evaluates his entire life in that moment. It was a love story I didn't think would I would find so amazing, but Hao Ting really did a 180 and went from bully to full-on simp almost instantly. Even with Xi Gu's hurtful death I loved this series.

What's more, we've seen Wayne and Chunchih in damn near every Taiwanese BL since then and I'm just sitting here IMPATIENTLY waiting for the day we are gifted a new series with them, they've literally been inseparable for years. ALSO CAN I JUST SAY HOW ABSOLUTELY PISSED I WAS THAT WAYNE AND CHUNCHIH WERE AT THE FIILMING FOR LU ZHI GANG'S AND SUN BO XIANG'S WEDDING BUT DIDN'T APPEAR IN THE EP!? Trolling us.

The Good and Bad of HIStory3: Make Our Days Count (MODC)

SPOILER WARNING. TW: Death.

The Good:

A phenomenal display of acting prowess from Wayne Song. Just hands-down the best or second-best non-character-actor acting performance I've seen in a BL to date. I went in very skeptical of Wayne as Hao-ting, given that Hao-ting is meant to be a 17-year-old and Wayne Song looked every bit of 28 with a 401k and investment portfolio, but his performance delivered

The non-romance relationships of our protagonist. One of the best parts about MODC was the way each character played off of each other. Specifically, the interactions between the members of the Xiang family. Hao-ting and his sister, Yong-xing, had some of the most realistic sibling dialogue in a BL. What's more is that their relationship, while maintaining elements of a classic sibling-rivalry, contained a huge amount of trust, respect, and mutual support. Hao-ting's relationship with his mother as well stood out to me as being extremely realistic

The strength side/second couple. I find that in many BLs, the side-couple exists purely to fill time between the main couple's story. But in MODC, as with some of the other HIStory installments, the side-couple seemed almost like a second lead with the care their relationship development was given. It helps that Wilson Liu brought a genuine sensitivity, immaturity, and naïveté to his character, Sun Bo-xiang, that draws you in and convinces you that Sun Bo Xiang is, indeed, a teenager in love with an adult

The direction. While direction in MODC wasn't the greatest of all time or even a unique display of Directorial vision (and it also had its fair share of sope opera-esque moments), it had a practical element to it that really changes the feel of stories. The best way to describe this is that every directorial decision seemed as if it was made to maximize the feeling of being in the room with the actors. Everything from the way scenes were blocked, to the steadiness of the shots, to the angles the scenes were shot at, you get a voyeuristic feeling that, while at times can seem amateurish, ultimately reinforces the lifelike feeling of the story

The Physical Intimacy. One thing I can say about the HIStory series is that the physical intimacy is always very well done (see my comments on HIStory4: Close To You (CTY) here.) The sexual moments, while not always the most realistically portrayed, are always intense, and the actors look very comfortable in these scenes. In MODC particularly, one scene that stood out is Hao-ting and Yu Xi-gu's almost-first time that gets impeded upon by Hao-ting's parents. The passion in the scene was very raw and there was a sense of urgency radiating from Wayne toward Chun Chi that is very easy to buy into. It feels like a first-time with a first-love scenario and the actors don't shy away from those very real feelings of haste

On a similar note, the direct way that sex is handled in MODC differs significantly from the norm in BL. Hao-ting makes it very clear that he wants to have sex with Xi-gu. And, while there are times where he's too insistent, those moments always stopped shy of doing something regretful

The character of Sun Bo-xiang. There is something exhilarating about this character. From the way he is portrayed with all the charisma Wilson could muster, to the very simplistic and black-and-white outlook he has on the world, Sun Bo-xiang embodies youthful spirit without becoming annoying. It's not very often that a character who is not necessarily my favorite character in the show makes up a "good" part of the show for me, but Sun Bo-xiang is so relatable and at the same time well-acted that I can't help but note his characterization and Wilson's portrayal of it

No happy ending for the main couple. This one is controversial but I must say that it takes serious moxie to kill off 1/2 of the main couple.. And to do it in the 17th/20th episode is just shocking. Contrary to popular sentiment, I actually kind of enjoyed that ending (with a few critiques, of course, that I'll address in "The Bad" section). It was a logical ending for Xi-gu's character. He had completed his arc and generally served his purpose. And his death was not in vain as it clearly had a lasting impact on those around him who loved him. There was also some beautiful dialogue about Xi-gu forever being 18 years old that came from this plot line that really showed the screenwriter's chops. Most of all, Xi-gu's death forced character development in characters who needed it more than he would have, and also was just shocking and twisty enough to keep me interested through the last episode (though I was already still interested)

Disapproving parents trope done right. While I obviously did not like that Hao-ting's parents did not approve of his being with a man, I did think the show did a great job at depicting a realistic way that the homophobia manifests and also having a realistic timeframe for his parents to come around. I find in most BLs the homophobic parent is just a plot device to manufacture conflict between the lead couple and is resolved in the same episode (looking at you, My Gear And Your Gown), but in MODC, the parents' homophobia has the consequence of forcing Xi-gu to come to terms with the depth of his feelings for Hao-ting, forces Hao-ting to become more serious about what he wants in life, and lastly, due to Hao-ting's reaction to their disapproval, it forces Hao-tings own parents to cope with the fact that their son is interested in a man

The Bad:

Sun Bo-xiang and Zhi-gang's relationship was pretty inappropriate.. While I can see the chemistry between the actors and could understand it better when Bo-xiang actually becomes an adult, I really wish Zhi-gang would have continued to reject Bo-xiang.

Hao-ting fell for Xi-gu entirely too quickly to the point that it bordered unrealism. He went from being basically straight to obsessed with another man whom he used to bully in like one day. There was very little build up to back the intensity of his feelings

Yu Xi-gu had no business being killed off at the end of episode 17... This, to me, was the biggest misstep of not only Xi-gu's character arc, but also the entire show. Killing him off a full 2 episodes before the finale meant that the rest of Hao-ting's arc was filled basically with him dealing with the grief of losing Xi-gu even a number of years after his death with no real progress in his dealings with it. What I mean is, after Xi-gu's death (that wasn't even explicitly alluded to), we get 1 episode of wondering what happened, and another where Hao-ting is just so depressed about it that his story never moves forward. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad he got to grieve for as long as he needed but I feel like Xi-gu's death kept Hao-ting psychologically trapped in his final moments. It was like Hao-ting died with Xi-gu and it was strange for the story to continue on the way it did. I don't know, I just wish they would've either waited to kill him off or told the story out of chronological order so that viewers aren't left feeling like the last 2 episodes were a shadow of the former glory of the first 17.

OK. BITCH. WHATT!!!!!!!!!!! I literally have to hold back screaming out loud watching this episode (because it was midnight here and everyone was asleep). This is such a good episode. 

Ok, first of all, I love how Hao Ting is thirsty as fck for Xi Gu. It’s very realistic and I literally gasped at every moment the show emphasized it. Yong Ching saying that the door should be kept open at all times, and Hao Ting arguing back and closing the door for like a fraction and saying, “just leave it like this!” I WHEEZED JHSDFBSDBD IT DOESN’T MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE BOO. 

We all just got to love Hao Ting’s friends. They’re very supportive of Hao Ting and they try their best to cheer him up. That has always been the case from the start, but in the recent episodes especially this one, they actually show us that they’re supportive friends rather than cronies. I love how these boys are given as much character and is just a great support system for Hao Ting and his relationship.

The episode also emphasized a lot on how important to Xi Gu that Hao Ting makes it to the Top 5 university as well. Although he says that they’re not together yet, but it seems like he respects Hao Ting’s parents’ wish so much that he won’t allow Hao Ting to slack off so they can actually be together. Fully consented this time. Yu Xi Gu is probably doing this for his parents as well. Getting Hao Ting’s parents’ permission will be like having his own parents’ permission as well.

When Hao Ting went to Xi Gu to celebrate his birthday. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA that was a moment. Xi Gu praying for the well being of his aunt and his friends (yes, they’re actually his friends now I’m crying) is so touching. Xi Gu used to have no one and now he has a very caring boyfriend and supportive friends (ಥ﹏ಥ)

And we got to talk about that handjob scene. IT LOOKS SO FCKING REALISTIC I WAS SO SHOCKED HSFVBJASDA nobody warned me OHMYGOD. The only thing missing in that scene to make it real is if they would really take their actual d*cks out. I was expecting some sort of sex scene (like the one with Zhi Gang and Bo Xiang) but somehow, it felt more intense????? I was like (╯ಠ_ಠ）╯︵ ┳━┳ the whole time, probably because of the panting lmao Hao Ting was so delirious and he just unknowingly corrupted poor innocent Xi Gu. It may be the first time Xi Gu thinks about these kind of things so please Hao Ting, be a little more patient.

AND YES!!!!!!!!! HAO TING PASSED CENTRAL UNI!!! THAT’S OUR BOY!!! I just choked at Zhi Gang reminding them that he’s there because Hao Ting looked one second away from actually eating Xi Gu lmaooo I’m also so fcking delighted that they didn’t drag the studying for university part to the next episode. I’m actually shocked that they solved it in one episode! And we’re back at him being just so so so thirsty for Xi Gu. He’s actually planning their first time AAAAAAAAA my baby doing it right. Take that Bo Xiang! 

Also Hao Ting giving zero fucks to his major as long as he can live with Xi Gu is peak dumbass culture. I’m sorry y’all. It’s not like I’m mad at it. Hao Ting is perfectly understandable. He might not be thinking about college at all before Xi Gu entered his life, but kids, please choose your major wisely. It’s not good to base your college choices on a relationship. Not because I’m assuming teenage relationships are fickle or superficial, but rather, college is something for yourself. What you will study is a prospect for how you want to be in the future. And only you should get to decide on that. Having the, “I don’t care what I study for college, I just need to get it done” thinking is setting yourself to fail. (I’m sorry I’m quite sensitive about this because I based my college choice on what my parents want and wasted 2 years of my life depressed before I actually had the courage to change my program to what I really like)

Other than that, I think this episode was perfect! I was expecting some sort of downtime and more plot development and character interactions in this episode. But I was surprised they actually managed to do that while making every second worth the watch! NOW I CAN’T WAIT FOR THE DOUBLE DATE AAAAAAAAA

Hum... Seriously, am I the only who HATED THE ENDING?!? What happened in the directors minds?? And it's upsetting me even more the people saying : but the title was like a warning or something for what would happen, but seriously... SERIOUSLY? I'm sorry, but I don't think I was wrong to think the ending would be happy and cute, LIKE ALL THE OTHERS HISTORY. Plus, the things that pisses me off the most, was that, it took me so long to actually understand the last episode, I had someone EXPLAINING it to me (thank you again) for me to understand! And even now that I understand, I am still so mad!! I will stop here, because I think I'm gonna explode soon, I just wanna say: the only thing worth it in the last episode was Wayne's acting, it was priceless so at least bravo for that. [History3: MODC] Ep 1-2 Summary - SOMEONE PROTECC XI GU PLS

Alright guys! I managed to make it home in time, and watched both episodes, but I guess I’m able to do a mini summary of sorts - But my verdict on the show is while the first two episodes seem a tad bit slow in terms of plot but there ARE NO GLARING PLOTHOLES THANK GOD and i gotta say I LOVE XI GU AND HAO TING AND BO XIANG AND ZHI GANG AND THE TWINS LMAO THEY ALL SO CUTE and surprisingly I like the main girl as well Si Yu although okay it kinda sucks that she’s going after Xi Gu while still attached to Hao Ting unless she was aiming for threesome but then no communication there and FRANKLY it might even be a love rectangle between Xi Gu - Hao Ting - Nintendo Switch - Si Yu lmao 

We start off with Hao Ting and gang (the fiercer twin, Gao Qun, Bo Xiang and the other guy whose name I still don’t know but he’s a Singaporean actor) in class and the Chinese teacher reading off abysmally low scores ranging like in the 30s and below out of a 100, and guess what our lovely main lead Hao Ting scores THIRTEEN OUT OF A HUNDRED

And okay you gotta give it to Hao Ting - He’s a little shit but he’s a CHARISMATIC little shit with a glib tongue, anyway the teacher yells at him for being not serious about graduating and his friends cheer him on and are just generally obnoxious, and then Hao Ting quips that this is about freedom yeah, and of course the teacher is like fuck you dumbass & threatens Hao Ting that if he dares to leave this class he doesn’t have to come back

Don’t ever dare and threaten your dumbass jocks in class cuz they hear a dare they gonna CARRY OUT THE DARE TEACHERS HAVE YOU NOT LEARNT ANYTHING - so Hao Ting leaps over a desk and runs out much to the cheers of his friends and everyone in class who get up and run to the windows and doors to watch him go - And then one of his friends yell at him to ask him to buy fried chicken early from the canteen I think

And then cut to the next scene - The gang at the courtyard/stage thingy and Gao Qun filmed the whole thing earlier and is showing to everyone while they eat fried chicken, and then Hao Ting demands for 300 NTD each from his friends, who refuse to pay lmao although Hao Ting digs into Bo Xiang’s pocket and digs out some coins and keeps them 

Then Hao Ting’s girlfriend pings him and he runs off

Cut to the infirmary, and HT’s shirt is half off as his girlfriend Si Yu is helping him to ice his shoulder and spray muscle relaxant on his back - She’s chiding him for being so reckless earlier and asking him not to do that again because she’ll be worried, and HT obviously soaks in the attention and TLC from her, and then they proceed to MAKE OUT

Pretty good makeout scene really, although idg why the camera angle had to show like her cleavage specifically like LMAO ARE U ALLOWED TO SHOW THE CLEAVAGE OF A TECHNICALLY UNDER-18 GIRL?!!! No idea, anyway, things get really heated up, but they’re interrupted

And XI GU makes his first appearance here!!! He’s taking a nap in the infirmary and is totally disturbed by these two horny teenagers, in any case SY and HT go out, although SY’s eyes are totally on XG as they leave - She’s curious about him

Then the infirmary doctor comes in, and obviously XG is like the apple of everyone’s eyes and I GET IT BECAUSE WHEN HE SMILES IT’S DEVASTATING - So the doctor is chiding him for not eating lunch (and if you read the character intro translation I did you’ll know it’s because XG is poor and he wants to save money, like that’s driving force behind all his actions for now at least) and because of that XG is obviously thin as fuck and pale like Edward Cullen - So doc tells him to take more care of himself and rest etc. etc.

And then side character 1 and side character 2 - SY’s friends, the girl (SC1) calls herself a fujoshi and is obviously a fan of XG and you’re a bit creepy but I get you girl, and then anw SY is asking SC1 about XG after she sees that XG is first in exams again, and SY gurl don’t two-time please

HT is DYING to buy a Switch, and after dinner with his fam, he tries to secretly ask him mom for money but the mom and sis totally gives him away and the dad threatens to hit him to see if ‘he’ll be more normal’ after that LMAO - and anw dad chases HT to the room but HT wins by shutting the room door and son and dad yell at one another through the door - But despite this u can see that they’re really close

Mom and sis settled on the couch eating fruits in the chaos - a MOOD

Then next day SY catches up to XG as he’s walking to (class? to lunch? idk?) and asks him to tutor her, and XG rejects her of course cuz he likes to study alone and he hates everyone else kinda but she insists and he refuses and then because they’re doing this on the stairs she slips and OF COURSE SMOL XG catches her and upstairs, the fiercer Xia twin videos it and them in that position

Fiercer Xia twin meets the rest of the gang on the rooftop but no one has much of a reaction to his news until he pulls out the video - HAO TING EATING REGARDLESS OF THE NEWS IS LIKE A BIG MOOD REALLY - the nicer Xia twin tries to speak up for XG because they’re like classmates, and then WHOA there’s a strange like almost-kiss moment as Xia En and Xia De like confront each other over that

HT finishes eating and goes confidently, “She won’t like him”

And then he goes to the infirmary wanting to take a nap right, and when he pulls open the curtain THERE XI GU IS ASLEEP AND THIS IS WHERE WE GET THE HAO TING FALLING ON XI GU ON THE BED SCENE FROM THE TRAILERS - And HT groans, “First he ruins my plans and then now he’s taken my bed”

HT reaches for a red pen from the table on the other side of Xi Gu’s bed and of course he falls and lands on the bed, and then XI GU WAKES UP AND HORRORRRRR

Doc comes in and reprimands HT for bullying/disturbing XG basically

And then I can’t remember where the scene is exactly but XG at some point goes to work at Zhi Gang’s soy milk store?!!! I think or cafe that sells soy milk lmao, and Zhi Gang asks if he’s eaten dinner, and XI GU SO CUTELY SMILES OMGGG and lies that he has, but obviously ZG already knows that XG is lying and already bought dinner for him, and also lets XG go home early out of consideration for XG’s studying schedule since he’s also studying to graduate this sem I think?!

Oh okay then before this scene, we have THIRSTY BO XIANG AT HIS COUSIN’S GYM WIPING THE EQUIPMENT AND ALSO TAKING SECRET PHOTOS OF ZHI GANG - His cousin catches him, makes a scene and he’s ZG’s personal trainer I think and when he lifts up ZG’s shirt to ‘check’ on his progress, wow, BX DROOLS OKAY

And then at some point, Si Yu ambushes XG in class and gets him to tutor her after school because he stays behind for two out of five days, and then the twins find out, so when the time comes, the fiercer twin bullies XG out of class, and SY is left disappointed 

HT basically begins to skip school and part time, and helps his mom to give out flyers in his neighbourhood to earn some extra money, and he also somehow cheats his mom by deliberately over-counting his daily part-time rate LMAO, but the sis does the math and outs him, and dad chases after him to try to hit him again but HT ain’t scared at all and they just play cat and mouse

And then the gang corners XG during lunch, bully him and basically makes him late HALF AN HOUR for class which has NEVER HAPPENED TO PERFECT ATTENDANCE AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE XI GU - He’s distressed because he needs a perfect attendance record and grades to get scholarship for university - So he’s fucking distressed, and the nicer twin at the back obviously sees it and he FEELS BAD and XG didn’t eat lunch again so he’s having gastric probably

End of the class XG begs the teacher not to record his tardiness because he really needs the scholarship, but the teacher is like everyone saw you come in so damn late, how can he like not put it on record? But when XG insists - white-lipped and shaking and all - teacher asks him to tell him why - and so XG tells him (which also doesn’t help him in terms of being bullied more by the gang when they find out)

So the gang ends up sweeping the corridor lmao

XG once again goes to work and kind-hearted LOVELY OPPA ZHI GANG gives him a bread again and asks him to go home early to study CRIES WHERE IS MY DADDY LONG LEGS

and BX probably because of his punishment, is unable to go to the gym for a while, but ZG asks the cousin where BX is

End of episode 2 shows BX on his bicycle cursing his cousin out for making him go all the way out to like... find a soy milk store, and GUESS WHAT SOY MILK STORE BELONGS TO HANDSOME ZHI GANG OKAY

Oh yeah and then he sees his lovely oppa in store helping XG to straighten out his collar and then he gets jelly

and the next day he confronts XG and pushes him against the wall and THE EPISODE ENDS HERE LIKE STOP DIS BULLYING

THOUGHTS ON THE SHOW:

This is pretty damn cute so far i have to admit, and I PROMISE YOU ONE OF THESE EPISODES, XI GU IS GONNA FAINT FROM HUNGER OR ILLNESS AND THEN EVERYONE FINDS OUT HOW POOR HE IS AND HAO TING CARRIES HIM TO THE INFIRMARY AND THEN BULLY GANG REGRETS BEING SO MEAN TO HIM

And for now, it seems like Si Yu may actually be supportive when she finds out that HT has taken an interest in XG - More on that in the next trailer I think, because somehow HT will mess up and XG ends up losing his first place on the exams and walks away dejectedly as HT regrets being a fucking idiot

And also at some point Zhi Gang will see Bo Xiang having fun with another girl on the streets and be all pissed and jelly and withdraw, and then HT tells BX to please go apologise and get him back, which BX attempts to do - CRIES HANDSOME OPPA IS DEFINITELY ZHI GANG OKAY
